Making life blooming beautiful
Garden Club brings more than just floral finery to village
AccuVISIO AccuV By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Wandering through downtown Antioch, it’s difficult not to notice the gardens with colorful blooming flowers. These gardens, five in all, have been created and are maintained by the Antioch Garden Club. The garden club became a reality in 1995 after a group of local women, interested in gardening, and encouraged by one of their group, Suzy Hetzel, decided to form a local garden club. According to Joanne Dujenske, one of the founding members, “The group sent out flyers asking for like-minded people in the community to join them in forming the club. Once there were a few more community members interested in joining the club, the club was formed.” Today Dujenske and two other original members are still active in the garden club. The first meeting was held at the Village Hall and from this small group, the Antioch Garden Club was formed.
Club members, who saw their mission as a need to “cultivate a nicer community,” began this journey by reaching out to village government to request ways to help beautify the community. They began a project that now encompasses five gardens that are planted and maintained by the Garden Club members.

Hello gardens The first of these gardens was planted in 1999 and is known as the Berm Garden. On the corner of Orchard and Main streets, this garden contains an array of perennials, roses and grasses. Various perennials have been planted along the fence line extending the length of the garden along Orchard Street. The largest garden is the Mini-Park Garden, which is east of the Toft Avenue parking area and west of Main Street, next to J.J. Blinkers store. Originally, a white moonlight garden, the focus

Shaw appears in court on charges in fatal crash By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
Sheree Ann Shaw, accused of killing a 32-year-old McHenry woman while under the influence of heroin May 6, made her initial appearance in McHenry County Circuit Court July 25. The Twin Lakes, Wis., resident faces charges of aggravated driving under the influence causing death and, if c o n v i c t e d , Sheree Shaw could face between four to 26 years imprisonment, depending on the discretion of the presiding judge. Noting two previous failures to appear in court, McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Combs is seeking an increase of the 45-year-old’s bond, previously reported as $100,000 in now-sealed documents. “She appeared in our jail on (July 23),” Combs said. “We are filing a motion to increase bail.” Shaw, who failed to appear in McHenry County Circuit Court June 7, had been arrested by U.S. Marshals on two occasions, most recently in Las Vegas on June 22, where
she waived an extradition hearing in Clark County Circuit Court. In the May 6 incident, Shaw allegedly drove her Ford Taurus on North Richmond Road in McHenry, striking a Harley Davidson Road Glide motorcycle, occupied by Thornton and her husband. Initially, Shaw faced a charge of driving without a valid license, but when Thornton died May 15 of injuries suffered in the wreck, prosecutors added the felony charge of aggravated driving under the influence causing death on May 20. After McHenry Police failed to locate Shaw in Twin Lakes, they sought help from U.S. Marshals, who took her into custody on May 26 and transported her to the Walworth County Jail in Elkhorn. The following day, Shaw posted a $2,500 cash bond and $10,000 signature bond. Conditions of bond included no consumption of alcohol, no operating a motor vehicle and a requirement to make all court appearances, including a June 24 extradition hearing in Walworth County Circuit Court. However, when Shaw failed to appear June 7 in McHenry County Circuit

plaint, evidence suggests Anderson had been under financial distress, citing several civil judgments the last six years and a bankruptcy filing. “Having read the complaint, the figures are pretty significant,” Mason said. However, Mason questioned Anderson on whether she felt threatened, or given any promises, if she waived her right to have a preliminary within 20 days. “Has anybody promised you on anything, or threatened you, or questioned you in any way for you to give up that right to a preliminary hearing?” Through her attorney, she said, no.

