East Troy Railroad releases Summer 2015
LINEUP of EVENTS
Celebrating 108 years of riding the rails through Southeast Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine countryside, the East Troy Electric Railroad has planned a number of special events for the upcoming season showcasing its collection of interurban rail treasures. The railroad will again be offering pizza and dinner train service allowing guests of all ages to enjoy dining by rail on former coaches of the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad. A variety of antique trolleys and interurban coaches that once whisked passengers from major cities to surrounding towns and nearby summer retreats will be featured during the season, including Chicago’s workhorse “L” cars that debuted in the 1920s, a rare trolley built for the Milwaukee Transport Company in 1920 and a lavish interurban trolley from 1908 originally manufactured for the Sheboygan Light Power & Railway. The 2015 summer events calendar includes:
Teddy Bear Train
Join us for a ride with Teddy on Saturday, May 30! Riders will participate in some teddy bear crafts and stories on our way to the Elegant Farmer. Once there, guests will enjoy lemonade, fresh apple cider and cookies with their teddy bears.

ike almost any other museum, the East Troy Railroad Museum exists because of its volunteers. The variety of tasks in the operation of a museum is amazingly wide. From answering the telephone to operating trains, many different kinds of people using many different kinds of skills come into play. What all of them have in common, though, is a desire to see things happen. This is the basis of the motivation that brings them out to the line and keeps them coming back regularly. They all know that whatever their time contribution, it’s needed to keep the line alive and growing. Some view their volunteer time as an opportunity to expand their skills and life experience. Many arrive with a skillset that they expect to use, and instead wind up assisting less-experienced workers while broadening their own skills in other fields. Every one knows that they are doing important work, keeping this valuable piece of history alive. All have time constraints, of course; not every volunteer can put in 150 days a year (as some of the retired ones may). Some can only find time for one day a month. But all like the work. It is involving, challenging, and very satisfying.
3
There are ways individuals are singled out for recognition in the volunteer events throughout the year, but any one of the honorees would quickly tell you that they don’t do it for the cheers of their peers. They get all the gratification they need by simply accomplishing something they know is important. That’s how it is. People can see the need, and find it interesting, even fun, to answer the call. On just about any weekend, stop on out and visit the museum. Talk to one of the volunteers. You too have a skill that can be put to good use, and some interesting, involving, and rewarding task awaits you. Or, call us at (262) 6423263 and ask about getting involved. See you out there!
info box: For more information on becoming a railroad volunteer, call (262) 642-3263 or visit www. easttroyrr.org. It takes about 40 volunteers to keep the East Troy Electric Railroad living history museum and its more than 20 rail treasures, including cars, locomotives, streetcars and interurban coaches, running.
We don’t run without our volunteers Plan approved for new The East Troy Railroad Museum (ETRM) would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of volunteers, which the organization runs solely on. Each year at the Annual Appreciation Lunch, one devoted volunteer is chosen for the “Volunteer of the Year” award. This award is given to one truly outstanding and inspiring volunteer who has taken a leadership role to preserve and enhance ETRM and encourage others to do the same. The 2014 award went to Ryan Barry, Car 9’s Restoration Project Manager. Ryan Barry has been a committed member since joining the organization three years ago when he began as a maintenance volunteer helping to maintain our vintage fleet of cars. “Ryan was chosen by the volunteers because of his hard work and dedication to the success of the museum,” Railroad President Ryan Jonas said. “You really get a sense of satisfaction when you volunteer here,” Ryan Barry said. ETRM is extremely grateful for volunteers like Ryan Barry who take time out of their busy schedules to help the organization succeed. Interested in becoming a volunteer for the East Troy Railroad Museum? We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers in the depot, the car barn and around the premises. Volunteer opportunities range from – but are not limited to – conducting, driving the trains, selling tickets, refurbishing trains, marketing, and much more! Contact the office at (262) 642-3263 or talk to a volunteer to see how you can help!
maintenance facility As of 2015, plans have been approved to begin work on a new – and much improved – maintenance facility. “Although museum volunteers have been discussing the idea for a better part of 20 years, this iteration started in fall of 2013. Project Manager John Jonas has been working closely with our maintenance team and other key volunteers to design a “sustainable” facility,” said President Ryan Jonas. “The board of directors has decided that building a maintenance facility where we can properly maintain our fleet of cars is the single most important asset we can acquire to ensure our continued success.” Currently, the museum lacks a temperature-controlled facility that can house a car that requires maintenance work. The current facility also lacks a pit to service the undersides of the cars. This combination of circumstances severely limits what volunteers can
do to maintain and restore equipment. A facility that is usable in the off-season will greatly increase the feasibility of project completion, season-to-season. The new facility will be located across from the Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago.
“A common question we often get at the museum is, “can we see the rest of the cars?” As much as we would like to say yes, our current four-track-car storage facility is a working shop and is not suited for public display. By moving most of our
maintenance activities down to the new maintenance facility, we can turn our current East Troy Car Barn into a show barn,” said Ryan Jonas. A show barn will allow customers access to explore and enjoy cars that are not running on any given day.

