FILE PHOTO Spirit of Geneva Lakes
A brief history of skiing Millions of people flock to snow-covered hills and mountains each year to experience the thrill of skiing. Resort towns cater to men, women and children who enjoy cascading along the fresh powder to test their skills on the slopes. Skiing is no longer relegated only to those resorts that have fresh snow. Resorts with the ability to manufacture snow can now cater to skiers regardless of the weather. Skiing can trace its origins to what is now Norway and Sweden. Cave paintings dating back to 5000 B.C. illustrate a skier with one pole in the Nordland region of Norway, while remnants of a primitive ski were found in Hoting, Sweden. The term “ski” was actually derived from the Norse word “skio,” meaning “split piece of wood.” It is generally believed skiing evolved from snowshoeing, and the ski poles were developed from the walking sticks snowshoers used for balance. Skiing was initially a method of efficient transportation over the snow. The first skis were likely similar to the cross-country skis used today. Skiing as a sport came much later, and it wasn’t until the mid- to late-19th century that downhill skiing developed. Various engineers created bindings that enabled skiers to ski without the risk of losing their skis. Sondre Norheim of Norway is credited as one of the first developers of a downhill ski that enabled him to win the first Norwegian downhill competition. Mathias Zdarsky and Hannes Schneider were two other innovators that made subtle changes to Norheim’s designs, developing more modern skis and techniques. Skiing became more competitive when the first slalom races took place in 1921 in Switzerland. Skiing was later included as a sport at the 1924 Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix, France, where ski jumping and cross-country skiing were introduced as events. Jacob Tullin Thams of Norway was the first Olympic ski jumping champion. The silver medal was awarded to Narve Bonna of Norway and the bronze went to (METRO CREATIVE) Anders Haugen of the United States. SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

Nostalgia the secret to barbershop’s success, owner says
by Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER
It was a little more than a year ago when single mother of three, Diane Lies, decided she wanted to open a barbershop. The 45-year-old licensed barber and cosmetologist from Walworth said she hadn’t cut hair in a couple of years, but wanted to get back into it because she saw how the industry was fading. “I saw the barbers getting older. They were retiring. They were dying off. I wanted to make sure it was still available,” Lies said. Lies, who had mentored under Delavan SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
barber Ron Tesch at Ron’s Barber Shop about five years ago, has been a barber/ cosmetologist for 24 years and said she didn’t want to see the loss of something so dear to her. “It’s such a nostalgic thing,” she said. “It’s something passed down from generation to generation and it’s disappearing and I wanted to change that.” Lies said it wasn’t long after she made the decision to open a new barbershop that one of her friends suggested she consider East Troy for the location. Not long after that, another friend sent her a picture of the Barr Building

“
Every one gets the full service. I have the hot towels, give them massaging shampoos, a neck massage, it’s all about helping them relax – it’s an experience.” – BARBER DIANE LIES
on the downtown square. The Barr Building was rebuilt in 2014 after the former barbershop and apartments were heavily damaged in an April 26, 2013, fire which destroyed the corner building at 2877 Main St. “It happened so fast,” Lies said. “One day I said ‘I’m going to open a barbershop’ and three months later I was here. “After losing the barbershop on the square, there was a need for one here,” she continued. “It’s a great little space right on the square. It’s so easy and convenient.”
Lies said there wasn’t much down time from when she set up the shop and opened the door until the clients began filling her books. “I had maybe one to two weeks where it was a little slow, but after that it just took off,” she said. In the 10 months since The Shave Shop opened, Lies went from having no clientele to having more than 700 customers who frequent her establishment. “I’ve been so blessed,” she said. “I’m so happy I chose East Troy. When they lost

their barber there was a hole, when that pole started turning outside, they were so happy I was here.” Lies said she had a lot of clients in the area, but she also had many clients who travel quite a distance to come to her shop. “I have clients from Kenosha, Milwaukee, Clinton – I have one woman who drives five hours to come here,” she said. The Shave Shop serves women and children, too. And while Lies doesn’t have many women on the books, she does see

quite a few children. “I have grandpas right down to the grandkids in families,” she said. “They like the nostalgia of it. They remember going to the barber with their dad or grandpa and they want to have that.” Lies said she thinks one of the driving factors in her success is that people nowadays are looking for ways to unwind and relax. They want to take time away from electronic devices and remember the uncomplicated days of their childhood. “I schedule a full half hour for each of my clients so they don’t feel rushed,” she said. “I think sometimes they get uncomfortable when others are in the shop with them and I want them to have this time to themselves. “Every one gets the full service,” she continued. “I have the hot towels, give them massaging shampoos, a neck massage, it’s all about helping them relax – it’s an experience.” Lies said she wants everyone who comes through her doors to know her shop is a place where they can slow down, disconnect and just relax for a while. “When you can take the time with them, you get to know every bit of them, you become part of their lives.”