McGinley, again, confronted her following the seven unauthorized transactions in a tape-recorded conversation, where Anderson allegedly admitted making the purchases and forging his name. “She claimed that she had used the wrong card to make the purchases, even though the district card looks nothing like her personal credit cards,” the complaint alleges. “She acknowledged that her behavior constituted stealing and was immediately terminated.” Following her termination, Wheatland conducted several audits, and discovered a total loss of $11,607, the complaint contends. According to the com-

conducted its investigation, Anderson took a position at Wheatland Center School. Through Anderson’s tenure at Wheatland, she allegedly used a district-issued credit card to make personal purchases, and when District Administrator Marty McGinley confronted her, Anderson claimed “that she mixed up the school credit card with her own card.” The complaint states McGinley closely monitored the account, and discovered seven unauthorized transactions were made, totaling $1,043. Of the $1,043, Anderson allegedly spent $600 for vehicle repairs at Meineke Car Care.

With the possibility of restitution, a former bookkeeper accused of embezzling nearly $30,000 from two area school districts had her bond continued in Kenosha County (Wis.) Circuit Court July 15, pushing her preliminary hearing to Aug. 12. Mary Anderson, 55, posted a $20,000 signature bond following her June 28 initial appearance, contingent on the conditions that include no contact with personnel and students from two Wisconsin school districts, according to online circuit court records. With the bond extension, she waived her right to a preliminary hearing within 20 days, of which Anderson understood. “So, you are giving up your right to have this preliminary hearing within 20 days, do you understand that?” questioned Court Commissioner Jon Mason. Anderson, who appeared with Attorney Kevin Noonan, made short statements, stating yes throughout the two-minute proceeding. The former bookkeeper is charged with two felony counts of theft of movable property, greater than $10,000 for allegedly taking money from both schools, starting in 2010, the criminal complaint states. The complaint contends Anderson paid herself $17,000 while serving as a bookkeeper of Salem, Wis., Grade School from 200614, when she voluntarily resigned.
Nine months after Anderson’s departure, Salem Grade School retained forensic accounting firm Balanced Edge to investigate her performance, revealing that she allegedly paid herself $18.02 per hour, instead of $13.42 per hour from 2010-2014. Additionally, Anderson allegedly upgraded her hotel package while attending a conference at the Kalahari Resort in the Wisconsin Dells, where she is accused of making two unauthorized transactions costing the district an extra $80. The forensic audit revealed Salem Grade School suffered a $17,000 loss. While Balanced Edge

Later, as the human resource finance specialist for Wheatland, Wis., Center School, she allegedly stole nearly $12,000, the complaint added. At Salem, problems arose in February 2014 when the school hired Business Manager Susan Jarvis, who noted Anderson refused to do assigned work. “Near the end of her (term) as a bookkeeper for the school district, her supervisors discovered numerous financial irregularities in the payroll records, general ledger reports and disbursements, all of which were maintained by the defendant,” the complaint states.

Health department urges vaccinations for students
In recognition of National Immunizations Month in August, the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center reminds parents of schoolage children to add vaccinations to their back-to-school checklist. “We encourage every parent to not wait until the last minute to get their children caught up on their immunizations,” said Mark Pfister, the Health Department’s interim executive director. For the upcoming 20162017 school year, all students entering grades six, seven and 12 must receive the meningococcal conjugate vaccine. One dose will be administered when the child enters sixth or seventh grade and a second dose will be given when the child enters 12th grade. The meningococcal conjugate vaccine helps prevent four major types of meningococcal disease. Students must either show proof of having received the vaccination or have an approved medical or religious exemption on file. College students also need to be vaccinated against

