The padlocked Antioch ice rink sits abandoned and under a blanket of snow in the Toft Avenue parking lot between Orchard and Lake streets on Friday. Mild temperatures during the early winter have prevented any ice from forming despite the blizzard conditions that hit the Midwest just over a week ago. The rink requires two consecutive weeks of sub-freezing temperatures for the ice to properly freeze, according to the village’s Parks and Recreation Department. For updates on the rink’s status, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (847) 395-2160.

Survivor’s story Girl who lost friend in New Year’s Eve crash moves beyond injuries By Jennifer Eisenbart STAFF WRITER
For 13-year-old Kayla Brown, New Year’s Eve isn’t a high-profile day – she normally just hangs out with friends. She remembers nothing from the day in 2014 – only from the day before, spending time at her friend Samantha Russell’s home after they went shopping at their favorite store. “She was going through her Christmas gifts,” Brown said. The next day irrevocably changed the lives of two area families. With Russell driving, the girls were on their way to Lake Geneva, Wis., when Russell’s pickup truck was hit by a minivan. Both girls were thrown from the truck. Russell, 16, was severely injured and died at the scene of the crash on Highway 50 at 392 Avenue in the Town of Wheatland, Wis. Brown spent 10 days in a medi-
cally induced coma. Everyone around her was unsure of the outcome. Now, a year later, Brown is, by all accounts, a relatively happy seventh-grader at Wheatland School. She is on the honor roll, plays sports year-round, and is a member of the cheerleading squad. She is into selfies, as evidenced by her “This is my selfie shirt” – spelled backwards, of course, so it reads properly in photos shot into a mirror – and uses her cell phone liberally. In less than a month, one of the most visible signs of the crash – the almost-complete amputation of her left ear – will be surgically repaired. Not that Brown is overly concerned. “I don’t care,” Brown said. “I can hear perfectly fine out of it.”

HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, JAN. 6, 2016 • 3 (Continued from front page)
Looking back As the first anniversary of the deadly crash approaches, Brown’s mother, Heidi, said she knows how lucky her daughter is. “She’s the one-percent survivor,” Heidi Brown said. “She came out of this the same person. Everyone is just completely amazed at how well she’s doing, in every aspect.” At about 1:15 p.m. on New Year’s Eve last year, that was far from the case. Heidi said she was just getting off work that afternoon when Russell texted her, saying she and Kayla would meet her at “Wally World” – common slang for Walmart. “I said, ‘Perfect, I’ll meet you there,’” Heidi recalled. Russell, who was a student at Burlington High School, had plans for the evening to attend a skating party at a local rink. Kayla was going to hang out with Russell’s sisters – all of whom were and remain close. “It was skating,” Kayla said. “I really didn’t want to (go).” When Heidi Brown got to Walmart, she tried texting the two girls and didn’t get an answer. Five minutes later, Samantha’s mother, Heather Russell – also a close friend – called. “She said, ‘The girls have been in an accident. I don’t know how bad.’” Heidi recalled. It turned out to be horrific. Neither Samantha nor Kayla was wearing a seatbelt – despite regular reminders from both their mothers – and were apparently thrown out the passenger side window. “I drove right to the scene,” Heidi said. A member of the Wheatland Fire Department – Heidi was escorted to someone’s truck in an attempt to keep her warm on the glacially cold day. “I just sat in the truck waiting. I hadn’t seen her. I didn’t ask any questions,” Heidi said. “We knew both girls were ejected. We knew Sam was pinned under the truck. “No one was telling us much more than we needed to know,” she added. Heidi didn’t go see her daughter in the ambulance. Heather Russell, meanwhile, went into the ambulance that held her daughter while they waited for Flight for Life to arrive. Moments later, Heather emerged. “I just remember her running and screaming that (Sam) wasn’t going to make it,” Heidi said. “I remember sitting in the truck and thinking this wasn’t real.”
partment listed her condition as “very critical.” Kayla was in the Intensive Care Unit, a monitor inserted in her brain to check pressure. Her breathing was controlled by a respirator. Her face was a combination of road rash and stitches – and a skull fracture loomed above all other concerns. However, Heidi doesn’t remember a point where anyone told her Kayla would die. “Or I just didn’t hear or understand,” Heidi said. “From what anybody told me, she was never not stable.” Miraculously, the skull fracture was Kayla’s only broken bone. Everything else, as terrible as it appeared, was essentially superficial. That was bad enough, though, for Heidi and her ex-husband – both of whom spent so much time at Kayla’s bedside that staff finally sent them home for 24 hours. “They said, ‘It’s OK. Just get out of the hospital,’” Heidi recalled. The couple returned refreshed, after they ate at a local restaurant they came to frequent over Kayla’s 29-day hospital stay. After 10 days, doctors brought Kayla out of the coma. She almost immediately wanted to know where Samantha was and if she could see her and visit her. “We told her Sam’s injuries were really bad and, unfortunately, she didn’t make it,” Heidi recalled. Kayla then surprised her mother. “She wanted to know how Heather was,” Heidi said. “I told her as soon as she was ready, Heather would come up and see her.” While she had to use a walker for a few days, physical rehabilitation went well. Heidi said doctors told her Kayla had somehow avoided brain damage. “(She has) no deficits,” Heidi said.
Close friends Samantha and Kayla – despite their age difference – were by all accounts as close as sisters. “She told me pretty much anything she wouldn’t tell anyone else,” Kayla said. “She trusted me with all of her secrets. “She said I was like a 16-year-old in a 12-year-old’s body,” Kayla added. “She said she liked me because I wasn’t annoying. I was mature.” Heidi said, “Sam was like the big sister. If I could’ve picked anyone to be Kayla’s big sister, I would’ve picked Sam.” ‘Very critical’ The families were so close that Kayla Flight for Life helicopter was called for would often go on road trips with the RusSamantha, but instead it was Kayla that was sell family. Right before the holidays last transported directly to Children’s Hospital. year Kayla went with the Russell family to The Kenosha County Sheriff’s De- Indiana to pick up a female Blue Heeler so it

