Fair hits sweet spot in 2015
Fair memories Below: Justin Kirchner, 6, of Brighton, bears down as he strives to go the longest distance during the pedal-power tractor pull at the Kenosha County Fair held Aug. 19-23 in Wilmot. For someone who had just 12 weeks to plan this year’s Kenosha County Fair, Denise Zirbel was more than happy with the results of the 2015 event. Zirbel, the fair’s full-time manager, said the five-day affair that concluded at the fairgrounds in Wilmot Aug. 23 hit a sweet spot when it comes to attendance. While well off the last year’s record-setting figure that topped 100,000, this year’s mark of 85,000 is about average for most recent years. “We hit that right in the middle,” Zirbel said. Attendance got off to a sluggish start with less-thanstellar weather the first two days, but rebounded in a big way over the weekend. “Saturday and Sunday, you couldn’t ask for better weather,” she said. As usual, the motorsports events drew the biggest crowds. Sunday’s two demolition derbies and the IRA Outlaw Sprint car races on Friday and Saturday were among the most popular events at the fair, Zirbel said. She also said this year’s new midway provider – Alpine Amusement Co. of Naperville, Ill. – received good reviews from fairgoers. However, amid the spinning rides, funnel cakes and roaring engines, the animal displays and auctions again

I’m really pleased with the overall fair itself and can’t say enough about the volunteers who give so much to make it happen.” – Denise Zirbel, County Fair manager
proved to be the heart of the county fair, Zirbel said. “We had great participation and people were very supportive of the 4-H kids,” she said. “We’re always so far over market value (in the animal auctions). It’s amazing the way the community supports the kids.” For Zirbel, her first year at the helm was rewarding. “I’m really pleased with the overall fair itself and can’t say enough about the volunteers who give so much to make it happen,” she said. Zirbel is looking forward to taking a long look at this year’s fair with an eye toward improving it in 2016. “I had 12 weeks to prepare for this one and I have 12 months to prepare for the next,” she said. “I’m looking forward to reviewing all aspects.”

Each day comes bearing gifts. But not in the way you might think. I wake in anticipation of the presents they have left for me this time. “They” are not leprechauns or Santa’s elves. The gifts in question come from my kids. Yeah, I find it hard to believe myself. When I enter the kitchen each morning, I’m guaranteed at least one cardboard pizza round left over from the last night’s midnight feast. Pizza cardboard is much too valuable to toss in the trash, if they could locate the trash (which I’m not sure they could). They also leave me charred pizza nibbles at the bottom of the oven. In a word: yum. Almost as steadfast as the cardboard are errant ramen noodles, which are

Also in the sink I find hardened, congealed and coagulated food scraps on plates and forks. It’s like a little guessing game. What scrumptious morsels did they partake in during the wee hours of the morning? They’ve also taken to baking cakes. At midnight. They eat the whole thing because they know I wouldn’t want to
be tempted by cake first thing in the morning. My needs are their priority and as a mom my pride surges. They do allow me to clean the cake pan, which I guess is their way of sharing the experience with me. The floor – oh the floor! It is probably the best part. Cheese puffs, candy bits, grapes, potato chip crumbs and even sticky red juice globs all scatter across the floor in a random pattern that demonstrates their artistic talents. It is a wealth of sticky, crunchy foodstuff and it is mine to deal with. All mine. Candy wrappers stuffed behind the computer or TV are like little treasure hunting finds. Bright and lively all yellow and orange, they practically scream joy – either that or

Them leaving me their extra drinks is thoughtful and generous. They drink less so I can access their leftovers. How sweet is that? Despite their inability to find the garbage for most things, I can always rest assured it will be heaping and waiting to be emptied. Sometimes one of them makes late night coffee (the best time for coffee so I’m told) and most (but never all) of the coffee grounds are dispensed to the trash. The rest wait for me on the floor next to the garbage can. I give thanks it was a near miss. They

I suppose I’m to blame for these gifts. Don’t be too hard on me. Summer is short – as is life. Sometimes you have to pick your battles (and dirty socks) and learn to laugh at the rest of it. Or at least know they didn’t go to bed hungry, see the glass as half full and (of course) let them eat cake. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. Sometimes, as I am hefting a chair or table from one place to another, I fantasize about what they were doing and how much fun they were having while rearranging the living room. Dirty socks, crumpled T-shirts and discarded shorts only ensure my job stability as the prestigious CLO (Chief Laundry Organizer) of the household. The same goes for damp towels, which may be located in any room, as long as they are heaped on the floor. Towel

