Alliance aims to improve lives through exercise By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Prevention and restoration are a large part of the health care services the Antioch Area Health Care Accessibility Alliance makes available to Antioch Area residents. AAHAA has three programs to promote both. The groups are A Matter of Balance, Joint Mobility and Health Walk.
“We run three sessions, physical therapist Susan Thiel explained. “They are in the spring, summer and fall. During the winter, ice and snow make getting here dangerous for our participants. Matter of Balance Thiel, who works out of Condell Hospital, leads the Matter of Balance program. The group meets at St. Ste-

The game will feature Harlem-style comedy basketball featuring high-flying slam dunks, games with the kids and comedy. This event is a fundraiser for Open Arms Food Pantry. Team Antioch is comprised of coaches, educators, ministers, business owners, village officials and residents. Tickets are available at the following locations or online: Village Parks De-
partment, Antioch Community High School, Piggly Wiggly, The Lodge of Antioch and Antioch Senior Center. The cost is $10 for adults; $7 for students (ages 6 to 17); and free for children ages 5 and younger when accompanied by an adult. Additional tickets will be available at the door. The class can have from eight to 16 participants and when the group is larger, parish nurse Gloria Stevens is on hand to help. “The usual age range of participants from 60 to 80, Stevens said, “but several who are in their 90’s have come. The sessions are open to all. Thiel received training for this program in 2011 and this is the fifth time she has led it. “The purpose is to empower people to keep moving and to live as fully as possible instead of feeling they must be confined to their homes. The class encourages participants to think about areas in their homes that might need modification to make them safer, like putting up railings on staircases and paying attention to the placement of throw rugs and what types of rugs would be safest. Matter of Balance uses normal walking and chair exercise, light weights and education to help participants. That education teaches people to make their homes safer and to be on the lookout for possible obstacles when out and about. Callie Moulton said, “Matter of Balance has helped me

Data breach will lead to phishing scams Area consumers warned to be wary in wake of JPMorgan breach
Consumers should expect a wave of phishing attacks from scam artists attempting to capitalize on the announcement that JPMorgan Chase suffered what has been reported as the largest data breach ever warns the Better Business Bureau. Chase announced that more than 76 million bank accounts were compromised in a data breach in which customer names, addresses, phone numbers and email ad-
dresses were taken. However, the bank says that no account numbers, passwords, or Social Security numbers were stolen. “While the compromised data cannot be used to directly steal money from Chase accounts” says Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “Scam artists are likely to use news of the announce-

data breach announcement it’s likely that the volume of these scams will increase, and scammers will use the breach as the reason for the contact. It’s important for Chase customers to remember that even if they are affected by the data breach Chase will not under any circumstances ask them to verify sensitive account information by phone, text or email. ment to scare consumers into providing sensitive information like bank and debit card numbers and other sensitive information.” It’s common for consumers to receive automated phone calls, text messages, and emails from scammers claiming that their account has been “deactivated,” and to reactivate it they must cough up sensitive account information. know: No customer financial or account data was compromised, and currently Chase says there is no need for existing customers to change their online account passwords, request new debit cards or enroll in credit/identity theft monitoring. Chase is reporting that all its account holders using Chase.com, JPMorgan Online, Chase Mobile and JPMorgan Mobile have been affected. If your account was affected Chase is legally obligated to notify you by mail. • Chase says that they’ve closed the data breach, and that customer information is no longer accessible to hackers. Visit www.chase.com for more information about the data breach. How to protect yourself in a phishing scam: • Do not respond to emails purporting to be from Chase claiming that your account has been deactivated or compromised, or emails that try to direct you to a third-party website. Ignore text messages pre-
tending to be from Chase urging you to call a phone number to reactivate or verify your account. The messages may also urge you to reply via text with an account number or Social Security number. Hang up if you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from Chase who tells you that your account has been affected in the data breach. Chase will not call customers individually to notify them that they’re information has been compromised. Do not divulge personal information, including bank and debit card numbers or Social Security numbers, either online, over the phone, or by text. Banks and credit unions will never contact you and request sensitive information in this manner. Consumers who have questions about the data breach- or are contacted by a scammercan contact BBB by calling (312) 832-0500, or by emailing info@chicago.bbb.org. For more consumer tips, visit www.bbb.org, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Those military veterans sometimes turn to mood-altering substances that can result in abuse and related disorders. Currently, there are approximately 40,000 veterans in Lake County alone, and of those veterans, 20 to 25 percent struggle with mental health issues. One of the most anticipated movies of the year opens with a close-up shot of Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) running the blonde hair of his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike) through his fingers and musing, “What are you thinking? What are you feeling? What have we done to each other? Those three questions set the stage for almost everything else that follows, as director David Fincher brings author Gillian Flynn’s wildly successful 2009 best-seller, a shocking mystery sizzler about one marriage’s dark descent into mayhem and madness, to the screen. The film has been

