Residents vote down ambulance tax By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
The election is over, the dust has settled and the votes have been counted. The effort to impose a tax to support an ambulance service in the Village of Antioch and First Fire Protection District 1 failed in the Nov. 4 election. In the village, 4,064 voters cast ballots on the referendum, which was voted down by a 53-47 percent margin. In Fire Protection District 1, 3,434 residents cast ballots, with 59 percent opposed. Antioch Township supervisor Steve Smouse said, “I remained neutral during this process, but the people have spoken. This would have added $1.4 million to the tax burden our residents bear.” The measure would have raised an estimated $1.5 million the first year with cost to an owner of a property valued at $100,000 paying additional $83 as a result. If you use the service, Smouse said, it would cost an additional $1,200 to $1,400
for an actual ambulance ride. Smouse said he hopes it’s back to the drawing board and not taking the same referendum question back to the ballot box. He says he’s seen other governmental agencies lose a referendum and then bring back the very same question six months later. “Then it loses again,” Smouse said. “It is an insult to the intelligence of the voters if that happens here. They said no. “They need to pare things back,” he continued. “We need a different model, with more volunteers. Maybe we should have a fire chief who has been with Antioch Fire for a while, someone from the area who understands local needs.” Smouse said he was pressured by several people to release township funds for ambulance service purposes. “I never received a request from the First Fire Protection District and our attorney

Some classes and competitions are held in various places throughout Kenosha County, including the Trevor Fire Department building and Central High School. There are four other trainers at Loving Paws: • Stephanie Challand was a client in April 2009 not long after adopting her third dog, Lance. She realized her passion for working with dogs and began to train. She began instructing in 2010. • Melissa Mlandinic first came to Loving Paws as a client in early 2010 with her Vizsla, Hazel. She became hooked on nose work and is enthusiastic about introducing the activity to others and is the volunteer coordinator for the K9 Nose Work trials. • Jennifer Lueck became involved with Loving Paws in early 2004 when her dog, Casey, was a puppy. Canine nose work is the fun search and scenting activity for virtually all dogs and their people and was inspired by working detection dogs. It begins with a dog that gets excited about using his nose to seek out a favorite toy or treat reward hidden in one of several boxes. The game is expanded to entire rooms, exterior areas and vehicles. As a dog grows more confident with his nose, target odors are introduced, and competition skills are taught. This easy-to-learn activity and sport builds confidence and focus in many dogs, and provides a safe way to keep dogs fit and healthy through mental and physical exercise. The national association for this work is the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW). Founders Ron Gaunt, Amy Herot and Jill-Marie O’Brien pioneered the concept of detection-style training and competition for pet dogs. The first official NACSW trial was held in January of 2009, in Southern California. Since then there have been more than 135 trials in 17 states. For more information about this sport, go to www.k9nosework.com or www.nacsw.net.

Fundraising event will support Children’s Advocacy Center The Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center Friends Committee will host its first fundraising event on Thursday, Dec. 4, at Glen Flora Country Club, 2200 N. Sheridan Rd., in Waukegan. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. and all proceeds will go to the center’s Healing Garden. It will feature dancers from Shine Bright Dance Studio in Antioch, silent auction items and a local children’s choir. Tickets can be purchased for $40. Call (847) 377-3000 or email Carrie Flanigan at cflanigan@lakecountyil.gov to learn more about the event or to purchase tickets. In June, the Children’s Advocacy Center Friends Committee was created under the direction of State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim. The advocacy center is a non-profit organization that works to provides a safe, friendly, less invasive environment to children when being interviewed, according to information provided by the group. The center is focused on creating fewer traumas for child victims, and being the first step for these children in their healing process. Nerheim summoned a group of concerned people to learn about the needs of the center and to help educate the community on its existence. As a result, the Friends Committee was developed and has begun the process of helping to raise funds for the Healing Garden. The garden will be located at the center and will allow children and their families to reflect in a safe space, free of shame and fear. The space will be available for children to play, interact, and learn that they are not alone in their healing process, according to the group.

Those are not the fiscal policies Smouse has held during his time as township supervisor. “I was re-elected by 60 percent of the voters to continue my fiscal policies. That wasn’t going to change at the request a couple of people.” The question now remains, how will officials raise the funds needed to support the ambulance service. Station 3 is owned entirely by Fire Protection District. Both the village and district share ownership of Stations 1 and 2. Antioch is the last area in Lake County that has no ambulance tax. The area previously received ambulance service from The Antioch Rescue Squad. The rescue squad operated privately and took no tax money. It went out of business last year when the Fire Protection District 1 did not renew its contract.

