It’s the time for all wannabe witches, pirates, princesses, cowpokes, homicidal maniacs, ghouls, wizards, gangsters, and flappers to check their costumes – Halloween is approaching fast. Now second only to Christmas in popularity, the last day of October brings out the fun in everyone. And one area store is more than ready to meet any Halloween need you have. The maroon-painted brick store in the middle of Antioch’s first downtown block looks like a regular business. Its neighbors are regular buildings featuring a pub and eatery, a sweet shop, a jeweler, and the Chamber of Commerce. The disguise works, even with bright yellow and black signs in the two picture windows proclaiming COSTUMES. Eclectic displays below those signs invite closer looks. The door opens on a place filled floorto-ceiling and end-to-end with masks, makeup, magic kits, novelties of all kinds, glimmering carnival beads, gag gifts, a cemetery plot or two, and a larger-than-life lighted pumpkin-headed robotic ghoul that utters terrible threats in

Rotary Club steps up in polio battle To prepare for its celebration of World Polio Day, the Antioch Rotary Club has been raising funds for its share of the fight. The Club set a goal of $2,000 for 2014. Some of the money was raised through a Rotary Dunk Tank in conjunction with the Antioch Lion’s Club Chicken Barbeque and Auction held this past July. Other funds were gathered through collection jars located around town at other community events. Since 1987, Rotary International has been on the leading edge of polio eradication. To help raise awareness and raise critically needed funds, Oct. 24 has been declared World Polio Day. The Antioch Rotary Club has been in on the fight for eradication of polio from the beginning. Over the past 27 years the club has hosted dozens of fundraisers and awareness events raising thousands of dollars. On World Polio Day, members of Antioch’s Rotary Club will participate in a live-streamed global event presented by Rotary International. This multi-media event will provide an up-to-the-minute status update of how the polio eradication program is proceeding. Invited guests will include Rotary’s Global Polio Eradication Partners; celebrity ambassadors including Ziggy Marley; polio survivors including inspirational athlete Minda Dentler and Rotary members from around the world. The $2,000 raised by the Antioch Rotary Club in 2014 has been sent to Rotary International, which serves

