County recieves StormReady designation In an effort to be better prepared for severe weather emergencies, McHenry County Emergency Management has worked closely with the National Weather Service in Chicago to meet national standards of the StormReady program. McHenry County is one of only 24 Counties in Illinois to receive the StormReady designation. The StormReady presentation took place on Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. at the McHenry County Board chambers during the regularly scheduled County Board Meeting. Jamie Enderlen, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service Chicago/Romeoville office will present the County with
its certification. Nearly 90 percent of all presidentially declared disasters are weather related, leading to around 500 deaths per year and nearly $14 billion in damage. To help Americans guard against the ravages of severe weather, the National Weather Service has designed the StormReady program. StormReady arms America’s communities with the communication and safety skills they need to save lives and property. Many laws and regulations exist to help emergency managers deal with hazardous material spills, search and rescue operations, medical crises, etc., but there are few guidelines dealing with the specif-
ics of hazardous weather response. The National Weather Service recognized this need and designed StormReady, a program to help communities implement procedures to reduce the potential for disastrous, weather-related, consequences. To be certified as StormReady, communities must meet guidelines established by the weather service in partnership with federal, state and local emergency management professionals. Specifically, in order to become StormReady, the community must: Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center; have multiple methods to receive and disseminate severe

weather warnings and information for their community; have various methods to monitor weather conditions locally; promote the importance
of public readiness, including severe weather spotter training; and develop a formal hazardous weather action plan. For more information

Former cop gets week in jail for stealing from department By Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER
A former Genoa City, Wis., police officer was scheduled to start a seven-day jail stint Tuesday for stealing money from his department while on duty. Aaron E. Henson, 37, of Genoa City, pleaded guilty Oct. 13 to reduced charges and was sentenced to a week in county jail with work-release privileges and restitution. Henson was charged in April with misconduct in office, a Class I felony, and misdemeanor theft. He pleaded guilty Oct. 13 to two misdemeanor charges – resisting or obstructing an officer and theft of $2,500 or less. Judge James L. Carlson sentenced Henson to a week in jail and to pay $2,983.70 in restitu-
tion. According to the criminal complaint in the case: The Genoa City Police Department asked the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department to help investigate the theft of money from a locked bond deposit box at the police department. Chief Joseph Balog said his administrative assistant reported money missing from the lock box April 7. Balog instructed the assistant to place $230 in the lock box and record the serial numbers. On April 14, the $230 was missing along with additional funds totaling $1,728.30. On April 14, Balog put $400 in the box, recorded the serial numbers of the bills and set up a video camera pointed at the lock box. On April 15, the $400 was missing, and the surveillance video showed
Henson, who was on duty at the time, using a fly swatter to retrieve money from the box. Henson’s residence was searched, and Henson initially said he hadn’t heard about money being stolen from the department. When a detective told Henson a theft was caught on video, Henson admitting taking the money, according to the criminal complaint. Henson told the detective he was having financial problems due to his wife being out of work. He said he’d stolen money previously and used it to pay $400 a month toward his wife’s medical bills and make his $417-a-month truck payment. The money taken from the lock box April 15 was found in a peanut jar in Henson’s bedroom, according to the complaint.

wartime experiences on what would otherwise be a day off. Lawyers from Lake County (including several who are veterans) serve as interviewers. Assistant State’s Attorney Ken LaRue, who recently returned from active duty in Afghanistan, said, “I do this because I have so much respect for the people who served before I did. I want to hear what they have to say and I want their memories to be preserved for the future.” Breakfast, which will include the military favorite chipped beef on toast, will be served to the soldiers. The guest of honor at the courthouse ceremony is Medal of Honor recipient Allen Lynch who will say a few words to the veterans prior to their interviews.

out of context. She would catch herself after a minute or her mother would help her find the right word. She apologized when this happened, but I reassured her that an apology was not necessary. The mother and daughter both received some benefits and the daughter received a small amount in child support. Even living very frugally, I could see they would have a hard time paying for anything extra like car repairs or ever saving enough for a handicap-accessible van. I asked if I could look around the house and both the mother and daughter gave me their approval. I looked in nearly empty cabinets and a refrigerator with condiments but not much real food. I noticed the laundry was overflowing in the hamper and the mother looked embarrassed. She told me the washing machine had been broken for over a week and the landlord had told them he would get to it when he could. This made me upset as I knew how hard it would be for them to get to a laundromat and it would be an added expense. The mother said she did not want to “rock the boat” because the landlord had already been understanding over late rent and had even given them a rent reduction in the past when the daughter had first moved in. After reviewing the rent, I could see they were

