Antioch’s zombie population, eager to stay in tiptop shape, take an energetic stroll down Main St. in Antioch on Sunday, Aug 16. Mistaken by some to be delegates to next year’s political conventions, the parading boyfriends and ghoul-friends alike were actually a part of the Zombie Shuffle, the mission of which was to raise funds to help the remodeling of PM&L Theatre’s newly acquired annex located next to the theatre at 879881 Main St. The fun procession through town was sponsored by JJ Blinkers, 896 Main St. and the Haunted House of Macabre, 882 Anita Ave. The latter business had makeup artists on hand to apply the latest in zombie looks to participants. Lindenhurst street paving commences
The Village of Lindenhurst recently awarded a contract for paving of various streets to Payne and Dolan Incorporated of Waukesha, Wis. Residents were sent letters advising them of the impending construction activity in their neighborhood. The streets involved in this project are: • Munn Road from Mallard Drive to YMCA Road • Pinecrest Lane from Hawthorne Drive to Longmeadow Drive • Witchwood Lane from Sprucewood Lane to Rolling Ridge Lane • Cardinal Court, all • Larkdale Court, all • Oriole Court, all • Quail Circle, all • Dittmer Lane, all • Nightingale Circle, all • Partridge Circle, all • Robincrest Lane, all The scope of work includes limited curb and gutter replacement, limited sidewalk removal/replacement, removing all of existing bituminous surface paving, base repairs and application of new bituminous concrete surface paving. Weather permitting, the contractor will begin work
847-395-6216
during the week of August 17. Be aware that not all of the various stages of construction can occur simultaneously; thus, it is likely that there will be periods of time during which no work is being done on your street. While the project may appear to be at a standstill, in reality the contractor is working on another street elsewhere on the project site. As you may imagine, several factors may affect the project completion date, such as inclement weather. In addition, projects such as these have the potential to create inconveniences such as noise, dust, mud, traffic delays and an occasional missed mail delivery or garbage pick-up. Be assured that the Village will strive to minimize the inconveniences, and respectfully request your patience and understanding with the promise that road conditions will be improved once the project is complete. In the event you have questions, comments or concerns regarding the project, contact Charles Hernandez, Public Works Crew Supervisor, at (847) 356-1765.

Remembering the Spirit of ‘45 By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
In 2010, the Congress of the United States passed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in August as the day to remember the” Spirit of 45.” On this day, throughout the nation, groups gather together to honor those who fought valiantly for this country’s freedom and for those on the home front who supported the war effort during the trying days of World War II. 1945 was a different time. Today there is dissension over the United States involvement in the war but in 1945 everyone worked together to protect freedoms and our way of life. Men and women served in the military fighting for the country while at home, everyone endured some hardships to help the war effort. In the United States, rationing of foods, milk, and gasoline became a way of life. With the majority of American men serving in the armed services, women took their place in the factories and became known as “Rosie the Riveter” building weapons, airplanes, boats and other military vehicles. Clothing manufacturers changed their products from dresses, shirts and slacks to parachutes and tents. And every home had a victory garden. This year marks the 70th an-