Town Board declines to take action after voters oppose measure By Gail Peckler-Dziki
Hike in search of animal tracks and other clues to uncover the secret lives of animals at the park and in your yard. Meet at the Visitor Center. 10 to 11 a.m. • Sunday, Dec. 21: Celebrate the Solstice. Enjoy a natural celebration at this busy time of year. Learn how others have celebrated the return of the sun then hike and do some of your own celebrating. Dress to be outside. Meet at the Amphitheater. 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, call (262) 878-5600.

The Salem Town Board took no action on the three ATV routes proposed by some town residents at the regular Nov. 10 board meeting. The measure appeared as a non-binding referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot and read, “Shall the Salem Town Board adopt an ordinance which would authorize the operation of all terrain vehicles on certain Town roads designated as ATV routes?” The measure failed in a vote of 2,352 no to 1,835 yes during the Nov. 4 election. The three proposed trial ATV routes would have allowed lake access to residents in three neighborhoods. They are Val-Mar, Timberline and Salem Oaks/ Montgomery Lake. The
last route would have given neighborhood residents access to both Hooker and Montgomery Lakes along town roads. During the citizen comments portion of the meeting, proponents of the measure once again pled their case, stating that the number in favor was not a small number. Opponents pointed out that the margin was large. Opponents of the measure Jerry Leslie and Crystal Koz both stated that the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says its illegal to run ATV machines on roads. According to state ATV advocates there are currently between 6,000 and 10,000 miles of ATV routes/trails in Wisconsin. Trails are considered offroad while the routes are on the regular roads. The miles

voted in favor of the limited trial run, riding ATVs on those roads would have been legal. The discussion started to become heated and people wanted to rebut. However, Town Chairwoman Diann Tesar said that while she wanted to let people speak, there would be no back and forth. When the meeting reached the agenda item for discussion and possible action on the ATV proposal, Tesar said that the board had discussed this at the Committee of the Whole meeting the previous week and had decided to honor the non-binding referendum and take no action regarding it. In a later interview, proponent Arlene Langel said there was no plan to pursue the idea further at this time.

Proponent Karen Fakes said, “I don’t want to beat a dead horse, but the was a lot of misinformation put out. We are only asking for certain roads that will be posted with the proper signage and speed limits.” “We just came back from Darlington (Wis.),” she continued. “They have many ATV routes (on regular roads). There weren’t many accidents and the speed limits were enforced and people rode them responsibly.” Salem resident Kate Johnson commented, “Right now, riding ATV’s on town roads is illegal. You had plenty of time to get out the information you wanted.” If the Town Board had

Skateboarder injured in hit-and-run
A 16-year-old boy on a skateboard required medical airlift after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Beach Park, Ill., Nov. 8, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The suspected
driver was arrested a day later and is facing multiple criminal charges. The incident was reported at 7:20 p.m. Preliminary investigation shows that Conner L. Vixon, 16, of Beach Park was skateboard-
Epifanio Moya
ing on Sheridan Road near Chaney Road when he was struck by a northbound vehicle that did not stop and fled the scene northbound on Sheridan Road, according to the sheriff’s office. Witnesses described the vehicle as possibly a red Chevrolet SUV. Vixon was flown by Flight for Life to Advocate Luther
General Hospital in Park Ridge for treatment of his injuries. His condition was not known at the time of his evacuation, however, investigators were later advised that his injuries were not life threatening. Evidence was collected at the scene and the investigation continued through the sheriff’s Technical Crash In-
vestigations Unit. On Nov. 9, investigators received an anonymous tip concerning the location of the vehicle and driver that struck Vixon. Investigators and deputies located the vehicle in the 10000 block of Beach Road in Beach Park. The driver of a red 2008 Kia Sedona was subsequently identified as Epifanio Moya,
28, of the 1200 block of 34th Street in Zion. Moya turned himself in to investigators for interview. Moya was subsequently charged with the following: leaving the scene of an injury accident (Class 4 felony), failing to report an injury accident (Class 4 felony), driving while license suspended (Class A misdemeanor).