diseases like whooping cough, the flu and HPV (human papilloma virus). Meningococcal vaccines are highly recommended for students who will be living in dorms. Students may need other vaccines depending on factors such as their childhood vaccination history, travel plans and their personal health status and risks. Parents should consult with the healthcare providers of their children to determine their individual needs. Those who lack a healthcare provider can schedule an appointment at one of the Health Department’s community health centers by calling (847) 377-8800. National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is an annual observance held in August to highlight the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. Sheriff, Florida Georgia Line work to calm backlash Security refusal at Country Thunder draws national scrutiny
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
In at least two decades, no one performing at Country Thunder has ever declined law enforcement support backstage, according to Kenosha County, Wis., Sheriff David Beth. But, that ended July 21 when a member of Florida Georgia Line’s staff requested no deputies backstage during the country music festival in Twin Lakes, Wis., leading to national backlash against the group. Adding to the backlash was the same request a day later in Jones County, Iowa, where the duo of Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard
made a tour stop. Following the second occurrence, social media was abuzz with speculation that Florida Georgia Line is anti-police, in the midst of a national crisis involving officer-involved shootings. “I believe this whole thing started with, and gone nationwide, because of one person’s Facebook, email, or Tweet, or whatever it was and it’s kind of blown up,” Beth said. Beth, who spoke to the media during a news conference at his home July 26, said his department was working to resolve the issue with Florida Georgia Line after the two held a phone
conversation minutes earlier. “I told Brian Kelley that we will work on getting what exactly happened squared away, and we will get those facts out,” Beth stated. Before Florida Georgia Line’s appearance July 22, a member of Beth’s command staff received word from a representative of the group requesting no presence of law enforcement backstage during their performance. The request caught Beth, and other deputies off guard. “My command staff gave me an interesting request the band had made, and they band had requested that no law enforcement be backstage during their
performance,” Beth said. “We have never had that in the two decades or so that Country Thunder has been out in Twin Lakes.” The following day, when Florida Georgia Line appeared in Iowa, the Sheriff’s Department received the same request, further intensifying backlash against the duo. The band responded via Twitter and Facebook, claiming they have admiration for law enforcement, but some fans reportedly were not satisfied. “Hey guys, we’ve just been made aware something happened at a show this weekend involving a police
officer,” the band stated on Facebook July 24. “We want you to know that we have nothing but love and respect for the police. We are bummed anyone ever got a different impression.” A fan reportedly from Iowa responded, calling Florida Georgia Line cowards for declining backstage security, and then asking for a police escort out of the venue. “I spoke personally with a law emforcement (sic) official from Jones County and FGL requested no law enforcement backstage. But they wanted them to escort them off the fairgrounds. That takes guts,” the post
stated. Along with fan backlash, national media outlets, including one from New York, and tabloid television show TMZ, reached out to Beth. Moments before Tuesday’s news conference, Beth learned about Kelley’s family roots in law enforcement and in the political system in his phone conversation. After the discussion, Beth believes it was a misunderstanding, which in turn, got blown out of proportion. “I am hoping it was big misunderstanding and we are going to work on getting it squared away.”

element that has me focused to the point of distraction. The dress. Not hers. Mine. I’ve completed numerous shopping trips – online and to real live stores where I tried various necklines, hemlines and waistlines. I found one I seriously considered getting but then had second thoughts. This has happened three or four times. In the meantime, the bridesmaids have chosen and bought their dresses. They’ll look fabulous. The flower girls have theirs. They’ll be adorable. My husband and sons have all purchased brand new suits. They’ll be the definition of handsome. Even my daughter has said yes to The Dress. It’s gorgeous and she’ll be magnificent. I’m still looking. Don’t get me wrong.
I understand the overall insignificance of my decision. I’m the mother of the bride for goodness sakes. People won’t care about what I wear. All eyes will be on my sweet baby girl. As they should be. Still, I have just one daughter and this is my only shot at filling the role of MOTB. The more I go through life, the more I realize these moments shouldn’t be squandered. It is an important day and I want to feel good in my skin (or lace over satin, as the case may be). So, while this whole dress ordeal isn’t important to anyone else, it is to me. There are numerous beautiful choices. I’ve been contemplating why I’m having such a hard time with the decision. It’s pretty simple, really.
I’m not sure I’m ready to be the mother of the bride. My daughter is ready. Her fiancé is ready. They are a beautiful couple. We love them both. I, however, have always been a little stunted. It seems I’m perpetually playing catch-up when it comes to understanding the logic of this thing called life. Most people are able to look ahead and anticipate milestones. I live in the day (but usually not by choice). I am still shocked that my daughter is a grown up. I thought she’d be a little girl forever. But that is not the case (thank goodness) and now I am soon-to-be the mother of the bride. Except I’m not old enough, not ready enough to be the mother of the bride. At least not in my mind. The numbers would prove
otherwise. (How and when did this happen?) This brings about such tugging feelings. I don’t feel appropriately mature to be right here right now. But I am. That’s life. And I need a dress. I know I will find one. Perhaps I already have. I just need to pull the trigger, or swipe the plastic – if we are being honest. Which I will do. I’ve got to wear something. The alternative wouldn’t be pretty. But we don’t want to go there. I best get shopping. Since our own wedding we’ve been on sabbatical, during which time we experienced all other stages – from the baby shower to the kindergarten and high school graduation stages and everything in between. Mother tries to help daughter move out Dear W.C., I am a senior citizen living with my daughter and her three children. They are all sleeping in my one-bedroom apartment. It is very crowded and disruptive. My health is poor because of heart problems and kidney disease. I live on my Social Security, which isn’t much to get by on. I can’t risk losing my senior housing. I had to take my daughter in to prevent them from becoming homeless, but this is very hard on my health. My daughter helps where she can. She drives me to

