Five ways to rest, relax and recharge on the water Feeling stressed? Adding water to your summer plans may be one of the best remedies. More than four in five Americans say being around water relaxes them, and 72 percent feel healthier after spending time on the water, according to a 2015 Discover Boating survey by Wakefield Research. With Americans working longer hours, the need to take vacation time is greater than ever. Four in 10 Americans are not using all their paid time off and 81 percent of Americans feel reducing stress levels is a top priority when taking PTO, according to Project: Time Off’s 2015 research by GFK Public Affairs. “Today’s technology can make it difficult to fully disconnect and relax, which is why boating offers a unique solution,” says Carl Blackwell, president of Discover Boating. “Surrounded by water, fresh air and your favorite people makes a boat one of the rare places where you can focus on each other, forget about daily distractions and enjoy the outdoors.” Homes & Design May 2016 Published by Southern Lakes Newspapers LLC 1102 Ann St., Delavan, WI 53115 (262) 728-3411
Whether on vacation or staycation, there are fun, stress-free ways to get on the water. Discover Boating’s insider tips can help anyone get started in fishing, wakesurfing, sailing, personal watercraft and cruising this summer. Take a class Sign up for a boating lesson to hone those powerboating, sailing or watersports skills by mastering the basics while having fun along the way. Find boating classes, training courses and even youth boating programs close to home on DiscoverBoating.com’s education and training section. Join a club Find a boat club near you for a hasslefree and cost-sharing way to access a versatile fleet of boats. Simply pay a monthly fee and book your time online. Most boat clubs take care of docking, cleaning, and maintenance, with members
responsible for fuel. Plus, most offer extensive boater education courses as part of the membership. Share the fun Share the fun and the budget. Fractional ownership programs are similar to boat clubs offering shared access to boats paired with maintenance and education, with a few subtle differences – an annual fee versus monthly dues and assignment of members to a particular boat, similar to a property timeshare instead of a fleet of boats. Another popular “sharing” trend is to go in on a boat with family or friends to share the costs. Try Discover Boating’s boat selector tool to research what boat best fits your budget and lifestyle. Rent a boat Rental options are available on most waterways and provide hourly or daily access to a variety of boat types. Rental outfitters provide tutorials on operating a

boat, share safety instructions and offer suggestions on destinations. Another rental option new to market is peer-to-peer rentals, allowing you to rent someone else’s boat, which usually includes insurance and captains for hire to help you set sail. Charter a trip Explore new waters and experience the boating lifestyle by chartering a boat trip with family or friends. Chartering offers options – bareboat (with no captain) or crewed (with captain and crew) for a few days or weeks long. Pick your preferences and chart your course. Find your way on the water by using Discover Boating’s get on the water interactive tool, just enter your zip code to find rentals, boat clubs and more close to home. If you’re curious about owning a boat, whether new or previously owned, take the next step and research all your options on DiscoverBoating.com.

As time and experience increase, duties can be expanded to include: • Tending and stowing dock lines and fenders; • Raising and lowering the flag, ensign or burgee; • Standing watch; and • Maintaining logbooks and other records. With proper instruction, older children can also operate the radio, read charts, and even take the helm. The best way to get kids to this level is to enroll them in a basic boating safety course. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary has several programs available for children, such as Boating Fun (4 to 9 year olds), and Waypoints (10 to 12 year olds). Children 9 years old and older can take Boating Safely with their parents. Courses are also available through local Power Squadron units, the Red Cross and state boating-law enforcement agencies. Remember not to over-task anyone. Too much may be worse than no responsibility at all, as it may create a dangerous situation. Judge any questionable situation carefully. You don’t need to step in every time your crew has a problem. Unless it’s a potentially dangerous situation that could too easily escalate, let them work it out. Don’t forget to include boat maintenance in your crew’s chores. Fueling, checking fluids and other upkeep items teaches your kids lessons that they can apply outside of boating. If you trailer your boat, your crew can help with trailer/auto connections, checking lights and other transition tasks. FILE PHOTO Lake Living For more information, visit www. Boating, like any family activity, is only a “family” activity if all the members are actually involved. If family members are nothing but hostages to Mom and Dad’s hobby, they’ll quickly lose interest. By assigning kids responsibilities aboard you involve them. Your children will enjoy the boating experience, and build the foundation for what may become a lifelong passion. At the very least they will be less bored. The key is to make them — and the process — important, educational and fun. You’ll probably be surprised at how much pride they take in being part of your crew. Most children above age five can be assigned onboard responsibilities. The key is to make real assignments and give everyone a title (including you and your spouse). You can find lists of navy titles and responsibilities online and in books, which you can then apply to your crew. (The historical nicknames are even more fun.) Take it a step further and write the titles and assignments in a logbook. Make sure that each trip starts with a crew briefing on safety equipment, locations and emergency procedures — every time. This must include the inspection and donning of personal floatation devices. Be clear with your crew that the Captain will always be available for support and assistance with their assigned tasks. You can start individual jobs by allowing the youngest to help with the launch checklist. They can also stow daypacks and provisions and other loose items. Kids with a bit more experience can show guests where fire extinguishers and life jackets are stowed.