niversary of the end of World War II and this year, as they have since 2010, the McHenry, Ill., veterans’ groups, the American Legion Post 491, Polish American Legion Post 188 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600, under the direction of Ron Bykowski have produced a tribute to “The Spirit of 45.” The tribute began Aug. 9 with the voice of Kenosha radio’s Lou Rugani, normally heard afternoons on WLIP, as he began his vintage wartime broadcast to the audience in Veteran’s Park. The broadcast included music by Bill’s Little Big Band playing favorites of the 1940s in the manner of the famous swing bands of the time. The Legacy Girls added their voices to the entertainment as they did a review of the popular Andrews Sisters songs. The commercials read by Rugani were for products popular in the 1940s, most of which were unfamiliar to the younger crowd. The real reason for everyone being here were the group of 29 WWII veterans seated directly in front of the band shell. This group of veterans, who made the trip to this celebration, still exhibit the glow of pride at serving as part of the world’s greatest generation. A married couple, the Palikowskis, celebrating 70 years of marriage,
both served in World War II. While he was in Germany, she, a nurse, was stationed in Japan. Each veteran was acknowledged by name as they were recognized for their service. In 1945 a photo was taken of a sailor kissing a nurse o the streets of New York by a Life magazine photographer, which has been sculpted into a bronze statue, bigger than life, according to Bykowski at a cost of $180,000. “There are four such statues and we have had this one for four years,” Bykowski said. Twice they have been told that the statue was going to another state but it still remains making its home at the VFW Hall. “When they realize how difficult it is to transport something this large and heavy, they back out,” Bykowski said. The celebration is a festive occasion with food, drinks and displays of WWII memorabilia, much of it owned by local collector Pat Wirtz. At the close of the program the seriousness of the occasion is evident as the colors are presented by the sailors from Great Lakes, and a rifle salute is given. Then the buglers take their stations around the park and the haunting notes of Taps are played while doves are released a symbol of peace.

Coyote problems in Fox Lake’s Fox Ridge subdivision
There have been several complaints regarding coyotes in the Fox Ridge Subdivision over the past few weeks. One complaint was that the coyote chased a woman and her child. It is not unusual to see coyotes near residential areas bordering on open space where coyotes find their natural prey. Coyotes are naturally timid animals and will usually flee at the sight of a human. If they linger or approach you, it’s time to begin “hazing.” This is a term used to scare or chase them away: • Be loud. Do not turn your back; • Wave your arms, clap your hands and shout; and • Make as much noise as possible. This information should be shared with neighbors, friends

Note: Hazing should never be attempted if the coyote is accompanied by pups or appears to be sick or injured. Small pets and children should never be left unattended, and dogs should always be walked on a leash. Problems are more likely to occur when the animal is out of the owner’s control. If a coyote approaches, pick up the pet or child, then start hazing. If the coyote does not leave, back away slowly while continuing to haze and go indoors if possible. Any aggressive behavior should be reported to the Fox Lake Police Department at (847) 587-3100.

The beauty of Bong County is home to state’s largest recreation area future of the property, began a drive to protect the area for eventual use as a recreational area. Successfully working with the state Legislature, the Bong Memorial Recreation Area was dedicated in 1967. Today the Bong Recreation Area is popular with visitors year round. Due to its large size and varied terrain, there are recreational activities available in this park that are not found in other smaller state recreation areas.
And a lake, too There is no end to outdoor activities while visiting the area. Non-motorized boats such as canoes or kayaks are enjoyed on Wolf Lake. Fishing at Wolf Lake is accommodated by the urban fishing pier and other locations along the shore. For horseback riders, there are 13 miles of trails that can be accessed from Parking Lot J or from the trailhead lot. A state trail pass is required for those 16 years of age and older. Riders must bring your own horse, as none are available at the park. Because of the size of the park, there is room for more activities than are normally allowed in state parks. The park includes areas for dog training, dirt bike and ATV riding, model rocket launching and model airplane flying. Hunting and trapping are allowed in much of the park. The park also offers a variety of wildlife for visitors to encounter. Many species of birds make their home in the park and others spend time here as they migrate. While there are so many activities to enjoy at the park in the summer, don’t forget to visit in winter. Bong Recreation Area offers cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and sledding. Ski trails are not groomed but still will present an enjoyable ski. Snowshoeing is allowed north of Highway BB and off trail anywhere in
A park tour The first stop upon entering the park should be at the Molinaro Visitor Center to view displays and hands-on exhibits. Live animals are featured and, in the solarium, seasonal exhibits feature such topics as butterflies. The center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. year round and from Memorial Day to Labor Day on weekends from noon to 3 p.m. Many visitors come for the day to spend time hiking, biking and picnicking in one of the many designated areas. There are six shelters that may be reserved and also four other open picnic areas that have picnic tables. With more than 16 miles of trails for hiking, there is plenty to explore. The marked trails are found throughout the park and are color-coded. For a shorter walk, two miles of self-guided interpretive nature trails are available. Looking for an immersion into the great outdoors? Reserve one of the 217 campsites of which 54 are equipped with electrical hookups and make it your home for a few days or longer. For those with disabilities, there is a fully accessible cabin available.
Homemade Breakfast & Lunch Specials Every Day Starting at Noon
Camping sites are popular and must be reserved in advance at www.wiparks.net or by phone at (888) 947-2757. Both flush and pit toilets are available throughout the park, although flush toilets are closed during the winter.