wonderful prayer together that reminded me that no matter where we are in life, no matter how hard our struggles, we should always have a thankful heart. Here was a family that had endured many tough times in their lives yet they were grateful for every day. They were grateful for the life they had. They were grateful for all of you and the blessings you provided for their family. We held hands as we said together, amen. The next few days were busy with getting the van mechanically ready and the washing machine was repaired. There also were a few household repairs I noticed that my handyman fixed for free. The utilities were brought up to date. Food was delivered. More prayers of thanksgiving were said for all of you making our continued mission of help possible. We promise to continue our good works, our mission of caring and sharing, removing the pains of poverty for as many as donations allow in our communities. Your support has been crucial in our success at changing lives forever. We are so grateful to call you not only donors, but friends in our mission The Time Is Now to Help. God bless all of you. Health and happiness, God bless everyone, W.C./Sal

paying a very reasonable rent and told the mother I would send my appliance repairman over to take a look. After a thorough review I showed the mother and daughter a picture of a handicap van we together had recently purchased. It was a smaller van and I had been waiting for the right person to give this van to. The daughter’s petite size and small chair would fit in this van perfectly. The mother looked at the van and said, “Oh my, that would be perfect.” When I told them both that we were going to give them the van, they began to cry. The mother hugged the daughter in her chair and they cried together. The mother said, “This will change our life so much. My daughter will be able to participate in so much more. She won’t have to stay home alone when we go places.” The daughter said, “And you won’t have to try to lift me all the time.” We went over the utilities and I promised them assistance with them as well. This lifted the heavy financial burden and stress from their shoulders. I was preparing to leave when the mother said, “We need to all pray a prayer of thanksgiving for The Time is Now to Help and the blessings they have brought to our family.” She called the grandchild in and I watched as she bowed her head in prayer. Dear W.C., I am writing you this letter with a heavy heart. I have never had to ask for help like this before. I have been through a lot of tragedy in my life that would have broken many. I always tried to count my blessings and thank God for all the good things in my life, even when they were few and far between. I grew up in a family where physical abuse was considered normal. I always felt too helpless to do anything to stop it. My mother and father were both physically and verbally abusive to me and my elderly grandparents. I watched how they were mistreated and would cry tears of shame over how they were humiliated because they could not walk fast enough or get to the bathroom in time. My grandparents even tried to stand up for me but I saw how it only made things worse for them. When they died, I vowed I would never treat any living creature like that when I grow up, and I am proud to say I have not. I cared for senior citizens as a CNA when I was a teenager. My parents made fun of my job. They did not physically abuse me any longer but the verbal abuse continued. I married as soon as I got out of high school just to get out of their home. I soon found myself with two children and working two jobs. My husband became abusive when he began to drink after the birth of our second child. I did not want that kind of lifestyle for my children or myself so I moved out and filed for a divorce. I managed to raise my two children without any help from him or anyone. My children are my whole world and we are very close. A year and a half ago my daughter was in a horrific car accident. She was a 25-year-old single mother with a child of her own at the time. She was in the hospital in a coma for two months followed by two more months of rehabilitation and physical therapy. We now all live together. I have cared for my grandchild and my daughter ever since this accident. My daughter will be in a wheelchair the rest of her life due to her spinal cord injury. She also has lapses in her memory and