Nick’s twin sister, drawn into the vortex of small-town news gone national. Neil Patrick Harris and Scoot McNairy appear as two of Amy’s old flames, both of whom may have gotten a little too close to the fire. Sela Ward and Missi Pyle play TV mavens who fan the media feeding frenzy. The tone of the movie – the look, the pace and the music (by Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor) mirrors the material: Dark, creepy, ominous, unsettling, cold. If you’re one of the six million people who’ve read Flynn’s book, you’ll know where everything’s headed (mostly) before it gets there. But if you haven’t, you’ll be swept away in the masterfully crafted brew of mind-bending misdirection, outright lies, psychotic scheming, and detailed criminal procedural that will keep you guessing right up until the end. This isn’t a snuggle-up movie by a long shot, and its bleak view of marriage – and what might be going on beneath its seemingly placid surface – won’t send date-night couples home feeling warm and fuzzy. In an early scene, Nick and his sister play an old board game from their childhood, The Game of Life, as they discuss Nick’s upcoming anniversary – which, as he’s about to discover, won’t play out quite the way he’s planned. In Gone Girl’s game of life, there aren’t any winners, only players playing each other in a toxic, brilliantly twisted endurance match from which no one emerges unscathed.

a box-office leader in its first week of release. Gone Girl begins with Amy’s disappearance, on the morning of her and Nick’s fifth wedding anniversary, in what looks like a home invasion and abduction. But was it? Nick quickly becomes the prime suspect, clues begin to pile up, suspicions mount, secrets are revealed – and things start to feel like they’re not what they seem to be. Fincher unspools the mystery with the same cool, narrative precision he demonstrated in Fight Club, The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. He toggles back and forth between past and present, and presents hesaid/she-said versions of Nick and Amy’s story through flashbacks and cutaways to Amy writing in her journal – which later becomes a key piece of evidence, and another strand in the plot’s tangled web. The casting is first-rate. Affleck adeptly balances Nick’s jock-ish “homecoming king likeability with the deep, troubling doubts that swirl around his character and his motives. Although she’s appeared in numerous other movies, this is absolutely Pike’s breakthrough; Amy is a complex, complicated character, one that you’ll remember long after the movie is over – and so will, in all likelihood, voters for next year’s Academy Awards. Tyler Perry is terrific as the big-city, top-dollar defense attorney Nick hires to take his case. TV and Broadway actress Carrie Coon brings both heat and heart to the role of