And Lies, who runs the shop by herself, said as much as she gives her clients, they give her back so much more. “They take care of me, and I’m so grateful for it. They bring me gifts like mustache-shaped earrings and old-fashioned razors to display. One customer even gave me an iPad,” she said. “Everyone asks if I’m going to add on another chair and barber and I tell them no. I’m not here to get rich; I’m here to be happy. And I am – so happy. “I have a sign in my shop that reads, Enter as Strangers – Leave as Friends, and it’s so true. I care about them so much. I love learning about their lives. I love my job.” The Shave Shop is at 2885 Main St. on the downtown square in East Troy. With the packing away of the last of the Christmas ornaments and other holiday decorations, the calendar turns to a new year. As the year 2016 is embraced there is a realization that the holiday festivities have left their mark. We have enjoyed too much rich food and special holiday treats with little time for exercise, or even restful sleep. Coupled with the dryness of winter, even one’s skin cries for moisture and begs for some pampering. We are certainly ready for a change. At this time people dream of relaxing on a beach in Hawaii or on a Caribbean island where they can recharge and enjoy the warm sunshine and prepare to tackle this new year. Unfortunately for most people the budget after the Christmas buying season has usually been depleted to the point that these options are not possible and warm tropical breezes remain a dream in

the midst of a Midwestern winter. So instead, the usual New Year’s resolutions are made. We will eat healthier, lose that extra weight, exercise regularly, and make time for adequate sleep. Unfortunately for most people who attempt these changes by themselves, they last for a few weeks and once again life interferes. It is not long before one succumbs to the fast food lunch, skips the daily workout and that promised bedtime doesn’t happen because there is always one more thing to do. But there is hope. Just east of Lake Geneva in the town
of Salem, sharing a remodeled farmhouse on the Breezy Hill Nursery property at Highway 50 and 288th Avenue are two separate and synergistic businesses – Wild Roots Hair Salon and Studio and Turning Leaf Acupuncture. While each business is distinct and separate they do have a somewhat symbiotic relationship, working together to promote a holistic approach to health and beauty.

friends since kindergarten and have shared their interest in good health. So it is not surprising that after completing their education in their chosen fields – both in various aspects of health and fitness – they would open their businesses together and each business would complement the other. Schmaling and Parfrey began their businesses in 2013. Today the remodeled farmhouse does not have the look of a centuries-old home, but of a cozy, friendly space with clean lines. Minimal accents are enough to make the space feel comfortable and not crowded. The small waiting room has inviting seating allowing customers to relax as they wait for their appointment – perhaps enjoying a cup of tea. A feeling of calmness pervades the studio. Schmaling and Parfrey are friendly and welcoming and willing to share their vision of the work they do. While Parfrey focuses on acupuncture to relieve pain and stress and Schmaling encourages exercise and outward beauty, they each shared their thoughts on providing a healthy environment to help each person look and feel his or her best. “When you look good, you feel good,” Schmaling said. The reverse is also true that when you feel good, you make an effort to look good. “When you are healthy inside, you view yourself as more beautiful on the outside,” Parfrey added. Their job, as they see it, is to help all their clients become healthier inside and to share their outer beauty. They are strong believers in a holistic way of life and work to help each client develop a strong and positive body-mind connection.

Parfrey of Turning Leaf Acupuncture has been certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and is licensed by the State of Wisconsin. She has an undergraduate degree in botany, which gives her insight into the proper use of the herbs associated with treatment. Her master’s degree in acupuncture was obtained at Northwestern Health Sciences in Bloomington, Minn. Acupuncture is a tried-and-true treatment that has been around for thousands of years. It was first practiced by the Chinese but has evolved into today’s holistic medical practices. The acupuncturist will begin with a history of your health, just as any medical doctor would, to properly diagnose problems. “While many people are aware of the use of acupuncture for the relief of chronic pain, there are many more conditions that will improve with acupuncture,” Parfrey said. “Depression, anxiety, and stress, are able to be relieved. Many patients have used acupuncture to quit smoking.” She went on to explain that there are
17
many other medical conditions that can be improved with acupuncture. So what exactly does the acupuncturist do? Anywhere from two to 20 fine-tipped needles are inserted into the skin. Usually it is not a painful procedure although there may be a temporary feeling of numbness, heaviness or tingling at the site. Aromatherapy is used during each acupuncture session. It is important to relax and the aromatherapy often aids the client in becoming relaxed. The use of the very fine needles is to enhance the flow of Qi through the body. Ancient Chinese medicine teaches that Qi flows through the body protecting it against illness, pain and disease. When this Qi, known as vital energy, is blocked then physical and emotional problems ensue. The needles are placed in strategic areas to open the blockage and to allow the Qi to flow freely. Many people needlessly live with chronic pain when acupuncture may help. It is never too late to begin treatment for that backache, chronic headache or sore shoulder or knee when a visit to the acupuncturist could relieve the pain. “It usually takes more than one treatment to see results,” Parfrey said. “For chronic conditions there is usually improvement around the sixth treatment, but all cases are different. People suffer unnecessarily when they could be receiving help.”

