John Trinca, who played a prominent role in returning a lost Purple Heart to the family of a soldier who died at his side in 1945, was honored Monday during a funeral with full military honors. Trinca, of Antioch, was 90 when he died June 12 in hospice at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Kenosha, Wis. A story in the Aug. 6, 2014, Hi-Liter chronicled the 69-year search for the family of Pvt. Thomas Bateman, who died in battle next to Trinca in the Philippines in June 1945. The story told of the reuniting of Bateman’s lost Purple Heart with his family. Trinca was among the speakers at an emotional ceremony on Aug. 3, 2014, returning the Purple Heart to Bateman’s son, Thomas Bateman, Jr., of Memphis. “That remarkable event provided healing and closure to John and had a lasting impact on his remaining years,” Paul Hettich said in an email to the Hi-Liter last

week. “John lived an independent, vital, and full life until his last weeks,” Hettich continued. “Like for many veterans the
tragedy of war and its aftermath was etched permanently in his memory.” The full military funeral was scheduled at St Bede’s Catholic
Church, 26455 N. Wilson Rd., Ingleside, on Monday. A motorcade featuring the Patriot Guard motorcycle support group was expected to then
drive to Mount Caramel Cemetery at 1400 South Wolf Road in Hillside for the burial, followed by a reception at an American Legion Post in the Hillside area.
The death of John Schimdtke left a large hole in the Antioch Emergency Management Team, according to Antioch Emergency Management Director and Safety office Lee Shannon. “We met John during the floods on 2007-2008,” he reminisced. “He and his family were a huge help during that flooding. Their driveway was sand-bag central.” Shannon said many volunteers, including the Antioch High School varsity football team, a crew from the U.S. Navy and many others were there, filling sandbags. “When John saw all this going on,” Shannon continued, “he became very interested in joining the volunteer team and led the way for others in further education.” Schimdtke finished training to become a Community Emergency Response Team coordinator in October 2010, instructing over 50 citizens in CERT procedures. Schimdtke became a member of the elite emergency management team known as the Illinois Emergency Services Management Association, Emergency Management Assistance Team. In addition to serving Antioch residents whenever needed, Schimdtke
