From haughty to humble Rockefeller daughter’s high-end dreams for Kenosha’s Carol Beach never materialized By Sandra Landen-Machaj CORRESPONDENT
The Kenosha County community that eventually became Carol Beach was originally the dream of Edith Rockefeller McCormick. Edith was the daughter of John D. Rockefeller, a founder of Standard Oil. She led a life of wealth and extravagance. Her father was known for his frugality and often was at odds with his headstrong daughter. Edith married Harold Fowler McCormick, son of Cyrus McCormick, the inventor of the mechanical reaper, in 1895. The marriage was a troubled one. Two of their five children died in early childhood, their oldest son John Rockefeller McCormick of scarlet fever at the age of 5 years and Editha in infancy. Edith suffered from depression and went to Switzerland to be treated by noted psychiatrist Carl Jung. It is said that she stayed in Zurich for eight years and contributed generously to the Zurich Psychological Society. The McCormicks were known for their generosity. They funded the John McCormick Institute of Infectious Diseases in Chicago.
These researchers later isolated the bacteria responsible for scarlet fever. In 1919 land that was given to the McCormicks as a wedding gift was donated to become Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo. Edith was also a contributor to many artistic projects, often supporting artists and writers. Housing project The marriage ended in divorce in 1921 – a very expensive divorce. Edith continued her very flamboyant life and continued spending money on many projects. In 1924 Edith purchased a 1,554-acre parcel of land with plans to establish a new community. Located at the Wisconsin/Illinois border on the south, Lake Michigan on the east, Sheridan Road on the West and what is now 80th Street on the North, it was called “Chiwaukee” because of its equidistance from Chicago and Milwaukee. Edith envisioned an upscale community that would be self contained. It would develop its own business district, and have all the amenities that an upscale community required. There

That figure compares to 74,318 deer harvested during the 2013 firearm season. Preliminary figures for the second segment of the firearm season totaled 24,717, up 34 percent from 18,483 in 2013. Overall, the total represented a slight increase from 2013, with a preliminary first segment harvest of 51,830 compared with 55,708 deer harvested during the first weekend of the 2013 firearm season. Roundy’s stores offer flu shots best way to protect against the flu. They also say that even though the holiday season has arrived, it is not too late to receive a flu vaccine. It takes two weeks for the antibodies to develop and provide protection. Flu season typically peaks in winter and can last a few months but virus activity is unpredictable year to year. However, immunity to the vaccination can be expected to last 6-8 months. The vaccination is not a guarantee that the virus will
not be contracted, but those who are vaccinated will experience a shorter duration of the illness and milder symptoms. Other flu prevention techniques include drinking plenty of water, washing hands frequently and thoroughly and getting an adequate amount of sleep each night. For more information, visit the Pick ‘n Save, Copps, Metro Market or Mariano’s website for a list of pharmacies and their hours of operation.

Roundy’s stores – Pick ‘n Save, Copps, Metro Market and Mariano’s – are making flu shots available at all pharmacies, with no appointment needed during all pharmacy operating hours. All Roundy’s pharmacies have certified immunizers on staff and are available to administer the traditional flu vaccine, as well as the HD vaccine for patients ages 65 and older. For added convenience, customers can simply stop by the pharmacy during their weekly grocery shopping, and pharmacists can administer the vaccinations in-store. Roundy’s flu shots are given at a regular price of $26. Roundy’s flu shots will protect against several strains of the A flu virus. There will also be a Quadrivalent vaccine available that protects against the additional B virus. “We’re pleased that year after year more and more of our patients and customers take advantage of this advanced service that we offer,” said George Kowalski, vice president Roundy’s Pharmacy. “We will be encouraging as many people as possible to protect themselves and their loved ones this year by getting their flu shot.” The Center for Disease Control recommends that all people 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine, as a yearly vaccination is the