Many of those at the higher end of the age spectrum can find improvement in their core body strength and improved flexibility, even from such ailments as MS, bursitis or stroke.” Many people who have physical problems, are older, or just plain out of shape and often prefer to have a private lesson or two prior to joining a class. SMELL OF SUCCESS
The Boat Office is redolent with the pungent side of the work Jarosz and his staff do – marine varnish, resins and glue predominate set off by a hint of marine oil. It’s a penetrating mix that works its way immediately into nasal passages, throat and lungs. Some visitors might be overwhelmed by it. To Jarosz, it’s the smell of success. Work here gets done. It has to. The crew is on a persistent six-month turn-around ruled by the seasons. The deadline applies to boats and to collectible cars. The motto on their new website proclaims, “Like a museum you can play in.” People want their boats ready to go in to the water on Memorial Day. During late August and through September, boats are taken out of the water, winterized and assessed for necessary repairs, which are
discussed with owners. Then they go in to storage on the premises, either in large barns or settled outside behind the shop. Outside boats are protected by huge tarps or shrink-wrapped. During the cold months, Jarosz and his crew pull the ones that need repairs or restoration in to the shop. After finishing those, the boats go back into storage, awaiting the owners’ call to take them out again for the next Memorial Day. And the business does this for antique cars, too. Most collectible car drivers prefer not to drive in snow and ice, particularly if the vehicle is not equipped with a heater. “My dad and mom, John and Jean Jarosz, moved to Delavan from Chicago in 1970,” Jarosz said over the whine of a power tool in the hands of one his team who is restoring a collectible “woodie” boat from the 1950s. “Dad worked at Reed’s Marine for awhile after he moved here, then decided to start his own business.”
BUSINESS HISTORY
John Jarosz Sr. bought seven acres of property complete with buildings that had housed an antique auction concern. It was situated on the south side of Highway 50 a scant mile east of Highway F and right down the road from Delavan Lake’s boat ramp in the Inlet. He began selling and restoring wood stoves, and was involved with that business for seven or eight years. Jarosz Sr. had enough customers that he brought his oldest son John Jarosz Jr. into the firm to work by his side. “The Delavan Boat Shed opened in 1977 or ‘78,” Jarosz said. Because of an economic shift, interest in wood stoves declined. John Jarosz Sr. began specializing in repairing and restoring boats, especially Chris Craft and kept selling and repairing stoves as a sideline. Jarosz Sr.’s wife, Jean, served as accountant for the fledgling business. “Dad and John were the front men,” Jamie Jarosz said. “Really good not only

The Delavan Boat Shed’s service and storage are exemplary. Neither is ever outsourced to other places except extensive

fiberglass work that requires dedicated computer programs, which is done by an associate company. When a customer calls or visits, he or she can speak directly with the people working on their boat or car, not with a manager who knows little about what’s going on or a person designated to transfer messages. Employees are always concerned with the quality of service and answering customer questions to the best of their abilities. If they say they’ll call back in a few minutes with information, they will. And even though the business specializes in restoring Chris Craft, Streblow, Hacker and Century antique boats, the team is talented and confident enough to take on nearly anything. “Bring us what you’ve got,” Jarosz said. “We’ll work on it.” The shop also repairs aluminum, including pontoon boats.

It’s a full-service, customeroriented business that claims more than 200 repeat local clients. “The business has doubled in the last two years,” Jarosz said. “Mainly because of our quality of storage and service. We’re always honest with our customers. “I never expected to run this place by myself,” he said. Jean Jarosz turned over the responsibility of the accounting to Jamie’s wife, Jennifer, several years ago. It’s Jamie Jarosz’s show now, and he has the responsibility of continuing an excellent business reputation built by his father and brother. Jarosz takes this responsibility very seriously.

1920s, and a gorgeous bright red Coca Cola delivery truck with yellow italicized lettering that shouts “In Sterilized Bottles.” The most unusual car here is a 1930 Jarosz thinks might have belonged to a mob boss because of the unusual reinforcements surrounding the back compartment, making that part of the auto nearly bulletproof. The most unusual boat he has is a oneof-a-kind 30-footer constructed in Turkey in the mid-1990s, used as a tender for a luxurious yacht. His personal favorite is his family’s boat that they bought in the 1980s – a 1926, 26-foot Chris Craft that still owns its original color and varnish. The cloudy details of its early life cause Jarosz to suspect it was once used as a rumrunner on the Chicago River. “I’ll never sell that boat,” he said.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Jarosz said it is impossible to fit into one or two job niches. He wears many business hats. Not only does he work at The Delavan Boat Shed and J’s Antique Cars, he also upholds a family tradition of serving his community as an assistant fire chief. “I take the incoming calls,” he said. In case of a fire in the Town of Delavan, he scrambles to his club cab dually pickup truck and takes off, headed for the emergency. “My dad was a fire chief, and so was my brother,” he said. That means having additional specialized training beyond repairing and restoring vintage cars and boats. He is somehow able to drop one detailed task for another at a moment’s notice. When asked how he juggles all the different aspects of his life, Jarosz shrugs. “It’s not easy, but I just do it,” he said. “I also have a very understanding wife and son.” The newest business facet of The Delavan Boat Shed and J’s Antique Cars will be sales of vintage autos in the showroom. “We’re waiting for the permission right now,” Jarosz said. It will be a natural extension of the work he and his crew do on old cars. Sometime soon he’ll have to change the description on the business advertising to say “repair, restoration and sales.” Jarosz’s son, Jacob, is 3 ½ years old. It is possible that sometime in the future The Delavan Boat Shed and J’s Antique Cars might include a third generation among its crew. But there’s no pressure. “I want him to be who he needs to be,” Jarosz said, smiling. Right now, the probability of another son working with his father in the shop looks promising. “He likes everything I like,” he said. “Especially antique boats and cars.” The handiwork of Jarosz’s crew is often on display during the summer months,