Woman suffering in poverty clings to cat’s companionship food pantry at the W.C. Food Pantry and provided funding for spay and neuter surgeries to our clients. They know the importance of keeping these pets out of our shelters and safe in their homes. For families struggling with job loss, unexpected medical bills, eviction, the additional stress of having to face giving up your pet due to your inability to buy pet food should not have to be considered. The Time Is Now to Help, along with all of you is doing its part to make sure our fellow Americans are not evicted and homeless. The Petco Foundation is doing its part to make sure our fellow American pets are not evicted or homeless either. Please consider helping our pet food program at the “Fill a Truck Load” event from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Lake Geneva Petco store, 200 N. Edwards Blvd. Be sure to tell the cashier the donation is for the truck load fundraiser for our four legged family members. All food donated will be used to help our local efforts to end pet hunger and homelessness. Poverty stricken pets and their families really need our help. And for those of you who are looking to add a new pet family member, there will be several rescue groups there with adoptable pets available for you to meet. Consider bringing a new friend home and saving a life. We together really can save one life and change many lives every day. Please remember the Barnabas $61,000 matching grant will match every donation you make at this time, doubling your assistance to the poverty stricken. about their transportation problems. I didn’t want to leave them without making sure they could get to the food pantry and doctor’s visits if needed. The woman visitor told me she had a car but it was in need of tires and service. I went to take a look at the car while the women stayed inside the now-cool apartment. After looking over the car I could see these women were traveling on dangerously worn tires and after starting the car heard a few things that needed repair. I called to arrange these repairs immediately. This transportation assistance would help these women maintain their independence. When I went back inside the women were both sitting next to each other with the cat between them. When I commented on this they said, “This is how we always sit when my friend is here. Frosty loves her too.” I could see the cat was a companion for more than just one of our lonely seniors. Several weeks later I paid another visit. I now found our senior woman with a repaired smile, new glasses and much happier thanks to all of you. She told me to share with all of you what a blessing these changes have made in her life. “I was all alone and I wouldn’t admit it to anyone, but I was scared. I had never had my utilities shut off before. I didn’t even realize how devastating that would be until it happened. Now we are all happy and so comfortable thanks to everyone at The Time Is Now to Help. I also am so thankful for the cat food I am able to get at the food pantry. I am glad I can share some of my food but I don’t have to skip meals to keep my furry friend.” I was thankful we were able to help this senior woman not only restore her utilities and improve her health, but also allow her to keep her pet, her animal companion that means so much to her. This is important in our work too as I see the magical way pets can help many of our lonely seniors, children and handicapped people every day. The Time Is Now to Help has been working with the Petco Foundation and the Lake Geneva Petco store for the past six years in helping our local pet families that are struggling in poverty. They have supported both the pet

Dear readers, Being the son of a mother who brought home every stray pet that crossed her path, I could understand this lonely senior bringing this cat in out of the cold and giving it a home, even when she was having a hard time financially. It is a selfless thing to give a homeless pet a home. Now I wanted to pay a visit to this senior woman to make sure she didn’t become homeless as well. I went to visit the senior woman at the address listed by the concerned neighbor. I had the concerned neighbor call the woman and tell her about the letter she had written to The Time Is Now to Help in her behalf. I did not want to shock her by having a strange man knocking on her door. When I did arrive at her door, I waited a few minutes for the senior woman to answer. I know it can take our seniors a while to get up and get to the door, especially if they are using walkers or canes. In a few moments the door was opened by a petite silver-haired woman with thick glasses. She peered at me through the glasses, still squinting. After I introduced myself and held up my identification so she could read it, she said, “So you’re that man my neighbor was telling me about. I wasn’t sure if I believed her until she brought over a few newspapers and showed me your picture and column.” Then with a smile she added, “You look much better in person. That picture in the newspaper doesn’t do you any favors.” I laughed with her and was glad to see she had a sense of humor. She showed me into her quiet, dark, hot apartment. The utilities were indeed disconnected. I asked the senior woman how long she had been living without lights and air-conditioning. She looked ashamed as she told me she had been living like that for a few days. The first thing we would do was

Dear W.C., I am not looking for help for myself but for one of my neighbors. I know she is having a hard time financially. Her utilities have been disconnected and that is grounds for eviction if our landlord finds out. She has no family and few friends other than me and her cat. I stop by to check on her as much as my health allows. I am disabled and use a walker so it is not easy for me to walk around much on my own. I wish I could help her as she is the kindest person I know, but I barely make ends meet each month myself. I know some people would question why she has a cat when she can barely feed herself. I have seen how this woman loves and talks to her cat. It is her only companion for days at a time. She found the cat outside last winter in the freezing cold and gave it a home. Now she tells me she doesn’t know how she lived without a pet for so long and shared with me how lonely she was before the cat moved in. I hope you can help this kind woman. I read about the work you do in the newspaper each week and I know this senior woman really needs your assistance.

