Where the food is real and the people are too Green Grocer keeps things local, simple and delicious by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
When the Bay Centre building on Geneva Street was built over 100 years ago, it is unlikely that its owners considered that in the 21st century it would still be used for a successful business and still continue to
look much as it did when built. More surprising is that some of the features that made it a showcase, such as the brick walls, hardwood floors and tin ceiling, would continue to be present in the building and part of the ambiance that today’s customers enjoy. More than 12 years ago, Jennifer Veith and her business partner Dawn Marie Mancuso opened the Green Grocer at 24 Geneva Street in the Bay Centre building, Williams Bay. Familiar with the building as they are also partners in the Coldwater Spa already located there, they were extremely pleased when the adjoining space became available. They went on to add Jennifer’s
sister, Jane Larson to the ownership team. Interested in health and wellness, they felt that a green grocery adjacent to the spa was the perfect partner. Since both are careful of the types of food they eat, they began plans for a grocery store that provided clean healthy foods, without unnecessary additives. And so, the Green Grocer and Café was born. Rather than trying to update the building they embraced its historic features. A walk into the Green grocer is a walk into a corner grocery store of the past. The hardwood floors show the years of wear as customers made their way through the building. Occasionally you step on a board that offers

The store creates its own tuna, egg and chicken salads in-house and in small batches. The salads are made fresh each day, sometime several times during the day. “We do small batches so that it is as fresh in the morning as it is at 4 p.m. When we run out one of the staff members will whip up another batch. All our employees have to know how to make the chicken, tuna, and egg salad so that they can pitch in to prepare a new batch,” Veith said. “We use local Yuppie Hill eggs which are technically not organic but are clean products and we love their quality.” According to Veith, during the pandemic their business continued to do well as more customers were concerned about eating healthy and safe foods. “We are also seeing people changing their eating habits,” added Veith. “They are looking for healthier foods rather than just going to the nearest fast-food place when they need to pick up something to eat.” More people are becoming vegan and dairy free for environmental and health reasons. Whatever their reasons, many people are adding more vegetables and fresh fruits to their diets and receiving the nutrients they need from these sources. “In addition to vegans there are more people becoming gluten free, again some by medical necessity and others by choice,” said Veith. “So, we have added some products for those who need to remain gluten free. Our soups, which are made in house daily, are gluten free as we do not add any flour or other gluten to thicken them. We also have some gluten-free breads to make sandwiches and the Boar’s Head meats are gluten free and there are no unnecessary additives.” Those on gluten-free diets often have difficulty purchasing the ingredients needed to produce some of their favorite and familiar foods. The Green Grocer carries a large selection of mixes and ingredients to make foods such as pancakes and gluten-free breads. They also carry gluten free breads. This year Green Grocer added Troubadour Bakery items for sale. The breads and other bakery are products of the Collectivo Coffee Company. They are the same high quality as the hand-roasted coffee that Collectivo is known to produce. Located in Milwaukee, Troubadour attempts to source all of its baking materials from local suppliers.