could be bred with their male dog. In the aftermath of the crash, not much has changed. “I’m at their house all summer, every summer,” Kayla explained. She was out there this year, helping with the Russell’s pigs, piglets, two pens of chickens – and geese. “And those (animals) are annoying,” Kayla said. “The minute you walk past them, they honk and honk.” This summer, she went camping with the Russell family, and continues to hang out with Samantha’s sisters.
And the female Blue Heeler that the Russells brought home before Christmas last year just had its first litter of 10 puppies Dec. 18. “They’re so cute.” said Kayla. The one worry Heidi had in all of this – outside of Kayla’s recovery – was losing the friendship she had with Heather Russell. It appears those fears were unfounded. “She calls Heather her other mother,” Heidi said of Kayla. “She’ll be as close to us now, as they were back then. “And I think it’ll be that way forever.”

Students get peek into criminal justice system The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office hosted its annual Knowledge is Power Workshop in partnership with the Exchange Club of North Chicago, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the 19th Judicial Circuit and Neal Math and Science Academy in North Chicago. The program was hosted on Dec. 29, at the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. The program is intended to acquaint students with careers in the criminal justice system. The goal of the program, according to organizers, is to motivate students to pursue higher education, give back to their community through public service and to consider the criminal justice profession as a potential career goal. An additional goal, organizers said, is for students to establish a positive relationship with law enforcement and court staff, and to be motivated to stay away from a life of criminality and drugs. The annual workshops also help to educate middle school and high school students as to the phases of the criminal justice system and help them understand what is being done to protect the rights of victims and the due process rights of defendants. This year, the Judge Jorge Ortiz participated in the workshop. He spoke to the students of the phases in his career and
how ultimately he was selected to become the first Latino Chief Judge in Lake County as of January 2016. Ortiz even allowed students to experience sitting at the judge’s bench. Students also toured Lake County State’s Attorney’s office, and heard State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim speak about his efforts and involvement within Lake County and the functions of the office. “The Knowledge is Power program is one of my favorite new programs because it has the potential to motivate young people to pursue a career in criminal justice. When I meet with these kids, I know I am speaking to a future state’s attorney, public defender, probation officer, police officer, or judge,” said Nerheim. “When they first come in, they don’t always have the best perception of the criminal justice system,” he continued. “It is important for them to see who we really are and what we really do. This program provides these students with a sense of empowerment as well as a vision of what they are capable of accomplishing.” The students also toured the Lake County Jail with Sam Cunningham from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Lake County Jail. They learned the processes and protocols of the jail and observed the layout of the jail.