Area organization expects to serve 500 families for holidays By Jennifer Eisenbart STAFF WRITER
T
here is little – if any – time a food pantry is not in need. For the Love Inc. organization, based in Burlington, Wis., the story is no different. Thanks to the generosity of various organizations running drives throughout the year, the shelves are never empty, though – especially not during the holidays. “It’s a stressful time, but it’s a happy time,” said Love Inc. Executive Director Bill Schoessling. The organization has two major holiday drives going right now. The first provides a Thanksgiving meal to anyone who qualifies for the food pantry, and the second is the “Adopt-a-Family” Christmas program. Schoessling and Program Director Ben Mitchell have been busy in the last week, organizing the boxes that will become Thanksgiving dinners for more than 500 families. While about 500 people routinely qualify and use the food pantry, the holidays always draw extra people who just can’t afford the added food at the holiday table. Love Inc. is prepared to hand out as many as 600 Thanksgiving dinner boxes, valued at $29 each. “We’re still doing signups, and we’ll keep doing signups right until, I suppose,” Mitchell said. While all the food is purchased for the Thanksgiving dinner boxes
– and about 500 are packed and just waiting for the final items like potatoes and onions – Schoessling pointed out the costs have yet to be covered. “We have to pay for it,” Schoessling said. That’s where sponsorship comes in. The $29 price tag covers a $15 voucher for ham or turkey, creamed corn, green beans, cream of mushroom soup, stuffing, potatoes, onions, a pie, cool whip and gravy. An added treat this year is Ghirardelli hot chocolate, donated to the organization separately. Anyone who receives assistance must meet poverty and residency guidelines. And while the need is down slightly, Schoessling pointed to the fact that elderly people on fixed incomes are making more use of the Thanksgiving dinner. “We’re getting an older group signing up,” Schoessling said. “They just can’t make it with the higher food prices.” The Burlington Rotary will do a drive next week for funds, with any member who sponsors a meal getting matching funds. But Schoessling is still looking for donations. The boxes will start going out to qualified families on Monday, Nov. 17, at 9 a.m. “Every 10 minutes, we have three pickups scheduled, from 9 until 4,” Mitchell said. “And a few other people squeezed in here and there.”

Mom needs job, housing after father leaves Dear W.C., My husband left unexpectedly a few months ago. He moved out of the country so he does not have to pay child support. I have been raising our boys on my own ever since. I have only been working parttime since my oldest son was born 6 years ago. I have been looking for fulltime work. We keep falling further and further behind. My landlord is threatening to evict us, and my utilities are overdue. Can you please help us get back on our feet after such a tough last few months? Dear readers, I called the mother who wrote the letter to set up a time to visit. We agreed

to meet in a public place where she would feel more comfortable. I met the mother and two children at a local coffee shop. I offered to buy her and the boys a special drink and snack. The mother declined at first but, when I insisted, they all picked something out. The boys’ faces went from sad to happy as they looked into the bakery case full of goodies. The mother said, “They know we can’t afford
treats like this. This is definitely a special day for them. They haven’t had a lot to be happy about lately.” Once the boys were happily settled with their chocolate milk, cupcakes and a coloring book, the mother and I were able to talk. The mother said, “I don’t talk about a certain man in front of the boys if you know who I’m talking about. They don’t understand where he went and are finally stopping asking me about him five times a day. I don’t know how a man could do that to their own kids.” I agreed with her completely and told her I would not mention any names in front of the boys. Since we had no other
options, we talked the best we could with the children present. I don’t usually like to do this, as it can be very distressing for children to listen in on the stressful events that affect adults and financial problems. The mother said, “They had been on their own for nearly three months now.” The checking account was pretty much emptied when the father left. He took the only good car and left behind his old truck that had over 200,000 miles on it. The few belongings that were worth anything, he had taken with him. The mother said, “I guess that man needed to start a new life somewhere else. I didn’t even see it coming.” Just to remind us they were
listening in, the youngest son said, “What didn’t you see Mommy?” The mother looked at me fighting to keep tears in her eyes as she patted her son’s head saying, “Oh nothing’ my baby boy. Your mommy is seeing just fine now.” Her son said, “I’m not a baby anymore, Mommy. I’m a big boy.” We both smiled and knew we had to be careful with what was said around the little ears. As I had asked the mother to bring her budget and bills, we went over these. The rent was two months overdue but the landlady was being as patient as she could. The landlady had a smaller rental they were willing to let them move into and they had said