Buttons and Bolts quilt shop celebrates one year By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Last year, it became obvious that Buttons and Bolts – a fabric and quilting supply store in Salem, Wis. – needed more space. “In order to serve our customers, we constantly need to provide new fabrics,” explained Heather Deegan, owner of the store. “So we had to move to a larger space. Now located next to Bumper to Bumper on Highway 50, still in the Town of Salem, she was surprised to learn how neighboring businesses support each other, no matter what. “When the guys at Bumper to Bumper asked our landlord who was moving next door and Bob told them we were,” Heather said, “he heard over and over, my wife, my mother, my sister quilt.” “So now,” she quipped, “when a man comes into Bumper to Bumper for parts or service, his wife might come into our shop and vice versa.” Buttons and Bolts was not quite a year old when Heather moved to a larger space, quite an accomplishment for a new business. “We fill a niche,” Heather said, “and we worked with WIBIC (the Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation) to develop a good
business plan. Our vendors work with us too. When we succeed, they succeed.” Moving to the larger space doubled the room for workshops. “We have 10 workspaces,” Heather said, “room for the quilters and their machines. It’s important to use the same machine for an entire project. Each machine is set up differently and an eighth of an inch matters in a finished quilt.” Heather and store manager Sue Heinlein have developed a friendly, relaxed ambiance that encourages creativity. “You don’t stop here for five minutes to make a quick purchase,” Heather explained. “You could, but we don’t rush you. It takes time to find the right materials for a quilt, to find patterns and colors to compliment each other.” Getting ready to make a quilt for a specific season or event? All the fabric, notions and patterns are here. Don’t know how to quilt but want to learn? Buttons and Bows offers about ten classes every month. Some are recurring, like Quilting 101, 102 and 103. One month, classes will be held on weekdays and the next, on weekends. “We have customers that work weekdays and some that work weekends,” Heather
said, “and we accommodate both.” Quilters like to have a good shop close to home and they like to travel to other quilt shops and many shows and expos around the country. “I have a group of about 12 ladies who plan to visit here from Oconomowoc,” Heather said. “We recently took a day trip to the Madison Quilt Expo, hosted by Nancy’s Notions. Nancy Zieman is the owner of that shop and a host of the PBS quilting show.” A quick perusal of the web will net a number of websites that show quit show and expo schedules from California to Maine to Paducah Kentucky and all points in between. Three websites the Report found are sewingexpo.com; festivals-and-shows.com and quiltcon.com. Buttons and Bolts is a place to bring friends, make friends, travel to new places and unleash your inner quilter. The shop is open Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. The address is 27642 75th St. in Salem, the telephone is 262-586-2533 and website buttons-and-bolts. mother would threaten them with punishment if they woke her in the morning or did not get to the school bus all on their own. The brother recalled babysitting his sister from a very young age while his mother went out drinking at night. He remembered sleeping in his sister’s room and pushing the dresser in front of the door to keep the “bad men” out. The sister began to cry when he said this saying, “I don’t know what would have happened to me if my brother wasn’t there to protect me. One time when he came home from school I was trying to push one of the men out of my room. He had to hit the man in the back with his school books to stop him. All our mother did was yell at us for hitting her boyfriend.” They shared many other incidents where the brother was there to protect the sister from the mother’s numerous boyfriends. When I heard all this I decided I needed to visit the mother the next day. When I knocked on the door numerous times, the door was finally opened by a woman who was obviously intoxicated. She was unkempt. I told her who I was and asked her about her children. She interrupted me with the comment, “I do not want my kids back. Good riddance to them. I don’t have to be responsible anymore because they are over 18.” She infused this tirade with much profanity

The brother would pick her up at night from her job as he did not want her walking or riding her bike alone after dark. Two months later I visited the brother and sister and I am happy to report they are doing much better. The brother had received his promotion that would help provide the additional funding needed for all their expenses. We have provided hope for the future where there had previously been fear and despair. This is all possible thanks to you. Both the brother and sister were able to achieve their goals with our help. We are busy using the funds from the Fox Charities summer 2014 $25,000 matching grant to provide poverty assistance to those in need in our communities. We will soon share where every penny of your donations were used to bring poverty relief and

and proceeded to slam the door in my face. I decided my next visit would be with the employer of the young man. He was very complimentary of the young man’s drive and work ethic. The employer could not say enough good things about this young man. The one comment he made to me still sticks in my mind. The employer told me, “At least he does not come to work anymore with black eyes and bruises from fighting with his mother’s boyfriends.” I planned a second visit with the brother and sister the very next day. I asked to go over their bills and budget. They were very organized and I guessed that came from a lifetime of caring for themselves and having to grow up much too fast. They had their full budget written out in detail. I could see they just got by each month with no room for emergency repairs. They did not have any funds in their budget for entertainment or clothing or education, like most people their age. They were paying rent, utilities, food and gas for the car. I really liked this brother and sister. I could see they had suffered a lot due to the terrible, abusive parents they had been given, but somehow they had managed to raise themselves to be good, responsible, hardworking young adults. I knew they needed our help to ease their budget and help get them back on track. After we reviewed the budget I asked the brother and sister about their plans for the future. The brother shared that he was receiving