my doctor’s appointments and for groceries. Her car is breaking down all the time, and she does not have money for both first month’s rent and a security deposit to move out. It would help me so much if you could help her get on her feet and move out of my apartment. Dear readers,
I went to visit the senior woman at the address listed on her letter. The senior housing apartments are usually fairly quiet when I visit, but this time I could hear the noise coming down the hall to her apartment. I could hear children shouting and running around. I could not fault the children for being children. They just are not supposed to be living in senior housing complexes. I could imagine there had already been complaints filed by other residents. I also could imagine how disruptive living with three children in a one-bedroom apartment was to a senior
citizen who is living with health conditions. I knocked on the door and again heard excited shouting and feet running to the door. The door burst open with three children and a somewhat disheveledlooking senior citizen trailing behind. The woman scolded the children saying, “I told you kids not to answer the door without an adult.” The children all looked chastened and answered, “Sorry, Grandma.” The woman then turned to me saying, “Sorry for the greeting. How can I help you?” As she said this, I saw she recognized who

The Aquanuts, who finished third in Division 1, accumulated 1,728.02 points, 200 more than the Beaverland Must-Skis. Winning the 50th Annual event was Janesville’s Rock Aqua Jays, tabulating 1,918.56 while the Mad-City Ski Team came up less than two points from first. The Rock Aqua Jays won the Mercury Open in Janesville in June, where the Aquanuts also finished third. Teams are judged on several areas,
including dock/equipment personnel, pick-up boats crew, tow boat driving, showmanship, sound crew, overall, high individual club act, jump skiing, doubles and pyramid assembly. The Aquanuts, who finished among the top five in all statistical categories, placed second on the ballet line and pyramid. For the pyramid, the Rock Aqua Jays produced 433 points, 24 points ahead of the Aquanuts. However, the Aquanuts (419) produced 17 more points than the third place Aqua Jays in the ballet, and 38 behind Mad-City. Both the pyramid and ballet were the Aquanuts highest individual club act at the championships.