• Time is now Is Now to Help would be giving her assistance. I agreed to give her a call. I stepped outside so I could speak freely without the young boys listening in. I told the landlady we were indeed helping the mother and children. She was so relieved and said she wanted to help them as much as she could but she relied on her rental income to get by. I told her we would bring her past due rent up to date and pay the first month’s rent on the smaller rental. When I mentioned to the landlady that the mother was still looking for full-time work she said she possibly had a job. She was looking for someone who could do cleaning and yard work on some of her rentals. The landlady said it could be a full-time job and she could even bring her boys with her if needed. I promised the landlady I would speak to the mother and let her know she would be moving to the smaller rental. I also thanked the landlady for her help with this mother and children. The landlady said, “God bless The Time Is Now to Help for all you do for our community.” I went back in the coffee shop and told the mother about the conversation I had with her landlady. I asked if she would be interested

in the cleaning and maintenance job the landlady had offered. I told her she would even be able to bring the boys when they were out of school. The mother looked shocked and sat thinking for a few minutes. I told her the pay and a few more details. When she looked at me again, tears were running down her cheeks. The mother asked, “This all just happened while you were talking on the phone? This job will be an answer to my prayers. That is the best news I’ve heard in a few months.” One of her sons asked, “What news, Mommy?” The mother clapped her hands as she said, “We are moving to a new home and Mommy just got a job!” With that, both boys hugged their mother and shouted, “Yay, Mommy!” The mother laughed as several onlookers smiled at the happy sight. I went over the rest of her budget, making some suggestions. The mother wrote detailed notes of what she would need to do in the coming weeks to get her finances in order. She would be making a visit to her bank to change her accounts, call her insurance agent to remove her husband from her automobile policy, and she was going to sell some of her furniture so they could
fit in her smaller rental. We also did some minor repairs on the truck to make it safe enough until we received a donated vehicle to replace it with. Two weeks later, I paid a visit to the mother and children at their new rental. It was indeed small but much easier for the mother to keep up with. The mother said, “We really like it here. We are walking distance to everything, even a few of the rentals I am doing maintenance on. After years of having a husband that never did much around the house, I am an expert at doing all the maintenance on a house anyway. This was perfect for me. The boys can play in the empty rentals or in the yards while I work.” I asked how the boys were doing and the mother said, “Each day is a little easier for them. They still ask for their dad, but for now I can change the subject and they seem to forget about it. I am sure they will have a lot of questions for him when they grow up.” I could only feel sadness for what this father had given up for his own selfish wants. He would never know the love of a grown son or the satisfaction of a life spent raising them. The good news was this

In addition to volunteers coming in, the Burlington High School DRIVEN service group will be in Dec. 12, helping pack boxes and ringing bells in the community to raise funds.