Green Living Expo is set for Nov. 1 The public is invited to discover how to create a more energy efficient household and make the daily routine more earth-friendly at the Seventh Annual Green Living Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, at McHenry County College. The event will be held in the MCC Gym/Multi-Purpose Room and Commons Area. The college is at 8900 Highway 14 in Crystal Lake. More than 70 local green businesses and organizations will help residents explore eco-friendly ideas to take home, talk with renewable energy installers about the current market, get green financial advice, learn more about McHenry County’s food co-op and where to get great healthy local food and find green gift ideas for holiday shopping. The event will also feature rain barrels, vermicomposting, pet friendly items, natural skin care vendors and many more. Some featured outdoor exhibits (in parking lot B) are: the Fox River Fish Viewing Tank, a 2,500-gallon tank showcasing the beauty and complexity of the Fox River fish and ecosystem and a CalypSol craft, a solar-powered canoe that navigated the en-
tire length of the Mississippi River. Other outdoor highlights include several makes of electric vehicles, including two Teslas. In addition, the Illinois Solar Energy Association will showcase their solar house, an interactive and educational exhibit and the Illinois State University Solar race car and team members featuring Nick Reichmann, an MCC Alum. Emily Zak, another MCC alum, will provide information about the Loyola Retreat and Ecology Center. Visitors will have an opportunity to receive free giveaways and a win a chance for a pair of Chicago Blackhawk tickets donated by Waste Management. The Green Living Expo is free and open to the public. Visitors may bring old bicycles and bike parts that will be given to Working Bikes, an organization that repairs bicycles and donates to those in need. Help them reach their goal of 50,000 bikes donated. In addition, the McHenry County Department of Health will accept batteries for recycling. Woman who escaped fire is afraid to ask for help By
SAL DIMICELI Columnist
over 10 years. Her husband had left her 10 years before that, when she was in her 50s, to move in with a much younger woman. She said she was glad she had not heard from him in years. She only had her own Social Security she was living on. It had been enough for her to get by in her previous garage apartment rental. I asked the senior woman if she had found another rental yet. She told me about an apartment becoming available in a few weeks but she no longer had a security deposit and first month’s rent. They had been used to staying in the most overpriced weekly rentals. I went over her budget and saw she would be able to afford this rental if we provided the security deposit and first month’s rent. She also had a small amount overdue on her utilities that would have to be paid in full to enable her to have the new utilities put in her name. After a thorough review, I told her we would pay for the rent, security deposit and overdue utility bill. We also would pay for a cleaner, more reasonable motel for the next two weeks until her apartment was available. The senior woman looked close to tears when I told her all we would do to help her in her time of need. She picked up her little dog and tried to hide her tears as she hugged her little friend. She began to cry saying, “I am so grateful we both got out of that fire alive. I would never have been able to survive if my little friend hadn’t made it. Then I was so worried we would become homeless and I would not be able to feed him. I would have fed my dog before I bought food for myself. Now you come here and take all that worry away. You have no idea how relieved I am. God bless you and God bless the donors that have helped us.” The friend that had written the letter put her arms around the senior woman saying, “See I told you they would help you. I told you they were all good people.” The senior woman hugged both her friends as she shed tears of relief. That same day, along with the letter writer’s
and rundown motel room. The senior woman did not seem to realize who I was until her friend explained she had written a letter on her behalf. The friend said to the senior woman, “Remember I told you how The Time Is Now to Help had helped me a few years ago when I was sick and had lost my job. They paid my rent and utilities and even brought over some food for the children and me.” The senior woman looked embarrassed but asked some questions about The Time Is Now to Help. She confessed she had read some of our newspaper columns and had thought about writing to us for help, but did not have the courage Dear readers, to do so. She said, “I was I was familiar with the worried you would tell me name of the woman who I should get rid of my dog had written the letter. help, we moved the senior woman and her pet to the clean motel. She had hardly any belongings other than her car and the few donated items. A volunteer did some shopping and dropped off several bags of food, toiletries and personal items. We provided gift cards for clothing and household necessities for when she made the move to her apartment. Two weeks later we helped her move her few belongings into the apartment we had already had a new bed and bedding, a donated couch, table and chairs delivered too. Food was in the cupboards and refrigerator. I invited the senior woman in to see her new apartment. The senior woman walked into her apartment and spun around in a circle, taking in her new surroundings. She had a huge smile on her face as she set her dog down and walked around the small apartment touching all the items you had provided for her. I could see the astonishment on her face. She finally turned to me, wrapped me in a big hug and began to cry happy tears. She asked me, “How is all this possible?” I told her about all of you and your generous donations that made it possible. I told her how all of you are so remarkable and how much we all accomplish together. She was crying as she said, “I never knew there were so many good people that care? Please tell everyone thank you for everything you have done to help me. Hopefully someday I can pay it forward just like my friend did for me.” We are busy using the funds from the Fox Charities summer 2014 $25,000 matching grant to provide poverty assistance to those in need in our communities. We will soon share where every penny of your donations were used to bring poverty relief and assistance to those most in need in our community. Dear W.C., Could you please help a senior citizen I know is in need of The Time Is Now to Help? She is living in a motel room after the garage apartment she was renting caught fire. She managed to get out safely with her dog, but none of her belongings. She has used what little she had saved to pay for the motel room. Even in the cheap, shabby motel, the only one she was able to bring her pet to, it is much too expensive for her small income. I have dropped off food and some donated clothing. Another organization paid for a week in the motel and gave her a small packet of toiletries. This is all she has to her name. This woman has no responsible family to turn to for help. She often told me the only family she could count on was her pet. Can you please stop by her motel to check on her?

