GOOD Trainers, owners, build canine bonds with nose work By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

aura Yurchak doesn’t remember a time without cats – or dogs – in her life. “We always had cats and dogs while I was growing up, they were all wonderful.” As often happens, there is one dog that stands out, just a little bit, from all the rest. For Laura, that would be Bear. “We found this little puppy under a car on July 3 one year,” Laura said. “It was about eight weeks old and all alone. So we took the puppy home. “He looked like a little bear, so that’s what we called him.” Later, she heard about a litter of puppies that had been born about that time near the place where Bear was found. None of the puppies lived,

except for Bear. “He was my doggie soul mate and he was with me through some drastic ups and downs in my early adult life. I was devastated when he died in 1993,” Laura said. Laura and her husband, George, were sold on dogs. “We started looking at the Humane Society for another dog. We brought two home, a cattle dog mix and a border collie, Harley and Lucy.” One is male and the other female. Laura commented that problems at home could start when there are two female dogs together. George and Laura took the dogs to training and fell in love with the activities. Laura researched what it took to become certified and then started traveling to the workshops and seminars. And what began as a love for a wonderful animal companion has turned into

a business of Loving Paws LLC – positive reinforcement dog training in Kenosha. But it’s more than a business. It’s a lifestyle. In addition to the training classes, the Yurchaks work with their dogs – Laura with Harley and George with Lucy. “I started out with basic manners and good canine citizen classes,” she said. “Then I heard about canine nose work.” And things skyrocketed from there. Canine nose work is something any dog and dog owner can do. Dogs are trained to recognize scents and find the hidden sources. It’s a great activity for highenergy dogs that need a job and it works for older dogs that have lost some mobility and agility. “It saved us this winter

Sharolynn Roche watches as her dog, Rain, searches a warehouse during a “nose work” exercise. During the six-week K9 Nose Work, the dog and handler become more confident in the hunting game and learn to focus, making for a more effective search. As time goes on the dog learns what scents to disregard and what scent to focus on.

No ATV routes in Salem after referendum fails

Bong to host outdoor programs The following outdoor activities are scheduled for the Richard Bong State Recreational Center, Kansasville: • Saturday, Dec. 6: Holiday Greenery. Put some “green” in your holidays as you learn to create beautiful evergreen sprays or swags using natural materials. All materials provided. Pre-register by calling (262) 8785601. Fee is $15. Meet at the Visitor Center but be prepared to drive. 8:30 to 10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. to noon. • Saturday, Dec. 13: Animal Detectives.

Town Board declines to take action after voters oppose measure By Gail Peckler-Dziki

Hike in search of animal tracks and other clues to uncover the secret lives of animals at the park and in your yard. Meet at the Visitor Center. 10 to 11 a.m. • Sunday, Dec. 21: Celebrate the Solstice. Enjoy a natural celebration at this busy time of year. Learn how others have celebrated the return of the sun then hike and do some of your own celebrating. Dress to be outside. Meet at the Amphitheater. 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, call (262) 878-5600.

CORRESPONDENT

The Salem Town Board took no action on the three ATV routes proposed by some town residents at the regular Nov. 10 board meeting. The measure appeared as a non-binding referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot and read, “Shall the Salem Town Board adopt an ordinance which would authorize the operation of all terrain vehicles on certain Town roads designated as ATV routes?” The measure failed in a vote of 2,352 no to 1,835 yes during the Nov. 4 election. The three proposed trial ATV routes would have allowed lake access to residents in three neighborhoods. They are Val-Mar, Timberline and Salem Oaks/ Montgomery Lake. The

last route would have given neighborhood residents access to both Hooker and Montgomery Lakes along town roads. During the citizen comments portion of the meeting, proponents of the measure once again pled their case, stating that the number in favor was not a small number. Opponents pointed out that the margin was large. Opponents of the measure Jerry Leslie and Crystal Koz both stated that the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says its illegal to run ATV machines on roads. According to state ATV advocates there are currently between 6,000 and 10,000 miles of ATV routes/trails in Wisconsin. Trails are considered offroad while the routes are on the regular roads. The miles

voted in favor of the limited trial run, riding ATVs on those roads would have been legal. The discussion started to become heated and people wanted to rebut. However, Town Chairwoman Diann Tesar said that while she wanted to let people speak, there would be no back and forth. When the meeting reached the agenda item for discussion and possible action on the ATV proposal, Tesar said that the board had discussed this at the Committee of the Whole meeting the previous week and had decided to honor the non-binding referendum and take no action regarding it. In a later interview, proponent Arlene Langel said there was no plan to pursue the idea further at this time.