The Green Grocer is well known for its supply of wines. The first display is seen when walking in the front door and various displays are found throughout the store. The wines are not necessarily familiar as a large number of them are unique to the area and come from places such as New Zealand, Europe and California. “Most of the wines we carry come from small wineries that are recommended by our vendor,” Veith said. “For the most part they are not the wines seen in the bigger wine stores. We are not looking to duplicate the larger advertised wines of the bigger stores but to offer our customers a unique wine experience and the ability to discover new varietals that they would not find in the larger stores. We offer both red and white wines, sweet or dry to please the customer.” It seems that the Green Grocer is continuously expanding. The store has a full liquor license so it is possible to come in and enjoy a cocktail or a glass of wine with their lunch. The owners have opened an additional space in the building by cutting through the brick wall and creating a space for a coffee or wine bar, which they share with Steamer’s Coffee, a separately owned business. This year they have added smoothies and juicing which is in the Coffee Bar of Green Grocer. “The juicing started in February after we received many requests. It has been a nice addition to our menu. We also began serving gelato this year. “ The gelato has become a favorite on hot days and is carried in a number of flavors. Some of the gelato flavors are also vegan. Green Grocer customers seem to come from everywhere. According to Veith, they have some local customers who do the majority of their grocery shopping at the store. Others come just for some of their grocery needs or to enjoy a quick and healthy lunch while visiting the area. Some of the visitors to Williams Bay are looking for a quieter, more peaceful stay at the lake than found in the busier City of Lake Geneva. Green Grocer and Café is at 24 W. Geneva Street, Williams Bay. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Safari Lake HAS A Geneva MISSION
by Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
Drive-thru park is dedicated to animal preservation
“Jungle” Jay Christie seemed to always possess an affinity for animals. “I have been in zoos since I was very small, in fact, zoo was the first word I ever learned how to read,” Christie said. With his love of animals, as well as early exposure to zoos, it was only fitting for Christie to enter the zoological field. But he wanted more, and decided to open Safari Lake Geneva in 2016, which offers visitors an experience
unlike a zoo or theme park would. Safari Lake Geneva, a conservation park, allows animals to interact with other animals oftentimes in herds much like they would in their ancestral homelands. “I wanted the animals to roam the entire property, which is the opposite of the normal zoo,” he said. “The animals have much more space to express their natural behaviors. There are dozens of different animals roaming harmoniously.”
Christie said Safari Lake Geneva carries a distinct mission. The goal, he said, is to create a refuge for the world’s diminishing breeds allowing animals to explore multiple acres and confining people to “cages,” specifically their cars. “It is a conservation park, meaning that it was established with its primary mission being to halt extinction of animals in the wild,” he said. Additionally, according to Christie, the park opened to raise

awareness and educate visitors on each animal on the safari. “We do that by providing what I would call an interactive experience,” said Christie, a licensed exhibitor through the United States Department of Agriculture. “We are committed to education and also conservation, so a certain percentage of proceeds here go to save animals.” Animals on the safari include, but are not limited to, alpacas, Arabian camels, Bactrian camels, Brahman cattle, emus, Grant’s Zebras, water buffalo, llamas, a miniature mule, ostrich, plains bison, yak and, most recently, two giraffes. Typically, Christie acquires animals in multiple categories, ranging from rescues, loans from other institutions and donations. Most, if not all, of the animals at Safari Lake Geneva were born in the United States. Safari Lake Geneva, about five miles from downtown Lake Geneva, encompasses 75 total acres. Currently, the safari takes up about 33% of the total acreage, with room for future expansion.
A safari first
The safari adventure park most recently acquisition of giraffes was done as a way to highlight the alarming decline in giraffe populations across Africa, according to Safari staff. Maggie Madden, the park’s director of science and education, said in a news release having giraffes at the safari is a privilege and she believes the newest additions will raise awareness of the animals’ plight. “It’s such a privilege to be able to share these amazing animals with our guests. Wild giraffes have suffered a 40% reduction in their population in the past three decades,” Madden said. “Visitors to the conservation park will not only get to learn about the importance of giraffes to the ecology of the African savanna, but their visit also directly supports the conservation of giraffes in the wild. Not to mention it’s quite humbling to see one so close to you.” Christie has experience with the world’s tallest land animal dating back to 1990 and developed the first interactive giraffe exhibit in Wisconsin at the Racine Zoo almost 20 years ago. “Since that time, a number of zoos have added interactive public giraffe feeding experiences,” Christie said in a news release. Christie, however, went one step further and allows guests to view the animals as part of their drive-thru experience. The giraffes are both male and younger
than 2 years old. Guests, meanwhile, can feed the pair for a nominal fee.
Animal care
The animals are cared for every single day of the year by qualified and experienced staff, according to Christie. Christie added the safari has partnerships with local and state veterinarians for additional care and support. “We also have access to a team of veterinarians 24/7, specifically Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic, (where) there is some expertise in both small and large animals,” he said. “We have occasionally taken cases all of the way to the veterinary school in Madison.”
Guest experience Safari Lake Geneva requires online reservations to visit the conservation park. Christie states the requirement mitigates long lines allowing guests a better experience on the property. Safari Lake Geneva, W1612 Litchfield Road, Lake Geneva operates 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily from May 1 through Oct. 31. The cost of tickets is $19.95 per adult, $12.95 for children and infants are admitted free of charge. Christie, who said guests can drive through multiple times, encourages visitors to budget up to two hours for an ideal experience. For more information, including how to purchase tickets, visit safarilakegeneva.com.

