Aquanuts’ surprise finish overwhelms team president By Ed Nadolski EDITOR IN CHIEF

Cindy Amore admitted Monday that she’d be lying if she said she knew the Aquanuts were going to come away with a national championship last weekend. Amore, president of the Twin Lakes-based water show organization, knew the team was talented – and that a top-three finish was possible. But first place? “Everyone was so totally overwhelmed when they announced the second-place finisher,” Amore said. “We couldn’t believe it.” It meant only one thing: the Aquanuts were Division 1 champions at the 41st Indmar Marine Engines Show Ski Nationals. The last time the Aquanuts claimed a national title was 1984 – the last of three straight national titles for the team. “Most of the kids weren’t even born then,” Amore said See the national champs People still have several opportunities to see the national championship-winning show presented by the Aquanuts. The organization has regular performances scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday nights at Lance Park, Twin Lakes, through Sept. 5.

All the teams displayed skiing tricks and comedy acts for an audience in their themed shows. The 2015 Aquanuts performed the show “College,” loosely based on the 1980 classic movie “Animal House.” Three champion acts The Aquanuts won three separate events on their way to the national team title – ballet line, swivel performance and barefoot act. Amore said it is hard to match the difficulty and artistry of the ballet line, which captured its fifth-straight national title. The Aquanuts won top honors again with their 31-skier, all-female ballet line. The complex performance starts with nine swivel skiers, followed by a thread-the-needle pick up of the remaining 22 skiers – 11 on each side. The move, originally con-

The beauty of Bong County is home to state’s largest recreation area future of the property, began a drive to protect the area for eventual use as a recreational area. Successfully working with the state Legislature, the Bong Memorial Recreation Area was dedicated in 1967. Today the Bong Recreation Area is popular with visitors year round. Due to its large size and varied terrain, there are recreational activities available in this park that are not found in other smaller state recreation areas.

And a lake, too There is no end to outdoor activities while visiting the area. Non-motorized boats such as canoes or kayaks are enjoyed on Wolf Lake. Fishing at Wolf Lake is accommodated by the urban fishing pier and other locations along the shore. For horseback riders, there are 13 miles of trails that can be accessed from Parking Lot J or from the trailhead lot. A state trail pass is required for those 16 years of age and older. Riders must bring your own horse, as none are available at the park. Because of the size of the park, there is room for more activities than are normally allowed in state parks. The park includes areas for dog training, dirt bike and ATV riding, model rocket launching and model airplane flying. Hunting and trapping are allowed in much of the park. The park also offers a variety of wildlife for visitors to encounter. Many species of birds make their home in the park and others spend time here as they migrate. While there are so many activities to enjoy at the park in the summer, don’t forget to visit in winter. Bong Recreation Area offers cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and sledding. Ski trails are not groomed but still will present an enjoyable ski. Snowshoeing is allowed north of Highway BB and off trail anywhere in

A park tour The first stop upon entering the park should be at the Molinaro Visitor Center to view displays and hands-on exhibits. Live animals are featured and, in the solarium, seasonal exhibits feature such topics as butterflies. The center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. year round and from Memorial Day to Labor Day on weekends from noon to 3 p.m. Many visitors come for the day to spend time hiking, biking and picnicking in one of the many designated areas. There are six shelters that may be reserved and also four other open picnic areas that have picnic tables. With more than 16 miles of trails for hiking, there is plenty to explore. The marked trails are found throughout the park and are color-coded. For a shorter walk, two miles of self-guided interpretive nature trails are available. Looking for an immersion into the great outdoors? Reserve one of the 217 campsites of which 54 are equipped with electrical hookups and make it your home for a few days or longer. For those with disabilities, there is a fully accessible cabin available.

Looking for a place to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities with family or friends? A place located not too far from home but far enough to make you feel that you are in a vast open area away from everyday stress? Consider a visit to the state’s largest and oldest recreation area, which is located just nine miles west of Interstate 94 on Highway 142, The Richard Bong State Recreation Area consists of 4,515 acres available for a variety of outdoor activities. The area that is now the park was first the home of English settlers who found that it was a good place to establish farms. From 1842 farms began to appear on the landscape as these immigrants took advantage of the rich soil and tended their fields. As found in most of Wisconsin, farming became a way of life for those who settled here. This peaceful farming community began to change in 1955 when the U.S. Air Force began buying property in the area with the intention of building a Strategic Air Command Base that would be the home of B-52 bombers. The base was to be named in honor of Maj. Richard Bong, a WWII pilot from Wisconsin who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his successful completion of 40 aerial victories in combat. Construction on the air base continued through the 1950s. By the late 1950s the base was considered obsolete and unneeded due to other military bases in the area, leading in 1959 to cancellation of the project. Local citizens of the area and state Rep. George Molinaro, concerned about the