Yoga with a twist Area studio offers aerial form of ancient exercise By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
When I first heard the term, “suspended aerial yoga,” an old song started running through my head: “He flies through the air with the greatest of ease, the daring young man on the flying trapeze.” There was no trapeze in sight, however, when I walked through the Yoga Studio 108 door at 11416 Fox River Road, Wilmot, Wis., and instructor Colleen Chuipek easily demonstrated and explained how to use the fabric hammocks suspended from the ceiling. We started on the floor, holding onto the hammocks with our hands, which are hip height for each participant. Leaning on and being suspended in the hammocks allows for a deeper stretch than does the mat on the floor. Aerial yoga is a new blend of yoga that combines traditional yoga with the use of silk hammocks that are suspended from the ceiling. The hammock assists and supports you and your body weight. The yoga hammock is used for yoga asanas (poses), movements, deeper stretches, tranquility, and deeper relaxation. As the class progressed, we moved up into the hammock, using it for support as we stretched and moved. Chuipek demonstrated and moved to aid anyone into position. By the end of class, I was even ready to turn upside down to try an inversion while suspended in the hammock. “Suspended aerial yoga has been popular on the east and west coasts for about four years,” Chuipek explained. “We do both hatha, which is the slow, quiet and meditative form and also the flowing form of vinyasa.” Chuipek was a certified horse massage therapist for 15 years. In 2006, she experi-
enced a life-changing event when she was diagnosed with a nerve disease that left her right arm partially paralyzed. “What the doctors did for me wasn’t helping,” she said. “The pain medication wasn’t helping. I had to find another way.” That way was hydro, or water, tai chi and yoga. From there she moved into yoga and became a certified instructor. Chuipek now has her own business and full use of that right arm. Yoga Studio 108 offers something for every age and body shape and size. There are classes for children, ages 5 and older. Chuipek said yoga is therapeutic for children with asthma, anxiety issues, ADHD and also children who face the challenge of autism. Children’s mat classes are $10 and aerial are $12. Each aerial class is an hour and 15 minutes, with 15 minutes after that for more relaxation or the chance to experiment either with new, challenging poses or new ones you might deSUBMITTED PHOTO Illinois Hi-Liter velop. There is also a visiting teacher from Himalaya Yoga Institute. Chuipek donates 10 percent of class fees to Safe Harbor Humane Society to help dogs in need of medical care. Fall Fest combines fun, history By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
The third annual Community Baptist Fall Fest Oct. 24 brought church members and people from Silver Lake, Wis., and surrounding communities together for food, fun and a little history. One feature of Fall Fest was Pastor Cliff Hathcock’s historical tour of the church. The Community Baptist Church had its beginning in a train car. “The country was growing during the late 1800s,” Pastor Cliff explained. “And towns sprang up and disappeared quickly. There were always taverns and sometimes the town would disappear before the church was built.” The American Baptists had a solution. They outfitted train cars as chapels and would be pulled behind different types of trains to everywhere in the American west. Railroad bosses saw the benefit to their workers to have chapel cars available and railroad companies would pull the chapel cars at no expense. The chapel car that impacted Silver Lake was called Glad Tidings. The missionaries were Reverend Charles and Bertha Rust. When Glad Tidings began its journey, the Rusts were newlyweds and they lived in a small apartment at the back of the chapel. They lived there for four years. After four years and two children, the Rusts

created a permanent home and Rust would travel back and forth while Mrs. Rust kept the home fires burning. A chapel car would stay in an area for a while and when the car and missionary left, a small group who had trusted Christ would take up where the missionary left off. When the Rev. Rust returned to Silver Lake in May of 1897 for second visit, work on a church began.
And that is the year that the Silver Lake Baptist Church received its charter. The first church in Silver Lake was called Silver Lake Baptist and the original building sat on the site of the current parsonage, located on 4th Street not far from the current building. The name was later changed to Community Baptist and the new building was built in the 1950s.

Bank seeks court delay in dispute over subdivision
Crowds of costumed kids and their parents fill Main Street during the annual Treat the Streets in the downtown business district of Antioch Oct. 25. The three-hour event is sponsored by the village and the Antioch business community and was held under ideal weather conditions. It gives children the opportunity to play games, collect candy, and show off their costumes in celebration of Halloween. Below: Ellie Rank, 4, and her mother, Amber check out the bagful of goodies they have collected so far during the annual Treat the Streets.
Johnsburg wants jury to hear complaint over Whispering Ridge
JUDE KAIDER Illinois Hi-Liter
Treat the Streets
Attorneys for the State Bank filed a motion to continue a court hearing regarding a complaint over public improvements in Whispering Ridge Subdivision, according to Village of Johnsburg officials. The village filed a complaint against State Bank in July because it contends the bank failed to complete remaining public improvements in the subdivision. A continuance would allow State Bank more time to defend itself against the complaint. According to the village, State Bank’s attorney and chairman, Jack Franks, has maintained the bank is not obligated to provide infrastructure improvements in the development because it did not have a “profit motive” when it took over ownership of the development. That position has been met with shock and disappointment by the Village Board.
“The village has a long-term history of doing business with the State Bank and we are shocked with their decision not to honor their obligations in this matter,” said Village President Ed Hettermann. The village filed suit in an effort to bring the matter before a jury. “It appears that the State Bank is going to seek every opportunity to delay this matter and burden the taxpayers of Johnsburg with additional legal costs,” Hettermann contends. The village board’s decision to take legal action was unanimous and came after several attempts by the village to resolve the matter. “The Village Board and I have an obligation to protect the interests of our residents and we would be derelict in our duties if after not being able to amicably resolve this matter, we did not continue with legal action against the bank,” Hettermann said.