‘ABBA Mania’ set for area performance
A tribute to one of the world’s finest pop groups, “ABBA Mania: The Official West End Tribute Show” comes to the College of Lake County in Grayslake on Friday, Nov. 7. ABBA Mania has been playing to audiences of all ages since 1999, selling out theatres in the United Kingdom and around the world. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber
Center for the Performing Arts. With favorite hit songs such as “Mamma Mia,” “Dancing Queen,” “Waterloo,” “Super Trouper” and more, this concert presentation celebrates the music and style of ABBA, reviving audiences’ memories of when the Swedish quartet ruled the airwaves. The seasoned British cast of ABBA Mania features Carly Broome as Agnetha, Katrina Wallis
as Anni-Frid (Frida), Toby Boyle as Bjorn and Danny Gluckstein as Benny. In 2002, ABBA Mania was invited to perform at London’s West End, where it played for 18 weeks at the Strand Theatre. That year the show made its German debut at the Deutsches Theatre Munich, where it sold out 21 performances. In 2003, the show was presented with a prestigious Radio Regenbogen award
for the best musical of 2002. In 2004, the cast performed a TV special viewed by over 11 million European viewers that celebrated 30 years since ABBA came to prominence. Performers included original members of the ABBA band, stars from the musical “Mamma Mia” and even the iconic Bjorn Ulveus, one of ABBA’s original members. ABBA Mania has toured internationally to Venezuela, North America, Tahiti, Mex-
ico, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Luxembourg and many more, making this the world’s most successful touring ABBA show. Tickets are $48, $42 and $38. CLC student/teen: $15 and children: $12. A $2 per ticket JLC facility fee will be added at the time of purchase. Other fees may apply to Internet purchases. CLC student tickets are not available for online purchase. Teen and
children tickets must be purchased with adult priced tickets. For more information or to order tickets, visit www. clcillinois.edu/tickets or call (847) 543-2300 (option 5). California man extradited for courthouse threat A California man has been extradited to Lake County to face charges that he allegedly called in a threat to kill people and “light up” the courthouse in Waukegan in September. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident and identified the
caller as Daniel B. Pederson, 33, of Calabasas, Calif. Pederson had two outstanding local warrants: a 2011 failure to appear arrest warrant for criminal damage to property and a 2013 violation of order of protection arrest warrant. On Sept. 18, an arrest
warrant for Pederson was issued for making a terrorist threat (Class X) with bond set in the amount of $1 million. On Sept. 25, Pederson was arrested on the warrant in California. Last week, Pederson was extradited to Illinois. Pederson appeared in bond court on Oct. 14 and
his bond was set at $2 million. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 18. On Sept. 12, about noon, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received information pertaining to a threat made against the Lake County Courthouse located at 18 N. County St. in Waukegan.
An unknown male called the Illinois Department of Health Care and Family Services Inspector General’s Office, stating he was going to kill people and light up the Gurnee Police Department and Waukegan Courthouse. It was believed the caller’s driver’s license was
suspended for failure to pay child support and that the Gurnee Police Department had arrested him for driving on the suspended driver’s license. A search of the courthouse for a bomb was negative and security personnel were increased.

Believe it or not, there is a science to growing those huge pumpkins. It’s called barology and it is the science of weights and gravity. And there are plenty of other pumpkin growers out there to help you realize pumpkin dreams of epic proportions. Last year, the giant that Paul Lee of Silver Lake, Wis., grew was nearly 350 pounds and that had been his best so far. Until this year, when his giant is now nearly 1,000 pounds. Previously, Lee planted other vegetables along with his pumpkins in his 30 by 40 foot garden area. “I usually have other vegetables growing,” Lee explained. “Tomatoes, zucchini, all the usual. I couldn’t do it this year. I had a quadruple bypass and there was no way for me to get the garden planted as usual.” So his brother, John, helped him and planted three pumpkin seeds. These weren’t from the grocery or hardware store. These are pedigreed seeds, marked with the names of the sires and dams, the year and the size of the pumpkins from which they came. Pumpkin growers harvest and mark their seeds, creating seed lines that they use themselves and share with others. Since growing giant pumpkins is not just a national but international affair, Lee even has seeds from France. Two of those seeds produced vines and Lee hand-pollinated the flowers. One vine produced the cream yellow giant that Lee calls “Brother John.” “If it weren’t for my brother,” Lee said, “there would be no pumpkins so I had to name it after him.”
Lee concentrated on his pumpkins this year. He spent three to four hours a day, caring for Brother John. He buried the massive vines in the soil. This lends stability for the vine whose leaves can blow in the wind. A root will grow under each leaf and this adds the nutrients the giant pumpkin receives. Lee uses as much rainwater as possible and the garage rain gutIf it weren’t ters channel rainwater for my brother, into a large there would be no tank where the rain wapumpkins so I had to ter is mixed name it after him.” with wa– Paul Lee on the name ter-soluble fertilizers of his nearly 1,000-pound that is sent pumpkin right to the beginning of the root system through a hose. Man arrested in attempted beer theft A 48-year-old Lake Villa man was arrested and charged with retail theft Oct. 9 for allegedly attempting to steal two cases of beer from the Antioch Piggly Wiggly store. About 2 p.m., Antioch Police were contacted about a retail theft that had just taken place at the Piggly Wiggly, 460 Orchard Street. Storeowner David Karaczewski informed officers that a white male left the business with two cases of Budweiser beer worth $27.98 without paying for them. When Karaczewski confronted the male at his vehicle, the male removed the beer cases from the rear seat of his car and then drove away from Karaczewski with his rear passenger’s door open. Karaczewski provided