Proponent Karen Fakes said, “I don’t want to beat a dead horse, but the was a lot of misinformation put out. We are only asking for certain roads that will be posted with the proper signage and speed limits.” “We just came back from Darlington (Wis.),” she continued. “They have many ATV routes (on regular roads). There weren’t many accidents and the speed limits were enforced and people rode them responsibly.” Salem resident Kate Johnson commented, “Right now, riding ATV’s on town roads is illegal. You had plenty of time to get out the information you wanted.” If the Town Board had

Veterans Day a ‘teachable moment’ Area schools find special meaning in observances By Anne Trautner

Veterans Day celebrations are meaningful for veterans themselves. Tilsner said she learned that years ago when she started organizing Veterans Day assemblies. A veteran herself, Tilsner has taken on the organizer role for schools she taught at in Texas, Illinois and Wisconsin. At her first assembly, the oldest living veteran in the county where Tilsner worked attended the ceremony. “When his name was announced, he stood up and literally shuffled across the stage to the podium. It took him a good 10 minutes, and you could have heard a pin drop as he was making his way across the stage. I was so nervous about what he was doing because he was not supposed to be coming over to the microphone,” Tilsner said. When the veteran finally got to the microphone he said, “I am so honored to be here.” Then he turned around and walked back to his chair. “When an anthem is played, to see someone struggling to stand up because that is important to them, or to A meaningful experience see a veteran who gets a little In addition to being a pow- teary-eyed at that, or maybe to erful learning experience, the see a veteran that is missing a STAFF WRITER

Students at schools across the area participated in Veterans Day activities last week. “It’s a teachable moment for teachers to help students to understand that these people gave us our freedom. These people fought and left their families to do that. It helps kids show gratitude, which is a neat thing. It is one of my favorite assemblies because it is so meaningful,” said Karen Reddin, gifted and talented coordinator at Randall School in Western Kenosha County. Not all students across the country had that opportunity. “When I taught in Illinois, they had off from school, and there was a lot of debate about whether should they be out of school or in school. I think that being in school and going to the assembly is something that makes it relevant, because if they were out of school, they would just be enjoying themselves and not thinking about what Veterans Day is all about,” said Marlene Tilsner, a social studies teacher at Wilmot High School.

Students also are affected by seeing people they didn’t realize were in the service, she said. “I know that there are some people who are on our staff that students don’t realize were military at one point in time,” said Tilsner, who served eight years in the National Guard. On Veterans Day, when Wilmot’s school day begins at 7:45 a.m., veterans came in for breakfast and fellowship. An assembly followed the meal with about 100 veterans attending and being acknowledged. Tilsner said the veterans’ interaction with students brings the meaning of the observance to heart. “I’m hoping that maybe if we get more conversations going, then the impact will be even deeper,” Tilsner said. “When I see some of these veterans, I think of what a wealth of information they are for these students.” Helping the Honor Flight Students at Randall Consolidated School have made