Looking for a place to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities with family or friends? A place located not too far from home but far enough to make you feel that you are in a vast open area away from everyday stress? Consider a visit to the state’s largest and oldest recreation area, which is located just nine miles west of Interstate 94 on Highway 142, The Richard Bong State Recreation Area consists of 4,515 acres available for a variety of outdoor activities. The area that is now the park was first the home of English settlers who found that it was a good place to establish farms. From 1842 farms began to appear on the landscape as these immigrants took advantage of the rich soil and tended their fields. As found in most of Wisconsin, farming became a way of life for those who settled here. This peaceful farming community began to change in 1955 when the U.S. Air Force began buying property in the area with the intention of building a Strategic Air Command Base that would be the home of B-52 bombers. The base was to be named in honor of Maj. Richard Bong, a WWII pilot from Wisconsin who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his successful completion of 40 aerial victories in combat. Construction on the air base continued through the 1950s. By the late 1950s the base was considered obsolete and unneeded due to other military bases in the area, leading in 1959 to cancellation of the project. Local citizens of the area and state Rep. 10th annual fundraiser doubles revenue of initial event By Cathy Kozlowicz CORRESPONDENT
hen Jill Donnelly was told her son, Kade Vance, would never be able to walk, talk or live independently three weeks after a Nov. 27, 2004 car crash, Donnelly’s response was, “That is not acceptable. “I was devastated,” Donnelly said. “I was clueless on what to do. I was thinking, ‘What do I do now?’” That day, Dave Vance, Kade’s father, was driving to Janesville from their rural farm in Delavan when the driver of another vehicle traveling at 70 mph went through the stop sign and hit Vance’s car. Kade was ejected 40 feet from the car and had suffered a severe closed head injury, bruising in his lungs and liver, facial lacerations and a neck injury. He was in the hospital for nine weeks. He remained in a coma for two weeks before he opened his eyes. And even when Kade was awake, he still did not have much movement or activity. His family was elated when, at the hospital, Pat Ehlen, Kade’s grandmother, dropped her phone in the toilet. Kade started laughing. “The doctor saw this (sense of humor) as a positive sign as it shows higher brain functioning,” Ehlen recalled. However,

Kade is now very active and has participated in track and field and Future Farmers of America at Whitewater High School. “I love anything being outside and doing with my hands,” Kade said. “I love fixing things and putting things together.” One example of that was replacing the carburetor on his father’s snow blower – a project he did with his shop class at the high school. Kade, it could be said, surpassed everyone’s expectations, but it did not come without plenty of effort and hard work on his part and the support of his family. He had physical, occupational and speech therapy three times a week, Botox with corrective casting with his feet, horseback riding with the SMILES program and swim therapy. “Everything that was available, she did,” Pat said of Kade’s mom. Kade said he is now looking toward his future. He has a dream of renting an RV with his mom, traveling across the country and holding a fundraiser for a new family each week. Part of that dream includes Kade wanting to drive the RV because, he said, he is very eager to obtain his driver’s license. It won’t be easy but his family is helping him prepare for the written portion of the test. Kade’s dream makes perfect sense. Just ask him. “I love helping people,” he said. “People helped me, and I want to give back.”