Mercy to merge with Rockford Health System By Samantha Fetzner
ly offers facilities in both Woodstock and Harvard, will operate uninterrupted during the transition. The merger will occur without any monetary exchange between the two companies, either. Operations between Rockford and Mercy Health system serve an estimated 750,000 plus people between Illinois and Wisconsin patients. Anticipated net revenue as a result of the merger exceeds $1 billion. The goal put forth by both CEOs in the acquisition of Mercy into the Rockford system is to create more efficiency in operations. The Harvard Mercy loca-
tion includes 65 beds and is equipped for in-patient services. The Woodstock location focuses on urgent care and outpatient procedures. The final step before proceeding with the merger is for the Illinois Health Services and Review Board to approve the request. The plans to merge have also been attributed to the changing health care requirements due to the Affordable Care Act. Other companies have successfully merged in larger markets. Bea, current Mercy CEO, will remain in the position following the merger. Plans for a board are currently outlined in a structure consist-
After initially rejecting $585,000 in grant money from the Illinois Department of Health, the McHenry County Board changed course Oct. 29 and voted to accept the money. The first vote on the matter the week prior resulted 10-10 tie. The accepting vote was 21-3 in support of the grant through the federal Affordable Care Act. Acceptance of the grant funding will help provide insurance coverage for those McHenry County residents who may be struggling due to homelessness, job loss. It also assists veterans in need. Grant funding was provided last year as well. When the initial decision rejecting the grant became public, people took to mes-
sage boards, social media, newspaper websites and other mass media outlets to express their displeasure with the rejection. As a result, the board decided to reconsider its position. Board members spent more than two hours discussing whether or not they felt their first vote was based on personal political beliefs surrounding the controversial federal health care laws. Members who chose to switch their vote cited additional information, or more detailed information regarding the program’s one-on-one counselor and caseworker focus as a primary reason. Statistics for 2013 show the county helped more than 3,000 residents enroll in the Medicaid program and/or through the online health care marketplace. The counselors
held nearly 13,000 sessions to help people navigate through the system. Funding will provide salaries or wages for some of those counselors employed in social services with a focus in healthcare navigation for several months. This particular grant is expected to run dry by mid April 2015 according to board officials. Many area health care representatives from a variety of facilities spoke in favor of the grant before the second vote in hopes they would be able to get the board to reconsider. With the funding, McHenry County Health Department will team up with three separate entities to help those in need. All Centegra locations, Pioneer Center in McHenry, and the Family Health Partnership are the providers affiliated with the grant services.
The McHenry County College Student Nursing Organization is hosting a Blood Drive and noninvasive bone marrow registration event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the College, 8900 U.S. Highway 14 in Crystal Lake. The MCC Student Nursing Organization is coordinating the event with Heartland Blood Center and Deletebloodcancer. org. “This is a great time of need for donations,” noted Student Nursing Organization co-president Heather McLaughlin of Wonder Lake. “Donations are down in general, so the Student Nursing Organization felt this would be a good event to host and help raise awareness in the community. A little time out of your day to register and donate a pint of blood could help save a life.” McLaughlin said everyone who donates at the MCC blood
drive will receive a coupon for a free meal at Jersey Mike’s Subs, plus one donor will win a $50 catering coupon from Jersey Mike’s. Donors are urged to register for the blood drive ahead of time online at www.heartlandbc.org. Walk-ins are also welcome. Participants must have a photo ID to donate, and donors should also drink plenty of fluids and have a good meal before donating blood. McLaughlin said students and community members are also urged to register for the bone marrow database before, during or after the blood drive. The registration process is quick and noninvasive, involving a form to fill out and a cheek swab. McLaughlin said part of the organization’s incentive for hosting the bone marrow registry is the college’s firefighter/ EMT program and the fact that
many first responders from 9-11 are now being diagnosed with blood cancers as a result of chemical exposure during rescue efforts. Those who wish to register for the bone marrow database but can’t make the registration event on Nov. 12 may go to deletebloodcancer.org. To be eligible to register for the bone marrow registry, a person must be: • Between the ages of 18 and 55; • In general good health; • Willing to donate to any patient; • Not already registered; • Living permanently in the U.S.; • At least 4 feet, 10 inches and 110 pounds. For more information about the blood or bone marrow registration drive, contact the MCC Student Life Office at (815) 455-8550.

Mercy Health System will merge with neighboring Rockford Health System, join forces under a new name in early 2015. Bringing the two existing systems together will give the network more than 7,500 employees at over 80 outpatient clinics as well as five full-fledged hospitals between Winnebago and McHenry counties. The CEO of Mercy Health System, Javon Bea, made the decision public on Oct 28 following board votes approving the merger earlier in the month. Mercy, which present-
ing of nine members, Bea included, with four from each respective existing system. Once united, the new health system anticipates pursuing the possibility of
a facility in Crystal Lake, which was most recently rejected under Mercy’s name in July of this year. The existing network offers 550 physicians. Add-
ing a facility would create additional jobs and expand health care services in the area, which has been a goal of Mercy’s for several years.

Autumn Drive at the museum
McHenry County Historical Society President Bob Frenz (left) staffs the society’s museum during the 27th annual Autumn Drive Oct. 17 to 19. The museum in Perkins Hall – the former Seneca Township Hall near Woodstock – hosted several vendors and offered several items for sale during the event.