Renaissance revived Bristol Renaissance Faire offers a portal to the past
by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
On July 10 at 10 a.m., the gates to the 16th century town of Bristol opened allowing visitors from the 21st century to step into the past. While it was a gray overcast day with intermittent drizzle, it did not stop the hundreds of early morning visitors who arrived in time to be among the first to be immersed into Bristol’s past on this the first day of the Renaissance Faire. “This year, visitors to Bristol are anxious to return after the 2020 absence of the event due to COVID,” shared Julie McMillin, Social Media Director of Bristol Renaissance Faire. “We are opening this year following all the current COVID recommendations to keep our Bristol family and friends safe. This year we will focus on kindness with our visitors and our cast as everyone can use some kindness.” According to McMillin, some events
are not being held at the beginning of this season, but may be added later depending on COVID regulations or resurgence. One such event is the parade but that doesn’t mean that the Queen may not be on site. Visitors may just have to search for her as she pops in and out of various events in the city, sometimes in disguise. While all the residents of this town are dressed in the clothing of the day as befits their station in life, many of the visitors also come attired in the costumes of the time and thus become not just a visitor but part of this community. Often it is difficult to distinguish the visitors from the cast.
Step back in time
Dress in the late 1500s, unlike today, had definite rules dependent on both sex and social status. Women had to have their heads covered and their dress had to cover their ankles when in public. Upper class men dressed flamboyantly in leggings and
a tunic-style top. They also carried their sword for self- protection and the protection of their family. They, too, tended to cover their heads with a decorative hat. As you enter the Bristol Renaissance Faire the sound of music permeates the air. There are a number of musicians playing in the Town Square and more formal musical productions on one or more of the professional stages scattered throughout the grounds. After being closed last year due to the pandemic, the faire opened this year with as many of the popular activities as it was able to conduct safely and with some new activities. While the new features will be implemented slowly, some are already in place. Several new musical acts including Troll Moss – two women who enjoy performing Irish and Celtic songs – can be found performing in Bristol. A special event this year will be the opening of the Escape Room. Escape

rooms have become popular throughout the country but this is an Escape Room with a twist. While locking a large group of people in an enclosed room is not following COVID rules, the Escape Room here will be reversed. In the Renaissance Faire’s version of the escape room, it is the head master who is confined in the school and the players try to break into the room to free him.
Food at the faire
The food areas are easily found behind the lines that form in front of the various booths. Whether savory treats or delicious sweets are your favorite, there are enough choices that make a decision difficult. A variety of traditional English foods including portabella mushroom dishes, shepherd’s pie, the famous extra-large turkey drumstick, fish and chips, and large beef ribs will satisfy most tastes. But save room for dessert. We would recommend splitting items with a friend so that you are able to taste more of these charming English foods. The sweet choices, including the beignets heaped with powdered sugar and the crepes covered in ice cream are not for the faint of heart. The favorite place to gather is back at the jousting ring where Knights gather seated on their favorite steed ready to perform for the queen. The knights display a variety of skills and joust with each other to be rewarded by the queen. The cheers of the audience as they encourage their favorite knight resound in the air. The last knight who remains on his steed becomes the top knight of the queen’s brigade, an honor they all try to achieve. There are three performances daily of different jousts, at noon, 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. “Many of our performers actually receive college credit for their work here,” said McMillin. “They spend 48 hours of classroom instruction and additional rehearsal time and at