• JJ Blinkers a sepulchral voice. And costumes are everywhere. All this is accompanied by spooky music. The knowledgeable staff is normally in costume. A young lady named Jordan Frye is working during a recent visit. Her short gingham dress and her pigtails evoke memories of dolls, but she has suture-like marks across both cheeks and across her forehead known as a “zipper face.” She’s dressed as the character Sally from “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Even the manager and the owner are in costumes. What the windows proclaimed is true – this place has costumes of all kinds and sizes. Joanne Linker (in the black and red with the black feather fascinator) and her partner, Rich Hart, began JJ Blinkers almost 30 years ago. Their business anniversary is Memorial Day 2015. “We started selling novel-
HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, OCT. 22, 2014 • 11 (Continued from front page) ty items,” Joanne explains. “Our first customers came back, and asked for more, especially silly stuff like gag gifts.” So they added more, and more, expanding from a small counter in the front flanked by simple displays to fill the entire shop to the point it looks like it might burst. When asked how much inventory the store carries, Joanne smiles and shrugs, “A lot.”
Costumes to gag gifts Kim Bulava has been the manager here for 15 years. “It just pieced itself together,” she said. That would make it a store that grew itself. On a recent visit Kim is “The Crazy Cat Lady,” dressed in a coppery-colored sleep shirt patterned with striped cats, a blonde wig with pink curlers, black
glasses with huge rhinestone curlicues that tangle with her curlers, and ruby sequined house slippers. The items shoppers discover in this clean and well-organized store include everything from note cards to gag gifts to (as the advertising states) rubber chickens and Whoopee Cushions. And bunches of costumes, wigs, masks, and other things too numerous to mention. “We sell year-round,” Joanne said. “There always seems to be a holiday or celebration going on that requires someone to get a costume.” People buy costumes for murder mystery dinners, theme parties, bar parties, Oktoberfest (German and Bavarian themes). There are “era” parties that target a certain generation or decade. And school children want costumes for book reports to dress as the character their report is about. High
schools have Spirit Week. Daddy and daughter dancing partners need costumes, too. Then there are the big celebrations of Mardi Gras and Halloween, when costumes are expected on everyone participating. “We have stuff you can put on quickly, as well as more complicated costumes that need makeup, and take more time,” said Joanne. “A costume doesn’t have to be complicated to be fun.”
Well-known clientele The store has masks to paint, as well as the required brushes and paints. They also have ready-to-wear masks. The most popular costumes currently are pirates, super heroes, gangsters, flappers, 1950s poodle skirts and other items from that era, Mardi-Gras-themes, and the never-out-of-style clowns.

“Emmett Kelly was here just after we started,” Joanne said. (He was one of the most famous tragic clowns in the history of clowning, and worked for Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus during the 1950s). “That was quite an honor. the much-loved “Goonies.” Joanne is figuring out a way to show the movies made by young local Hitchcock wannabees. JJ Blinkers also recently started something unique in its history. During the middle of September, for the third year in a row, a special effects makeup demonstration was given by Deadgar Winter just in time for Halloween. He hosts “Deadgar’s Dark Coffin Classics” on Channel 14 in Kenosha and Milwaukee. He learned his craft at the hands of a master mask molder and special effects makeup artist from Universal Studios. Deadgar teaches students to achieve a horrible appearance for head, neck, and arms. Customers enjoy coming to JJ Blinkers and trying on costumes, especially if they’ve been disappointed by ones they’ve bought via internet that have either been backordered (sometimes making them unavailable for an upcoming holiday), or that don’t fit. Satisfied people return to the shop, which makes Joanne and Kim very happy. “Another cool thing happens here,” Joanne said. “We’ve had kids come in after we opened, and they were 12-13. Now they’re grown up, and they’re introducing their own kids to the store.”
All for fun This place was obviously started by a person with a wacky sense of humor. And around every corner, there’s more to see. Joanne admits she’s drawn to movement and sound, hence the robotic ghouls. “We like what we do, and we’ve gotten known all over the area for it,” she said. Joanne and Kim are constantly bombarded by applications from people who want to work at the store. Some teenagers like the place so much that they’ve offered to
work for free. “We’re a family here,” Joanne said. Perhaps more like the Addams family than any other, a loosely related bunch held together by delight in the downright peculiar and the macabre. They are making a success of a unique and imaginative business. “We’re not a cookie cutter operation,” Kim said. Definitely not. This is the place for costumes, masks, special effects makeup, costumes, rubber chickens, magic kits, Whoopee Cushions costumes, feathered angel wings, balloons, Mardi Gras necklaces, costumes, feather boas, real-looking gravestones, and other essential items necessary for becoming someone or something else. And JJ Blinkers sells costumes year-round. Find the store online at jjblinkers.com, or by phone at (847) 395-3770.