FIVE WAYS to improve your outdoor space with RETAINING WALLS When you picture a retaining wall, do you imagine it holding back dirt? That’s the most common use for retaining walls – to address elevation changes and prevent erosion. But concrete segmental retaining wall units are multi-purpose landscaping tools with many more uses. Site planners, engineers, landscape architects, designers, developers and builders have long relied on SRWs to manage sloping properties, provide more usable space, or create stadium seating. Homeowners, too, have discovered retaining walls can be used to create functional outdoor features, says Scott Arnold, manager of Villa Landscapes in St. Paul, Minnesota. “Because segmental retaining walls are both durable and beautiful, landscapers and homeowners can use them to create outdoor seating, raised patios and other features,” says Arnold. “They are the perfect building block to create grill islands, outdoor kitchens and so much more.” Most SRWs are easy to install, which is an important consideration for both landscape professionals and do-it-yourselfers, Arnold said. With retaining wall systems, homeowners and landscapers can create freestanding walls, seat walls, columns, stairs, planters and other features without the need for special units.
Stunning seating
While commercial installers often use SRW units for amphitheater and stadium seating, retaining walls can also be used to create beautiful and durable outdoor seating on a smaller scale, from freestanding walls that double as seating, to two-tiered seat walls.
Ditch the deck
Villa Landscapes designed a raised deck replacement in Minnesota with SRWs from ground level to 42-inches tall to support a paving stone patio. Stairs also built with SRWs connect the patio to the home and yard. The result was a beautiful, spacious and low-maintenance patio with the added advantage of a clear view of the backyard. Willow Creek Paving Stones pavers were used for the patio, surrounded with a contrasting course of river rock that serves as Serving You For Over 50 Years
a visual and physical boundary as well as a space for potted plants.
and seat walls,” says Paul Devine, owner of Devine Design Landscapes. “The pinned system provides a high ratio of weight per square foot of wall face plus extreme flexibility in design. Back-locking
Create curb appeal
Where the yard meets the driveway, retaining walls can be installed as a barrier to protect the lawn from damage caused by tire tracks, plowing or deicing. A tiered arrangement that addresses a slope in the yard adds space for plants and shrubs. Freestanding walls are often built along property lines on corner lots to prevent unwanted traffic from cutting across the yard. Columns created using retaining wall units can be paired with any style home, from classic to contemporary, to add curb appeal. When the front entryway is freshened up with seat walls and other features, the space functions like an oldfashioned porch for visiting and other outdoor activities.
lip walls are not as structurally sound as a pinned system, and hollow blocks do not provide the stability required for large-tiered walls.”

A place for plants
Tree rings and planters built with retaining wall units create a tidy solution around hard to maintain areas, such as shallow-rooted trees and other problem spots. Planters and tree rings can function as usable space for perennials, annuals, vegetables and herbs. SRWs such as VERSA-LOK can be used to create planter walls up to 4-feet tall without the need for geogrid reinforcement. VERSA-Green, a plantable wall system that mimics a hanging garden, provides a stunning living wall solution.
Build a backyard
A homeowner in Apple Valley, Minnesota, nicknamed her unmowable back yard “Billy Goat Hill” because there was no yard space and no safe way to access her garden and fire pit at the top. Plus, erosion was a continual problem. Devine Design Landscapes of Rosemount, Minnesota, solved the problem by excavating for a small back yard and creating tiers of retaining walls with offset stairs, patio landings and seat walls. The result was a small, usable backyard space with safe access to the hilltop and ample planting space for perennials. “With VERSA-LOK, I could use the same block to build the retaining walls, steps

VERSA-LOK SRWs can be used to easily create a curved “couch” seating area that works well as a solution around a patio and fire pit for fall evenings.

