Members of the Antioch Upper Grade School Garden Club tend to a hill of topsoil at the Antioch Community Garden, east of Main Street, on May 19. The club, directed by science instructor Barbara Regan (far right) was on hand to prep and plant a variety of vegetables in the garden they’ll be tending this season. The students also planted sunflower seeds along the garden fence in support of the International Foundation for Research and Education on Depression. The sunflower and color yellow are the organization’s international symbols of hope for depression.

The Antioch Village Board in May unanimously approved a request to purchase a 1997 used fire truck from the Knollwood Fire Department for $45,000. This truck will replace Engine 2121, which Fire Chief John Nixon said has had significant problems. He says the department has spent $8,000 for repairs this year and said it could cost over $40,000 to refurbish the engine. Engine 2121 has 96,000 miles on it and has been used on the front line for several years longer than it should have been, according to Nixon. The plan is split the cost of the Knollwood engine between the Village of Antioch and First Fire Protection District 1. “Knollwood is willing to let us make two annual payments for this truck,” Nixon said. “That means the village and fire district would pay $11,250 each for two years.” First Fire Protection District 1 has already agreed to the proposition. Nixon presented his information to the Village Board at its May 13 Committee of the Whole

meeting and the item was approved at the May 18 regular board meeting agenda. Antioch Township resident Mike Clifton attended the joint safety commission meeting on May 13 and challenged Nixon after he presented the idea to that committee. “Last March,” Clifton said, “you assured us at a Town Hall meeting that the fire department had adequate equipment. We just passed a referendum and now you are looking to buy more equipment.” Nixon took exception to the idea that Clifton accused him of deception. Nixon explained at the committee of the whole held later that same day, that he has concern about the health of the entire fleet and that he introduced a capital replacement plan in 2013, prior to the issues with ambulance service. “We were not able to implement that program, having no funding mechanism,” Nixon said. “Purchasing the truck from Knollwood is a temporary measure.” Engine 2121 would be