Summertime grant generates $20,000 in assistance
This week we share the breakdown for the Summertime Foundation $10,000 matching grant. We like to share with all of you and the Summertime Foundation, which made this matching grant possible, where every penny was spent to help those most in need. Every day we receive letters, phone calls and emails from friends, neighbors, case workers and often times people in need write a letter requesting the kind of help that The Time Is Now to Help, all of us together, can give. People desperate for car repairs to retain jobs or get to medical care, children in need of food, school supplies and shoes, senior citizens in need of beds, dental care, glasses and toiletries, single mothers unable to pay high utility bills and rent. There are so many different reasons why our fellow Americans need our assistance. Job loss, medical emergencies, accidents, expensive medications, lack of child support and other unplanned life emergencies are usually the cause. Whatever the cause of poverty, thanks to all of you and the Summertime Foundation we were there to help over 45 people in their most desperate time of need. The Time Is Now to Help and all those we assist are so grateful for everyone’s generosity
By
SAL DIMICELI Columnist
and faith in our mission to remove the pains of poverty. This is how all of us helped: Rent and shelter – $10,176 Two young women with life-threatening diseases were given help with rent assistance. The suffering due to their condition is far beyond anything a young person should have to endure, but they are with dignity and safe from homelessness thanks to the Summertime Foundation and all of you. Both were awaiting a decision on their disability, unable to work or even leave their apartments with the health care their conditions entail. Four single mothers with children were provided security deposit and first month’s rent to enable them to move to safe shelter, preventing homelessness. A senior citizen with cancer and his wife were given rental assistance. These are just a few examples of how your donations, matched by the Summertime Foundation $10,000 matching grant, were used this past month to remove the pains of poverty. Thank you and God bless you.
Utilities – $5,050 Electricity – $3,250, gas – $1,800 Thanks to the Summertime Foundation $10,000 matching grant and your generosity, a working poor family will get through the summer months without their utilities disconnected. Job loss and low wages put them at risk for living without hot water, lights and appliances. A job opportunity will keep them safe going forward now that they are up to date on their past due utility bills. A senior citizen who used her limited income to pay for medications and a car repair came up short when she received a high utility bill from running her airconditioning. Because of heart disease she has to run her air-conditioning or risk even further complications when it is hot and humid. Three single mothers with children were given help with both high gas and electric bills thanks to all of you and the Summertime Foundation. These single parent households will not risk eviction due to failure to pay utilities, lack of refrigeration, loss of hot water and so much more, thanks to all of you. Food – $816.48 Valuable food assistance and necessary emergency food deliveries were made possible by you, our donors, matched by the Summertime Foundation
$10,000 matching grant. The pains of hunger were removed for children home for summer break, senior citizens cutting back on their food expenses to try to make ends meet and working poor families unable to purchase healthy food choices. Grocery gift cards were given to those that have transportation to grocery stores. Food was purchased by volunteers and delivered to those who are home bound as a result of lack of transportation or health conditions. Mothers cried happy tears when they received food for their hungry children and senior citizens were smiling once more when they no longer were only living on dry cereal or canned soup. All our fellow creations felt the love, caring and sharing you and the Summertime Foundation shared with them by giving them the simple gift of food. Transportation –$2,185.52 Safe, reliable transportation was a blessing for a working poor family, a senior citizen and a single mother. If you have ever had car trouble you know how important reliable transportation is. If you need that transportation to get to your job that pays for your food and rent, where even missing just one day of work will mean the difference between paying your bills or coming