BBB offers advice to avoid scams in 2016 Everyone wants the new year to be better than the last one. Instead of just hoping this will happen, the BBB has several specific ways to protect against the growing number of cheats and scammers. “While these are worthwhile ideas to remember anytime,” said Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois, “the start of a new year is an especially good time to use these as resolutions and practice them throughout the year. They will help ensure you are protected against scammers.” • Check it out first. Before making any major, or even minor, purchase check out reviews at www.bbb.org/Chicago. It’s a free service. You can view our Business Reviews with the business ratings. And you can read Customer Reviews from other people like you. There are far too many times when people say: “I should have checked with the BBB first.” • If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Don’t get suckered into a scam that aims to steal money or personal identity, while promising to give money. Free anything typically comes with some catches or obligations. This caution goes for foreign lotteries, mystery shopper offers and credit repair scams. How do these cheat you? All foreign lotteries are illegal, of course they don’t tell you that. You may think you are getting paid for your work as a mystery shopper, but the check they send to reimburse you may be fraudulent. And no matter what the credit repair services may say or may charge you, they cannot erase correct information. • Don’t pay it all up front. A small down payment is a reasonable request for a home services contractor who may be doing a contracting job for you. But never pay the entire amount upfront. Not only do you lose control of your money, but you have no leverage with the contractor, and no guarantee the job will get done in a timely manner, if at all. • Shred it. If you don’t need old personal papers or financial records, shred them. They may still contain enough personal information for identity thieves to use to get an account in your name and quickly use it before they are stopped. Automatically

shredding old information is a lot easier than the time and trouble it takes to fix a stolen identity. • Find out what others think of you. Get a free copy of your credit report yearly at www.annualcreditreport.com. Some services may say they provide your credit report for free, but you could end up paying for it or getting spammed with unwanted email offers. • Read the contract. This includes the fine print, and if you don’t understand something keep asking questions until you are clear about the matter. A salesperson may promise something, but if the contract doesn’t include it, you have no recourse. • If they call or email you, don’t give them personal info. A favorite trick of scammers is to call or email about a supposed problem with your credit or bank account. They then ask for complete identity information. Remember if they are legitimate, they already have your information and won’t need all of it. Only scammers need complete info. If you give them your complete information, they can use it. Banks and credit agencies ask only for a select few numbers for verification, not entire account numbers. • Government does not use emails to contact you. No matter how official it may look, government agencies like the IRS (tax time is coming) do not use emails to request initial information. Nor do they ever demand payment within 30 minutes, as some scammers represent. If you have any questions about correspondence you receive, either call the appropriate agency directly or the BBB before sending information. • Make sure the charity is real before giving money. No one wants his or her money to be wasted when giving to a charitable cause. It’s even worse when the charity is a fake altogether. Go to www.bbb. org/Chicago or www.give.org to check out that a charity is a worthwhile cause. • Warn others if you get ripped off. Everyone tries to be careful, but sometimes a scam can slip through the defenses. If it happens to you, let others know. BBB ScamTracker reporting can be accessed at www.bbb.org/chicago.
Wendy Wasserstein’s first play, “Uncommon Women and Others,” will open at PM&L Theatre, Antioch, on Jan. 29 and will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for three weeks. “Uncommon Women and Others” is a dramatic comedy telling the story of alumnae from Mount Holyoke College meeting for lunch in 1978 to talk about their experiences, some raunchy, others sobering. Other memorable works by noted 20th century playwright Wendy Wasserstein include “The Heidi Chronicles” and “The Sisters Rosensweig.” Because of adult content and language, the show is recommended for audiences ages 16 and older. “Uncommon Women and Others” will run Fridays, Jan. 29, Feb. 5 and 12, at

