or about as long as there has been water, sun and sand, summer has meant freedom for teens and young adults. Throw in a boat, some water skis and a towrope and you have all the makings of unbridled summer fun. It’s something the members of the Twin Lakes Aquanuts water show team know and love. And it’s precisely the feeling that 15 years ago drove Aquanuts alumnus Sue Richey to find a way to bring the exhilarating freedom of water sports to all people regardless of their abilities. Today Richey, an occupational therapist for Alexander Leigh Center for Autism in Crystal Lake, Ill., is among the country’s experts in adaptive aquatics. She is also the soft-spoken champion for scores of area children and adults who otherwise would never have a chance to feel the wind in their faces and spray of the lake against their legs. On July 30, Richey and the Aquanuts hosted their 15th annual adaptive aquatic clinic for Dreams for Kids, a Chicago-based organization with a mission of empowering youth who live with disabilities or poverty. The event was held at Lance Park on Lake Mary. Volunteers are the key Lawless said the expertise and expense needed to host such an event puts it out of reach for groups like his. But thanks to an army of volunteers – from adult boat owners and drivers who take a day off of work to help, to teen water show team members who provide the muscle and enthusiasm – the event delivers priceless
