ike almost any other museum, the East Troy Railroad Museum exists because of its volunteers. The variety of tasks in the operation of a museum is amazingly wide. From answering the telephone to operating trains, many different kinds of people using many different kinds of skills come into play. What all of them have in common, though, is a desire to see things happen. This is the basis of the motivation that brings them out to the line and keeps them coming back regularly. They all know that whatever their time contribution, it’s needed to keep the line alive and growing. Some view their volunteer time as an opportunity to expand their skills and life experience. Many arrive with a skillset that they expect to use, and instead wind up assisting less-experienced workers while broadening their own skills in other fields. Every one knows that they are doing important work, keeping this valuable piece of history alive. All have time constraints, of course; not every volunteer can put in 150 days a year (as some of the retired ones may). Some can only find time for one day a month. But all like the work. It is involving, challenging, and very satisfying.
3
There are ways individuals are singled out for recognition in the volunteer events throughout the year, but any one of the honorees would quickly tell you that they don’t do it for the cheers of their peers. They get all the gratification they need by simply accomplishing something they know is important. That’s how it is. People can see the need, and find it interesting, even fun, to answer the call. On just about any weekend, stop on out and visit the museum. Talk to one of the volunteers. You too have a skill that can be put to good use, and some interesting, involving, and rewarding task awaits you. Or, call us at (262) 6423263 and ask about getting involved. See you out there!
info box: For more information on becoming a railroad volunteer, call (262) 642-3263 or visit www. easttroyrr.org. It takes about 115 volunteers to keep the East Troy Electric Railroad living history museum and its more than 20 rail treasures, including cars, locomotives, streetcars and interurban coaches, running.
We don’t run without our volunteers Ribbon Cutting around the corner The East Troy Railroad Museum (ETRM) would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of volunteers, which the organization depends on. Each year at the Annual Appreciation Lunch, one devoted volunteer is chosen for the “Volunteer of the Year” award. This award is given to one truly outstanding and inspiring volunteer who has taken a leadership role to preserve and enhance ETRM and encourage others to do the same. The 2015 award went to John Jonas, our Maintenance Facility Project Manager and Dinner Train Manager. John Jonas has been a committed member since joining the organization five years ago when he began as a bartender on our dinner trains. “John was chosen by the volunteers because of his hard work and dedication to the success of the museum,” ETRM President Ryan Jonas said. “You really get a sense of satisfaction when you volunteer here,” John Jonas said. ETRM is extremely grateful for volunteers like John Jonas who take time out of their busy schedules to help the organization succeed. Interested in becoming a volunteer for the East Troy Railroad Museum? We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers in the depot, the car barn and around the premises. Volunteer opportunities range from – but are not limited to – conducting, operating the trains, selling tickets, refurbishing trains, marketing, and much more! Contact the office at (262) 642-3263 or talk to one of the volunteers to see how you can help!
on new maintenance facility On July 25, 2015, the East Troy Railroad Museum broke ground on a new 7,000-square-foot maintenance facility to help secure rail history for future generations. The existing maintenance and storage facilities lacked good access around cars and greatly limit the ability to maintain or refurbish trolleys and interurban railroad cars during the colder months. The new facility, constructed by Walters Buildings, contains a pit allowing the maintenance staff to work completely underneath the car – and it is temperature controlled. The new facility, located across from the Elegant Farmer near Mukwonago, is 128-feet long by 56-feet wide. It will allow for easy access around – and above – an entire railroad car. Cars enter the facility, which contains a machine shop and wood shop, on rails. “Historic trolley,
interurban and elevated commuter rail cars have come to us with millions of miles on them,” railroad museum President Ryan Jonas said, “and some of them are well over 100 years old. Electric,
wood and metal repairs are often required to keep these fine cars running down the track.” Walters Buildings, a family-owned company based out of Allenton, Wis., worked closely with East
Troy Railroad Museum to provide a high value solution that meets the unique requirements of the museum. Walters has supported the railroad with other structures since 1996.