I was. She then smiled and said, “Come in. Come in.” The senior woman invited me into the small, cramped apartment. I could easily see it would be fine for one woman but the addition of the three children, sleeping bags rolled up against the wall and clothing piled in the only chairs made it very cluttered and claustrophobic. After introducing ourselves, I asked the senior woman where her daughter was. The woman told me her daughter was at work, a job she desperately needed to keep. I asked if we could sit down to talk and she said spread her hands to the chaos all over her furniture. The children were back to playing and entertaining themselves. The senior woman said, “Let’s sit in the kitchen. I have a small table in there.” The senior woman led me around the corner to a small galley kitchen that had a folding tray and two small chairs. The woman said, “When it was just me living here, I hardly ever used this table but now it is the only place I have to sit.” We sat on the uncomfortable metal folding chairs to talk. The senior woman filled in more of the details not listed in her letter. She told me that her daughter was divorced and had become ill over the winter. The daughter had to take a leave of absence from her job and used up all her vacation days, sick days and unemployment. By the time she was able to go back to work, she had lost her apartment and sold all her furniture. The senior woman told me, “She had done everything she could to help herself and the children. I took care of the children at her apartment when she was so sick. Her ex-husband has not paid child support in years and is nowhere to be found. I am the only person that can help her but now my own health is failing.” I asked more of the details of the daughter’s finances and job. The senior woman told me her daughter had given her permission to speak in her behalf due to the long hours she worked. After looking over the financial information and the details from the senior woman, I could see the daughter would be able to pay rent and other expenses going forward. She just was not capable of paying the expensive car repairs and for first month’s rent and security deposit. The senior woman said, “You are our only hope. My neighbors have all complained to me about the noise, and they are going to go to management next. I love my grandchildren, but they are just a handful and don’t understand Grandma doesn’t feel good and either does most my neighbors.” I could see the lines of fatigue and shadows under her eyes. As if on cue, the children all began shouting and bouncing up and down in the living room. The grandmother slowly rose from her chair, and I again heard her scolding the children. They quieted
down again, but I knew it wasn’t fair to them either to spend their days in one room together without any outlet for running and playing. When the grandmother returned, she apologized for the disturbance. I reassured her that I understood the children were probably feeling distressed over losing their home, their rooms, their belongings and moving into their grandmother’s small apartment. The grandmother reached over and grasped my hand with tears in her eyes saying, “Even if you can’t help us, God bless you for understanding.” I squeezed her hand in reply saying, “We will help you. I can see your daughter is trying hard and just needs a hand up. You need to have your own space again so you can take care of yourself too.” In between several more interruptions to correct the children, we were able to put together a plan to help the daughter move out with the children. The daughter already had an apartment picked out that was very reasonable. Hopefully it was still available so we could provide the security deposit and rent. I called the landlord and told them we would be providing the security deposit and first month’s rent. I assured the landlord the woman would be able to pay her rent going forward. We also arranged for some used furniture and household necessities as the daughter had sold or given away everything when she moved into her mother’s small apartment. Once they were ready to move in, the furniture and new beds would be delivered. Once we were finished with these details, I told the senior woman I would come back to meet the daughter and assess the car when she was home. We agreed the sooner, the better. I planned on returning the following evening. The next evening I met the daughter in the parking lot by her car. After the daughter greeted me with a tearful hug filled with appreciation, she showed me the car. The car was in pretty bad shape and had high miles, so I had a feeling our team of mechanics would probably advise it being too expensive to repair. I hoped it would pass safety inspection as we are always short on good, running, donated cars. After speaking to the daughter for a while outside about her ex-husband and her health problems, things we did not want to discuss in front of the children, we talked about the apartment. I told the daughter I had my concerns about her mother’s health and how she needed more rest and less stress. I advised she move into her apartment as soon as possible. The daughter said, “I hope to be moving in this weekend. We only have our personal belongings to move as I gave away or sold everything I own. I cannot tell you how grateful I am for your help with the beds,