Cyber safety starts with personal vigilance Consumers must be their own line of defense, banker says
By Jennifer Eisenbart STAFF WRITER
Dealing with cyber safety and battling hackers are nothing new to the banking industry. As Jeff Schmid of Fox River State Bank, Burlington, explained recently, banks have numerous safety procedures and programs in place to protect customer safety. However, as hacking into large stores’ confidential electronic information seems to happen more often, Schmid said there are changes coming down the pipeline to improve security. In the meantime, however, there are steps small businesses and consumers can take to protect themselves. That is especially true this time of year when holiday shopping has most people pulling credit cards out of their wallets on a regular basis. By the fall of 2015, Schmid said, credit and debit cards will be required
to have “pin and chip” technology – meaning that two different scans of the card will be required or a business will be 100 percent liable for losses. Currently, banks bear the brunt of recent largescale hacks – such as Target and Home Depot – by covering the losses of their customers as the result of credit and debit card fraud. But with that new technology will also come a price for businesses – paying for new credit card readers. Schmid expects smaller businesses may end up limiting what kind of payments they accept. “Who pays for fraud? It’s all the small businesses across the United States,” he said. Schmid also points out most hackers go after the big chains and not smaller businesses because of how credit and debit cards are used. Some tips from Schmid on how to stay safe shopping:
• If you’re using wireless Internet, make sure passwords are strong – containing at least one uppercase and one lowercase letter, and a number. • Keep security programs up to date with regular checks for patches and updates. • Check accounts for suspicious activity. If possible, sign up for electronic statements and make use of Internet banking to monitor accounts. • Always use a debit card as a credit card. A signature is a stronger safeguard than a pin number. • Use a bank-issued credit card sleeve to prevent smartphone scanning and scamming. • Every consumer can get a free credit report each year. Use it to confirm not only a credit score, but to look for unauthorized accounts in your name. • Scan a computer frequently for malware/spyware.
• Keep in mind that financial institutions will never ask for personal information online. • If you do Internet banking on your smartphone, don’t use wifi – use the cell phone’s communication network. • Look for multi-factor identifications (ones with more than one step) and always check to see that Internet addresses that require personal information have the prefix “https,” indicating a secure connection. • Carefully examine the website before you start entering data. Look for anomalies like misspellings or unprofessional language that would indicate a scam site. Schmid also said that, if an ID or information is stolen, to call your financial institution immediately. A bank or credit union PHOTO ILLUSTRATION Hi-Liter can lock down an account Consumers are the first line of defense when it comes within minutes. Then call to the online safety of their credit cards and other perthe insurance company and sonal financial information, according to a local banker local law enforcement. who deals with cyber safety issues.

Elderly woman swindled out of house Dear W.C., I am a senior citizen who has been swindled out of my house. Several years ago my house was on the verge of being condemned by the township. Someone I believed to be a contractor came to my door offering to do the work needed to keep my home from being condemned. They gave me a price that I thought was very cheap to remove the mold and repair the roof. They even fixed some of the leaking pipes and plumbing that was bad. I had been making a payment every month to pay off the original amount quoted. I did not know they put a lien on my house for a much higher amount. Several months ago I wanted to sell my house because it is just too much for me to care for at my age. I was going to move into an independent living condominium with the proceeds from my house. I not only couldn’t sell my house, I ended up giving it up to them over the lien. There was not even enough equity in my house to pay this amount off. I feel so foolish for not reading all the fine print on our arrangement. I just signed everything, believing he was telling me the truth about our contract. He seemed so nice and told me not to worry that he would take care of everything. I was so vulnerable at the time because my husband had just died after a long illness and I did not have the money to do the household repairs. I ended up giving up my house and moving into an apartment with the little bit of money I get from Social Security. I do not have anything left to pay my electric bill. I do not have money for food or gas for my car. Can you help a foolish old woman get back on her feet? Dear readers,