Boredom banished
It is difficult for anyone to be bored at the faire. There are children’s sections, which include a variety of games, rides and activities. Shopping for jewelry, medieval weapons and clothing of the era can be found throughout the faire. Climbing the tower is a difficult feat, but one that is enjoyed by many. There is also a zip line for a trip across Lake Elizabeth. Renquest is an interactive theatrical gaming experience that appeals to many of the visitors. It offers players a chance to experience the living world of the Bristol Renaissance Faire through the completion of quests, honing of skills and defeating evil villains. Visit Renfair.com for cost and appropriate ages for participation. The Bristol Renaissance Faire offers a variety of activities designed to entertain every family member on the 30-acre grounds. You may find that a return visit to the faire will be needed to fit it all in. The Bristol Renaissance Faire is located off Interstate 94 at the Illinois/Wisconsin State line. Exit at Russell Road if heading north and at the Pleasant Prairie exit if driving south. The Faire is open Saturdays and Sundays from June 10 to Sept. 6. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The final day for the season will

COUNTY FAIR RETURNS IN FULL FORCE FOR 2021 by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
The 172nd Annual Walworth County Fair will be held at the Walworth County Fairgrounds, 411 E. Court St., Elkhorn, from Wednesday, Sept. 1 through Labor Day, Sept. 6. And while most people eagerly anticipate the annual tradition, this year the fair will be extra special because of the lack of events in 2020. “Because of the COVID pandemic, the 2020 fair was limited to the kid’s animal sale,” said Larry Gaffey, Walworth County Fairgrounds General Manager. A major change will also take place at the fair this year, according to Gaffey. “The Walworth County Agricultural Society who are the owners of the fairgrounds, polled their members and voted to allow the serving of beer and wine
at the fair for the first time in its 171 year history,” he said. “We will be serving wine and beer. Visitors to the fair will be able to purchase their drinks and walk around the fairgrounds with them in hand. The exception will be that alcoholic drinks will not be allowed in the exhibit areas or in the barn.” This year the theme of the Walworth County Fair is “Jam Packed Fun in 2021.” Visitors to the largest county fair in Wisconsin will be able to explore almost 100 acres of Fair activities.
Music headliners
Music has always filled the air and this year will be no different. The fair planners have done their best to bring a variety of musical acts to perform. On Saturday Sept. 4, country singer Justin Moore will appear SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

Since the 171st fair was so limited last year, people are ready to return to a full slate of activities where families and friends can enjoy all the fair has to offer.
Fair showcase
The fair is a favorite time for young people who are interested in showcasing projects that they have worked on either through group activities or on their own. “In 2019 the last year that we had a full Fair, 84% of 4-H Club members in the area participated. For 2021 that percentage would suggest about 515 youth will be showcasing their 4-H project work in the Junior Show competitions,” said Deborah Harris, 4-H Youth Development Educator, and Associate Professor, Department of Extension University of Wisconsin. “Many of the youth will show in multiple exhibit classes.” 4-H members are not the only participants in the competitions. Members of the FFA and independent groups also compete with their projects. The contests range from food preparation such as canning, gardening, baking, and flowers, to cake decorating, team building skills, and the traditional animal and cattle raising – with each student hoping his or her project will be the Grand Champion. According to Harris, the participants not only learn how to complete a project but when they deal with judges face to face, they learn to share the exhibits they have created and the things they learned in the process. They also receive advice from the judges that can help them with their future projects and learn to build their communication and interview skills.