up short, you know how desperate you would be for reliable transportation. For families going through illness and frequent doctor and hospital visits, the desperate need for safe, reliable transportation can be an overwhelming fear. Thanks to you and the Summertime Foundation, we have removed the fear of job loss and provided safe transportation. Beds – $1,772 A group of senior citizens living in lowincome housing were provided with new mattresses, box springs and frames. Some had old worn mattresses, and some were sleeping on old couches and chairs. All of these poverty stricken senior citizens were moved to tears by the gift of comfortable sleep provided by you and the Summertime Foundation. Being a senior with disabilities makes life hard enough, you shouldn’t have to also endure lack of sleep and increased pain due to the poor support of a sagging mattress, couch or chair. Thank you Summertime Foundation and all of you for providing restful, life improving sleep. Every penny of the Summertime Foundation $10,000 matching grant funds, along with the additional $10,000 in matching funds donated by all of you were used to provide the above assistance. The many people turning to us for assistance say thank you from the bottom of their hearts for the pains of poverty you have removed from their lives. Our mission to help our neighbors, our senior citizens, our children, our veterans, our handicapped, our American families is a reality thanks to our communities coming together to change these lives together. We together make all this possible. I began The Time Is Now to Help on my own over 25 years ago and now all these years later I am so blessed to have a whole community behind everything we do. Thank you and God bless you. The Barnabas $61,000 matching grant is matching your donation, dollar for dollar. Every donation you make will be doubled at this time. Our caring and sharing is only possible thanks to all of you and our wonderful matching grant donors. Thank you and God bless you for helping.

Slices of Life She wasn’t even my dog. Not even close. Even though she and I lived in the same house, she clearly answered to another master – my husband. Still, I loved her like you love a family dog that’s been around for more years than you have fingers. She loved playing fetch. She was a retriever, so I guess that makes sense. We could throw a ball or a stick (or whatever object she was fetching that day) for hours and she’d keep going until we made her quit. Her favorite place was the lake. She loved to swim. Combine that with retrieving and you had perfection – from her perspective, at least. Each summer, she’d find herself a good stick and it would be her “toy” to fetch from the lake during the long, hot days we spent there. My husband would throw it as far as he could and she’d joyfully (and I do mean joyfully) bound into the water – swimming once it got deep enough. She’d grab the stick in her mouth, swim back to shore and drop her toy at my husband’s feet. Then she’d give whomever was nearby a doggy shake shower before turning toward the lake to fetch again. And again. And again. As long as we’d let her. I’m so glad we had the lake for her to love. She was a good dog (great

dog) in most regards. She didn’t chew or jump on the furniture. She was awesome with kids and she patiently and gently put up with the cats (sometimes with a deep doggy sigh). She was pretty good about staying in the yard (unless a neighbor’s garbage was calling to her nose). If something was broken or someone got into the cat treats, she was pretty sure she was in trouble, even when it was clearly the cats’ fault. She was a trustworthy, loyal companion. She never did learn to walk properly on a leash. She wouldn’t relent to it, always tugging and pulling to the point that we thought she might choke. I am sure she fully understood the “heel” command. She was a smart girl. She just refused to acknowledge it. It was one of the few instances of her asserting her independence. Another involved her phobias. She was a big dog – 85 pounds in her heyday – but the smallest details could put her in a tizzy. Certain floor coverings were taboo. She’d walk on wood, but not
laminate. Vinyl was okay, but not her favorite. She refused to go down the stairs to the basement. The kitchen pantry terrified her. It happened to be where we kept her food so that sort of benefitted us. One time we got her a fancy new water dish. She wouldn’t drink out of it because it scared her. She went out the back door to do her business, but would only access it from the right side of the doorframe. She wouldn’t go out the door leading to the garage. The garage itself, however, was fine. We quit trying to figure her out years ago and just loved her for what she was – quirks and all – because every family has its quirks. Her three favorite times of the day were breakfast, lunch and dinner. Her favorite food was scrambled eggs. When my husband entered the kitchen, she figured she had a chance of eating and she’d give him a stare down, darting her eyes between him and her food dish. We called this look “the eyeball.” After lunch she got a treat and wouldn’t let up until you gave her one. The peanut butter flavor gave her the toots so we quit buying those. The hardest part about having a dog is that they grow old too soon. She was old and this has been coming for some time. We’ve known