Village will pay cost of water patrol Silver Lake agrees to Salem’s terms for fill-in service By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
The Silver Lake Village Board on Aug. 19 approved an agreement with the Town of Salem to provide water patrol on Silver Lake until the end of the 2015 boating season, which is Labor Day weekend. The lone dissenting vote came from Trustee Carolyn Dodge. In 1983, Salem officials gave Silver Lake enforcement authority of the lake, even though the entire lake is within Salem boundaries. Since then, the Village of Silver Lake has provided water patrol on the lake. This year, Silver Lake’s police force was disbanded and the village has contracted with Kenosha County Sheriff Department for policing but did not include water patrol. Silver Lake intended to maintain water patrol this summer but ran out of available water patrol officers. Even when a municipality plans to hire an individual who is working for another law enforcement agency, the state requires that every water patrol officer, full and part time, be put though a background check, a physical and drug testing prior to being hired. Village Trustee Pat Dunn said he realized the village did not have sufficient funds or time to find more water patrol officers for the rest of the 2015 season, so he contacted the Salem. Salem agreed to handle the issue until the end of the 2015 season, for a price. Silver Lake board members initially balked at paying for the service, but have since relented. The village will receive a bill for payroll and supply costs minus any financial aid or reimbursement from the Department of Natural Resources for the time Salem will
provide water patrol on Silver Lake. The agreement also allows Salem to use the Silver Lake boat and truck when needed. The agreement also states the town will retain all forfeitures imposed by the Salem Municipal Court or the Kenosha County Circuit Court during the time that Salem is providing water patrol. Salem Administrator Pat Casey said that had this agreement not be put in place, “There may have been no water patrol on Silver Lake except when the DNR was able to come.” Silver Lake Village Hall had already received several complaints from residents regarding unlawful behavior on
Silver Lake when the village was no longer able to provide water patrol. This agreement is a stopgap measure, Casey said, until the village decides its plans for next year. “We have enough personnel to provide 20 hours a week for the rest of the season,” Casey said, “and Salem had Silver Lake covered last weekend even prior to the agreement.” “Next year, we will have to take a more holistic approach.” The Salem Town Board has not yet approved it, but Casey said he did have the board’s approval to create the agreement and did approve of the terms he outlined for them.

cle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, mental confusion, tremors, confusion, paralysis, and coma. Adults older than 50 and those with compromised immune systems are at greater risk of developing central nervous system illness that can be fatal. The department offered these tips to minimize exposure to the virus: • Limit time spent outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. • Apply insect repellant to clothing as well as exposed skin since mosquitoes may bite through clothing. • Make sure window and door screens are in good repair to prevent mosquito entry. • Properly dispose of items that hold water, such as tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, or discarded tires. • Clean roof gutters and downspouts for proper drainage. • Turn over wheelbarrows, wading pools, boats, and canoes when not in use. • Change the water in birdbaths and pet dishes at least every three days. • Clean and chlorinate
swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs; drain water from pool covers. • Trim tall grass, weeds, and vines since mosquitoes use these areas to rest during hot daylight hours. • Landscape to prevent water from pooling in low-lying areas. The state Department of Health Services has monitored the spread of West Nile virus since 2001 among wild birds, horses, mosquitoes, and people. During 2002, the state documented its first human infections and 52 cases were reported that year. During 2012, 57 cases of West Nile virus infection were reported among Wisconsin residents, the highest annual number of cases reported since surveillance began in Wisconsin. Last year, the state recorded six confirmed human cases of West Nile virus. There were no human or bird cases reported in Kenosha County in 2014. West Nile virus infections in humans have been reported from June through October, however, most reported becoming ill with West Nile virus in August and September.