During the winter season when the depot is closed and the tracks are empty, volunteers are still hard at work to make the next season even better than the last. This winter, volunteer Ryan Barry led a renovation project for the beloved South Shore Car 9. “There were no other car restoration projects for interiors going on when I decided to take on this project,” Barry said. “No one was planning on doing one soon so I stepped up to do it. Plus I really enjoy Car 9 because of the historical aspects it has and I wanted to make sure the public is able to see the car in its best condition.” South Shore cars traveled from South Bend, Indiana to Chicago in their prime and are still in operation today. Car 9 is a steel interurban car meaning that it traveled between cities, providing transportation to people before making its way to museums like ETRM. Car 9 was renovated in 1993 after the museum received it in 1990; however, it was in need of further renovations to get it in tip-top shape for the 2015 season. “The train really needed to be restored,” Barry said. “The paint was peeling not only on the inside but on the roof as well leaving it exposed to the elements. The seats were also a main issue because they were falling apart and tears on the material were fixed by duct tape.” Barry and about 10 volunteers have been hard at work to make this project happen since September of 2013 where they began diligently stripping paint off of the roof. Volunteers were able to strip the roof entirely of chipped paint and re-paint half of the roof until it got too cold in the winter months. “The paint has been one of the most difficult aspects of this project,” Barry said. “The train had five layers of paint on it that we had to strip the car of.” The entire process of
Project Manager Ryan Barry stands in front of freshly stripped and sanded wall inside of Car 9. Ryan and crew spends several days a week working on meticulously stripping layers of paint and restoring various components of the car.

taking the paint off the roof and in the interior took four and a half months. Volunteers began taking seats out of the car in January to replace them with seats of a similar style from another South Shore car the railroad owns, Car 107. “We’re taking seats out of Car 107 which was one of the South Shore cars donated to the East Troy Railroad Museum a few years ago,” Barry said. The museum plans to turn Car 107 into a dinning car in future years adding to the capacity of its two-car dinner train. In addition to new paint and seats, the train’s metal vents
will be cleaned and painted and all woodwork will be re-finished. Barry hopes to have the car out on the tracks by July of this season. “I really enjoy Car 9 because it’s a big South Shore car that is has a lot of historical aspects to it. Plus it is one of my favorite cars to operate because it drives so smoothly,” Barry said. In addition to being a project manager for this restoration project, Barry can be seen driving the trains and conducting during the regular operating season. “Ryan Barry has done a wonderful job coordinating efforts to get Car 9 restored,”
East Troy Electric Railroad President Ryan Jonas said. “He has spent countless hours during the week and on weekends coordinating and carrying out projects. After this car is complete, riders can expect a clean representation of what a South Shore car was from their released era of the late 1920s.” Donations from patrons like you make it possible for renovation projects to be completed. If you would like to donate to the East Troy Electric Railroad Museum, please contact depot volunteers or the office at (262) 6423263.

Fine dining
Since 1992, the museum has been proud to present its dinner train service to guests around the globe. Using two retired South Shore cars built in 1927, our volunteers remodeled these two cars, stripping chairs out, installing bars and a lot of custom mahogany woodwork. Both cars are
decorated in the “art deco” style with car 24 displaying more greens and car 25 displaying more pinks. These cars were also outfitted with new picture windows and upgraded air conditioning systems. Finally, it was time to name our two diners and what better names than the “Ravenswood”

and “Beverly Shores”, two stations along the South Shore line in which these two cars originally came from. Our Dinner Train takes riders on a two-hour journey on our picturesque line. Salads and appetizers are preset on tables as guests board the train. After about a half hour, the train makes a brief pause as the main course arrives on tables. The Dinner Train travels beyond the usual Elegant Farmer stop to the shore of Lower Phantom Lake. Here, passengers hear a brief speech about the history of the line, the cars they are riding in and of course, the famous legend of Lower Phantom Lake! Sunsets can also be viewed from this spot over the lake. If you plan on booking a ticket on our dinner train, make sure to bring your cameras as the landscape and atmosphere provide plenty of Kodak Moments! It is also not uncommon to see swans on the lake along with other birds. After visiting the lake, our train pulls across Highway ES and into Indian Head Park. Here, guests are offered the chance to get off the train to stretch their legs, get some pictures and enjoy the park. After 15 minutes pass, we head back to East Troy with Dessert and after dinner drinks. Since we are in Wisconsin, after all, bar service is available! A common question that we have got in the past is,
“Can I bring my 5 year old on the Dinner Train?” Since our dinner trains are really setup for adults, we decided to start offering Pizza Train Service! The volunteers really had fun designing what this family friendly service would look like. Using the same dinner trains, red-and-whitecheckered table cloths are

hour and thirty minutes and includes a coupon for a scoop of ice cream from J. Lauber’s Ice Cream Parlor located directly across the tracks from our Depot in East Troy.
