Unprecedented bond for Obregon
Hero’s reward
He’s held on $5 million, 32 charges
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
EARLENE FREDERICK Hi-Liter
Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth (left) presents the Silver Star Award to deputy John Wilke during a ceremony Oct. 30 honoring department personnel who go above and beyond the call of duty. Wilke was recognized for risking his own life by pulling an unconscious man from a burning car on June 21, 2014. The man had fled from deputies at high speed and crashed his car into a pole before the car overturned and burst into flames, according to the commendation honoring Wilke.
Andrew Obregon, 32, was ordered held on an unprecedented $5 million bond by the Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office Nov. 4. Obregon, of Bristol, stands accused of 32 charges, including first-degree intentional homicide of Tywon Anderson and attempted first-degree intentional homicide of a Brighton resident during his final attempt to escape custody Oct. 13. “The state is requesting what I believe is the highest bond in (Kenosha) County’s history,” said deputy district attorney Michael Graveley. Graveley cited multiple reasons for setting the bond, including eluding authorities on five separate occasions, three stolen vehicles and two robberies through both Kenosha and Racine counties. If convicted on all charges, Obregon would face a maximum of life imprisonment plus 439 years. Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge Chad Kerkman said this is the most unusual case he has ever presided over. “I have been in this community for a long time, been a court commissioner for over 40 years and have been on the criminal bench for about six years,” said Kerkman. “And in my lifetime I have never witnessed this type of behav-
847-395-6216
ior that (Obregon) exhibited in this case.” Kidnapping was added to the first-degree attempted homicide charge, but Obregon said through court-appointed attorney Kristyne Watson that there was no intent. “He clearly denied that he intended to kill her,” Watson told Circuit Court judge Chad Kerkman, referring to the woman Obregon beat during his atAndrew tempt to flee. Obregon However, Kerkman noted Obregon had pushed the victim downstairs and beat her repeatedly, necessitating the need for a Flight for Life helicopter transport to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. “He literally changed the habits of everyone residing within Southeastern Wisconsin,” Graveley said, noting that people said they changed their habits and way of living through the 22-day crime spree. The spree began Sept. 21 when authorities discovered the remains of Anderson, who was Obregon’s purported drug dealer, in a Town of Paris cornfield.

Town opposes ATC route

Wheatland residents unhappy with transmission line plans STAFF WRITER
Town of Wheatland officials, along with about 30 community members voiced their opposition to American Transmission Company’s power-line upgrades at a board meeting Monday night. The ATC arrived in the southeast Wisconsin region in 2013 with plans to create a 25-mile, 138-kilovolt transmission line, an upgrade from the existing 69-kilovolt line. It is part of the Spring Valley-North Lake Geneva Electric Reliability project. A part of the plan affects a four-mile stretch in Wheatland, targeting either 368th Avenue (County O) or 352nd Avenue (County KD), which directly affects residential areas. Many present at the Monday voiced discontent about the plan, noting a potential decrease in property values, environmental concerns and the impact it will have on the overall aesthetics of the community. “As a long-standing resident of County Highway KD, we are opposed to it,” said resident Maryanne Wiley. “There are a lot of people that can be affected by the power line.” One of the ATC plans calls for the removal of trees in exchange for power lines. “The proposed power line will not only be an eyesore, but will drastically affect our property values,” she said. Wiley also expressed concern related to increased exposure to potential radiation and other environmental hazards due to the upgrade. Town Board President William Glembocki assured all residents that the board will not support the proposal, but acknowledged Wheatland officials are limited in their options. “This resolution excludes all proposed locations for the town – it is not an option,” Glembocki said. “I would encourage all of