She realized her passion for working with dogs and began to train. She began instructing in 2010. • Melissa Mlandinic first came to Loving Paws as a client in early 2010 with her Vizsla, Hazel. She became hooked on nose work and is enthusiastic about introducing the activity to others and is the volunteer coordinator for the K9 Nose Work trials. • Jennifer Lueck became involved with Loving Paws in early 2004 when her dog, Casey, was a puppy. After Casey graduated from her classes, Jennifer began auditing classes to learn to become a trainer herself and has been teaching classes since 2006. Jennifer is trained in both human and pet first aid and currently teaches Canine Freestyle, Tricks and Frisbee. Randall will held its ninth annual Veterans Day assembly last week. “This day is truly a special one for us all at Randall. It is not often enough that we get an opportunity to truly thank and show our appreciation to the veterans and current military personnel who have fought for and preserved our freedoms,” Reddin said. When the veterans came to Randall to be honored on Tuesday, they each received handmade bookmarks crafted by students. The bookmarks feature poppies, adopted as a national symbol of remembrance. “They actually use their fingerprint to make the poppies, so it kind of puts their personal touch on it,” Reddin said. Help throughout the year Students in the Salem School District have been collecting household items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, paper towel, shower curtain liners and soap since Oct. 13 to help homeless veterans. “I’m pretty excited about it. I think this is a nice way for kids to really do something actively through their donations and make that connection between why are we giving these things to veterans,” said Kim Hildreth, school counselor at Salem. Salem School partnered with the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative to help veterans who are homeless. On any given night one of every four homeless people is a veteran, Hildreth said. Kirsten Sobieski, executive director of the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative, was scheduled to speak at the school’s Veterans Days. Students have been watching videos in the classroom and have been learning about veterans and the problems they face when they return home. All the students have written notes thanking veterans for their service. Sobieski will bring the notes and household items back to veterans whom the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative serves. “It’s pretty simple in the whole scheme of things,” Hildreth said. “A lot of it is about recognizing the day and helping our kids to acknowledge the sacrifices that people make for us on a daily basis.”

Kenosha County sheriff warns people on scams By Anne Trautner STAFF WRITER

In recent weeks, phone scammers have called area residents, claiming that the people owe money to the IRS and requesting payment over the phone. “No one ever calls you and insists you owe them money. That is a scam right away” Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said. “If you ever have a doubt, call your local agency to have them look into it.” Anyone who does owe money to the IRS would be notified through the mail, Beth said. Last week, Eleanor Pollack of Salem received a phone call in which the caller said that the IRS had filed a lawsuit against her. Then the scammer gave her a Union Grove number to call, Pollack said.

Instead, Pollack called the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office and reported the call. “People need to be warned that this is happening,” Pollack said. Several weeks ago, a Twin Lakes resident received a call from a scammer claiming to be from the IRS. The scammer said that the resident was behind in taxes, and if those taxes were not paid immediately, the sheriff’s department would be calling that individual. After hanging up the phone, the resident received a follow-up call from someone who claimed to be the chief deputy from the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, saying that the department was in the process of putting a warrant out for that individual’s arrest if a payment was not made immedi-

ately. The sheriff’s department would never make such a phone call, Beth said. “If we put a warrant for you, we don’t call you,” Beth said. The scammer used Chief Deputy Charles Smith’s name, and the caller I.D. showed that the call was coming from the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department. Fortunately, the Twin Lakes resident did not pay any money over the phone. Instead, the individual called the Sheriff’s Department, reported the call and learned that it was a scam. “So the person was smart. They did do the research and found out it was a scam,” Beth said. Telephone scammers now have the capability to manipulate phone numbers, so that

caller I.D. will show an incorrect number, Beth said. In addition, telephone scammers are able to alter their voices. “I could call you and make it look like it’s coming from your home phone number, and I can also change the voice, and make it sound like I’m a 13 year old girl, or an Indian person, or whatever. It is actually very amazing what people who are really crafty at this can do,” Beth said. “It is scary.” In Lake County, Illinois, scammers claiming to be from the IRS or the U.S. Treasury tell victims they owe money to the government and that it must be paid immediately through a credit card, pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. Those who refuse are told they will be arrested, deported or

have their business license or driver’s license suspended. The IRS and U.S. Treasury will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone or wire-transfers, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Another scam that is on the rise in Lake County is one in which the scammer says he is calling from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division. The scammer tells victims they missed jury duty and in order to avoid being arrested for Contempt of Court, they must purchase gift cards worth several hundred dollars, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported. In reality, neither the Lake County Sheriff’s Office nor the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department accepts gift cards as a form of payment for bond or

any other fine. In another scam that is going on across the nation, the scammer appears to be friendly and refers to the victims by first name and asks about their families. Then the scammer tells the victims they are a grandchild or relative stranded in jail or another country. The scammer then asks for money to be wired to an account for bond or airfare. Anyone who receives a call like this should write down the phone number and tell the caller they will call back. Then the person should call the local police agency to verify if the call is a scam. Anyone receiving a call from a telephone scammer in Kenosha County should call the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department at (262) 6055100.