MAGICIAN OPENS INTIMATE THEATER IN LAKE GENEVA

hat was once a Lake Geneva furniture store has recently been transformed into a theater specifically designated for magic tricks and illusions. But that’s just where the real magic begins. With only about 50 seats, those settling in for a show at the Tristan Crist Magic Theatre in Lake Geneva are getting much more than the average magic show. Illusionist Tristan Crist, along with his two full-time “lovely female assistants,” offers a Las Vegas-style show featuring about
$100,000 worth of modern illusions he’s built up over the years. However, where Crist’s theater differs from others all comes down to its size. While other magicians might perform in much larger theaters, Crist’s theater in Lake Geneva is really quite small, though the size shouldn’t be construed as any indication of the quality of his show. Crist said the intimate setting will give him the opportunity to continue performing the grand, Las Vegas-style illusions he has always done, but in an up-close and personal way.

“
Here, we can slow things down a little, I can kind of get to know the audience, talk and joke with them.” – Tristan Crist “We’re going to make a full-scale motorcycle that works appear right here on this stage,” he said. “You will not be able to see this stuff anywhere else in the world. I guarantee as far as a magic theater, this is the most intimate place to see large-scale illusions. “We’re not going to hide anything from you because we’re 20feet away from you at the furthest.”
EXCLUSIVE TRICK
Speaking of the motorcycle illusion, Crist’s theater is likely the only place you’ll ever see it performed. Crist said the only other person with the rights to perform it is the illusionist who originally designed it. “You’ll never see that specific appearing-bike illusion anywhere else,” he said. “There’s only one other place.” Crist said while it is a family friendly show, you’re not going to see a birthday party magician pulling a rabbit from a hat – it’s the adults they’re performing for. “Kids are going to enjoy the show, but we’re not doing kid tricks,” he said. “No offense to the birthday party magicians out there, but they don’t have $100,000 worth of equipment. It’s just a different scale

of show when it comes to that sense.” For now, Crist said, shows will run for about 75-minutes with no intermission, kicking off at 7 p.m. on most nights and 2 p.m. for Sunday matinees. Shows will be pretty much contained to weekends, though come summer Crist said they’ll be performing seven days a week. While Crist said he’s often asked if he’s nervous about taking on the challenge, he said he’s comfortable with the prospect because it’s something he and his assistants have been doing for quite some time. “We’re very confident that people are going to see an excellent show, because that’s what we do,” he said. With a longer show in a more intimate theater, Crist said, his show also allows him to get a bit more personal with the audience and be more of an entertainer than a performer. “Here, we can slow things down a little, I can kind of get to know the audience, talk and joke with them,” he said. “So, a piece like this card trick I’m doing, where it has a story behind it, a reason behind the magic, that’s what I’m enjoying working on.” Crist said the new setting will allow people to become a part of the show rather than watching from 80-feet away. “Basically, they’re going to come, we’re going to have a party, I’m going to show them a bunch of cool magic tricks and we’re going to talk to each other,” he said. “You’re really going to be in the show, a part of the show … you’re going to be right there and it’s going to be a little more
interactive than what I think people think theater is these days.”
THRILLS, CHILLS
In a live magic show there’s a whole different energy compared to watching it at home on TV, Crist said, and there’s the added chance that something could go wrong. “I put my one girl in a box and I shove spikes through her,” he said. “It’s a dangerous trick, it really is. Most magicians cut their ladies in half. I slice mine into eight pieces. We certainly have that danger element that I think people like.” Crist said the show has also got its comedic value. Though he admits the jokes are a bit cheesy, he said it’s a part of the style and there are definitely plenty of laugh-outloud moments, something he’s received great feedback about over the years. Though the intimate setting puts pressure on the group to execute each illusion to perfection, Crist said it’s a challenge they’ve embraced. In preparing for the up-close-and-personal performances they’ve taken illusions they’ve done for years and tweaked them to a point where many of them are even more deceptive and more entertaining than they were before. “This is kind of cool ... we’re going to be right here,” he said. “It’s stuff that’s come about just because it’s, like, now we’re right here in front of people, how are we going to do this? “So the creative process has been really SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
cool as well.” Crist said with so much negativity in the world, it’s his pleasure to provide an opportunity for people to escape real life and “go be a kid again.” “I think that says it all right there,” he said. “Be a kid again. Sit back and enjoy something that you have no idea how it’s done. Try and figure it out if you want to or sit back and enjoy it. I encourage both. “More than anything, just come and have a good time because it’s so rare these days that people can just relax and enjoy themselves.”
THE ILLUSIONIST
Crist, who grew up in Milwaukee, said he took an interest in performing arts at a young age, acting in community theater and dancing with the Milwaukee Ballet School. When he received his first magic kit at about 6-years-old, Crist said the art grabbed a hold of him and forged a passion that has led him to where he is today. “That kind of hit home with me,” he said. “I started practicing the magic kit, went to the library and checked out books on magic, I went to see every magic show I could.” It wasn’t long before Crist was performing for friends and family in a theater he built himself in the basement of his home. “So, it’s funny now that I’ve built a real theater,” he said. As he grew older, Crist worked his way through college at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as a performing