along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Kenosha last week has been identified as Robert M. Dermody, 40, of Racine. Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department officials said Dermody had been sought in a recent missing persons report. According to the Sheriff’s Department, a local resident discovered the body on the rocks along the shoreline near a residence in the 900 block of Sheridan Road and called police shortly after 8 a.m. Kenosha County detectives attended an autopsy of the body on Nov. 2. Sheriff’s officials said further tests and investigation were needed to confirm the identity. No foul play was initially suspected and there were no signs of trauma to the body, other than typical postmortem deterioration. The City of Kenosha Police Department is assisting in this case as part of the original missing person case.
you to attend the next ATC meeting (on Dec. 1),” he said. Glembocki told residents that he has attended every ATC informational meeting in western Kenosha County, but believes the company has been limited in responding to concerns. The project includes the addition of both a 138- and 69-kilovolt substation on an ATC-owned parcel on Highway 50 in Wheatland, or at an existing substation called Richmond Road in the town of Randall. According to the ATC, the $71-to-$91 million project would deliver benefits to the area, including strengthening the electric system to meet growing demands. The project will give more rapid power restoration in event of power outages. Wheatland is not the first municipality to oppose, or express concern related to the ATC plan. In Dec. 2014, the Town of Salem and Village of Paddock Lake worked together to develop a plan that satisfied both parties while allowing the ATC to move forward. While the ATC made revisions to accommodate Salem, they declined to modify any of the Paddock Lake plans. Paddock Lake is appealing the decision, citing interference with a Tax Increment Finance District, along with hindering long-term development projects. Additionally, it will impact adjacent County Parks in Paddock Lake. The transmission company has already implemented plans in western Racine County, along state Highway 45 between Union Grove and Franklin in Milwaukee County. The other line runs east, then south of the Paris substation.
‘Oh, the possibilities’
Former Randall Consolidated School student Carson Doty (center) is honored as the winner of the 2015 Kenosha Count Red Ribbon Campaign slogan contest during a Red Ribbon Week ceremony at the school in October. She is flanked by state Sen. Van Wanggaard and state Rep. Samantha Kerkman. Doty, who is now a student at Wilmot High School, submitted the winning slogan of “Being Drug Free … Oh, the Possibilities!”
• The board granted four delinquent property owners a property tax extension, but will accrue interest on the tardy payments. The owners currently owe the township $5,945.82, but with interest, it jumped to $9,354.57. Two of the four owners have owed the town nearly $1,000 since 2008. Despite the resolution, board treasurer Deborah Vos acknowledged it is a “slippery slope” in attempting to collect property taxes, citing two are current residents of the town. • Effective Jan. 1, dog owners will see an increase in annual license fees. Anderson was killed Sept. 19, according to the 29-page criminal complaint, and Kerkman conveyed to those in court that the victim was shot in the back of the head at close range. The description led Anderson’s fraternal twin sister, Tahitha Anderson to leave the proceeding. “This crime affected everyone,” Tahitha Anderson told reporters afterwards. Obregon later robbed and stole a vehicle at a Speedway gas station on Highway 50 near Interstate 94 and broke into Countryside Market on Kenosha County Highway C and Highway 45, authorities allege. Furthermore, the complaint contends, Obregon eluded authorities following high-speed chases, by turning off headlights and hiding in cornfields. In the complaint, Obregon allegedly admitted he swapped license plates and spray painted each stolen vehicle. The last spree came Oct. 13 when he stole a vehicle from a Town of Brighton and fled south to Illinois, where Lake Country authorities pursued him along Russell Road/Highway 173.
EARLENE FREDERICK Hi-Liter
When OnStar – at police request – disabled the stolen vehicle in the City of Zion, Obregon fled on foot for about a mile until authorities took him into custody. “This defendant was literally nonstop until being shot by law enforcement and being directly apprehended and brought down by a Zion police officer,” Graveley said. Other methods that Obregon allegedly tried were enlisting the help of his mother, who was later arrested for aiding a felon and obstructing justice. Prior to his spree, Obregon had three felony convictions, with two in Racine County and another in Walworth County. After being released in fall 2013 for the Walworth County conviction, he was placed on two-year probation. “He has been absconder of that 2-year extended supervision since March of 2015,” Graveley said. “And for a half a year, he has escaped the jurisdiction of the Department of Corrections.” Obregon is due in court for a preliminary appearance Nov. 20.