“This year there is a new competition which will give the winner $5,000. The prize is not a scholarship and has no strings attached to it. It can be used for anything the winner chooses,” Gaffey said. “The event is the Perfect Pickle Pucker Bowl sponsored by Frank’s Piggly Wiggly in East Troy. To enter a team of one adult (18 or older) and one youth (9 to 17 years old) will enter two Mason jars of homemade pickles that they have prepared. pickle judges. Organizers anticipate there could be 600 or more entries. For many, the animal competitions are synonymous with county fairs and 4-H and FFA activities. The crowning of the Grand Champion is the highlight for those who have raised their animals through the months. This family friendly festival offers many activities to keep children busy. These include the award-winning Barnyard Adventure Educational Area with a touchless tour with learning stations. A stop in the butterfly barn is also a favorite of children. While there, they will learn about the butterfly, its unique life cycle and its foods of choice. The butterfly barn holds about 250 butterflies, which they stock with the caterpillars in the spring, and allow them to go through their life cycle. Two new activities this year are the Ninja event and Nature Nick’s Animal Adventure for children to enjoy. There are also the traditional horse shows and kids’ pedal tractor pull.
Rides and food at the fair
It would not be a festive fair without the carnival rides and attractions. Will the favorite ride be the tall Ferris wheel or the carousel or perhaps a new and more thrilling ride? For many eating their way through the fair is their way of enjoying the day. From the traditional hamburgers, hot dogs, pork sandwiches, and bratwurst to the popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream and soft drinks, there seems to be no end of food choices and by the end of the day everyone will be too full to even consider more food. Camping on the grounds is another way to enjoy the fair. Many visitors come for the entire Fair and rent one of the campsites where they stay in their tent, motor home, or travel trailer. It is perfect for getting a head start on activities the next morning. For many families spending the last week of summer attending the fair during the day and camping out at night has become a tradition, one their children will remember forever. The campsites have water and an electric hookup, a nearby picnic shelter, and facilities. While it is too late for this year, it is not too early to plan for next season. Visit walworthcountyfair.com to download an application. Entry to the Fair is $10 for adults, ($8 for seniors Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) and $5 for children. Children under 4 years of age are admitted free. Season passes can be purchased for $30 for adults and $15 for children but they must be purchased by Aug. 6. As always there is no charge for parking. Contact the Walworth County Fair for more information at 411 Court Street, Elkhorn. www.walworthcountyfair.com or by phone at 262-723-3228.

Lakeland has been caring for animals for 53 years Non-profit organization operates boutique to help raise funds by Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER
The Lakeland Animal Welfare Society Inc., a non-profit organization, was founded in 1968 by nine people who decided they could no longer accept the lack of care for homeless animals in Walworth County. Their original mission was “to be dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals and to providing relief for animals that are suffering.” In 1978, the Lakeland Animal Shelter was built and since that time, has seen more than 60,000 homeless animals pass through its doors, according to the organization. The shelter’s mission statement was updated to adequately represent the fact that the shelter’s “legacy and our ongoing work enrich the lives of both people and animals throughout our community.” While it’s a no-kill shelter – animals are only euthanized if they are too sick to be treated or too aggressive to be suitable for adoption and rejects euthanasia as a means of population control – shelter representatives believe use of the terms ‘kill’ and ‘no-kill’ are neither constructive for animal care agencies or informative for the public. “(They) can actually be damaging to the humane animal movement as a whole. We therefore resist being labeled in this way,” the organization states. Annually, Lakeland Animal Shelter accepts more than 3,000 stray or neglected animals and staff do not limit the intake based on health, temperament or age. “Each of these animals is treated with respect, kindness and compassion throughout their stay with us which can range for one week to more than a year in some cases,” it states. In addition to there not being a time limit on how long it houses and cares for each animal, Lakeland’s practices are consistent with the belief that each animal in its care deserves a chance be adopted into a new home. This belief does not simply apply to those animals that are healthy and of acceptable temperament upon intake, according to the organization. “We go to great lengths to rehabilitate animals that we receive that are, or become… unhealthy, sick or of unacceptable temperament into animals that