she was nearing the end and I thought I was prepared. We talked about her ailments and the fact that she might be suffering. She was less active and seemed sad sometimes. She hesitated before going upstairs because it took effort for her to climb them. She quit jumping up in the morning in anticipation of breakfast and instead would stay sleeping under the bed. This summer, she didn’t
really fetch the stick, but carried it in her mouth while wading in the lake. Doing the normal things was getting harder. We all saw that. And we knew. And I thought I was ready. But you’re never ready. Not really. I’m not sure it’s possible. Still, I didn’t realize how much I wasn’t ready – to wake up without her under the bed. To never throw the stick for her again, or get the
eyeball or make her eggs. She wasn’t even my dog. But she was our dog. And she was a part of our family – an important part. I’m going to miss her. Sure am. Already do. with a time of 10.84 seconds. The Plane Pull features the ultimate tug-of-war competition, as teams of up to 20 battle a UPS Airbus A300, weighing more than 190,000. That’s right, the plane weighs more than 90 tons. Each team raises a minimum of $1,000 to participate (only $50 per person for a team of 20). Special Olympics Illinois and the Law Enforcement Torch Run will host the Seventh Annual Plane Pull at O’Hare International Airport on Sept. 19. The 2014 event was a record-breaking success, as 83 teams participated and more than $150,000 was raised for the athletes of Special Olym-
pics Illinois. Teams compete in one of three divisions: • Open Division (ideal for companies, school teams, gyms, crossfits, clubs, friends and families) • Public Safety Division (law enforcement officers, fire fighters, paramedics, DNR, DOC and military personnel; teams need at least 10 public safety competitors to qualify) • Hotel Division (new last year, and back by popular demand, this is a division created solely for groups in the hotel industry) For more information, visit: www.soill.org/event/planepull/.

Two area beaches closed, one on advisory status McHenry County Department of Health conducted beach water samplings at 37 licensed beaches on Wednesday, Aug. 12. One beach is under advisory status and two beaches are closed due to elevated bacteria levels. Advisory: Island Lake – Veterans Park Island, 332 W. State Road Closed: Park and Beach, McCullom Lake and Indian Ridge 1 South, Wonder Lake Resampling for all beaches that are closed or on advisory took place on Aug. 13 and the website will be updated as soon as possible. Residents should visit the MCDH web-
page (www.mcdh.info) for the latest information on these beaches. To prevent illness associated with swimming, all licensed beaches on the 12 lakes in McHenry County are tested every two weeks for E. coli throughout the summer to determine water quality. Water sampling results are reported to the appropriate beach authorities. MCDH will post an advisory or closed signage for beaches with elevated E. coli results. All beach water results and locations are readily available at the MCDH webpage www. mcdh.info (click Environmental Health, Public Beaches) or call (815) 334-4585.
Alden man’s body found JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter
For more information about the PM&L fundraising campaign and expansion plans, visit www.pmltheatre.com.

Reduced fee water testing offered in August In recognition of Safe Drinking Water Month, McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will offer reduced fee water testing for individual well water users through 31. Residents can have their well water sampled for coliform bacteria and nitrate for $18. Testing your well regularly is the only way to determine whether the well water is safe to drink as many contaminants are colorless and odorless. Water from a public or municipal water system is regularly tested for contaminants regulated by Federal and state standards. Bacteria and chemicals can get into well water and contaminate it in different ways. Some bacteria and chemicals occur naturally. Contaminants such as nitrate can come from animal waste, wastewater, flooded sewers, polluted storm water runoff, fertilizers, agricultural runoff or decaying plants. High levels of nitrate in drinking water can cause illness in young children and pregnant women. Coliform bacteria are microbes found in the digestive systems of warm-blooded animals, in soil, on plants and in surface water. Sterile sample containers from the Department are required and are available at the locations below. Samples can
