Lighting up the season
Pair had run away from juvenile treatment facility in Kenosha County Two juveniles are facing charges in two states after allegedly running away from the Benet Lake (Wis.) Residential Treatment Facility and burglarizing and setting fire to a home in Antioch last week. “This series of foolish and reckless acts had the potential to escalate quickly into a tragedy, Antioch Police Chief Craig Somerville said. “Thankfully no one was at home at the residence during the fire. According to Antioch police: On Nov. 23, at approximately 7:30 a.m., Antioch police officers began taking several burglary to motor vehicle reports in the Oakwood Knolls subdivision. At 12:20 p.m., officers were requested to assist the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department to check the jurisdiction for two juveniles who had run away from the Benet Lake facility in Kenosha County. The juveniles had already allegedly committed several car burglaries at the Benet Lake facility, which was seen on surveillance cameras. Officers began canvassing the area for the juveniles and, at 3:30 p.m., were advised the two juveniles were back at Benet Lake threatening staff members there. As Antioch officers responded to assist the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office at the facility, officials discovered the juveniles had burglarized and set fire to a residence at 340 Abbey Court. Officers and Antioch Fire Department personnel responded to the structure fire.
Officials contacted the homeowner and after completing the arson and burglary investigations, the residence, which suffered extensive damage, was boarded up for security. The two juvenile offenders allegedly had items from the residential and car burglaries in their possession when they were arrested by the Kenosha sheriff’s deputies. Antioch detectives spoke with both juveniles who allegedly admitted to the arson and burglary at the Abbey Court residence, as well as the car burglaries in Oakwood Knolls. Both juveniles were taken into custody by the Kenosha authorities and have been charged with offenses they committed at Benet Lake. The juveniles will also be referred to the Depke Juvenile Intake Facility in Vernon Hills upon completion of the investigation for the following charges: arson – Class 1 felony; residential burglary – Class 1 felony; burglary to motor vehicles – Class 2 felony. “Due to the quick response of Antioch police and fire personnel, additional losses were minimized and arrests were made, Somerville said. “The Antioch Police Department is working closely with the Benet Lake administration to avoid similar incidents in the future and enhance communication between the police, the Benet Lake staff and village residents. My first and foremost concern is the safety of the residents of Antioch.

Above: Ruth Mackenzie, 12, is the first to make it to Santa’s lap this year at the opening of Santa’s Enchanted Village located next to the Village Hall, 882 Main St., Antioch, on Nov. 28. Santa had just completed his starring role in the village’s 39th annual Christmas parade. The Enchanted Village will be open daily Mondays through Fridays 5:30 to 8 p.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends through Dec. 23. Right: The Supalo family, mother Erin, father Michael, and twin brothers Graham and Miller, 2 1/2, throw the switch lighting Antioch’s Christmas tree for the 2014 holiday season in front of the Village Hall Nov. 28. The Supalos achieved the distinction by winning the first Village of Antioch Christmas Ornament Decorating Contest sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. The winning ornament now hangs on the tree. The event followed the 39th annual Christmas parade, which featured the arrival of Santa Claus.

There are two types of people in the world: Those who take refuge indoors during the winter and those who embrace every snowflake that falls. For those who fall in the latter category, the Southeastern Wisconsin area offers a plethora of activities that make the most of Wisconsin’s winter. So dust off and wax up those skis – then cast your eyes skyward. Snow should be falling again soon. Here’s a listing of the resorts, ski hills and cross country skiing trails in the area:

Vets invited to open house Veterans, their friends and families, as well as the general public are invited to an open house hosted by the Lake-McHenry Veterans and Family Services program on Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 3 to 7 p.m. The free event will take place at the program’s new location, 100 S. Atkinson Road, Suite 203 in Grayslake. Managed by the Lake County Health Department, the program was formerly at Grand Avenue in Lake Villa. The program’s staff encourages veterans to attend the open house, where they can learn about numerous services and resources available on a local level. For instance, vets and service members can gather for free coffee and conversation on a weekly basis through the “Vets and a Cup of Joe” series. The program also of-
fers free screenings, support groups, crisis intervention, linkage to services such as emergency housing and family and group therapy. Funded through the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, the program is consumer guided with peerto-peer counselors, case managers and therapists serving veterans, active duty military personnel and their families. Approximately 40,000 veterans reside in Lake County, and of those veterans, 20 to 25 percent struggle with mental health issues. Veterans are often reluctant to seek help on issues ranging from job and benefit issues to emotional stress caused by deployment, reintegration and family issues. A rumor that Trustee Pierce asked for a shoo-in reelection to be left in his Christmas stocking was later denied by Santa’s elves.