TEN WAYS TO GET PREPARED FOR PLANTING When the weather warms, many people’s thoughts turn to how to make sure their yard is in tip-top shape for planting. These 10 tips can help get your garden off to a great start.
Make a plan
First, decide what to plant. One thing you may want to consider is pollinator-attractant plants. Yellow, blue or purple flowers make your garden more appealing to bees. The Pollinator Partnership’s Bee Smart mobile app helps gardeners select the best plants in their area. You can visit FeedABee.com to view pollinator gardens from around the country for inspiration.
Observe the current state of your garden
See how well last year’s planting choices worked out. Consider placement of compatible plants, sunlight, shade and irrigation.
Tidy up
Clean out old plants and weeds from last year’s garden, including the roots. Remove winter mulch or pine straw, too.
Survey the soil
Make sure the soil contains the right nutrients with a soil sampling kit, found at home and garden centers. This analysis will inform your decisions on fertilizing methods. Aerate your soil by breaking it up so air, water and nutrients penetrate the plant roots.
Take care of pests
Check for slugs, snails or aphids, treating any infestations you find.
If it’s broken, fix it
Fix broken structures and gardening tools. Also, treat wood with a preservative
during dry periods to prevent cracks and splitting.
Gather the tools you’ll need and make sure they’re clean
Sharpen and clean your tools, as proper maintenance saves you money and keeps disease from spreading between cuttings.
Planting vegetables?
Consider raised beds. These warm quickly, encourage good irrigation and aeration, and are excellent for difficult soil. In addition, you’ll be able to reach every corner to pull young weeds as they appear.
Prepare a compost pile
Buy or make a compost bin and throw in all your garden waste, grass clippings, paper, wood pruning’s, and fruit and veggie peelings. Turn and aerate it with a garden fork every month.
Label your plants
If you’re growing food, learning to identify plants or sharing a community garden, plant markers are a must. Use the plastic markers that came with the plants or buy or make your own from pebbles, bamboo skewers or broken terracotta pots. Label your plants with the variety name and date you planted it. Below are more resources to help you prepare your garden for the spring ahead. Creating an inviting and relaxing space to watch television or entertain is something many empty nesters have been looking forward to. Don’t be shy about putting your personal stamp on the room.
MAKE THE MOST
FILE PHOTO Lake Living
of an empty nest by creating the ultimate
‘BOOMER CAVE’
The kids are off to college or living in homes of their own, and you have regained a big chunk of your house. It’s time to indulge and transform your home with a space especially designed for you. If you have been dreaming of a “boomer cave” – a place where you can get away to relax, watch TV or read – now is the perfect time to make it a reality. Creating a cozy “getaway” room in your house to relax doesn’t require any special home improvement skills or interior design panache. Simply follow a few steps and get ready to celebrate with friends and family.
STEP 1: Upgrade the TV
The piece de resistance of any empty nester’s boomer cave is the television. It doesn’t matter what program you’re passionate about - a grand television will be the focal point of the room. Whether a gift to yourself or a gift to your partner, a quality TV is a worthwhile investment. Compare options to find the perfect cave-worthy model. LG’s new SUPER UHD TVs feature the latest technologies – including stunning 4K Ultra HD resolution, high dynamic range and a wide color gamut for an impressive picture. Because these are the only TVs that support two formats for HDR content, Dolby Vision and HDR 10, you can rest assured that you’re buying the best. It’s also a Smart TV so
you can stream your favorite content from popular services such as Netflix, Amazon Video and VUDU using LG’s award-winning webOS 3.0 Smart TV platform, and even connect your phone or other wireless device to show off vacation photos and more. Available in 43- to 86-inch screen sizes to suit any size boomer cave.
Beyond decor, a few extras can make the space more enjoyable. A wet bar with a variety of glasses is a nice touch. Built-in charging stations ensure everyone stays connected. Card games add a casino feel. Workout buffs may want to add weights.
STEP 2: Find comfortable furniture
Now that the parents are in boomer-cave heaven, it’s important not to forget about that hard-working grad. Send your love to your favorite young professional by gifting them a sleek, new ultra-lightweight laptop like the LG gram 15. It weighs only 2.16 pounds yet boasts the full screen real estate of a 15-inch laptop, making it easy to travel around campus, or even take from the apartment to the office and back. Equipped with great features including Full HD picture quality – 1920-by-1080 resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio your grad will enjoy an immersive viewing experience and plenty of advanced connectivity options, whether updating a resume or surfing the web. Of course, any time you’re missing your graduate, you can always invite him or her over for some quality time in the cave. Remember, just because it’s a cave meant for parents, doesn’t mean it can’t be the whole family’s new favorite room in the house.
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to a boomer cave, so it’s common to forego the traditional couch and set up the area with multiple reclining chairs. This gives everyone their own space to kick back, relax and enjoy the show. When setting up the room, ensure the arrangement gives each viewer an uninterrupted sightline to the screen but does not block any main walkways and still complements the aesthetic of the room. Many people put chairs about nine feet from a TV, but experiment to find what is best for you.
STEP 3: Add amazing extras
Add personalized elements and the space will truly feel unique. Frame favorite vacation photos, art or sports memorabilia. Add ambient lighting. Paint the walls your favorite colors. When it comes to boomer caves, the sky is the limit.
STEP 4: Don’t forget about the grad