Army Staff Sgt. James L. Van Bendegom, 19, of Kenosha, was buried Nov. 11, in Kenosha – some 37 years after he was presumed dead in Vietnam. The funeral, with full military honors, was held on Veterans Day. On July 12, 1967, Van Bendegom was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, as a member of a patrol that was overrun by enemy forces in South Vietnam, near the Cambodian border. During this attack, Van Bendegom was captured by enemy forces and returning POWs later reported that he died from wounds suffered during the attack. On March 14, 1986, a Vietnamese national in a refugee camp in Thailand, turned over to U.S. custody, remains of what were purported to be an American service member. Information provided by the Vietnamese national did not correlate with any unac-

counted for service members. In mid 2000, due to the advances in technology, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command re-examined the remains and determined that there was a possibility for identification. In the identification of Van Bendegom, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory used circumstantial evidence and forensic identification tools, including two forms of DNA analysis; mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome Short Tandem Report DNA, which matched his brothers. Today there are 1,639 American service members that are still unaccounted for from the Vietnam War. For additional information on the Defense Department’s mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO website at www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.

Skateboarder injured in hit-and-run

A 16-year-old boy on a skateboard required medical airlift after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Beach Park, Ill., Nov. 8, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The suspected

driver was arrested a day later and is facing multiple criminal charges. The incident was reported at 7:20 p.m. Preliminary investigation shows that Conner L. Vixon, 16, of Beach Park was skateboard-

ing on Sheridan Road near Chaney Road when he was struck by a northbound vehicle that did not stop and fled the scene northbound on Sheridan Road, according to the sheriff’s office. Witnesses described the vehicle as possibly a red Chevrolet SUV. Vixon was flown by Flight for Life to Advocate Luther

General Hospital in Park Ridge for treatment of his injuries. His condition was not known at the time of his evacuation, however, investigators were later advised that his injuries were not life threatening. Evidence was collected at the scene and the investigation continued through the sheriff’s Technical Crash In-

vestigations Unit. On Nov. 9, investigators received an anonymous tip concerning the location of the vehicle and driver that struck Vixon. Investigators and deputies located the vehicle in the 10000 block of Beach Road in Beach Park. The driver of a red 2008 Kia Sedona was subsequently identified as Epifanio Moya,

28, of the 1200 block of 34th Street in Zion. Moya turned himself in to investigators for interview. Moya was subsequently charged with the following: leaving the scene of an injury accident (Class 4 felony), failing to report an injury accident (Class 4 felony), driving while license suspended (Class A misdemeanor).

Love Inc. Program Director Ben Mitchell shows off the free Thanksgiving dinners that have been packaged for the organization’s holiday program. Love Inc. helps families in need by offering the Thanksgiving dinner and also an“Adopt A Family” Christmas program for those who meet the financial and residence guidelines.

here is little – if any – time a food pantry is not in need. For the Love Inc. organization, based in Burlington, Wis., the story is no different. Thanks to the generosity of various organizations running drives throughout the year, the shelves are never empty, though – especially not during the holidays. “It’s a stressful time, but it’s a happy time,” said Love Inc. Executive Director Bill Schoessling. The organization has two major holiday drives going right now. The first provides a Thanksgiving meal to anyone who qualifies for the food pantry, and the second is the “Adopt-a-Family” Christmas program. Schoessling and Program Director Ben Mitchell have been busy in the last week, organizing the boxes that will become Thanksgiving dinners for more than 500 families. While about 500 people routinely qualify and use the food pantry, the holidays always draw extra people who just can’t afford the added food at the holiday table. Love Inc. is prepared to hand out as many as 600 Thanksgiving dinner boxes, valued at $29 each. “We’re still doing signups, and we’ll keep doing signups right until, I suppose,” Mitchell said. While all the food is purchased for the Thanksgiving dinner boxes