illusionist and eventually earned a degree in technical theater. “Magician” wasn’t a degree option, he said. Having always wanted to own his own theater, Crist said he knew the degree would be priceless in his future as a magician. Immediately out of college, he was hired by Circus World in Baraboo, where he’s spent the last 10 years as the resident illusionist. Starting out with a 20-minute segment in the circus ring, Crist said, the show kept getting bigger and bigger until he eventually had a 400-seat theater he had built at Circus World strictly for his show. While he had reached success and had a theater at Circus World, Crist said he wanted to finally break out on his own.
THE THEATER
Looking to bring entertainment to a tourist town that doesn’t have live entertainment of his kind, Crist said he had been looking at Lake Geneva for a number of years before everything fell into place and enabled him to open the Tristan Crist Magic Theatre.
“We felt this was probably a great area,” he said. “It doesn’t really have anything like this yet so we’re pretty sure we’re coming in at a good time. It’s kind of just this perfect location.” Taking up hammers, nails and screw guns, Crist began to renovate the space at 609 W. Main Street only about a month ago, and through 14-hour days created a true theater in the Lake Geneva strip mall. Crist’s lobby, reminiscent of the glory days, the Golden Age of Magic, is decked out in reds and blacks. Posters featuring some of history’s greatest magicians and magic acts line the walls in lit, Vaudevilleesque frames. Stage lighting, curtains and more bring visitors immediately into that show business mood. “It was very important to me that people walk in and they suddenly enter our world,” he said. “It’s not just go to a magic show, it’s go and experience this whole world of magic and illusion – the history side of it. We’re really trying to push that home.” Along the back wall emblazoned with
“Tristan Crist Magic Theatre,” the counter features popcorn and more, and even a small magic shop, for those looking to amaze their friends as well. Having a degree in technical theater, Crist has decked his theater out with all the smoke and mirrors. Fog machines, lights, video projection equipment and more all come together to create the Tristan Crist Magic Theatre experience. “This show’s going to be as modern as you can get,” he said.

fter the stress of the holidays, during the normal winter incursion of ice and snow, most Wisconsinites dream of a warm getaway. Thoughts of azure skies and consistent golden sunlight trimmed with lacy clouds overwhelm mummified individuals bundled up in coats, gloves, and scarves. Exotic places with temperatures registering 70 and above become irresistible daydreams. Some stare at pictures of sandy beaches lapped by turquoise water and wish for a “Star Trek”style transporter that will deliver them there immediately. The transporter device is, alas, still shrouded by nonexistent
technology. With a little money and planning, however, an individual, a couple, or a family can embark on a great winter vacation to an exotic area, or one nearer home. According to the experts at Whitewater Travel and Chocolate City Travel, of Burlington, there are some excellent soul-reviving getaways within reasonable distances. These include Cancun, Mexico, and the Rivera Maya, also in Mexico. Both feature reasonable prices, wonderful weather, and gorgeous beaches for sun-seekers. Another not-so-far-away destination is Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, which offers some of the best Caribbean amenities such as watersports and

Some stare at pictures of sandy beaches lapped by turquoise water and wish for a Star Trek-style transporter that will deliver them there immediately.” beautiful weather. Just thinking about these places and starting plans to go there takes some of the chill off one’s bones. Costa Rica in Central America is not only famous for its coffee, it’s also well known for exceptional scuba diving. In addition, Costa Rica offers visitors a volcano, hot springs (thanks to the lava feeding the volcano), great canopy tours on cables strung through parts of the rain forest, and lovely beaches. Caribbean getaways Marcie Damaschke from Chocolate City Travel said there are non-stop flights to Caribbean getaway destinations from both Milwaukee and Rockford airports. One of the newest and most interesting warm-weather spots is Cuba. Recently renewed relations between its government and the United States has opened a tiny
crack for tourism in a door long closed by governmental mistrust and bad feelings. Currently, most visitors must prove a valid educational reason to be there and the itinerary to prove it (this information is from What you need to know about Cuba.com). All tours are given by guides associated with the current administration. It will take awhile for Cuba to become a true vacation destination because its infrastructure has not kept up with modern standards. Use of the Internet is very limited and expensive – credit cards are therefore not usable. Crumbling hotels need to be refurbished, or torn down and rebuilt. There are too few consistently working taxis and buses to fill vacationer’s needs. Other problems that restrict tourism include abrupt, unannounced changes in the hours historical sites are open, and peculiar
unexplained cancellations or changes in flight times. Much work and continued interest from prospective visitors will take care of such problems in time. Cuba is likely to eventually regain at least part of its former reputation as a warm and friendly place for a getaway. The island lies only about 90 miles from the Florida Keys. Most people associate Panama with its famous canal, but this small Central American country also has a rain forest that’s great for eco-tours. Its lavish casinos draw visitors from all over the world. One unusual excursion available nowhere else is the ship cruise through the Panama Canal