Elderly mother, disabled daughter need assistance Dear W.C., I live with my mother and care for her. We are both on disability. I was born 32 years ago with a genetic learning disability. I don’t read or write well and I’m not that good at math. My mother is a senior citizen and has bad arthritis. I help her in and out of bed and in and out of the shower. I keep our apartment real clean and I try my best to cook good meals for us. My mom told me about The Time Is Now to Help and she reads me your letters in the newspaper. Since my mom needs some help, I thought maybe I could ask you. Last month our car stopped working when we were at the grocery store. My mom had to call a cab to bring us home. We had to pay the man driving the cab the only money we had left. Then my mom had to call a tow truck to take our car to a place to get fixed. Now my mom is sad because we don’t have enough money to pay our rent. I love my mom very much and I don’t like to see her sad.

they invited me inside. I looked around the small apartment and noted besides the cramped interior it was very clean and orderly. When I asked the women who was keeping the apartment so tidy, the daughter gave me a proud smile and said, “I told you in the letter how I like to keep the apartment nice and clean for my mom.” I complimented her on such a good job she was doing and she again smiled proudly. The daughter then said, “Come see the rest of our home.” She led me around the small two-bedroom apartment, showing me how she made the beds every day, dusted their few knickknacks and even showed me the nearly empty but clean refrigerator. After the short tour and many compliments on the excellent care she was showing the apartment, I asked if we could sit to talk Dear readers, with her mother. daughter wrote, but I helped her write the letter. I could not do it myself and I knew she would not know how, so I helped her write the letter.” I asked the mother, “Have you been able to pay your rent? Do you have food hidden somewhere I didn’t see? Is this new furniture I am sitting on? Are your bills all paid up to date?” I watched as the mother again shook her head as I asked each question and the daughter looked confused. The daughter said, “Mom, I told you to ask for help. I told you I wanted to write a letter because you were crying all the time. I know when you are sad. When our car wouldn’t start you were so sad. When the man came to our door asking for our rent, I saw you cry. I thought when I wrote this letter, it would make you happy again.” I took both the daughter’s and the mother’s hands in mine and said, “There is no shame in helping your daughter write the letter. You were not dishonest in your need for assistance. The Time Is Now to Help wants to make both of you happy again. If you are truly in need of our assistance, and I think you are, we can lend a hand.” The mother was crying when she nodded her head and whispered, “We are.” After her admission of need, I asked to go over their bills and budget. The mother showed me her overdue rent notice, overdue utility bill and car repair invoice. We discussed each expense and, after going over their budget, I noted their rent and utilities were reasonable. The car was in need of a few additional repairs that we provided. After talking to the daughter about what she liked to cook for her mother, I contacted a volunteer to pick up some of their favorite foods. The daughter was very excited to be able to cook for her mother again. After our caring and sharing assistance, this daughter and mother shared tears of joy and several hugs with me. The mother

Gold coins attract more collectors than investors By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
In the last four years, the gold coin market has dropped, according to area dealers. “It is a good time to buy,” said Gianni Rupas, an employee of four years at Costa’s Coins and Currency of Libertyville, Ill.
Rupas noted that while the store’s gold coin inventory is low compared to other precious metals, such as silver, the American Eagle coin remains popular among consumers. Currently, Costa’s sells the Eagle for about $1,175, a decrease from $1,900 in 2011.
American Coins 2 Corp., Antioch, Ill., employee Ziggy Biso revealed similar findings, noting the Eagle remains popular. However, the decrease can be a risky investment, Biso said. “The market price is low,” Biso said. “People don’t
spend too much money on gold these days.” Biso and Rupas agree that gold coins can be costly for both a store and the consumer. “If you would have bought a gold coin four years, and sold it today, you would have lost 40 percent of what you paid,” Rupas said. “Some of the ones we have had, were purchased years ago,” Biso said. “That was when it was high.” While the Eagle remains
the most popular, the least popular are the commemorative coins, Rupas said. With risk for gold, the attention on other metals, including silver, increases. “Gold costs a lot more to keep in stock, because of cost,” Rupas said. Consequently, both stores carry a small percentage of gold coins. Rupas estimates that for every ounce of gold, Costa’s has about 73 ounces of silver.
Like Costa’s, American Coins 2 Corp. acknowledged its gold coin inventory is roughly 2 percent. Rupas noted that with the economy slowly on the rise, he anticipates gold coins could potentially follow the trend. “Money itself is on the upswing,” Rupas said. “More people are buying.” On paper, the gold mining stock price in 2011 was about $2,000 per share compared to roughly $11 per ounce today.
After the gold rush With price down, market runs dry