Dear W.C., My brother and I are in desperate need of your help. We moved away from our mother as soon as I turned 18. My brother is two years older than I. We were both living with our mother. She is an alcoholic and had different men coming to our house nearly every night. We tried to get our Mom to quit drinking and straighten out her life but she would not change. My brother wanted to leave as soon as he turned 18 but was afraid to leave me behind. There were many times he had to protect me from the drunken men my mother would bring home. He always made sure I, and even our Mom, was safe. He went right from graduating high school to working full-time so he could at least make sure we had the lights on and food. My brother and I are now living in an apartment we rented a few months ago. The reason we need your help is we were not able to pay all the rent last month. Our car broke down and my brother needs it for work. They would not give us our car back unless we paid the bill in full. We had to use all we had saved for our rent and all our other expenses to pay for the car repair. We thought we were doing

Student health and wellness center opens Lake County’s first student health and wellness center officially opens this week. Round Lake Area Schools Community Unit School District 116 will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new Round Lake Area Student Health and Wellness Center on Oct. 16. The event is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. The center is one of 65 in Illinois. The center’s goal is to improve the physical and emotional health of students attending the high school and to teach them life-long, positive health behaviors by providing quality, comprehensive primary health care. The Round Lake Area Student Health and Wellness Center is located at 800 N. High School Drive (the reception will be in the school’s library). For more information, call (847) 377-8055. The center grew out of the Round Lake Area School District and a group of concerned citizens wanting to address growing health care needs and barriers to health care access. Of particular concern was the impact health issues were hav-
ing on academic achievement. “This center will be a great asset to the community by providing health care right where the students are, said Tony Beltran, the Health Department’s Executive Director. “School-based health centers historically have helped children stay in school by identifying and addressing health problems that may affect their ability to learn. Students will have access to a comprehensive range of medical and behavioral health services at the center. The menu of services was determined by certification requirements established by the Illinois Department of Human Services, with input from the community through information sessions, community open houses, and surveys organized in 2012 and 2013. All students, regardless of their ability to pay, will be eligible for services. In order for students to be seen at the Center, a parent/guardian must sign a consent form. “We are thrilled about the center because school-based health centers are a major component of the nation’s health care safety net, said Constance
Collins, Superintendent of Round Lake Area Schools District 116. “They not only enable children with acute or chronic illnesses to attend school, but also improve their overall health and wellness. The center’s staff is comprised of a nurse practitioner, a licensed clinical social worker, a certified substance abuse counselor and a medical assistant. A part-time psychiatrist will also be part of the team for consultation and medication management. The center’s hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The center is a 1,180-squarefoot newly constructed addition to the existing building. The construction was funded through a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Healthcare Foundation of Northern Lake County funded a feasibility study, planning grant and start-up of operations. The Health Department is the primary health care provider in collaboration with local hospitals and social service agencies. For more information, call (847) 257-1200.

Fall fest features games, haunted trail and bonfire The Lindenhurst Park District with help from local businesses, schools and volunteers will host a fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 18. The event will be held at 513 Forest View Drive in Lindenhurst. Organizers have planned a variety of events. Attendees can start off with a wagon ride through McDonald Woods, then stroll over to the Costume Contest at the Cornstalk Stage. Those still searching for that perfect pumpkin, can
check out the Millburn Tree Farm selection. The Witches’ Kitchen will be grilling food that can be topped off with a giant pumpkin or spider web sugar cookie. A pirate-themed game tent will feature an inflatable pirate ship, Casper moonwalk and happy ghosts straw maze. There will also be a haunted trail with 12 mortifying scenes with unnatural creatures waiting to scare the unsuspecting.
There will be additional entertainment at the free Cornstalk Stage – from spooky Halloween tales to mystifying magicians. At dusk the Lake Villa Volunteer Fire Department will start a bonfire and free apple cider will be served heated in a cauldron. In case of unsafe weather, the trail will be cancelled, but most of the other activities will take place at the Lindenhurst Park District Community Center Gym, starting at 3 p.m.