The Christmas program involves Christmas gifts for a needy family, which adds up in a hurry. Looking at what an average Christmas costs – anywhere from $150 to $250 for a full family’s worth of gifts – the total cost can exceed $100,000 for the 500 or so families signed up. “We will not let someone go without Christmas,” Schoessling explained. What’s old is new again By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, Kenosha is the fourth largest city in Wisconsin and also the fourth largest on the western shore of Lake Michigan. A city with a beautiful lakefront and a population estimated at 99,889, it is a thriving community that has attracted both residents and visitors to take advantage of its cultural activities, restaurants, and to take a look into its historical past. Kenosha has come a long way since the first settlers made their way from the east coast to build communities in the area. Although there is evidence that the Paleo Indians first settled in the area during the era of the glaciers about 13,500 years ago it was the Potawatomi and Ojibwa Indians who in the 1800s discovered the area where the Pike River met with Lake Michigan. Attracted by the rich vegetation and trees along the shore and the presence of wetlands where birds and fowl were abundant the area was a perfect place for the Indian tribes to settle and hunt. Noting the number of fish, predominately trout or as they were also known pike, who entered the river to spawn, they set up camps where they would be close to the shores for ease of fishing. Prior to 1830 there were at least three Indian villages in the area. All disappeared by 1834 as the Indians moved on to other areas. Eastern settlers arrive A group of settlers made their way from New York to the area in the 1830s. Known as the Western Emigration Company, they were led by John Bullen, Jr. and sought to purchase enough land to build a town. They settled in the area on June 6, 1835. Here they began to build houses out of logs from the many trees in the area. Churches and a school quickly followed and the community became known as Pike Creek. As the community continued to grow, the port located here also became a major shipping port on the Great Lakes. With growth comes changes and in 1837 the name of the community was changed to Southport to
reflect the importance of the shipping port. By 1850 the community was ready for another change. It adopted the name Kenosha a version of the name given to the area by the Ojibwa Indians, “Kinoja.” Although the community is no longer known as Southport, the Southport name remains popular in the community. A south side neighborhood and an elementary school have retained the name and it is often seen incorporated in various businesses in the area. Automobile center While Detroit is thought of as the automobile capitol of the country, in the early 1900s Kenosha became well known as the producer of millions of automobiles and trucks. Several companies were responsible for a variety of automobiles that were developed and manufactured here. By 1900 the Sullivan Becker Engineering firm developed a prototype steam engine. The Thomas Jeffery Company which was known for its line of Sterling bicycles, made the switch to automobiles when they introduced their Rambler Runabout in 1902. It was one of the first autos to be built using a mass production technique. And it was the first automobile to have a steering wheel. Prior to the Rambler, automobiles were steered by a tiller, rather than steering wheel. Jeffrey sold his company in 1915 to Charles W. Nash, who first changed the name of the company to Nash Motors and then upon acquiring the Hudson Company, which manufactured the Hudson automobile, he renamed his company American Motors Corporation. Partnerships including one with Renault and later with Chrysler allowed many automobiles to be manufactured in Kenosha some of them remembered for being named Car of the Year. AMC’s 1963 Rambler Classic was one that was so honored and about 20 years later, the Alliance manufactured with the Renault partnership was also so honored. As the partnership with Chrysler grew a larger plant was needed to meet the manufacturing needs. The small-
Kenosha’s history reflects a city on the rise
er AMC lakefront plant that had produced automobiles from 1960 to 1988 was demolished in 1990. Approximately 10.000 spectators attended the event. Manufacturing fades Today manufacturing is not the primary income producer in Kenosha. Although companies such as Jockey International and Jelly Bellies, a popular candy, have corporate headquarters here, the influence of manufacturing has declined. Tourism has now become a major source of income for the city. The area of the former AMC lakefront plant has been redeveloped into Harbor Park, an upscale area along the shoreline that is now home of elegant condominiums and the center for cultural and waterfront activities. Here visitors and residents congregate to stroll along the lakeshore and enjoy the marina and water park. The Kenosha County was established in 1850 and the City of Kenosha named as its county seat. In honor of its designation, legislators chose to give the county the same name as the city. Railroad effect One of the reasons Kenosha has grown is the presence of the railroad in the community. Train service has been available since May 1855 when the predecessor of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and the Lake Shore Railroad joined their tracks just south of 52nd Street. Passenger service, however, did not begin until May 1866. Kenosha is the only city in Wisconsin to currently have a Metra station. The Metra trains provide service to Chicago, a trip taken by many residents of Kenosha who commute to Chicago for work. Amtrak also provides train service from Kenosha to Chicago and Milwaukee. In 2000 streetcar line service was revived and today it provides transportation from downtown to Harbor Park and the Metra station. Kenosha is noted to be one of the smallest cities in the United States to have a Streetcar System. Plans are to someday enlarge the area served. Like the streetcar line, Kenosha has built a promising future from its solid past.
Once the site of the Nash automobile factory, this lakefront area is now home to upscale condominiums. Close proximity to Harbor Park and the Metra station make this an attractive place for those who commute to Chicago for work.
Even on a cold morning, residents enjoy a walk or run along the lakefront. This resident was not deterred even though temperatures were in the 20s on this morning.
Kenosha’s distinctive red lighthouse is perhaps the most famous and recognizable of the city’s landmarks

Spring Grove woman dies of suspected drug overdose The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is conducting an investigation into the drug overdose death of Cristina Villasana, 21, of Spring Grove. According to the Sheriff’s Office: Villasana was admitted to Vista Freestanding Emergency Center in Lindenhurst at approximately 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11, then transferred to Vista East Hospital in Waukegan where she was pronounced dead at 7:52 p.m. Sheriff’s investigators were notified by the Round Lake Heights Police Department at 6:15 p.m. on Nov. 11,
and immediately began interviewing a person believed to be witnesses to the incident. As a result of those interviews, it is believed that at around 10:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, Villasana ingested a synthetic drug known as “Sass”, a form of ecstasy made from the sassafras plant. It is believed that false information provided by the persons that drove Villasana to the hospital hampered the initial investigation. Sheriff’s investigators are working with the Lake County States Attorney’s Office in an effort to identify the person or persons that supplied the “Sass” to Villasana.
SG police to join seat belt campaign This Thanksgiving season the Spring Grove Police Department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation for an “aggressive” Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign. The campaign will run Nov. 17 through 30 with officers ticketing vehicle occupants for not wearing seat belts. As of Jan. 1, 2012, everyone, no matter the age or seating position, is required by law

