Village Board approves fire district annexation

The Village of Antioch Board of Trustees unanimously approved a joint resolution recognizing and supporting a petition of annexation of the Village of Antioch territory into the First Fire Protection District of Antioch Township at the Sept. 19 regular board meeting.

The village is the final board to approve the resolution, following the actions of the Antioch Township and First Fire Protection District.

The village and fire district have been moving toward such a merger for some time, first with the intergovernmental agreement and then with the appointment of Deputy Chief Jon Cokefair as interim chief since Nixon had resigned.

The Village Board met in

closed session with the fire district board last month to hear the fire district board choice. The boards discussed the annexation during the closed session and the Village Board members had no objection to the move.

“It was really up to the fire district,” Village Trustee Jay Jozwiak said. “The village agrees that the fire district should manage fire and rescue and if the November referendum passes in the village, having the village name the chief could cause complications.”

Officials ready for Obregon trial One motion hangs in balance with trial slated for this week

Aside from one sticking point, Kenosha County Circuit Court officials are ready for the trial of Andrew Obregon, a 33-year-old Bristol resident accused of murder and 27 other felony counts.

With exception of a smile directed at family members when he entered Circuit Court Judge Chad Kerkman’s courtroom Sept. 15, Obregon remained mum, while Kerkman reviewed the status of 200 prospective jurors set to hear the trial beginning Sept. 26.

Obregon faces charges in the September 2015 homicide of 37-year-old Tywon Anderson, who was found on a Town of Paris cornfield. A slew of other charges resulted from Obregon’s 22 days on the run from law enforcement.

Kerkman reported about 140 of 200 jurors returned their questionnaires, opting to dismiss about 40 due to their responses to the seven-page survey.

“Among the 140 replies, any jurors who answered question 40, ‘Yes, I have

heard about the case,” Kerkman stated. “And then on question 44, ‘No, I cannot be impartial, I would like to strike them from the list.”

Kenosha County Deputy District Attorney Michael Graveley opposed Kerkman’s order, stating the questionnaire did not define legal standards associated with the questions, adding written responses differ from reality.

“It is certainly not a legal standard, I would suggest that they should not be removed,” Graveley stated. “I am uncomfortable excluding someone for a written response without legal definition or legal context.”

“It is an artificial document in the sense that it comes without the legal guidance received in the legal process,” Graveley added.

Kerkman rejected the argument, stating prospective jurors were given specific instructions on how to complete the questionnaire.

Authorities identify man killed at Best Bargains New Munster blaze suspicious, authorities said

According to news outlets and the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page Sept. 21, the man killed in a car fire at Best Bargains last week was 64-year-old Paul Hoffman, of Burlington.

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the man’s identity through dental records. Hoffman, 64, was a resident of Water’s Edge Circle in Burlington and an employee at Best Bargains.

The fire, deemed suspicious, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, started before 8 a.m. when the Town of Wheatland Fire Department and deputies were dispatched to the property at 6515 352nd St. “While on the way to the call they were advised that the vehicle was occupied and bystanders were trying to remove the occupant,” a Sheriff’s De-

partment news release stated.

However, by the time authorities arrived, they discovered the red truck ablaze with the victim still inside.

Consequently, the victim was pronounced dead.

“Deputies observed that the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames,” the release said. “The subject in the vehicle is deceased.”

According to Sgt. Eric Klinkhammer, Town of Wheatland fire officials extinguished the vehicle “within minutes of arriving.”

However, authorities are investigating the fire as suspicious, noting Sheriffs Detectives were at the scene collecting evidence on Friday.

“It is suspicious because we don’t know what happened,” Klinkhammer said on Friday, declining to state whether the victim was a man or woman.

“The investigation is continuing,” Klinkhammer said.

ourselves with a completely different fissue, or in layman’s terms, a fish issue.

One of our perennial golden oldies had developed a red spot on his nose. It didn’t look good so I got on the Wiki and searched for answers. Turns out it all comes down to habitat.

Goldfish, which are actually a type of colorful carp, don’t like the small glass containers they so often call home. They do better in a larger environment – a recommended 20 gallons for the first fish, with 10 gallons for each additional set of fins. We have five fish. By my calculations, they need an entire bathtub – a large one.

This seemed counterintuitive to everything I knew about goldfish culture. I had a friend who kept her goldfish in a large goblet. It couldn’t have held more than a couple of quarts of water. Her fish lived to a ripe old age, without any red spots anywhere. Apparently he was an anomaly.

According to Wiki, “Fishbowls are not appropriate housing for goldfish, and are so detrimental to their health and well-being that they are prohibited by animal welfare legislation” (In some locations outside the Unites States).