A dead crow recently found in Kenosha County has tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Kenosha County Division of Health. This is the first bird that tested positive for West Nile virus in Kenosha County since surveillance for the mosquito-transmitted virus began May 1, according to health officials. The finding, according to the Division of Health, means residents of the county need to be more vigilant in preventing mosquito bites to avoid exposure to the disease. West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds. About 80 percent who are infected with West Nile virus do not get sick, according to Division of Health officials. Those who do become ill usually experience mild symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle ache, rash, and fatigue. Less than 1 percent of people infected with the virus get seriously ill with symptoms that include high fever, mus-

HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 2, 2015 • 8 Built in 1842, this two-story cream-brick house was the home of John and Brigid McCaffary and the site of her murder. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places because it is associated with historic persons and events of the city. John McCaffary’s execution is among the events that led to the abolition of the death penalty in Wisconsin.

John McCaffary’s remains are buried in Green Ridge Cemetery in an unmarked grave in Potter’s Field. In 2001, the Wisconsin Historical Society erected this historical marker in the area where McCaffary was most likely interred.
Kenosha execution played role in repeal of death penalty Events of 1850s motivated abolitionists to act CORRESPONDENT
The State of Wisconsin became the first state in the union to permanently abolish the death penalty for all crimes in 1853. The state’s first and only execution two years earlier focused the attention of Wisconsin on
Kenosha. John McCaffary, of Kenosha, had the dubious distinction of being the only person executed by the state. McCaffary was a farmer of Irish descent, who immigrated to Wisconsin and made his home in the newly incorporated Town of Kenosha. It was
here that he lived at 5732 13th Court with his wife Brigid, until 1850. The marriage was not considered a happy one as neighbors often heard the couple arguing and breaking household items such as dishes and furniture, according to historic accounts. On the night of July

that he had murdered Brigid. The jury found McCaffary guilty of willful murder and was sentenced by the judge to the first death sentence granted by the newly formed State of Wisconsin. The judge chose the form of death to be death by hanging and the death warrant was signed by Gov. Nelson Dewey. As the day of the execution neared, residents from around the area began to travel to Kenosha prepared to watch the hanging. Various accounts of the time estimated that between 2,000 and 3,000 people gathered for the execution, which was held in front of the Kenosha Courthouse and jail. The hanging did not go as
planned and, as a result, may have hastened efforts to abolish the death penalty. McCaffary did not succumb to death in five minutes as expected, but reportedly suffered for about 20 minutes until he was officially declared dead by a local doctor. He was laid to rest in Green Ridge Cemetery in Kenosha. According to Peter Shaw Johnson, President and Manager of the Kenosha Cemetery Association, operators of Green Ridge Cemetery, McCaffary was buried in a potter’s field plot for the indigent in Green Ridge Cemetery.

23, 1850, the neighbors heard screaming at the McCaffary residence. The sound was so loud that they could not ignore it and went searching for its source. Although the noise had abated by the time they reached the McCaffary residence, they found Brigid McCaffary’s body in a cistern on the grounds of the house. She had been drowned – presumably by her husband, who was immediately arrested and subsequently charged with the first-degree murder of his wife. The trial of John McCaffary began in May 1851 and lasted about 10 days. During the trial, McCaffary denied