hen Jill Donnelly was told her son, Kade Vance, would never be able to walk, talk or live independently three weeks after a Nov. 27, 2004 car crash, Donnelly’s response was, “That is not acceptable. “I was devastated,” Donnelly said. “I was clueless on what to do. I was thinking, ‘What do I do now?’” That day, Dave Vance, Kade’s father, was driving to Janesville from their rural farm in Delavan when the driver of another vehicle traveling at 70 mph went through the stop sign and hit Vance’s car. Kade was ejected 40 feet from the car and had suffered a severe closed head injury, bruising in his lungs and liver, facial lacerations and a neck injury. He was in the hospital for nine weeks. He remained in a coma for two weeks before he opened his eyes. And even when Kade was awake, he still did not have much movement or activity. His family was elated when, at the hospital, Pat Ehlen, Kade’s grandmother, dropped her phone in the toilet. Kade started laughing. “The doctor saw this (sense of humor) as a positive sign as it shows higher brain functioning,” Ehlen recalled. However,

Kade is now very active and has participated in track and field and Future Farmers of America at Whitewater High School. “I love anything being outside and doing with my hands,” Kade said. “I love fixing things and putting things together.” One example of that was replacing the carburetor on his father’s snow blower – a project he did with his shop class at the high school. Kade, it could be said, surpassed everyone’s expectations, but it did not come without plenty of effort and hard work on his part and the support of his family. He had physical, occupational and speech therapy three times a week, Botox with corrective casting with his feet, horseback riding with the SMILES program and swim therapy. “Everything that was available, she did,” Pat said of Kade’s mom. Kade said he is now looking toward his future. He has a dream of renting an RV with his mom, traveling across the country and holding a fundraiser for a new family each week. Part of that dream includes Kade wanting to drive the RV because, he said, he is very eager to obtain his driver’s license. It won’t be easy but his family is helping him prepare for the written portion of the test. Kade’s dream makes perfect sense. Just ask him. “I love helping people,” he said. “People helped me, and I want to give back.”

Man charged for fifth drunken driving offense A Genoa City man faces his sixth drunken driving offense after being caught in Racine shortly after 2 a.m. Monday. Robert T. Brown, 43, was charged with felony drunken driving and a misdemeanor count of operating a motor vehicle with a license revoked. According to the criminal complaint filed in the Racine County Circuit Court Monday, Brown was allegedly

traveling south on I-94 when stopped by a Racine Sheriff’s Department deputy because of the revoked license. The deputy allegedly detected an odor of intoxicants and noted Brown’s speech was slurred. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises. Summertime grant generates $20,000 in assistance

This week we share the breakdown for the Summertime Foundation $10,000 matching grant. We like to share with all of you and the Summertime Foundation, which made this matching grant possible, where every penny was spent to help those most in need. Every day we receive letters, phone calls and emails from friends, neighbors, case workers and often times people in need write a letter requesting the kind of help that The Time Is Now to Help, all of us together, can give. People desperate for car repairs to retain jobs or get to medical care, children in need of food, school supplies and shoes, senior citizens in need of beds, dental care, glasses and toiletries, single mothers unable to pay high utility bills and rent. There are so many different reasons why our fellow Americans need our assistance. Job loss, medical emergencies, accidents, expensive medications, lack of child support and other unplanned life emergencies are usually the cause. Whatever the cause of poverty, thanks to all of you and the Summertime Foundation we were there to help over 45 people in their most desperate time of need. The Time Is Now to Help and all those we assist are so grateful for everyone’s generosity

and faith in our mission to remove the pains of poverty. This is how all of us helped: Rent and shelter – $10,176 Two young women with life-threatening diseases were given help with rent assistance. The suffering due to their condition is far beyond anything a young person should have to endure, but they are with dignity and safe from homelessness thanks to the Summertime Foundation and all of you. Both were awaiting a decision on their disability, unable to work or even leave their apartments with the health care their conditions entail. Four single mothers with children were provided security deposit and first month’s rent to enable them to move to safe shelter, preventing homelessness. A senior citizen with cancer and his wife were given rental assistance. These are just a few examples of how your donations, matched by the Summertime Foundation $10,000 matching grant, were used this past month to remove the pains of poverty. Thank you and God bless you.