Legislation or not, compared to a goblet my fish had an expansive pool. Despite that, they had a fissue, which

was my job to fix. I found a vessel about twice as large as their current tank and set it up as their new home.

They seemed to like it. It’s hard to tell with fish. They aren’t big on showing emotions. Sharkbait lingered in the corner (maybe lonely), but after a time joined the rest of the group in swimming the lengths and depths of the new fish pad.

The extra water and space must have helped the red-nose situation. In a few days, the spot on Goldy’s nose (we’ve since renamed him Rudolph) disappeared and he was back to swimming like his old self.

The five of them have been healthy ever since. Sharkbait is growing. I bet by this time next year he will have caught up to Rudolph and the rest of the gang.

Five fish isn’t so many, really. Some people have a lot more. For us, though, five is enough. I don’t want to have to upgrade and enlarge the tank ever again. That’s why (and I’m sure you’ll understand this) next year my son may have to skip the local fair. And I mean it this time.

Looking back at the Mineola

Fox Lake hotel has rich history

Once the Grande Dame of Fox Lake it now sits deserted on those same shores. Built in 1884, it has had a long journey from the largest hotel on the Chain O’ Lakes, to a restaurant and bar and finally as an empty building in disrepair fighting to avoid demolition, a long journey since its glory days.

The Mineola began much as many of the early resorts that appeared on the shores of the Chain O’ Lakes. The land was purchased for the purpose of building a private hunting club by members of the Board of Trade in Chicago and the property would only be used by the wealthy members of the club.

Built entirely of wood, the Mineola at its completion contained 100 rooms and was recognized as the largest wooden building in the State of Illinois. The hotel’s veranda is believed to have been designed by noted architects Alphonse Howe and Charles Caskey. Howe and Caskey’s most famous work was the Grande Hotel on Mackinac Island.

The building is a frame three-story structure, 225 feet in length with a square tower of three stories above the front entrance. Hipped dormers were located on either side of the tower. A verandah graced the front of the building where visitors enjoyed sitting and relaxing while enjoying an afternoon cocktail and the lake view.

Edson C. Howard purchased the building in 1891

and turned it into a hotel. At a beginning price of $2 per day visitors could enjoy boating, hunting, fishing and the beauty of the lake.

The hotel had all the modern amenities of the time including indoor plumbing and both hot and cold running water.

The draw to the lakes area included not only the wonderful scenery and water activities but the easy access to gambling and alcohol even during prohibition. It was often said Al Capone and his gang spent time at the Mineola. Whether he really did use the hotel as a hideout or whether this is local folklore is still in question.

The Mineola was run by the Howard family and continued to prosper, just as the many other resorts in the area grew. In the early 1940s, Mrs.

The Mineola Hotel was the preferred destination for many summertime visitors to Fox Lake. Built in the 1880s, as a private club, the Mineola was luxurious for the time. It not only had indoor plumbing, but both hot and cold running water. It was the largest hotel on the Chain O’ Lakes.

Howard put the resort up for sale. Mrs. Howard placed an ad, a copy of which is found in the Fox Lake Grant Township Museum. It read “For Sale or Rent-On acct of age, wish to sell or rent my 85 room hotel fully equipped & now operating. 13 cottages, 52 Acres of wooded grounds, 1000 ft. of shoreline, all sandy beach.

Suitable for Resort, Club, Sanitarium, School or Convalescence Home. Will sell all or part. 50 Miles NW of Chicago.

Mrs. E. Howard, Fox Lake, IL Phone Fox Lake 127W.” The ad was typed on the back of a souvenir post card of the Mineola. It also stated that there were no mortgages or outstanding bills on the building and that the property could receive liberal terms for the purchaser.

Peter and Emma Jakstas responded to Mrs. Howard’s

desire to sell the Minneola and in 1943 purchased the property and successfully ran the resort through the years.

Living in a wooden building has its difficulties. In 1953 a hotel guest started a fire on the third floor. Fortunately the fire was contained and the entire wood building did not go up in flames.

Recognizing the uniqueness of the building and its importance in the history of the area, the National Register of Historic Places added the Mineola to its registry in 1979.

The Jakstas family continued to run the business over the years but in 1963 closed the hotel portion of the building due to a decrease in summertime visitors to the area.

The building itself after its years of service was also in need of repairs and updating

to appeal to visitors.

Not willing to completely give up on the Mineola, the Jakstas family continued to operate a restaurant and bar in the building until 2012 when the village ordered it closed citing safety concerns. The Landmarks Illinois Commission, in 2013, named the hotel one of the most endangered historic places in Illinois.