Twin Lakes set to welcome Christmas Trees on Parade event tops long list of holiday activities

items, but all locales will have an item of some sort, Trongeau said. “Everybody is being creative, like at the country club, they have to pick out a picture of Tiger Woods and what he’s doing, and then if they find that, they get a certificate,” Trongeau said. Items may range from simple items like bottle caps or business cards to tote bags or menus, Trongeau said. “We are telling businesses to give out something so people know what your business is and what you do. It’s an opportunity for chamber members to promote themselves,” Trongeau said.
Trees on Parade will be held at St. John’s Community Center, 701 N. Lake Ave. in Twin Lakes on Friday, Dec. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. 5 p.m. New this year is a scavenger hunt, which will involve people visiting area businesses in a quest to win a new 19-inch LED TV/ DVD. The scavenger hunt begins on Monday. The village’s festivities will culminate with a tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 6. “It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Marilyn Trongeau, executive director of the Twin Lakes Area Chamber and Business Associa- Trees on Parade tion. The vendors can’t wait to come back every year,” Trongeau said. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase. New this year will be a decorated gingerbread house contest, featuring houses decorated by culinary students at Wilmot Union High School. Attendees can vote on their favorite gingerbread houses. In addition, the Kids Korner, sponsored by Mad Dan’s Restaurant, will offer face painting and crafts for children. The Gingerbread House Coloring Contest, sponsored by BMO Harris Bank, Twin Lakes, features forms that were distributed to children at local schools and day care centers. Winners of that contest will be announced at Trees on Parade. Santa will be in Santa’s Corner on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. before a fire truck brings him to the chamber for the village’s tree lighting ceremony. Tree lighting The Village Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held by the chamber building on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Santa Claus and Village President Howard Skinner will light the village’s Christmas tree. In addition, Boy Scouts will be selling cookies and hot chocolate, while local businesses will be open to offer Christmas treats. Characters will be on hand for
photo opportunities, and holiday music will be played. Barrels will be set up at the chamber for people to donate warm gloves for the Sharing Cen-
ter and food items for the Twin Lakes Food Pantry. “Please be generous. It’s a great way to start off the holiday season,” Trongeau said.

For instance, vets and service members can gather for free coffee and conversation on a weekly basis through the “Vets and a Cup of Joe series.

The program also offers free screenings, support groups, crisis intervention, linkage to services such as emergency housing and family and group therapy. Teens arrested for burglary, arson Pair had run away from juvenile treatment facility
Two juveniles are facing charges in two states after allegedly running away from the Benet Lake (Wis.) Residential Treatment Facility and burglarizing and setting fire to a home in Antioch last week. “This series of foolish and reckless acts had the potential to escalate quickly into a tragedy,” Antioch Police Chief Craig Somerville said. “Thankfully no one was at home at the residence during the fire.” According to Antioch police: On Nov. Officers and Antioch Fire Department personnel
responded to the structure fire. “Due to the quick response of Antioch police and fire personnel, additional losses were minimized and arrests were made,” Somerville said. “The Antioch Police Department is working closely with the Benet Lake administration to avoid similar incidents in the future and enhance communication between the police, the Benet Lake staff and village residents. My first and foremost concern is the safety of the residents of Antioch.”
William Strauss, senior economist from Federal Reserve Chicago is the keynote speaker for the Lake County Chamber of Commerce’s Forecast Lake County Luncheon on Jan. 6. The forecast provides attendees with an analysis of the issues, challenges and opportunities in 2015. overdose on heroin, opiates McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies on Nov. 26 began carrying Naloxone, a counteractive drug that has been shown to save the lives of people who have overdosed on heroin and other opiate drugs. Deputies were trained over the past few months to carry Naloxone and respond to emergencies involving opioid/heroin overdoses, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office. Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, is a non-addictive medication that can reverse potentially fatal opioid overdose. The prescription medication reverses an overdose by blocking opioid receptors in the brain for 30 to 90 minutes. The Sheriff’s Office joins other law enforcement in the county and state with carrying this new life-saving response tool. According to officials, drug overdose is recognized as a significant problem in Illinois and legislation makes it legal in the state for nonmedical persons to administer Naloxone/Narcan in order to prevent an overdose from becoming fatal. The law allows the Illinois de-
partment of Human Services, and Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse to establish and authorize programs to distribute Naloxone/Narcan. Funding for the Sheriff’s Office Naloxone program came from the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Seizure Fund. This program is made possible by the partnership with the Mathers Clinic. This program is a direct result of the efforts made by members of the McHenry County HEAT taskforce. “We would like to thank the members of the board, as well as the entire community for their input and support, Undersheriff Andrew Zinke said. “We are now better prepared to help save the victims in our county. Residents can also be trained in the administration of Naloxone through the local organization, Wake the Nation. If you know someone who may need assistance with addiction, McHenry County has resources and assistance through organizations such as the Mathers Clinic, Rosecrance, or by calling 211.