(Continued from front page) and building supply stores. Radon, an odorless and colorless gas naturally found in rock and soil, seeps into homes from the soil through cracks in the basement floor and foundation, crawl spaces, poorly sealed sump pumps, floor drains, porous cinder block walls and other foundation floor and wall penetrations, according to health department officials. Although radon gas is measurable everywhere, the highest readings are normally found in the basement and first floor levels of homes and apartments. “If radon is found in your home, it is important to contact a radon professional to assess and prevent the radon gas from entering your home,” said Beltran. Spring Grove to collect Christmas trees at curbside
Spring Grove residents my place Christmas trees at the curbside on their regular garbage pickup day for collection by the village’s contractor. The service is available through Jan. 13. Alternatively, residents may consider recycling trees by bringing it to Glacial Park in Ringwood. All decorations must be removed because the trees are processed into mulch. Officials also said the branches of the trees can by used as winter mulch by clipping them off and laying them over plants.

Above: In 1896, downtown Richmond was a vibrant community where business prospered. Today the main street through town, Highway 12, remains busy as visitors from Illinois make their way to Lake Geneva, Wis. Right: William A. McConnell, was born in Pennsylvania in 1810. In 1837 he arrived in the area that was to become Richmond and is recognized as the first settler to the region. McConnell became known for serving the community and carved a public service record unmatched in the county at the time.
• Yesteryear of snow and completed the journey in a wagon after the snow melted. When they arrived on March 6, 1838, they found that others had settled in the area. These included Charles Noyce who is credited with building the first house within the boundaries of the village, John Purdy, who built the first sawmill in 1839, and Charles Cotting and Alexander Gardner. Cotting along with Theodore Purdy platted the village in 1844. Naming a new community is often a difficult decision with everyone wanting to name the town after places they remembered from their youth – and Richmond was no different. The honor of naming the village was given to the person who won a local competition. A new mill was being erected in 1844 and the privilege of naming the village was given to the man who climbed the highest in the mill raising. That man was Isaac Reed. He named the town Richmond after a town in Vermont where he spent his childhood. Prosperity arrives By the mid 1840s business prospered in Richmond. Two mills – a sawmill and a flourmill – a wagon builder, a blacksmith, a doctor and a lawyer all opened shop in Richmond. The village’s first hotel opened providing
(Continued from front page) a place for travelers to spend the night. William McConnell opened the first cheese factory just west of Richmond. As Richmond continued to grow, the name William McConnell became more prominent in village affairs. A post office was commissioned, originally known as the Montelona Station, and McConnell was appointed by President Martin Van Buren as the first postmaster, a position he held until 1847. Benjamin C. Adams was appointed to replace McConnell and the post office name was changed to Richmond to reflect the new village name. The first school in the area was built on McConnell’s property in 1841. Since the area was not known as Richmond at that time, the school was known as the Montelona School. McConnell continued to serve his community. He served two terms as a McHenry County Commissioner, was an associate judge for 16 years, served in the state legislature and was a county supervisor. The year 1855 was important for Richmond as the railroad was extended from McHenry through Ringwood and Richmond and on to Lake Geneva, Wis. McConnell was named director of the railroad. The railroad service was discontinued in the late 1900s, and now the
right of way is a recreation trail under the direction of the McHenry County Conservation Department. Over the years, McConnell continued to increase his land holdings to 1400 acres and is said to have given each of his three sons a farm to ensure their futures. McConnell was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 53 years and a member of the first temperance group in McHenry County. From the 1840s to 1960s growth continued in Richmond. Farmhouses and town homes were primarily built in the Greek revival style. The fancier, more prominent homes were often built in the Italianate style. Incorporation at last Richmond was incorporated on Sept. 2, 1872 with Dr. Fillmore Bennett being elected the first village president. Bennett was well known for composing religious hymns, most well known was “In the Sweet Bye and Bye.” Bennett went on to become principal of Richmond’s first graded school in 1861, which replaced the schoolhouse built on McConnell’s property. Pickle factories, cheese and creamery factories, and flourmills were some of the early businesses found in Richmond. Later other light factories made their home in
the area. Richmond continued to thrive until Christmas Eve 1902 when a devastating fire roared through the business district, destroying 20 buildings. This was a major setback for Richmond’s economic growth as most of these buildings were either uninsured or underinsured, leaving the owners without the financial ability to rebuild. By 1905 a building spurt again occurred in Richmond and in the 1900s business changed. Antique stores and restaurants replaced the earlier stores in downtown Richmond but the village retains the same look that it had in 1860 as many of the original buildings are still there. The Village of Richmond remains a prosperous community although it has not grown exceptionally in either size or population. In the 2010 census the village consisted of 4.22 square miles and had a population of 1,901 residents. Traveling along Highway 12 through Richmond, on the way to the lakes of southern Wisconsin, Richmond remains a favorite stop for many vacationers who enjoy a visit to the Village of Yesteryear.