in Illinois to wear a seat belt. Children are required to ride in a car seat or booster seat until at least age 8. According to the DOT, a seat belt is the best defense against an impaired driver. Nationwide in 2012, during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, there were 301 people killed in traffic crashes. Tragically, 60 percent of those killed were not buckled up, according to the DOT.
At least one person was seriously injured in a traffic crash Nov. 13 in the 25000 block of Highway 173 in Antioch. The victim was transported from the scene by Fox Lake ambulance to Osmond Park in Antioch where the person was transferred to Flight for Life helicopter for a flight to a regional medical facility. Details regarding the crash and the victim were not immediately available from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Photos by JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter

Students invited enter anti-tobacco media contest
McHenry County Department of Health invites high school and college students to enter its 11th Annual Anti-Tobacco Media Design Contest. Since 2004, the contest has sought to highlight local talent while educating the community of the ill health effects of smoking and secondhand smoke. The theme this year is “the dangers of nicotine.” The entry deadline is Dec. 12. Entries are judged on originality, peer appeal and simple, colorful design. Students can work individually or as partners. Making the final selection are teens from McHenry County anti-tobacco advocacy groups, the health department’s promotion staff, as well as representatives from health departments throughout northern Illinois. Three designs will be chosen. Winning entries will have the student’s name, design and school name displayed on billboards, community posters and signs throughout McHenry County. For a contest announcement and entry form, students should contact their school’s art teacher. For more information about the contest, call (815) 3344525.

Veterans honored during county history project The Lake County legal community held its third annual Library of Congress Veterans’ History Project on Nov. 11, at the Lake County Courthouse. Thirty-four war veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War met at the courthouse for a breakfast reception and ceremony, which included remarks from several 19th Circuit Court judges and performances by the U.S. Navy Bluejacket Choir from the Great Lakes Naval Base. The veterans were then individually interviewed and had their oral histories recorded by court reporters. The typed transcripts will be archived in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress for use by researchers and to serve as an inspiration for generations to come, making accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from the veterans. The reception included Medal of Honor recipient Allen Lynch as a guest speaker. Allen served in the Army during the Vietnam War and earned a Medal of Honor for single handedly rescuing and defending wounded soldiers from enemy attack until locating a friendly force that could evacuate them. Among the veterans inter-
viewed that morning was a U.S. Marine who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor and who later served aboard the USS Kershaw. Another World War II veteran was a First Lieutenant with the Army Air Corps who flew 51 missions over Germany out of England. One Vietnam War veteran earned several medals, including a Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Also included among the veterans interviewed were three nurses and one member of the Red Cross. One of the volunteers, Frederick Dempsey, a 26-year Navy veteran, observed that he enjoyed seeing the veterans enjoying themselves and that it was an honor to give back to the senior veterans. One of the interviewers, attorney Ari Friz, said he volunteered because he believes veterans are amazing people who have given so much of themselves for the country’s freedom. One of the veterans interviewed, Korean War veteran Tony Boeckholt, commented that it was a great experience to share his story and that he was amazed with all the people that put the event together. The Lake County legal community holds the Veterans’ History Project annually on or around Veterans’ Day each year.

In June, the Children’s Ad-
vocacy Center Friends Committee was created under the direction of State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim. The center works in conjunction with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and local Lake County police departments to investigate children who have been physically and sexually abused in Lake County. The advocacy center is a non-profit organization that works to provides a safe, friendly, less invasive environment to children when being interviewed, according to information provided by the group. The center is focused on creating fewer traumas for child victims, and being the first step for
these children in their healing process.
County’s Shop with a Sheriff is Dec. 9 The Lake County Sheriff’s Association third annual Shop with a Sheriff event is set for Dec. 9. The program gives needy children an opportunity to shop for needed items such as winter coats and Christmas presents with a uniformed deputy, corrections officer, court security officer or reserve deputy. The final selections are determined by a school social worker. The number of children selected will be determined by the total donations received. This program is funded by donations. Each child will have a $100 limit. The law enforcement officials will act as chaperones to help the junior shoppers make decisions and assist them in keeping track of how much they