Over the last few years there have been various groups involved with the future of the Mineola. Some would like to see it leveled while others fight to “Save the Mineola.” At this time the Mineola continues to stand on the shores of Fox Lake but it is a far cry from its former glory. As it continues to deteriorate, all wonder what its future will be.

Officials ready for Obregon trial One motion hangs in balance with trial slated for this week

Aside from one sticking point, Kenosha County Circuit Court officials are ready for the trial of Andrew Obregon, a 33-year-old Bristol resident accused of murder and 27 other felony counts.

With exception of a smile directed at family members when he entered Circuit Court Judge Chad Kerkman’s courtroom Sept. 15, Obregon remained mum, while Kerkman reviewed the status of 200 prospective jurors set to hear the trial beginning Sept. 26.

Obregon faces charges in the September 2015 homicide of 37-year-old Tywon Anderson, who was found on a Town of Paris cornfield.

A slew of other charges resulted from Obregon’s 22 days on the run from law enforcement.

Kerkman reported about 140 of 200 jurors returned their questionnaires, opting to dismiss about 40 due to their responses to the seven-page survey.

“Among the 140 replies, any jurors who answered question 40, ‘Yes, I have heard about the case,” Kerkman stated. “And then on question 44, ‘No, I cannot be impartial, I would like to strike them from the list.”

Kenosha County Deputy District Attorney Michael Graveley opposed Kerkman’s order, stating the questionnaire did not define legal standards associated with the questions, adding written responses differ from reality.

“It is certainly not a legal standard, I would suggest that they should not be removed,” Graveley stated. “I am uncomfortable excluding someone for a written response without legal definition or legal context.”

“It is an artificial document in the sense that it comes without the legal guidance received in the legal process,” Graveley added.

Kerkman rejected the argument, stating prospective jurors were given specific

instructions on how to complete the questionnaire.

“They were directed to fill out this questionnaire as if they were under oath, I don’t see any point in asking jurors more questions about what they know,” Kerkman said.

Obregon’s public defender, Carl Johnson, agreed with the decision, noting some people strongly responded to both questions.

“The difficult process is that some people make it very clear about what their feelings are about this case,” Johnson said.

Kerkman, who expects about 100 jurors, said “I think we are going to have plenty.”

With 100 jurors housed in the Kenosha County Administrative Building across from the courtroom, Kerkman expects to bring in groups of 12 for questioning and exclusion on the opening day of the trial.

Basic questions include whether they are available for the two-week trial and if

they have heard any pretrial publicity.

In the jury status hearing, Kerkman rejected a defense motion to separate the homicide charges, noted in counts 1-3, from counts 4-32.

“We don’t believe they are related to, or part of the same sort of scheme, or plan,” Johnson stated.

However, prosecutors contend his behaviors after the discovery of Anderson’s remains paint a picture of a man going to great lengths to avoid prosecution.

Obregon – who also faces charges of multiple vehicle thefts, the burglary of two Kenosha County convenience stores, and first-degree attempted intentional

homicide and kidnapping – eluded authorities until his capture in Zion, Ill., Oct. 13.

“All of that shows his consciousness of guilt of the murder that come after,” Assistant District Carli McNeill contends. “It is all shown what he did afterwards to evade capture.”

“The murder is inexplicably intertwined with all the counts that follows it,” McNeill said. “If we were to just look at the murder case alone, we would have to ask what the defendant did afterward.”

Kerkman rejected defense claims that Obregon could have been evading capture from warrants in a neighboring county.

“There is overlapping evidence that what the defendant did after the alleged homicide is relevant,” Kerkman stated.

Kerkman, however, granted a defense motion to allow evidence of Anderson’s prior alleged acts of violence.

Additionally, Kerkman could consider a modifying jury instructions to exclude a line stating “seek the truth” to highlight “seek doubt.”

But, Kerkman would only consider the modification if Johnson submits similar case studies from other states.

He expected to decide on the motion Sept. 23, two days before jurors started filing in.

of Burlington.

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the man’s identity through dental records.

Hoffman, 64, was a resident of Water’s Edge Circle in Burlington and an employee at Best Bargains.

Couple displaced by home fire seeks return to original property Donations still needed

Instead of finding a new home, Donna and Greg Pufahl are waiting for funds to rebuild the one destroyed in an Aug. 24 blaze in Twin Lakes.

The fire ruled undetermined left the elderly couple and one of two surviving cats to stay at a Pleasant Prairie hotel, according to a GoFundMe account established by 69-year-old Donna.

“We had lost everything in a House Fire,” Donna stated. “We are temporarily staying at a local motel until we find a temporary place to stay that will accept cats while the house is being rebuilt.”