Gold coins are currently more attractive to collectors than they are as an investment, according to the operators of area coin shops.
At Biederman Jewelers in Elkhorn, Wis., it seems gold just isn’t quite the sought-after precious metal it used to be. Perry Biederman, who has owned and operated the shop at 11 S. Wisconsin St. in Elkhorn since 1980, said people aren’t buying or selling much gold right now. Biederman said like the

stock market, the gold market has been rocky as of lately. “I’ve bought a lot of gold over the years and it’s basically kind of come to a halt,” he said. “There’s not too many people selling.” Biederman said he thinks this is partly because not as many people have gold, like they used to, and partly because the price of gold is down. He said there was a time not too long ago when gold was valued at $1,850 an ounce. As of Friday, Biederman said, 24-karat gold was valued at $1,104.40 an ounce in the Bullion Market. Biederman said when it comes to buying gold, he would be paying $10.53 per pennyweight, 1.55 grams, for 10-karat gold and $14.74 for 14-karat gold. Eric Hurkman of Fontana Jeweler, 553 Valley View Dr., Fontana, Wis., said later in the day, gold was $1,089 an ounce, something not out of the ordinary of the downward trend gold prices have been following since about October 2012 after it peaked at nearly $2,000 an ounce in 2011. While Hurkman said he doesn’t think it’s going to drop much lower than $1,100, if the stock market and economy were to see a boom, this could change. Hurkman admits he’s not an expert on the gold market, so he thinks unless something big were to happen with the economy, gold prices aren’t going to fluctuate greatly one way or another like they have in recent years. “You learn lessons over time and it kind of seems like it would go against the other principals as far as how the economy’s doing,” he said. “Next year, if things become more volatile will people seek to put their money in precious metals, yeah, they may … there’s usually a reason.” Likewise, Hurkman said, as an owner he too plays the market, noting beside gold chains, which are popular item, he doesn’t really stock up heavily on gold jewelry when prices are high. “When I’m looking at $1,900 an ounce, that’s not the time to order a couple hundred gold chains,” he said. However, he added, that when he buys gold at a low price, allowing them to pass on the savings to their customers, he doesn’t re-tag his items, raising the price to match the price of gold. “Why not let it sell at the low price even when the market is high,” he said. “It allows us to have fresh merchandise.” Buying from customers Biederman said while he had people coming in to sell their gold over the past four to five years, he hasn’t seen nearly as much this year. “When the economy tanked people were selling,” he said. “I
spent $50,000 for two or three years in a row buying gold because people were hurting.” While Hurkman doesn’t do a lot of gold buying, he said that likewise, he feels the climate has changed now with the economy improving, gold prices dropping and people aren’t selling their gold like they used to. Hurkman said people trying to sell their gold now compared to four years ago are taking a huge hit, noting a customer who told him she had received $600 for gold a few years back and would have likely only gotten a couple hundred today. “That’s a significant difference,” he said. While the economy has started to bounce back a bit and gas prices have dropped, Biederman said he hasn’t quite seen the bounce back he thought he would. “In my business, I haven’t seen that much of a recovery,” he said. “I think there’s still that adage of what’s tomorrow going to be like. “I think people are a lot more cautious than they were in the 70s, 80s and 90s.” While Hurkman said buying gold from customers isn’t their focus, it’s something they do more as a service to their customers. “We do, but we’re not out there advertising for it, looking for it,” he said. “That wasn’t really what I was looking to do.” Hurkman said while they do it as a “favor for customers,” what he sees more often is customers trading in their gold towards the cost of a new custom piece. Selling gold Hurkman said for those looking to sell gold, it’s important to take the time to shop around, check out a few different shops and most importantly not make a rash decision. He said the cash-for-gold type stores have essentially disappeared now with the price of gold so low. Those operations often took advantage of uninformed customers. He noted one specific customer who came in with about $200 worth of gold. “She looked at me like somebody died,” he said. “I asked, is something wrong and she said, you’re not going to believe this, but I took my gold to one of those cash-for-gold type places and they offered me $35.” Hurkman said not all cashfor-gold stores operate that way, though he strongly recommends those interested in selling their gold take the time to do a little research first. “Go to a different store and compare because not everybody necessarily is going to pay the same,” he said. “You may find that it could be a significant difference and I know that because with some of our customers we’ve had them tell me that.”