are healthy and of appropriate temperament for the adoptive home to which they are going,” it states. Services Lakeland Animal Shelter provides includes the following: care and intake of stray, abandoned and unwanted animals; animal cruelty and neglect investigation; adoption placement services for unclaimed and unwanted pets; animal rescue assistance to local law enforcement agencies; and education services on the subject of humane animal care.
Volunteers are vital
Volunteers play a critical role at the Lakeland Animal Shelter. “Without our volunteers, we would never be able to provide the current level of programs and services to assist the animals and the community,” the organization states. Below are some of the many volunteer opportunities available at the shelter: SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
• Dog walking – get some exercise and help four-legged friends do the same. “Our dog walkers provide exercise and mental stimulation to each of our ready for adoption dogs on our five-acre land,” the shelter’s website states. The property is also equipped with three smaller pen areas for “drop the leash” time, or its fenced in pastures for some “off leash” time for those dogs that won’t jump the fence. Dog walkers must be willing to learn and use commands from the Bright Futures Obedience class. Training is set up with the volunteer coordinator or a current, experienced dog walker; • Cat room monitor – stay indoors and spend time with a furry, feline friend. Volunteers provide supervision and assistance to potential adopters while spending time with the cats and maintaining the cleanliness of the cat room. Must be at least 18 years of age however, there are cat room monitoring assistant volunteer

positions for those younger than 18; • Animal-assisted therapy allows volunteers the unique opportunity to provide a beneficial service to both animals and people. The therapy is increasingly used to boost the mood and morale of those in resident care facilities. By bringing a shelter dog or cat to visit one of these facilities, volunteers can see that people from diverse backgrounds – and facing a wide range of physical, emotional, and psychological struggles – find not only comfort, but also growth and healing through animal-assisted therapy. “The premise is simple: the bond between humans and animals reaches beyond words, and an animal’s presence can offer a powerful level of comfort and companionship that is unconditional and runs very deep,” according to the website; • Outreach team – one of the best ways to increase awareness about the needs of homeless animals in the community is by joining the shelter’s outreach team. Volunteers are able to participate in this program by bringing adoptable animals to various locations throughout the community to increase exposure to those who may not be aware of them; • Bright Futures training and obedience – be an integral part of helping homeless dogs find new homes. In this program, volunteers are able to work a specially designed, six-week obedience course for shelter dogs as instructed by a professional trainer. The volunteer dog handlers work with dogs in the shelter to correct behavioral or social issues, as well as working on basic obedience commands. This position does require an understanding of canine behavior and confidence in working with shy, scared, or abused dogs. For more information about becoming a volunteer, visit the website and complete and submit the Volunteer Profile form or contact the coordinator by emailing volunteer.las@ gmail.com.

Eva came to the shelter as a stray in mid-2021. She had been wandering in the Kettle Moraine State Forest until she made her way to the road where she was rescued. Eva was in rough shape, according to shelter staff, so small meals were started to help her gain weight back; Droplet, a 2-month-old kitten, is an example of the type of animals available at Lakeland Animal Shelter. Adopt an animal
Lakeland animal shelter often has 100 or more animals – mostly cats, kittens and dogs – listed as available for adoption. The animals available are constantly changing so it’s advised to keep an eye on the website and follow the shelter’s Facebook page where adoptable animals are often profiled. Those interested in adopting are asked to fill out an Adopter Profile in advance and are reminded that currently, appointments are required to see an animal.
Relying on donations
More than 70% of its annual funding to support the animals, programs and services at the shelter comes from private donors. “Without this support, we would no longer be able to provide this quality care to the homeless animals of our community,” the organization states. There are numerous options for donating including operation rescue, paying down the mortgage, the capital campaign and planned giving. For the bargain shoppers, there is the 9Lives Boutique, a resale store owned and operated by Lakeland Animal Shelter since 2007. All merchandise is donated and all profits support the animal shelter. The store is at 835 Geneva St., Lake Geneva. The website contains lists of items the shelter is in need of – ongoing and urgent – as well as stores in the area where donations can be dropped off. Lakeland Animal Shelter is at 3615 State Road 67, Delavan. Shelter hours are noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. For more information, call 262-723-1000, visit lakelandanimalshelter. org or follow the shelter on Facebook. 30
