Have you ever dreamed of great achievements in your life, such as completing a marathon, or driving in the Indianapolis 500 auto races? Have you dreamed of being Miss Wisconsin or even Miss America or perhaps part of the team to find the cure for cancer, but you believed people when they told you that you would never make it. Or perhaps you wished to be an astronaut and go to the moon. Most of us have had these types of dreams but they remained just that, dreams far out of our reach. The expedition was scheduled to leave in 1928 and Perkins, with his love of adventure, was determined to be a part of this historic journey. While Perkins was certain that he would be part of this expedition, it appeared his chances were remote that he would succeed in being assigned to the crew of the expedition. Unfortunately for Perkins, Admiral Byrd was one of those who felt that Perkins did not have what it would take to survive the rigors of travel to Antarctica. Perkins was not easily discouraged in spite of his rejection by Byrd, and trav-