– and about 500 are packed and just waiting for the final items like potatoes and onions – Schoessling pointed out the costs have yet to be covered. “We have to pay for it,” Schoessling said. That’s where sponsorship comes in. The $29 price tag covers a $15 voucher for ham or turkey, creamed corn, green beans, cream of mushroom soup, stuffing, potatoes, onions, a pie, cool whip and gravy. An added treat this year is Ghirardelli hot chocolate, donated to the organization separately. Anyone who receives assistance must meet poverty and residency guidelines. And while the need is down slightly, Schoessling pointed to the fact that elderly people on fixed incomes are making more use of the Thanksgiving dinner. “We’re getting an older group signing up,” Schoessling said. “They just can’t make it with the higher food prices.” The Burlington Rotary will do a drive next week for funds, with any member who sponsors a meal getting matching funds. But Schoessling is still looking for donations. The boxes will start going out to qualified families on Monday, Nov. 17, at 9 a.m. “Every 10 minutes, we have three pickups scheduled, from 9 until 4,” Mitchell said. “And a few other people squeezed in here and there.”

Mom needs job, housing after father leaves Dear W.C., My husband left unexpectedly a few months ago. He moved out of the country so he does not have to pay child support. I have been raising our boys on my own ever since. I have only been working parttime since my oldest son was born 6 years ago. I have been looking for fulltime work. We keep falling further and further behind. My landlord is threatening to evict us, and my utilities are overdue. Can you please help us get back on our feet after such a tough last few months? Dear readers, I called the mother who wrote the letter to set up a time to visit. We agreed

to meet in a public place where she would feel more comfortable. I met the mother and two children at a local coffee shop. I offered to buy her and the boys a special drink and snack. The mother declined at first but, when I insisted, they all picked something out. The boys’ faces went from sad to happy as they looked into the bakery case full of goodies. The mother said, “They know we can’t afford

treats like this. This is definitely a special day for them. They haven’t had a lot to be happy about lately.” Once the boys were happily settled with their chocolate milk, cupcakes and a coloring book, the mother and I were able to talk. The mother said, “I don’t talk about a certain man in front of the boys if you know who I’m talking about. They don’t understand where he went and are finally stopping asking me about him five times a day. I don’t know how a man could do that to their own kids.” I agreed with her completely and told her I would not mention any names in front of the boys. Since we had no other

options, we talked the best we could with the children present. I don’t usually like to do this, as it can be very distressing for children to listen in on the stressful events that affect adults and financial problems. The mother said, “They had been on their own for nearly three months now.” The checking account was pretty much emptied when the father left. He took the only good car and left behind his old truck that had over 200,000 miles on it. The few belongings that were worth anything, he had taken with him. The mother said, “I guess that man needed to start a new life somewhere else. I didn’t even see it coming.” Just to remind us they were

listening in, the youngest son said, “What didn’t you see Mommy?” The mother looked at me fighting to keep tears in her eyes as she patted her son’s head saying, “Oh nothing’ my baby boy. Your mommy is seeing just fine now.” Her son said, “I’m not a baby anymore, Mommy. I’m a big boy.” We both smiled and knew we had to be careful with what was said around the little ears. As I had asked the mother to bring her budget and bills, we went over these. The rent was two months overdue but the landlady was being as patient as she could. The landlady had a smaller rental they were willing to let them move into and they had said

• Time is now Is Now to Help would be giving her assistance. I agreed to give her a call. I stepped outside so I could speak freely without the young boys listening in. I told the landlady we were indeed helping the mother and children. She was so relieved and said she wanted to help them as much as she could but she relied on her rental income to get by. I told her we would bring her past due rent up to date and pay the first month’s rent on the smaller rental. When I mentioned to the landlady that the mother was still looking for full-time work she said she possibly had a job. She was looking for someone who could do cleaning and yard work on some of her rentals. The landlady said it could be a full-time job and she could even bring her boys with her if needed. I promised the landlady I would speak to the mother and let her know she would be moving to the smaller rental. I also thanked the landlady for her help with this mother and children. The landlady said, “God bless The Time Is Now to Help for all you do for our community.” I went back in the coffee shop and told the mother about the conversation I had with her landlady. I asked if she would be interested

HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, NOV. 19, 2014 • 13 (Continued from page 12)

in the cleaning and maintenance job the landlady had offered. I told her she would even be able to bring the boys when they were out of school. The mother looked shocked and sat thinking for a few minutes. I told her the pay and a few more details. When she looked at me again, tears were running down her cheeks. The mother asked, “This all just happened while you were talking on the phone? This job will be an answer to my prayers. That is the best news I’ve heard in a few months.” One of her sons asked, “What news, Mommy?” The mother clapped her hands as she said, “We are moving to a new home and Mommy just got a job!” With that, both boys hugged their mother and shouted, “Yay, Mommy!” The mother laughed as several onlookers smiled at the happy sight. I went over the rest of her budget, making some suggestions. The mother wrote detailed notes of what she would need to do in the coming weeks to get her finances in order. She would be making a visit to her bank to change her accounts, call her insurance agent to remove her husband from her automobile policy, and she was going to sell some of her furniture so they could

fit in her smaller rental. We also did some minor repairs on the truck to make it safe enough until we received a donated vehicle to replace it with. Two weeks later, I paid a visit to the mother and children at their new rental. It was indeed small but much easier for the mother to keep up with. The mother said, “We really like it here. We are walking distance to everything, even a few of the rentals I am doing maintenance on. After years of having a husband that never did much around the house, I am an expert at doing all the maintenance on a house anyway. This was perfect for me. The boys can play in the empty rentals or in the yards while I work.” I asked how the boys were doing and the mother said, “Each day is a little easier for them. They still ask for their dad, but for now I can change the subject and they seem to forget about it. I am sure they will have a lot of questions for him when they grow up.” I could only feel sadness for what this father had given up for his own selfish wants. He would never know the love of a grown son or the satisfaction of a life spent raising them. The good news was this

While Mitchell is handling the demand for Thanksgiving, he is also spearheading the efforts for the organization’s “Adopt-a-Family.” “I’m working on both at the same time,” Mitchell explained. “I have a lot of good help.” Six volunteers staff the program day in and day out, but the process gets more and more help closer to the holiday. In addition to volunteers coming in, the Burlington High School DRIVEN service group will be in Dec. 12, helping pack boxes and ringing bells in the community to raise funds.

there are special items in the food pantry. Mitchell said the shelves have cooking materials like beef and chicken stock, holiday treats like Jello. Love Inc. also purchased an additional $5,000 in food pantry items. The generosity of the surrounding community helps the organization make it through. “The Burlington community, they come together for this,” Schoessling said. Mitchell added, “It’s astounding.” To donate, adopt a family or volunteer, contact Love Inc. at 7636226.

The Christmas program involves Christmas gifts for a needy family, which adds up in a hurry. Looking at what an average Christmas costs – anywhere from $150 to $250 for a full family’s worth of gifts – the total cost can exceed $100,000 for the 500 or so families signed up. “We will not let someone go without Christmas,” Schoessling explained. Currently, Love Inc. is looking for people to sponsor families. Any families that are not sponsored will be helped in part by the Tri County Riders Toy Run funds – a record $25,100 this year. What’s old is new again By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

Located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, Kenosha is the fourth largest city in Wisconsin and also the fourth largest on the western shore of Lake Michigan. A city with a beautiful lakefront and a population estimated at 99,889, it is a thriving community that has attracted both residents and visitors to take advantage of its cultural activities, restaurants, and to take a look into its historical past. Kenosha has come a long way since the first settlers made their way from the east coast to build communities in the area. Although there is evidence that the Paleo Indians first settled in the area during the era of the glaciers about 13,500 years ago it was the Potawatomi and Ojibwa Indians who in the 1800s discovered the area where the Pike River met with Lake Michigan. Attracted by the rich vegetation and trees along the shore and the presence of wetlands where birds and fowl were abundant the area was a perfect place for the Indian tribes to settle and hunt. Noting the number of fish, predominately trout or as they were also known pike, who entered the river to spawn, they set up camps where they would be close to the shores for ease of fishing. Prior to 1830 there were at least three Indian villages in the area. All disappeared by 1834 as the Indians moved on to other areas. Eastern settlers arrive A group of settlers made their way from New York to the area in the 1830s. Known as the Western Emigration Company, they were led by John Bullen, Jr. and sought to purchase enough land to build a town. They settled in the area on June 6, 1835. Here they began to build houses out of logs from the many trees in the area. Churches and a school quickly followed and the community became known as Pike Creek. As the community continued to grow, the port located here also became a major shipping port on the Great Lakes. With growth comes changes and in 1837 the name of the community was changed to Southport to