to the house, he yelled at me. He called me stupid. As if I didn’t feel bad enough already, he had to make me feel worse. Then he told me he had just lost his job so he could not send me any money. I told him that was not why I was calling. I can’t ask him for any help.” She began to cry while sharing this very personal exchange with me. I reassured her she was not stupid and told her how many senior citizens and disabled people are taken advantage of every day. While going over her bills and budget, I noticed a note about an upcoming auto insurance premium. The woman proudly showed me she had recently renewed her driver’s license and passed all her driving tests. She was worried she would not be able to pay her auto insurance coming due next month. She also told me how her car needed new tires as the recent snow had been nearly impossible to get anywhere in. I asked where she was trying to go and her answer was, “The food pantry and the doctor.” After going over her bills and budget, I put together a plan for her financial situation. We paid her rent for two months and her overdue electric bill, paying some into the future. We restored her disconnected phone service so she would have a phone in case of emergencies. After inspecting her vehicle and finding it worth fixing, I made sure the repairs were done to make it safe. We also had new tires put on that would greatly improve her safety in the winter months. Her car assistance was finished off with a full tank of gas. A volunteer dropped off several bags of groceries, including toilet paper, tissues, lotion, hand soap – all the things besides food that many of our poverty stricken
neighbors do without. Since her rent was reasonable and she had a good landlord, she remained at her rental. This assistance allowed her to be able to pay her car insurance and get back on her feet again. The next time I paid a visit to this senior citizen, I saw a completely different woman. Gone were the slumped shoulders and sad eyes. This time she smiled and gave me a hug. Her whole demeanor had changed as we renewed her faith in her fellow man. Just as I had to put aside my anger and disgust over the way she had been treated, she had to do this as well in order to move on. Also, the budget we had implemented together was a success. I pray there will be a day that our senior citizens and disadvantaged are no longer victimized by the greedy. I pray that illness and accidents do not cause lifelong hardships, poverty and pain. I pray for all children to grow up in safety and love. I hope you can join me in praying for these things and the continuing of our good works together, ending the pains of poverty for many in need. Thank you and God bless you.

• Carol Beach would be a golf course for the enjoyment of the residents, a playground for the children and the homes would all be large and constructed in the popular Tudor style. Construction began and a large arch was built over Sheridan Road advertising the coming development. The streets were installed and homes began to rise. A contest was held offering a prize of $1,500 for a permanent name for the community. Indiana resident, Elmer Huge was credited with providing the winning name of Edithton Beach. Wealthy residents Edithton Beach began to attract some of the wealthy Chicago-area residents including Ham Fisher who built a large home on South Lake Shore Drive. Ham Fisher was known for his love of boxing and was the cartoonist who created the popular comic strip of the day, Joe Palooka. It was at Edithton Beach that he drew the comic strip and also encouraged favorite
(Continued from front page) boxers to come and train. Joe Louis was one of the boxers who accepted Fisher’s hospitality. While the community began to grow, Edith continued to spend her money on both her lavish lifestyle and her many donations. Her father refused to give her more money and she began to deplete her trust fund. Then the Depression struck and as Edith‘s debts continued to grow the project began to wither. The abandoned streets and the few houses that had been completed were the only evidence of Edith’s dreams. The project remained vacant until 1946 when Joseph Shaffron decided to revive the community. In 1946 there were many returning World War II veterans who needed affordable housing for their families. Shaffron, who was a local real estate investor and developer, changed the focus of the development from high-end to affordable.
the name of the community from Edithton Beach to Carol Beach in honor of his daughter. The community was promoted as the “second Evanston, Ill.” and more moderate homes were built. The area is the home of many wetlands, including some of the most significant in the United States. Building in the area is complete with much of the remaining land under the protection of the Town of Pleasant Prairie, Kenosha County, The State of Wisconsin and the Army Corps of Engineers. The name Chiwaukee remains as the name of the prairie, a 250-acre preserve at the south end of Carol Beach that contains wetlands and is considered an ecological jewel of this wetland area. In this area visitors are able to enjoy hiking, birding, and nature studies. Visitors can often be seen photographing the area and its wildlife. While today Carol Beach is part of the Village of PleasName change ant Prairie, it is still known to Shaffron again changed its residents as Carol Beach.