Other hot spots Hawaii has always been a dream vacation spot. Unfortunately, it has gotten quite expensive, and can be crowded. The Bahamas and Jamaica are no longer on the “must go” list, so they may prove good places to visit for a long weekend of thawing out. Not everyone has the time or money to take a break beyond the borders of the United States. There are some great places that may not be quite as sunny and warm as Mexico or the Caribbean, but they’re sunnier and warmer than the upper Midwest during a typical winter. Disney World in Florida is always a family draw. On that state’s Gulf side are Sanibel and Padre Islands, offering plenty of sand, sun, and watersports. Tampa and Miami are two large cities worth visiting. Key West is intriguing because of its uniqueness, Ernest Hemmingway’s house, and its wonderful sunsets. For jazz, food, and history, there’s nowhere like New Orleans, especially during Mardi Gras. Another soothing southern destination is the Gulf Coast, with miles of sand beaches, With blue skies and azure waters, Caribbean destinations are a tried and true winter getaway spot, according to local travel experts.

watersports, and plenty of great golf. San Antonio is a city with great history, and features The Alamo and the famous Riverwalk. For gambling, nightlife, and an amazing number of various shows from music reviews to illusionists, Las Vegas is still a choice destination. Another unusual possibility is taking a paddlewheel steamboat down the Mississippi River. This “floating vacation” has become much more popular in the last few years. The steamboat docks at interesting towns and cities along the way for sightseeing, shopping, and lunches. It’s much like an ocean cruise, except on a smaller waterway. Mini-escapes Weekend getaways might be just the thing if one doesn’t mind staying in the Upper Midwest. Water parks keep their popularity throughout the year. The Wisconsin Dells is known as the Water Park Capital of the World, headed by the Kalahari, Mt. Olympus, and the Wilderness Resort. Lake Geneva features Timber Ridge at the Grand Geneva, and Sheboygan has Breaker Bay. Grizzly Jack’s Grand Bear Resort and Water Park is located in Utica, Illinois, and Key Lime Cove is easily
accessible near Interstate 94 and Highway 132 in Gurnee, Ill. Bed and Breakfasts are for more snuggly, romantic getaways. Cedarburg and Galena, Ill., are well known for their quaint B&Bs. For themed suites with whirlpools (and sometimes waterfalls) in each room, Sybaris is a good choice. This romantic resort has three locations in Illinois at Northbrook, Frankfort, and Downer’s Grove. Others are located in Mequon and in Indianapolis. Day trips or afternoons offering something different locally are less sunny but are easier places to travel. They also can warm visitors with beverages rather than outdoor temperatures. Tours of nearby breweries are fun excursions. The elegant Pabst Mansion is located on West Wisconsin Street in Milwaukee and highlights the history of a great brewery. The Sprecher Brewery in Glendale has an excellent tour followed by a tasting featuring 20 brews and 10 sodas in their indoor beer garden. New Glarus Brewery rates a day trip: they advertise their products as SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
“world-class handcrafted beer made from 100 percent natural ingredients.” Hard Hat tours are on Fridays, cost $30 for three hours, and sell out quickly. Area wineries are growing in quality, popularity, and number. The award-winning Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac is on Highway 188, and offers visitors highly rated hourly tours. Wollersheim released four new vintages this November, which

greatly increases the range of wines they offer. This business has been rated by the Riverside International Wine Competition as the 2015 Small Winery of the Year. Staller Estate Winery in Delavan is a family-run business that features excellent European-style wines made on the premises. Watch their online ads for multiple-course meals designed and
prepared by an award-winning local chef. By the way, their ports and ice wines are extremely good. Cedar Creek Winery is in Cedarburg, and has tours. Studio Winery in Lake Geneva on Sheridan Springs Road offers visitors a mix of artisan-style wines and music – part of the building houses a recording studio. And there are at least three “Wisconsin Wine Trail” tours listed on the Internet that
showcase several excellent wineries. There are all sorts of getaways available to warmer climates, as well as weekends or day trips. Pick one (or several). Brickyard BBQ offers home-style cooking in friendly confines
Food
by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Most of us have heard the old saying, “You can’t tell a book by its cover,” but it seems that similarly you can’t tell what is or has been in a building by its front. A case in point is the building that is now known as the Brickyard BBQ, 217 N. Pine St., Burlington. On the edge of the downtown historic district, Brickyard BBQ is a family friendly restaurant and bar that caters to local residents and their families. According to Meg Schultz, who with her husband Wayne owns the Brickyard BBQ, the building has had an interesting and diverse history. Do you remember the Studebaker automobile? This building had its beginning as a Studebaker dealership. After Studebaker ceased production a new use for the building was found. First racquetball courts were installed on the lower level, followed by a sporting goods store, which opened on the street level. Over time the site of the racquetball courts became a health and fitness club. SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