As they await the restoration efforts on the 1417 Sunset Road property, the Pufahls are without clothing and other belongings lost in the fire, and started accepting gift cards to area retail outlets and restaurants two weeks

The GoFundMe page has seen less than 100 shares since the account opened on Sept. 13 and brought in a total of seven donations.

“We are trying to raise money to help replace our belongings that we had lost in the house fire,” Donna stated. “We are very thankful and grateful for any help that is given to us.”

Donna, a substitute teacher at area schools, including Westosha Central High School has drawn some support from student groups at the school.

In addition to a collective staff donation of $346, the Global Awareness Club and Habitat for Humanity Club has raised some funds to bring total donations to $421.

Grandmother struggles with raising daughter’s children Dear W.C., I have been taking care of my two grandchildren since my daughter left them in my care three months ago.

One night she dropped the children off when she was going out with friends and never returned. I know she had a problem with drugs and alcohol in the past, and I’m sure she has fallen back into her addictions.

She has called me several times but has not come by or told me where she is.

I told her I need money to care for the children, but she is only thinking of herself right now. I have started proceedings to be their legal guardian to protect them and also so I can try to get child support and assistance. I told my daughter I need to

My daughter thinks I have money and can afford this when I am living on my Social Security. I have fallen behind in our utilities, and I need clothing and school supplies for the children.

Dear readers, Drug abuse in our communities has continued to grow and alcoholism has

always been a problem.

I have seen many cases of grandparents raising their grandchildren because of drug addictions and alcoholism. Our communities are now being affected by drugs we used to consider only a problem in the inner city. These have an even worse affect on the children and seniors in our communities.

I went to visit this grandmother to assess their condition firsthand. She had not given me much detail in her letter on how extensive their poverty might be or even the ages of the children. I knew they had to be in desperate need in some areas if they were only living off the grandmother’s Social Security for several months. I wanted to see how

I arrived at a small home that looked like many other older homes we all drive past each day. You would not think anyone was living in poverty when you drove past. You maybe just noticed the home needed some work and updating. I did not see a car in the driveway, but the grandmother had not mentioned a car in her letter.

When I knocked on the door, it was opened a crack with a chain by a girl who looked to be a teenager. I could see she was concerned and probably thinking this stranger at her door might have something to do with her missing mother. I told her I was there to see the grandmother and asked if she was available to talk.

The young woman closed and bolted the door before hopefully going to find her grandmother. I was glad to see the teenager was concerned about their safety.

I heard the girl shout, “Grandma there’s someone at the door for you!” In a minute, the door was opened by a senior woman who began to apologize for her granddaughter, but I immediately put her at ease complimenting the young woman’s good common sense. Once we were through with introductions and identification, she invited me inside.

The grandmother led me right into the living room of the small home.

She introduced me to the teenage girl and her preteen grandson. They both looked worried about me being there. I told them briefly who I was and how I was there to help. The young woman said, “I was worried our mom had sent you and you were here to take us

away from our grandma.”

I assured them I was not and that in fact I was there to see if I could help them stay with their grandmother.

The boy said, “That would be awesome. I never want to leave here.” The grandmother hugged both the children and then asked them to go to their rooms so we could talk.

Once we were sure the children could not hear our conversation, the senior woman began to tell me about the years of struggle with her daughter. Her face went from happy when she had her grandchildren in the room to stressed and lined with years of worry.

The senior woman said, “When she was pregnant she managed to stay off the drugs and alcohol. But after the birth of my grandson 12 years ago, she started up again. After nearly dying of an overdose, she went into rehab and got herself clean again. I took care of the children during that time and then, when I thought she was straight for good, she got them back. She managed to hide her drugs and drinking from the kids and I for the past year until the last few weeks before she left. The children are smart. They knew what she was doing and so did I. I threatened to take them away again, but she decided it would be easier for her if she just left. That did not make it easy for me as I am now living on Social Security and have no legal custody of the children.”

We talked about her legal proceedings and what she had applied for so far. As they had no idea where the mother was and she most likely was not working, it would be impossible to get child support from her.

The father had never been accountable for the children and no one knew where he was. The children had only the grandmother to count on for their security and safety.

I asked the grandmother how the grandchildren were adjusting and she said they were doing great.

The grandmother added, “Considering the rough childhood they have had except when in my care, they are very well adjusted.

They both excel in school and have plans for college and their futures. They talk openly about the bad choices in life their mother has made. They know that is not the path they want to take.” I was very happy to hear this.

I asked the grandmother for her bills, checkbook and statements. She showed me all these and I could see she was behind in her utilities.