Slices of life What do you do with your free time? If given an extra hour or two on a Saturday afternoon, some people will go out and play a round of golf or tennis. (There’s never time for both.) Others will take a warm bath, curl up with a good book or make a fresh batch of homemade peanut butter cookies. Maybe there’s a good movie or game or “Naked and Afraid” on TV. Some (but not many) will clean out the garage. Each of these options has its own attributes, and I might choose any of them on an unencumbered Saturday, but none would be my first choice. I have a secret indulgence reserved for Saturday afternoons. Sometimes my husband joins me. When I have a moment (or two) I opt for a nap. There, I said it. I am a napper. I love (love, love) taking naps. Some Saturday mornings I wake up early just so I can schedule in a nap. I’m creative that way. I do not readily admit to

my nappiness. It might make me appear lazy – sleeping in the middle of the day and all. We live in a society where productivity and action are valued. (Who’s going to clean out the garage if I am on the couch napping?) Still I believe there are inherent benefits to the occasional siesta. I’m not alone. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 85 percent of mammals are polyphasic sleepers. Polyphasic sleepers snooze in short spurts, aka naps. My felines nap all the time. (They don’t call them catnaps for nothing.) If 85 percent of the animal population is doing something there has to be a good reason for it. Napping is a way to avoid predators, get through

I’ve always been a closet napper. Then I did some research for this column and discovered we afternoon sleepers should be loud and proud about our noontime habits. A little afternoon sleep can increase creativity, help you lose weight and boost your sex life. (Ka-ching!) There isn’t any pill anywhere that can do that. Counting sheep after lunch? I say count me in. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. She invites readers to follow the Slices of Life page on Facebook.

if you can get your significant other to nap with you. I may sleep on Saturdays, but some are taking napping to new levels – and days of the week. There’s a growing trend that encourages short naps at work. Employers are recognizing the positive benefits of napping and allowing workers to catch a little shut-eye during the lunch hour. Some even provide napping pods and zero gravity chairs to enhance the whole experience. Gentle lighting and vibrations wake employees when it’s time to get back to work. It gives whole new meaning to the term “sleeping on the job.”

study found that short naps improve performance and alertness. According to the buzz at Buzzfeed, napping can heighten creativity, promote relaxation, enhance memory, brighten mood and lower blood pressure. We’ve all heard the expression, “You snooze you lose.” With naps, this might just be the case. Studies show that those walking around with bags under their eyes reach for more highfat, sugary foods than the well-rested. That’s not all. I saved the best for last. Sleep deprivation dampens sex drive. Napping reverses the effect. This is exponentiated

Animal kingdom aside, many important and influential people throughout history were nappers. Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, Napoleon, Einstein and Thomas Edison all napped – but not together. There are actual books written on the benefits of napping, but why read about the subject when you can take a real nap yourself? Scientific research shows numerous benefits to catching a few ZZZs in the afternoon. A NASA