furniture and even the sheets, dishes and towels. I did not know how I was going to do all this on my own.” She was crying grateful tears as she said, “Can I give you a hug? I don’t know how else to thank you.” I told her about all of you and how our mission to remove the pains of poverty is all possible because of your generosity. As she hugged me she said, “Well then you share this hug with all those wonderful people.” I promised her I would. It is being shared with all of you every day we help a fellow creation together. The next day, the daughter drove her car to the mechanics for its inspection and we were both amazed it would be fixable. She would definitely need a car before the winter, but it would be able to get her through until then. The repairs would be completed to keep it running reliably. The daughter called right after I spoke to the mechanics. She was again full of gratitude, and she was so excited her car could be fixed. The daughter said, “This car means so much to our independence. It also is so important in my mom’s health care and my own. She was so distressed the last time we broke down on the way to her doctor’s appointment. I barely had enough money on me to call a cab and then she was late for her appointment. I can’t afford to miss any more work either. This car is vital to our wellbeing.” I knew she spoke the truth in this. That is why I added their names to my list of people waiting for good running donated cars. When one became available that I thought would be suitable for her and the children, she would be reassessed for need at the time. For now I knew thanks to all of you these two lovely women and three children would be much better off thanks to The Time Is Now to Help. When I checked in on the senior woman several weeks later, I found a much more relaxed woman. Her apartment was now orderly and quiet. The grandmother told me she still helps with the children but now she waits for her daughter to pick her up and take her to her apartment. That way there is no worry about noise or mess at her apartment. The daughter was continuing to do well at her job and able to pay her rent, utilities, food and gas on her own. I gave the grandmother some gift cards to take the children clothes, shoes, schoolsupply and toy shopping with. The grandmother was so grateful and excited to take them on their shopping trip. She said, “You tell those wonderful people that support The Time Is Now to Help thank you for helping my daughter and grandchildren. They are my only family and are my whole world. You made them so happy and that is all that matters to me. God bless you all.” So I tell all of you, God bless you for your compassion and caring and sharing for God’s creations.

Trisha Helms, 23, and 31-year-old David Loiacano, of Antioch, talk at their Country Thunder campsite July 20.
As much thunder as country But weather was not a deterrent for some
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
There was just as much thunder as country music at Twin Lakes Country Thunder July 21 through 24, spurred by opening night cancellations, but it did not deter some people from pledging to return. Adding to the thunder were several heat warnings and advisories during the week, which spurred cases of dehydration for guests, according to Medix Operations Manager Kevin Myers. “We have a couple instances of severe alcohol intoxication, where we had to transport them to an area hospital,” said Myers, who oversees the tent staffed with multiple trained emergency room technicians. “But, we pretty much have been able to stabilize a majority of issues here.” However, Myers said, opening night on July 21, which yielded evacuation of the main
stage grounds due to severe thunderstorms, lessened the blow that night. The weather, which had wind gusts exceeding 50 mph, forced cancellation of three shows, including headliner Chris Young. “We were actually fairly fortunate Thursday night, when they cancelled the performances because of the weather,” Myers said. “That drenched a lot of the partying, we were actually fairly slow on Thursday.” Chase Bryant, a 23-year-old Texan scheduled to perform, spent several hours working with his crewmembers under the excessive heat. Bryant said while the weather was intense, it did not deter him from enjoying the moment even if he was unable to go on. “It’s been great, been hot, of course,” Bryant said. “I am glad to be here.”
Bryant, scheduled at 6:30 p.m., waited several hours when Country Thunder officials suspended performances during Thursday’s evacuation. While Country Thunder officials hoped Bryant, along with Dallas Smith and headliner Chris Young would take the stage, but by 10:30 p.m., all performances were officially scratched. The cancellation came as a surprise to 23-year-old Trisha Helms, of Chicago, who has attended Country Thunder for four years. But, it did not deter her from enjoying herself with five other members of her campsite. “They never cancelled shows, never done that, even with rain,” Helms said. “But we still had a good time out there on the campsite.” Her fellow camper, David Loiacano, of Antioch, said the weather diminished some of the partying on Thursday.
“Better than most years, I’d say,” said Loiacano, who pointed towards the sky. While Loiacano and Helms were disappointed Young did not take the stage, they will return next year. “It’s a treat time every year, rain or shine. So I will come back every year,” Helms stated. “I would have liked to see (Chris Young) perform,” said Loiacano, who has attended for 13 years. “But it seems like every year, the acts get a little better – very top notch performances.” Country Thunder bounced back Friday, going on as scheduled, with performances from Bryan White, Haley Georgia, The Bellamy Brothers, The Cadillac Three, Parmalee and headliner Florida Georgia Line. On Saturday, headliner Jake Owen faced a delay, but told his fans via Twitter that “he will wait it out.”