Suspect in brutal beating jailed Victim was hospitalized in critical condition
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
A 25-year-old man accused of felony aggravated battery was held on a $25,000 bond in Kenosha County (Wis.) Intake Court last week in the brutal Christmas Day beating of a Twin Lakes (Wis.) man. Alexander Garcia was taken into custody by Twin Lakes police for his alleged role in the beating of 58-year-old Thomas Eppers Christmas morning. Eppers remained in critical condition at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, where he was transported by Flight For Life helicopter from Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington, Wis. When Twin Lakes police and rescue personnel arrived at the residence in the 1100 block of Pebble Beach Court shortly before 3 a.m., they discovered Eppers suffered severe head injuries, according to a press release issued by the Twin Lakes Police Department. The release noted Garcia was residing at the res-
idence at the time of the attack. Twin Lakes Police Chief Adam Grosz confirmed that alcohol may have been involved. “It is still an ongoing investigation, but we believed alcohol played a role,” Grosz said. Alyssa Rittorno, Eppers’ niece, created a GoFundMe page online to raise funds to help pay medical expenses. According to the page, he is in critical condition and “suffered a brain hemorrhage, five shatter-like fractures, a broken jaw, broken ribs, a collapsed lung and multiple scalp wounds.” Eppers, a father of four, will need facial reconstruction surgery when stable, according to the posting. Additionally, the page noted a baseball bat was used in the attack. The Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office last week was waiting to interview the victim before filing formal charges. Four Illinois men were reported missing and presumed drowned on Mill Lake, just north of Lake Beulah, in East Troy, Wis., early Sunday morning. Two of the bodies – later identified as Lanny Patrick Sack, 20, and Christopher J. McQuillan, 21 – were recovered by searchers on Sunday. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Warden Jason Roberts and the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office reported a third body was recovered at 2:33 p.m. Monday. Identification was pending the Walworth County Medical Examiner notification process prior to deadline for this story. Roberts updated the media at a press conference at about 4:55 p.m. Sunday. He said that alcohol appeared to be a factor. Roberts is a recreational safety warden based out of Waukesha. He said there were 12 friends staying at a lake home on the northern end of Lake

Beulah. Reports indicate the four were from the Winnetka area. Roberts said there was no evidence of personal floatation devices being used by the deceased. Earlier Sunday afternoon, Town of East Troy Police Chief James Surges said a group of four headed out for a canoe ride on the lake between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Sunday. When friends realized the boaters hadn’t returned by mid-morning, they called police at about 11:10 a.m. At a press conference at the scene at about 3 p.m. Sunday, Surges said the green canoe overturned and investigators thought the individuals tried to climb out of the water, but the thin ice beneath them kept breaking. He said by the time emergency services arrived, it was pretty much a straight recovery and not a rescue with one of the victims found by the Lake Geneva Dive Team and the other three victims found almost immediately. Several hours later, Roberts reported that two of the bodies had been recovered and two were
still missing. The DNR is leading the investigation assisted by the Walworth County Sheriff, the Town of East Troy Police Department and the Walworth County Medical Examiner. The following agencies are assisting in the search; Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office, Racine County Sheriff’s Office, Air1 helicopter, fire departments from East Troy, Mukwonago, Vernon, Elkhorn, Lake Geneva, North Prairie and the Town of Delavan and public works departments from Walworth County and the Town of East Troy. Roberts offered the following safety tips for anyone planning to engage in activities around ice or open water during the winter: • Dress warmly in layers. • Don’t go alone. Head out with friends or family. Take a cell phone if available, and make sure someone knows where you are and when you are expected to return. • Know before you go. Don’t travel in areas you are
not familiar and don’t travel at night or during reduced visibility. • Avoid inlets, outlets or narrow that may have current that can thin the ice. • Look for clear ice, which is generally stronger than ice with snow on it or bubbles in it. • Carry some basic safety gear: ice claws or picks, a cellphone in a waterproof bag or case, a life jacket and length of rope. • Do not venture out if you have been enjoying alcoholic beverages. If you go through the ice: • Wear flotation garments that provide buoyancy – such as a float coat or a life vest or a regular jacket. • Carry a set of ice awls or picks in your pocket to help you climb out of the ice hole. • Once out of the ice hole, do not stand up. Rather, walk on your forearms until the majority of your body is on solid surface. Staff Writers Tracy Ouellette and Jennifer Eisenbart wrote this story.