Snowmobilers urged to focus on safety The Illinois Department of Natural Resources urges snowmobilers to focus on safety this fall and winter to avoid accidents and injuries while enjoying time on the snow and ice. “We want everyone who spends time outdoors enjoying winter recreation to be safe, and snowmobile operators and riders need to be particularly cautious,” said DNR Conservation Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez. “Snowmobile operators should stay on designated snowmobile trails and be aware of possible obstructions to avoid accidents and possible injuries.” While Illinois has not yet had significant snow this season, autumn cold snaps and periodic snowfall should prompt snowmobile operators to think ahead about safety, according to the DNR. Sled owners and operators should review the rules of operation; have registration and insurance in place; never drink and drive a snowmobile; and, always have landowner permission to ride and respect private property rights, the environment, other snowmobilers and other people outdoors enjoying winter recreation. During the 2013-2014 winter season in Illinois, there were 27 snowmobile incidents reported, resulting in five fatalities. Safety experts report that in North America, more than half of all snowmobile fatalities involve intoxicated operators. While the DNR encourages everyone to take a snowmobile safety course before their first ride of the season, state law re-
quires that persons at least 12 years of age and less than 16 years must have in possession a valid Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate of Competency issued by IDNR in order to operate a snowmobile alone. Some traditional instructor-led safety courses administered by the DNR are still available in the coming weeks. Snowmobilers can also satisfy state safety requirements by taking one of two online courses to become familiar with safe sledding practices or for a refresher course on staying safe. Details are available on the IDNR website at www. dnr.illinois.gov/safety/Pages/ SnowmobileSafety.aspx. Basic safety tips for safe snowmobiling include: • Never consume alcohol before or during a ride; • Know your equipment, and make sure that equipment is in proper working order; • Wear sensible, protective clothing designed for snowmobiling, like a full-size helmet, goggles, or face shield to prevent injuries from twigs, stones, ice chips and flying debris; • Avoid wearing long scarves, which may get caught in moving parts of the snowmobile; • Know the terrain you are going to ride. If unfamiliar to you, ask someone who has traveled over it before. Be aware of trails or portions of trails that may be closed; • Drowning is one cause of snowmobile fatalities. When not familiar with the thickness of the ice or water currents,
avoid these areas; • Know the weather forecast, and especially the ice and snow conditions in the area; • Always use the buddy system. Never ride alone or unaccompanied; • Travel at a reasonable rate of speed for your visibility and conditions. Snowmobile operators and other outdoor recreation enthusiasts are reminded that a minimum of 4 inches of snow cover must be present for snowmobile use on state-managed property. Those interested in visiting IDNR state sites should call ahead to site offices to get the latest snow conditions and trail closure information. Violations can result in a minimum $120 fine and possible arrest. For a list of site offices/contact information, check the IDNR website at www.dnr.illinois. gov/recreation.

Local Girl Scouts take cookie program digital Members of the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, for the first time in history, will be able to sell Girl Scout Cookies to customers through a national Digital Cookie platform. The local council will pilot the platform from Jan. 9 to March 9, 2015. This addition to the Girl Scout Cookie Program is intended to enhance and expand the program’s ability to teach girls new skills for business and life. The added platform adds a digital layer that broadens and strengthens the essential five skills girls learn in the traditional cookie program, including goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Digital Cookie, as the program is called, will introduce lessons about online marketing, application use and e-commerce to more than 1 million excited Girl Scouts. Digital Cookie follows Girl Scouts’ classic hands on approach to teaching girls new skills, according to Girl Scout officials. Through the platform, girls will maintain their own protected, personalized websites to market their cookie business to local consumers, accept orders via credit card, and cookies will ship directly to their customers. This means consumers who know Girl Scouts participating in Digital Cookie will
receive e-marketing materials from them this season with invitations to visit their cookie websites and make purchases. The platform places an emphasis on the safety of girls and customers alike and offers an online experience that allows girls to learn about digital money management using dashboards to track their sales and goals. Digital Cookie tailors the traditional Girl Scout Cookie Program to fit the modern world, helping give more girls an important foundation in technology, according to Girl Scout officials. They said it also gives customers a new way to help girls learn 21st century skills that dovetail with traditional door-to-door and booth sales to combine customer relationship and interpersonal skills with e-commerce training. As with the traditional cookie program, the net revenue earned from the cookie sale will remain with Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois. Girls decide how to spend their troop cookie money and reinvest it back into their neighborhoods through community service projects and learning experiences, like travel opportunities. One-hundred percent of the net revenue raised through the Girl Scout Cookie Program stays with the local council and troops.