The grandmother told me she owned the house and had lived there with her husband until he passed away 10 years ago. She had her taxes and insurance she needed to keep up with.

With the children in her care, she said her Social Security barely covered these expenses along with food. The grandmother said, “I use every penny to keep these kids fed and make sure I keep up with the home expenses. I just cannot cover my utilities, prescriptions, and the children need clothes and supplies for school.” I looked over the utility bills and could see they were on the verge of disconnection.

I told the grandmother we would be able to bring their utilities up to date and help them with food, toiletries, clothing and

school supplies. The grandmother had tears fill her eyes as I laid out a plan to help her and the grandchildren. The senior woman reached over and grasped my hand. I could see she had been trying to remain strong for the grandchildren and not wanting them to see the distress she was having. I continued to hold her hand as she cried and poured out all her worries over both her daughter and her ability to care for these children financially. I wrote down several people to contact that I knew could help her in her attempts to get the proper assistance. The senior woman was very grateful and began to wipe away her tears.

After a few minutes she said, “I don’t know what came over me. I am always so strong. I have had a lot of hard times in my life but I always keep my faith. I prayed on what I should do and the next day I was led to The Time Is Now to Help. God knew right where to direct me.” We both smiled and hugged.

After finishing my evaluation, the children came back out and we spoke for a while. I talked to them about their plans for school and I found them to be just as ambitious and well adjusted as the grandmother had told me. They both hugged their grandmother and asked if she was feeling better. The grandmother asked, “What do you mean? I haven’t been sick.” The older girl answered, “Yes you have. I could see you were trying to hide your worry from us. I have spent years living with someone that hides things from me so I know when you are not really happy grandma.

From now on you share with us what is going on and we can help.” The grandmother began to cry again and said, “I promise. And you two are going to be just fine thanks to The Time is Now to Help.”

A few months later, I contacted the grandmother.

Her advocates had helped her find the mother and secure custody and child support payments through the court system. Their budget we had prepared together was doing well and she profusely thanked The Time is Now to Help for our assistance. Thank you to all of you who took away the stress of poverty from this grandmother and grandchildren.

My dear friends, together we continue to remove the pain and suffering of poverty for our good fellow creations who need and deserve our help. I cannot do this alone. It takes all of us together. Every penny you give is used to help the poverty stricken.

nlike Forrest Gump, who one day just “felt like running,” distance runners must carefully plan their treks and have a full entourage of support.

Serving on that entourage for friends gave Delavan native Sara Foster the itch to try distance running herself. Distance in Foster’s circle of friends doesn’t mean 5Ks or even marathons – it means 50Ks and 50- and 100-mile runs.

Also, unlike Gump, when they feel like sleeping, they don’t sleep – they keep running.

She began working on the crews of friends who were running long distances. Much like the pit crews for car races, distances runners have crews that man aid stations where they stop for food and water and to refill hydration bladders that they carry with them, Foster said.

“The goal is to just cruise through these aid stations and not spend a lot of time there,” she said.

Crew members mix electrolyte drinks for runners and serve as pacers to run with racers through the night when their resolve is heavily tested.

“You get kind of delirious,” Foster said.

Long distances

Foster traveled back to her home state for her first 50-mile run in After graduating from Delavanthe Kettle Moraine State Forest in Darien High School in 1993, Foster, October. The Leadville race – done all on trails at climbing elevations – was a mixture of running, hiking and walking, Foster said. The race began at more than 10,000 feet elevation, climbed to more than 11,000 feet and then reached more than 12,000 feet at the halfway point. Runners then turned around for the second half, running back to the starting point, she said.

The race began at 4 a.m. on a Saturday and Foster ran until 10 a.m. Sunday, finishing the race in just more than 30 hours.

runner completed the 100mile course in 16 hours, and the fastest woman ran it in 19 hours.

For 100-mile races, competitors receive a medal for finishing in less than 31 hours and a belt buckle for completing the race in less than 30 hours. Foster finished the race in 30 hours and 47 seconds. She was awarded the belt buckle because her time was less than a minute past 30 hours.

Future runs

Foster ran track and cross country at DelavanDarien High School, and at Stanford and had been training for the 100-mile race since January.

“I was always a runner my whole life,” she said.

But, she said, continuing to eat to keep her strength up during the run was difficult.

She said for the last 30 miles, she was nauseous and

“You get really hungry, but you’re still too sick to eat,” she said.

The middle school science teacher is recovering from her run in Denver. She’ll take a month off of running, taking brisk walks instead, and plans to do more 50-mile runs.

“I’m not sure if I’ll do another 100,” she said.