Celebrating life-changing assistance
Thanks to all of you and our dedicated volunteers we were busy during the holidays providing lifechanging assistance. We together have removed the pain and suffering of poverty for over 70 of our fellow creations. Numerous volunteers have stepped up making all our good works possible. As we celebrate a New Year and hopefully new beginnings for many of these people turning to us for assistance, we would like to reflect on some of those helped this past month thanks to all of you. Several elderly people, ranging in age from 81 to 89 years old, were living in fear of becoming homeless. They were struggling alone with food insecurity, cutting back on utilities and medications, whatever sacrifice they could make in order to not become homeless. They did not have any family to turn to for help. These elderly were brought to the attention of The Time Is Now to Help for the assistance they needed. And thanks to our wonderful volunteers they were given that compassionate help. Thanks to your donations they were provided food, utility assistance and rent. They were shown they are not alone, that we do care. Several single mothers caring for children with debilitating and life threatening illnesses were given our compassionate assistance. These mothers spend their days driving back and forth to hospitals

They not only bought the presents, they wrapped and delivered the presents on Christmas Eve and throughout Christmas Day. They brought care and compassion to those that did not think it still existed in our world. They were met with surprise and tears of gratitude by those they visited, making them feel special on a day that can be hard for those living alone or ill. Our volunteers all said they felt blessed to do these good works, allowing them to feel the true spirit of Christmas. Hollywood actress Jamie Lee Curtis has been married for 31 years – consecutive – to the same man. Exclamation point. In Hollywood, this is a big deal. Heck, it’s a big deal anywhere. Putting up with someone – and more importantly them putting up with you – for a really long time requires patience, endurance, courage, a case of recurring temporary amnesia and the ability to put up with cold toes in bed. Because, let’s face it, other people (and their cold toes) can be annoying. When you are married, you are often one of those other people. The ability to ignore and forget about the annoyances helps your spouse (and you) to not bring bodily harm upon one another (or do something nasty like use their toothbrush to clean the toilet). I am grateful almost daily for my husband’s recurring temporary amnesia because I am not easy to live with. None of us are. As far as marriage and longevity goes, thankfully my husband is stubborn beyond words. He’s stuck with me for a really long time. We’ve been together
all of you. Together we replaced pain and suffering with hope, love and compassion. Our hearts were filled with joy due to the love we were able to share. As we begin our New Year we will make it our resolution to say a daily prayer of gratitude for all of you and to pray for healing for the many that turn to us with their physical pains of illness and poverty. Our thankfulness for the healing, physical and financial pain you help us remove has us saying daily prayers thanking God for the compassion you share. Please pray for and remember those we help. Your prayers for healing will join ours and together we will continue to do God’s good works here on earth in the New Year. Please consider donating at this time as every dollar of your donation will be matched by the Fox Charities $25,000 Christmas Miracles Matching Grant
decided. You let him empty the garbage. He lets you sweep the kitchen floor. You can’t imagine trading, but would and could in a pinch. When you’ve been together a long time, you share memories that can’t ever be shared with anyone else ever again. Things like human beings (that you created) entering this world. Deaths – of family, friends and even beloved pets. Experiencing things like that together changes your relationship. It deepens it. Time works that way as well. In a good way. My husband and I have been married a really long time. There have certainly been bumps in the road, but we’ve always managed to continue moving forward. Step by step, mile by mile, we’re in this race together. I know I’m glad to have someone running beside me. And after all these years and all these miles he still takes my breath away. A good race will do that to you. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. She invites readers to follow the Slices of Life page on Facebook.