reflect the importance of the shipping port. By 1850 the community was ready for another change. It adopted the name Kenosha a version of the name given to the area by the Ojibwa Indians, “Kinoja.” Although the community is no longer known as Southport, the Southport name remains popular in the community. A south side neighborhood and an elementary school have retained the name and it is often seen incorporated in various businesses in the area. Automobile center While Detroit is thought of as the automobile capitol of the country, in the early 1900s Kenosha became well known as the producer of millions of automobiles and trucks. Several companies were responsible for a variety of automobiles that were developed and manufactured here. By 1900 the Sullivan Becker Engineering firm developed a prototype steam engine. The Thomas Jeffery Company which was known for its line of Sterling bicycles, made the switch to automobiles when they introduced their Rambler Runabout in 1902. It was one of the first autos to be built using a mass production technique. And it was the first automobile to have a steering wheel. Prior to the Rambler, automobiles were steered by a tiller, rather than steering wheel. Jeffrey sold his company in 1915 to Charles W. Nash, who first changed the name of the company to Nash Motors and then upon acquiring the Hudson Company, which manufactured the Hudson automobile, he renamed his company American Motors Corporation. Partnerships including one with Renault and later with Chrysler allowed many automobiles to be manufactured in Kenosha some of them remembered for being named Car of the Year. AMC’s 1963 Rambler Classic was one that was so honored and about 20 years later, the Alliance manufactured with the Renault partnership was also so honored. As the partnership with Chrysler grew a larger plant was needed to meet the manufacturing needs. The small-

Kenosha’s history reflects a city on the rise

er AMC lakefront plant that had produced automobiles from 1960 to 1988 was demolished in 1990. Approximately 10.000 spectators attended the event. Manufacturing fades Today manufacturing is not the primary income producer in Kenosha. Although companies such as Jockey International and Jelly Bellies, a popular candy, have corporate headquarters here, the influence of manufacturing has declined. Tourism has now become a major source of income for the city. The area of the former AMC lakefront plant has been redeveloped into Harbor Park, an upscale area along the shoreline that is now home of elegant condominiums and the center for cultural and waterfront activities. Here visitors and residents congregate to stroll along the lakeshore and enjoy the marina and water park. The Kenosha County was established in 1850 and the City of Kenosha named as its county seat. In honor of its designation, legislators chose to give the county the same name as the city. Railroad effect One of the reasons Kenosha has grown is the presence of the railroad in the community. Train service has been available since May 1855 when the predecessor of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and the Lake Shore Railroad joined their tracks just south of 52nd Street. Passenger service, however, did not begin until May 1866. Kenosha is the only city in Wisconsin to currently have a Metra station. The Metra trains provide service to Chicago, a trip taken by many residents of Kenosha who commute to Chicago for work. Amtrak also provides train service from Kenosha to Chicago and Milwaukee. In 2000 streetcar line service was revived and today it provides transportation from downtown to Harbor Park and the Metra station. Kenosha is noted to be one of the smallest cities in the United States to have a Streetcar System. Plans are to someday enlarge the area served. Like the streetcar line, Kenosha has built a promising future from its solid past.

Once the site of the Nash automobile factory, this lakefront area is now home to upscale condominiums. Close proximity to Harbor Park and the Metra station make this an attractive place for those who commute to Chicago for work.

Even on a cold morning, residents enjoy a walk or run along the lakefront. This resident was not deterred even though temperatures were in the 20s on this morning.

Kenosha’s distinctive red lighthouse is perhaps the most famous and recognizable of the city’s landmarks