Utilities – $5,050 Electricity – $3,250, gas – $1,800 Thanks to the Summertime Foundation $10,000 matching grant and your generosity, a working poor family will get through the summer months without their utilities disconnected. Job loss and low wages put them at risk for living without hot water, lights and appliances. A job opportunity will keep them safe going forward now that they are up to date on their past due utility bills. A senior citizen who used her limited income to pay for medications and a car repair came up short when she received a high utility bill from running her airconditioning. Because of heart disease she has to run her air-conditioning or risk even further complications when it is hot and humid. Three single mothers with children were given help with both high gas and electric bills thanks to all of you and the Summertime Foundation. These single parent households will not risk eviction due to failure to pay utilities, lack of refrigeration, loss of hot water and so much more, thanks to all of you. Food – $816.48 Valuable food assistance and necessary emergency food deliveries were made possible by you, our donors, matched by the Summertime Foundation

$10,000 matching grant. The pains of hunger were removed for children home for summer break, senior citizens cutting back on their food expenses to try to make ends meet and working poor families unable to purchase healthy food choices. Grocery gift cards were given to those that have transportation to grocery stores. Food was purchased by volunteers and delivered to those who are home bound as a result of lack of transportation or health conditions. Mothers cried happy tears when they received food for their hungry children and senior citizens were smiling once more when they no longer were only living on dry cereal or canned soup. All our fellow creations felt the love, caring and sharing you and the Summertime Foundation shared with them by giving them the simple gift of food. Transportation –$2,185.52 Safe, reliable transportation was a blessing for a working poor family, a senior citizen and a single mother. If you have ever had car trouble you know how important reliable transportation is. If you need that transportation to get to your job that pays for your food and rent, where even missing just one day of work will mean the difference between paying your bills or coming

Slices of Life She wasn’t even my dog. Not even close. Even though she and I lived in the same house, she clearly answered to another master – my husband. Still, I loved her like you love a family dog that’s been around for more years than you have fingers. She loved playing fetch. She was a retriever, so I guess that makes sense. We could throw a ball or a stick (or whatever object she was fetching that day) for hours and she’d keep going until we made her quit. Her favorite place was the lake. She loved to swim. Combine that with retrieving and you had perfection – from her perspective, at least. Each summer, she’d find herself a good stick and it would be her “toy” to fetch from the lake during the long, hot days we spent there. My husband would throw it as far as he could and she’d joyfully (and I do mean joyfully) bound into the water – swimming once it got deep enough. She’d grab the stick in her mouth, swim back to shore and drop her toy at my husband’s feet. Then she’d give whomever was nearby a doggy shake shower before turning toward the lake to fetch again. And again. And again. As long as we’d let her. I’m so glad we had the lake for her to love. She was a good dog (great

dog) in most regards. She didn’t chew or jump on the furniture. She was awesome with kids and she patiently and gently put up with the cats (sometimes with a deep doggy sigh). She was pretty good about staying in the yard (unless a neighbor’s garbage was calling to her nose). If something was broken or someone got into the cat treats, she was pretty sure she was in trouble, even when it was clearly the cats’ fault. She was a trustworthy, loyal companion. She never did learn to walk properly on a leash. She wouldn’t relent to it, always tugging and pulling to the point that we thought she might choke. I am sure she fully understood the “heel” command. She was a smart girl. She just refused to acknowledge it. It was one of the few instances of her asserting her independence. Another involved her phobias. She was a big dog – 85 pounds in her heyday – but the smallest details could put her in a tizzy. Certain floor coverings were taboo. She’d walk on wood, but not

laminate. Vinyl was okay, but not her favorite. She refused to go down the stairs to the basement. The kitchen pantry terrified her. It happened to be where we kept her food so that sort of benefitted us. One time we got her a fancy new water dish. She wouldn’t drink out of it because it scared her. She went out the back door to do her business, but would only access it from the right side of the doorframe. She wouldn’t go out the door leading to the garage. The garage itself, however, was fine. We quit trying to figure her out years ago and just loved her for what she was – quirks and all – because every family has its quirks. Her three favorite times of the day were breakfast, lunch and dinner. Her favorite food was scrambled eggs. When my husband entered the kitchen, she figured she had a chance of eating and she’d give him a stare down, darting her eyes between him and her food dish. We called this look “the eyeball.” After lunch she got a treat and wouldn’t let up until you gave her one. The peanut butter flavor gave her the toots so we quit buying those. The hardest part about having a dog is that they grow old too soon. She was old and this has been coming for some time. We’ve known

she was nearing the end and I thought I was prepared. We talked about her ailments and the fact that she might be suffering. She was less active and seemed sad sometimes. She hesitated before going upstairs because it took effort for her to climb them. She quit jumping up in the morning in anticipation of breakfast and instead would stay sleeping under the bed. This summer, she didn’t

really fetch the stick, but carried it in her mouth while wading in the lake. Doing the normal things was getting harder. We all saw that. And we knew. And I thought I was ready. But you’re never ready. Not really. I’m not sure it’s possible. Still, I didn’t realize how much I wasn’t ready – to wake up without her under the bed. To never throw the stick for her again, or get the

eyeball or make her eggs. She wasn’t even my dog. But she was our dog. And she was a part of our family – an important part. I’m going to miss her. Sure am. Already do.