Man charged in shooting of deputies Two sheriff’s deputies were shot when responding to a domestic dispute at 1313 W. Northeast Shore Drive, Holiday Hills, about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Suspect Scott B. Peters, 52, of Holiday Hills, was taken into custody shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday following a daylong manhunt. McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren confirmed the identities of the two deputies wounded as Deputy Khalia Satkiewicz, 39, a Scott B. Peters 12-year veteran, and Deputy Dwight Maness, 46, a seven-year veteran. Satkiewicz, who was shot in the leg, was released from Centegra Hospital, McHenry, Friday, according to reports. Maness was listed in fair condition at Advocate Condell, Libertyville, on Friday. Maness was shot in the abdomen and the leg. Peters is currently in the custody of McHenry County Correctional Facility. He is charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder – Class X felony – and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm/police officer, also a Class X felony. Peters, who is currently unemployed and living on disability income, is described in various reports as having a military background. He made his first court appearance Friday where bond was set at $1 million. On Friday, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office investigators recovered what is believed to be the rifle used in the incident, at about 1:30 a.m.

Firefighters honor their own
After nine years of fundraising by the firefighters of the Richmond Firefighters Association, the first phase of their Fallen Firefighter Memorial is complete. The memorial surrounds the fire station’s electronic sign on the front lawn of the station along Highway 12. The project is intended to honor the fallen firefighters who lost their lives at the Twin Towers in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, and also to remember the many men and women who have served the community as firefighters of the Richmond Township Fire Protection District. The firefighters have been saving up for this project for nearly a decade. Every month the firefighters make personal contributions to the fund which is supplemented by their annual AFFF Bike Ride and Pig Roast fundraiser every year. This year marked the eighth annual AFFF Bike Ride and Pig Roast. The project was funded 100 percent by the firefighters. “Knowing how hard our firefighters worked to raise these funds over a period of years on their own, to construct such a worthy project for our community and the fire service as a whole, speaks loudly about the character of the men and women who serve our community today as present day firefighters, medics and EMTs, Richmond Fire Chief Rick Gallas said. “I am very proud of their efforts and their support of the Richmond Township Fire Protection District.

Veterans Day ceremony is Nov. 7 at MCC McHenry County College will host a Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony beginning with patriotic music by the MCC Concert Band and Chorus at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7. The observance will be held in the MCC Gym/ Multi-purpose Room in Building A. The College is at 8900 U.S. Highway 14 in
Crystal Lake. Community and student veterans, along with faculty, staff and guests, will gather for the program that will include speakers, patriotic music, posting of the colors by a combined service Color Guard and bagpipe music. In addition to recognizing veterans, visitors will have an op-
portunity to mingle and meet other veterans at a reception following the ceremony. “Our annual Veterans Day program is one of the many things we do to honor our country’s military veterans,” said Don Curfman, instructor and advisor for the Student Veterans Association at MCC. “We also help veterans transi-
tion from the military service to college with our student organization and our Student Veterans Resource Center.” The keynote speaker is Michael A. Harvey Jr. LMSW, U.S. Army, retired. Harvey’s family has a combined total of 490 years of military service. “Everything that the military service trained me to do
has served me well, so that I may be of service to others,” Harvey said. Harvey earned dual bachelor’s degrees in social work and Christian studies, followed by a master’s degree in social work from Loyola University. Kati Beck of Marengo, president of the Military and
Student Veterans Association at MCC, will also share her thoughts and comments during the ceremony. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the program. For more information, contact the MCC Veterans Day Committee at (815) 479-7635.

(Continued from front page)
The project got a jumpstart this summer, when Munson Ski and Marine of Fox Lake donated an old electronic signboard for the project and then Sign Appeal donated the installation of the sign. The main sign was cleaned up and painted and the station’s flagpole was moved from its original position to the memorial area with two smaller flag poles added. With the American Flag waiving proudly atop the tallest pole, the two smaller poles will fly the Illinois State Flag and The Fallen Firefighter Memorial Flag. The first phase of the work consisted of laying down a combination cement/ paver brick patio area and walkway around the electronic sign. A life-sized statue of a firefighter will soon be hoisted onto a brick pier that has been built alongside the sign.
The firefighter statue will face Highway 12 to serve as a reminder for all who pass by it, of the sacrifices that were made at the Twin Towers on 9-11 and by today’s firefighters who continue to risk their lives to help others. A planter box will be located under the electronic sign for annual plantings of flowers. In the spring, the firefighters will dress the area up further with perennial flowers planted around the memorial area and add park benches around the patio area. Dwarf boxwoods will surround the display pad for the antique fire truck. A dedication ceremony is planned for late spring 2015. At some point in the future, the names of those who have served our community as a firefighter will be etched into the paver bricks around the sign.