Lake County residents warned of phone scams
Deli Specials
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to be alert when speaking to strangers on the phone. Scammers can be very friendly, referring to the victim by first name or asking about their family and often requests for money to be wired to an account for bond or air fare. The IRS and U.S. Treasury will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone or wire-transfers. If you get a call like this, take down the phone number and tell them you will call them back. Then call your local police agency for assistance in verifying if the call is a scam.

Richmond murder is part of tonight’s show For one dark night only, several of McHenry County’s tragically departed return to describe the details of their demise starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the McHenry County Historical Society Museum in Union. This year’s Historic Halloween recounts four cases of murder and mayhem – as told by the deceased. The public is invited to listen while Charles Eldredge of Richmond describes his unsolved murder, as well as the murder of his brother – slain by the same gun 24 years earlier. Learn
about the sensational murder trial of Lillian Gathman in 1933 and the equally titillating case in 1942 of Dorothy Kohout. Was it arson that claimed the lives of her two children or just a tragic accident? Finally, jump ahead to 1964. Why did it take 30 years to identify the skeletal remains of John “Butch Masters of Barrington Hills? This year’s cast includes Marlene Lantz of McHenry, Peter Gill of Woodstock, Mary Tait of McHenry and Chelsea McDougall of McHenry. Accompanying them will be Nicholas “Don’t
Shoot the Piano Player Renkosik of Wonder Lake. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Eckert Hall auditorium, 6422 Main St. A new optional haunted entrance has been added for the courageous. Halloween refreshments follow in the Society’s West Harmony one-room school. Admission to the popular “Return of the Dead program is $5 for historical society members, $7 for nonmembers. This program is not suitable for young children because of the subject matter and make-up. For information, call (815) 923-2267 or visit www.GotHistory.org.

County reminds residents of landscape waste restrictions McHenry County Department of Health reminds residents of the restrictions regarding the proper disposal of landscape waste on your property. Landscape waste consists of grass or shrubbery cuttings, leaves and tree limbs. The McHenry County Public Health Ordinance restricts burning of onsite-generated landscape waste to Saturdays and Sundays during April, May, October
and November. No burning is permitted from dusk to dawn. The burn area must meet the setback requirements of at least 100 feet from a school, business, church or house and 50 feet from a barn, shed, detached garage or other accessory structure. Landscape waste cannot be brought from another property to be burned for disposal. Burning of any materials, such as cardboard, paper, plastics, construction mate-
rials, and manure, other than onsite-generated landscape waste, are prohibited at all times. Most municipalities have ordinances which restrict or prohibit the burning of yard waste. In areas where there is not a ban or more restrictive ordinance, the county ordinance, which is in effect year round, must be followed. An Illinois EPA, Bureau of Air, Application for Open Burning Permit is required for habitat
reclamation burns regardless of acreage. For more information, contact the Illinois EPA, Bureau of Air Permit Section at (217) 782-2113. Instead of burning, the health department encourages a more environmentally sound approach to open burning of landscape waste: • Reduce/Reuse - Use a mulching mower for grass and leaves or a chipper for branches. Native landscaping will also reduce the amount of yard waste. • Recycle - Composting landscape waste can reduce material volume by 70 to 80 percent and compost can be a soil conditioner to improve plant growth. Licensed municipal waste
haulers in McHenry County are required to provide pick up of landscape waste from residential customers, however, an additional fee may apply. Some waste haulers contract with municipalities, neighbors and homeowner associations to provide collection of landscape waste. Residents are encouraged to work collectively with neighbors and associations to identify the most economical solution for their neighborhood. Residents may also drop off landscape waste at an approved compost facility or landscape waste transfer station. A listing of these services is available at www. mcdh.info, “Environmental Health,” link to nuisance con-
trol, open burning. Communities with ordinances that meet or exceed county standards, as well as those with total bans on burning, are also listed. For enforcement of open burning issues, call the health department at (815) 334-4585 or after hours at (815) 3447421) or your local police or fire non-emergency number. If reporting an emergency complaint that is life threatening or is a fire safety issue, call 911. Complete details about the Ordinance, suggested alternatives, exemptions and permit applications are available online on health department’s webpage www.mcdh.info or by calling (815) 334-4585.