What was unique about this fitness center, said Meg, “Is that it had a bar that served liquor here at the club.” But nothing lasts forever and the health club went out of business and was replaced by a restaurant. “When we opened here about five years ago, the restaurant had been closed and nothing had been in the building for several years,” said Meg. With the availability of this building on a main street, Wayne and Meg were convinced that this was the spot to open the restaurant and bar that Meg had been dreaming of for some time. “I worked in the food business on many levels and knew that at some time I would love to own a restaurant,” Meg Schultz said. She went on to explain that she likes to cook and has always loved to entertain. She views her role here as entertaining for a large group. Smokin’ it right Meg, who has always enjoyed southern cooking, began to experiment with ideas and recipes that she would incorporate into the restaurant. She began with a small smoker and then on a trip to Texas fell in love with a smoker 4 feet long. She purchased it and had it shipped back. “It was so heavy, it cost a fortune to ship it,” Meg SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Sprit of Geneva Lakes Behind the bar after 4 p.m. is Mary Vendetta (left) with owner and Green said. But she found it to be money well spent and began Bay Packers fan, Meg Schultz. to spend more time experimenting with recipes. Smoked wings are the favorite item on the menu here, although Meg also recommends her smoked pork, brisket and For those who do enjoy sauces on their meat, there are three chicken. All are smoked with their own home made rub. Barbecue house-made sauces available, each appealing to a different palate. sauces are all home made from Meg’s special recipes. There is a regular sauce, which is mild in flavor, a spicy sauce for “I actually smoke the meats with just the rubs. On any afternoon or evening people gather around the bar at Brickyard BBQ sharing their day with friends as they enjoy their favorite brew or mixed drink.
If you have difficulty choosing between the ribs, brisket or pulled pork, the best choice is the combo plate where you have a choice of two of the meats and two sides along with corn bread. But bring your appetite, because it is a very full plate of food. Side dishes to accompany the barbecue are also all made in-house. The potato salad available in the summer is a favorite and is
made following the recipe used by Meg’s mother. No ordinary slaw served here. Instead of being made with cabbage, the slaw here is a broccoli slaw. Baked beans, mac and cheese and freshly made chips round out the choices for side dishes. The corn bread comes with most plates. Some of the sides change with the season. It is just like being at a picnic at a Schultz family gathering.
Bring on the sides In addition to barbecue, the restaurant serves a full menu of homemade soups – again made from scratch in-house. These are seasonal and available throughout the winter. A variety of appetizers, including pickle chips served with horseradish ranch sauce or southern-style pulled pork or beef brisket nachos. There are so many choices that you may choose just to share a variety of appetizers. Pulled pork sandwiches, burgers, and chicken sandwiches make a good lunch or for something lighter SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Sprit of Geneva Lakes a green salad. is served each day from noon until they run out. So come early and be sure it is available. Meg recommends ending your meal with a sweet dessert. Or you may want to take it to go and enjoy it later in the evening. Abby’s bread pudding drizzled in a brandy sauce is a favorite as is the Carmel brownie, which is salty, sweet and gooey. Of course while eating this scrumptious food, you will need a beverage to accompany it. The full-service bar is there to provide your favorite drink. There are always 12 beers on tap. Miller Lite and Hacker Pschorr, favorites of the Backyard BBQ crowd, are always available on tap while the others change. Many of the draft beers are Wisconsin favorites, including New Glarus Moon Man and other seasonals, like Point Special Lager, Leinenkugel Honey Weiss – which is made with Wisconsin honey. These and others rotate through the draft lineup. Bottled beers are also available. Two Wisconsin staples If you prefer a cocktail, Meg also recommends their old fashioned, which she describes as “really, really, really good.” Other mixed drinks are available on request. Rosewood blooms near Delavan Lake
Dinner theater offers Branson-style entertainment
O
by Michael S. Hoey riginally scheduled to open in May 2014, Rosewood finally opened its doors on the site of the former Millie’s CORRESPONDENT Restaurant near Delavan Lake in October. Owners Mark and Gretch Hladish, who made performing at Millie’s a staple of their entertainment business, have transformed the building into a premier venue for music and dining. “The vision of the property owners was grander than ours,” Mark Hladish said about the delay in opening. “They wanted to completely rejuvenate the space, and it took a little longer to make it reality.” Millstead Inc. owns the building and property at 2484 Highway O, and Mark and Gretch Hladish own the business they said they believe will fit nicely with the touristdriven economy of the area.
The first show at Rosewood, Nov. 19, entertains a crowd of about 100 people. The venue brings Branson-style entertainment to the area and any remaining tickets for shows booked will be made available to the public.