One step further, Dr. Yu Yuan, IEEE senior member and founder of CATE Global and CEO of Motiveware Technology, predicts, “An intelligent machine or robot will soon take over the kitchen as cook, servant and nutritionist.” Yuan is hopeful such changes will make the operation of household appliances easier and more convenient. IEEE experts warn, however, that while all of this is exciting, in order for IoT to reach its full potential, a single communications standard will be needed so that products from different companies can communicate with each other. “If I buy one system, it may not work or synchronize with another system. I could be locked into one system, and that’s a big issue,” says William Webb, IEEE Fellow and head of consulting at Affini and CEO of Weightless SIG. Another concern for the growing smart home industry is security, and the risks are pervasive. A recent “Hackathon” hosted by MIT invited hackers to find security holes of smart home technology. The event reinforced this danger. “There are security concerns in all

While there are still barriers to the widespread adoption of IoT, experts are hopeful that smart home technology will one day soon become fully integrated, improving the way we live. (STATEPOINT)

“Internet of Things (IoT)” technology has many benefits for the future of the home.

If you’ve heard of the “Internet of Things (IoT)” – you know it’s the concept of connecting physical objects to the Internet and each other. While you may already own a few objects enabled by IoT, you can expect this technology to further permeate your life in the future, especially at home. Thanks to consumer demand, smart home offerings are expanding rapidly – from smart refrigerators to smart entertainment systems to smart HVAC systems. Experts at the cutting edge of technology agree that IoT has the potential to completely revolutionize how we interact with appliances and even each other. In the kitchen for example, “You’ll be able to receive alerts that products for day-to-day use are running out and need replacing. You’ll be able to remotely consult your refrigerator or pantry from your phone, tablet or computer,” says Arthur Ziviani, senior member of IEEE,

Get out without bugging out Summertime is fun time. But sometimes outdoor fun brings with it additional health and safety concerns. Bugs have always bugged us, but this year there is a growing concern about the risks associated with mosquitoes and other biting insects. These concerns include not only the potential impacts of getting bitten, but also the risks involved with the insect protection itself. Concerned families are finding that all-natural insect repellents provide the same protection as many chemical DEET-based repellents without the negative effects on individual health and the environment. To make your family’s outdoor fun even better, consider these tips on how to get out without bugging out. • Dress right. Weather permitting – wear long pants, socks, closed shoes and long-sleeved shirts. • Use a porch fan to keep bugs away. • Try burning citronella candles. • Avoid peak mosquito hours. Avoid the hours from dusk to dawn when planning hikes and outdoor fun. • Use an all-natural insect repellent to protect against mosquitoes, ticks, blackflies and gnats. Many plant oils can provide effective and safe protection from biting, stinging pests, including geranium, cedar wood, citronella, peppermint and lemongrass. Look for natural products that are DEET-free. DEET has been shown to cause rashes, skin irritation, numb or burning lips, nausea, headaches and dizziness. Buzz Away Extreme is an all-natural and effective option available in non-aerosol spray and child-friendly towelettes. It is as effective as low-concentration DEET-based products and provides hours of protection from mosquitoes.
An all-natural insect repellent can help your family stay safe from bug bites when playing outside.