Summer camp for military kids offers unique support from a military family live on or near a military base and one or both of their parents are deployed, there are support services in place to help them handle the challenges that come with the life. When those kids don’t live on base and a parent isn’t there, they often feel like they’re all alone in the situation, said Susan Russell, vice-president of community engagement for Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin. “A lot of people don’t know that Easter Seals across the country has been serving veterans since World War II,” Russell said. “The military came to us and asked for help for the kids who don’t live on base. They said, ‘You guys know how to do camp, you’ve been doing it for 80 years; we need help serving the kids who don’t live on base.’” That’s where Camp Yellow Ribbon comes in. The Easter Seals summer camp for kids age 7 to 14 with a parent on active duty in the U.S. military or a veteran. “We focus a lot on getting
them to talk about what they’re going through,” camp respite supervisor Bridget Mangan said. “They build relationships with other kids who are going through the same thing.” Camp – which was held at Camp Edwards on Army Lake in East Troy Aug. 16 to Aug. 20 – gives the kids the chance to have the full summer camp experience. It also offers emotional support and teaches coping skills kids can take advantage of. “Camp acts to provide stress release,” Bob Glowacki, CEO of Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin, said. “It’s a regular overnight camp. The kids went to a Brewers game, tie-dyed T-shirts, built a planter for the camp; they did all the normal camp things.” “We use activities like swimming and rock climbing to teach team building and promote strength and courage,” Mangan said. “The recreation part is to get the kids’ minds off of their problems. It’s a week to give them a break.” This is the first year camp was in East Troy. Before that it was in Oconomowoc.
• Death penalty “The exact location of his grave is unknown as they were not marked, but a historical marker was placed in 2001 by the Wisconsin Historical Society here in the area of his probable grave,” Johnson said. The brutality execution was a sight that many in attendance would never forget and motivated reformers to press forward with the drive to eliminate the death penalty. C. Latham Sholes, editor of the Kenosha News, was among those who fought for the abolition of the death penalty. The death penalty was eliminated on July 10, 1853, by the state Legislature. Some would argue that Rhode Island was the first state to eliminate the death penalty when its legislature passed a law prohibiting capital punishment in 1852. However
“Camp Edwards was a better fit,” Mangan said. “We were looking for more support from camp staff so we could focus on the kids more. The staff here is great. They did so much and made such a difference. Last year my sister was making sandwiches for lunch. This year, the camp staff did everything. “And you can’t beat the grounds. There’s a whole lot more to do here.”
Helping the whole family Siblings Haille, 14, and Chase Johnson, 11, of Greenfield, have been attending the camp for the last four years. Haille and Chase’s dad is in the U.S. Army and had been deployed for 326 days as of Aug. 20. Mom Tara Johnson said her husband, Capt. Nathan Johnson, was coming home Aug. 22, but the kids didn’t know it. She said the original plan was for him to come to Camp Yellow Ribbon on Family Day (Aug. 20) and surprise the children. He wasn’t able to get home by then, so the surprise

this was a temporary D I S PabolishL AY ment of the death penalty and they reinstated it in 1872 but it could only be applied if a person committed a capital offense while serving a life sentence. No one was executed under this newer law. The State of Michigan had abolished the death penalty for all crimes except treason in 1847. For the most part, citizens of Wisconsin were content with the death penalty prohibition until the 1990s when there was a push to reinstate it after the capture of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and the full extent of his crimes became known. At that time outraged citizens and some politicians began calling for the return of capital punishment. With the death of Dahmer in 1994 while incarcerated and decreased murder rates in the
was moved to Saturday at The Rave during the Craig Campbell concert the family was attending. Tara said communication with her husband during this last deployment – in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba – was not as consistent as it had been in the past and that posed even more difficulties for the family. “There was no WiFi or Skype, just a couple of phone calls. It was better when he was in Iraq than when he was in Cuba,” she said. “But it’s finally over – it’s been a long year, especially for the kids. I think it’s more difficult for them because we don’t live on base. When you’re on base, everybody’s husband is gone; here it’s harder for the kids, because none of their friends understand. “The friends they make at camp are friends for life,” she continued. “They also go to Camp Corral every summer, but this is their favorite camp.” Tara said her son, Chase, struggled the most during his

camps over the years. “The hardest part is leaving my friends,” Haille said. “We keep in touch with Facebook and Instagram all through the year, though.” Her mother added, “Social media really helps to keep track of people you lose over a military career. It’s wonderful.” Russell said it’s stories such as this that touch her heart and make her realize just how much the kids need something like Camp Yellow Ribbon. “I remember our first year, one of the TV stations came out to do an interview and there was the 10-yearold girl who said she was stressed because she felt like she had to help out with her brother and help her mom and she talked about how she sometimes just cried worrying about what might happen,” Russell recalled. “No 10-year-old should have to experience that type of worry or responsibility. “It’s a stress we can’t imagine.”

dad’s recent deployment. “I think the hardest thing was the sports,” Tara said. “He’s always been Chase’s wrestling coach and he wasn’t here this time. I had to learn a lot about wrestling. His dad wasn’t around for a lot; he missed his eighth-grade graduation, he missed all the holidays. It was hard.” For Chase, a week filled with physical activity and a chance to be with the friends he’s made over the years really helped. He didn’t even miss his mom. “Well, maybe a little bit,” he admitted. Tara said sending the kids to camp also “gives me a break” and a chance to relax. Haille, who is entering high school, said she was sad that this would be her last year as a camper, but already had plans to volunteer at Camp Corral next year and return to Camp Yellow Ribbon as a volunteer when she is 16. “I love kids and having fun with kids,” she said.