“The sum total of all the improvements and potential made us realize putting off the opening would allow us to offer so much more,” Mark said. The former Millie’s building was completely gutted with much of what was inside sold at auction. The building was also deteriorating. Entire walls had to be reset in new foundations, all new plumbing and electrical systems were installed and the roof and exterior siding were replaced. Much of the interior of the building was renovated and repurposed. About half of the 20,000 square feet makes up Rosewood. The remaining space is for lease with a restaurant and an English pub as future business possibilities, said Gretch Hladish. The former Millie’s gift shop at the back of the building was cleared of vertical beams and transformed into an intimate cabaretstyle theatre with premium Bose sound system and a nearly floorto-ceiling video board. A new bar was put in the back of the room with a stained glass window that was part of the former Millie’s and the Hladishs said they are proud that local contractors did nearly all of the work on the building.
Gretch and Mark Hladish, owners of Rosewood, have been entertaining fans in the area for years and said performing in their own venue is a dream come true.
Dining, events In addition to the 140-seat theater, Rosewood offers two spaces for dining, weddings and private events that can seat 200 people, a shopping village that includes holdovers The Stitchery and Everything Homespun, two new Rosewood galleries and shops, two renovated gazebos for weddings and two apartments for rent. Gretch Hladish said a farmhouse on the property could someday be turned into an arts colony. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the work,” Mark Hladish said. “Every piece in the building has artistic appeal, and it was a monumental rejuvenation and repurposing of a property.” The primary focus of Rosewood, the Hladishs said, is MIKE HOEY Spirit of Geneva Lakes

entertainment, but the dining is important as well. Chef John Schnupp, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, his wife, Joy, and their sons, Jesse and Jacob, provide a fresh farm-to-table dining experience with meat and produce from farms no more than 200 miles away. Mark said the only freezer in the kitchen is for ice and ice cream. Gretch said guests can come for brunch and a show or purchase show tickets alone. The inspiration for Rosewood, Gretch Hladish said, was a strong desire for regional arts in the area. Mark and Gretch Hladish have been performing together since 2004, and 40 percent of their business was at Millie’s. When Millie’s closed, they had to consider their options. Mark Hladish said owning their own venue was not on their radar screen at first, but no venues in the area were interested in what they wanted to offer on a regular basis. Gretch said once the idea for Rosewood formed, they needed help making it reality. “The investors were excited about it,” she said. “It was a group of people who believed this idea was overdue for this area,” Mark Hladish said. Performance-driven Rosewood will not just be a showcase for the Hladishs. It will also provide a physical home for the Midwest Artists Network, an organization the Hladishs created 10 years ago that offers performers a way to collaborate. Unlike venues with set schedules, Rosewood’s business is driven by group sales and is event-driven. Mark Hladish said the number of senior tours that pass through the Midwest offer many opportunities for a stop in the area. Tour groups see what Rosewood has to offer and book a date. Whatever space remains for that show is made available to the public, many times in the afternoon during the week. People interested in attending a show just need to check the Rosewoodwi.com website to see what shows are available. The Hladishs plan to perform about 150 cabaret shows a year and offer 12 theme shows that will include holidays. The music combined with the video wall and production value provide the only Bransonstyle theater in the area, Mark Hladish said. “It is a unique intimate listening space to see a show,” Mark said. “It is more like a living room than a concert hall.” Other performers will also be invited to perform at Rosewood, and many

different styles of music will be offered. Mark Hladish said the area has many seasonal events that offer good music, but they are for short periods and dependent on good weather. Rosewood is open yearround and indoors. “We want to provide good family entertainment without breaking the bank,” Gretch Hladish said. Weddings bloom Another layer of the business includes wedding planning. Rosewood is not just a venue for a wedding, it can coordinate everything needed to provide a wedding. Rosewood also offers a venue for corporate team-building events and presentations and culinary and winetasting events. The Hladishs say they could not make Rosewood a reality without their team. The Schnupps take care of the dining, Jeff Iverson is the bar manager, his wife, Beth, SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
is the wedding planner, Debbie Slawson is the retail manager, Pat Bladow is the group sales and private events coordinator, and Shawn Slawson is the technical producer. Slawson got a degree in film at the Fullsail Visual Arts School in Florida and, Mark Hladish said “got it” when he pitched what the Hladishs wanted to do with Rosewood. “The production was a far bigger undertaking than one person could do, and I needed some outside expertise,” he said. Hladish said the video production of each show is an extension of Slawson’s creative expression. The Hladishs have overcome the usual challenges in opening a new business. They also overcame Mark Hladish’s open heart and bypass surgery almost two years ago. “You can’t imagine what it felt like to get the key to the front door, even in the demolition phase,” Mark Hladish said. “It