Ready to roll Car 9 joins the railroad’s operating roster By Steve Thomas EAST TROY RAILROAD MUSEUM VOLUNTEER
East Troy Railroad Museum volunteers were proud when restored Chicago South Shore & South Bend Car 9 rejoined the operating roster on July 4, 2015. Nobody was prouder than Ryan Barry, who served as the project manager and did the lion’s share of the restoration work. The interior of the car is beautiful. It has been redone to match what Barry believes the car looked like when it arrived at the South Shore from Pullman Car & Manufacturing in 1926. Car 9 was one of the first 25 new cars ordered for the South Shore after utility tycoon Samuel Insull acquired the former Chicago, Lake Shore & South Bend railway in 1925. Cars 1 through 15 were doubleended coaches constructed entirely of steel. They were 61 feet long from buffer to buffer and weighed about 67 tons – some of the heaviest cars of their length ever built. Each car was equipped with four 210 h.p. Westinghouse No. 567-C motors and had Baldwin type 84-60 AA high speed, heavy-duty trucks. The cars also had Westinghouse electro-pneumatic multiple unit control and had both a pantograph and a trolley pole. Most of the cars had a separate smoking compartment and two bathroom compartments. The interiors were described as being finished in rich brown mahogany woodwork, with
light cream ceilings and linoleum flooring. Interior trimmings were of statuary bronze, and electric fans and large dome lights were installed. Fifteen of the original 25 cars were cut in half and lengthened to 80 feet between 1942 and 1950. But cars 1 through 10 remained at 61 feet long. Car 9 does not have a smoking compartment. The East Troy museum has 10 South Shore cars on its roster, with five operational and a sixth (car 33) being prepared for operation during the 2016 season. Cars 24 and 25 were converted to dining cars for the railroad’s popular dinner trains. Cars 13 and 30 have been workhorses during the regular season and teamed with Car 9 for the railroad’s 2015 Christmas Trains. It all started with the roof “I was just going to repair and refinish the roof,” Barry said. But what started with the roof in September of 2013 quickly moved inside the car. “I just kept looking at the interior, thinking about how great it would look if it were restored.” Once the project started, Barry and other East Troy Railroad volunteers worked meticulously for almost two years on the restoration, finishing the job on July 3, 2015. The roof turned out to be a bigger project than Barry had planned, even before he moved to the interior. “At some point the roof had been painted with grey
latex paint and the paint had deteriorated over time,” Barry said. “Someone had also applied linseed oil, but perhaps not in the right order. It appeared that the latex paint was put on top of the linseed oil. So the roof was very sticky.” Barry stripped off the grey latex paint, repaired some minor holes in the canvas, and re-stained the roof in grey. But the coloring turned out very uneven. The sticky, linseed base was part of the reason, but it also appeared that part of the roof had been refinished a different way than the rest. It just didn’t match, and it didn’t look good. At that point Barry, with the help of another East Troy volunteer, Fred Biederman, decided to use a darker stain. The red oxide color they chose matched the color of the roof of South Shore car 33, also at the railroad. It covered up the discoloration of the grey, and it seemed to match several historic photographs found of South Shore cars with darker roofs. Once Barry had a good look around the interior of the car, he knew that if he was going to do the project, he was going to do it right. He started by taking all the seats out, taking the vents and luggage racks down, and tagging the all pieces to make sure each could be returned to the right place. He took down all the light shades and took the globes inside the nearby volunteer center to make sure they did not get broken.
After removing the luggage racks, the color of the original wood could still be clearly seen. The shellac had deteriorated and cracked, but Barry could see the original color. His goal became matching the original color and finish. In theory, after applying the chemical paint strippers, it should have been possible to go through with a putty knife and peel off all the layers of paint. But in this case, only two or three layers at a time could be removed. Since there were five to six layers of paint, the chemicals had to be applied and stripped two to three times for each section of painted wood. When Biederman started stripping the bathroom doors, he discovered that they were lettered “Men” and “Women.” The layers of paint on top of the lettering were clearly visible. The top layer was a thick brown color; tan was next, then olive green. It appeared that tan had been used as a primer or as a base below the green. Then there was a white layer, and finally the wood finish with shellac, which had deteriorated before the first layer of paint was applied. Volunteer Adam Loeffler used a grinder to remove the heads of the bolts holding the seat bases in place. The nuts holding the seat bases beneath the car were completely rusted and very difficult to access. The easiest way to remove the bases was to grind off the heads of the bolts and pound the bolts

through the bottom of the car. After they were removed, all the seat bases were sandblasted and repainted. Ryan Jonas, president of the railroad museum, redid all the cab switches. He had to remove the outside plate around the control box in order to remove and refinish all the plungers and contact fingers for the switches. The cabinet was also repainted and reinstalled with new brass labels for the switches. In mid-summer of 2014, Barry and Biederman stripped the ceiling to prepare it for repainting. They decided to repaint the ceiling because there were sections where paint had peeled off in the past, and it had just been covered up with another layer of paint. The multiple layers were visible, as were all the joints and cracks where the old paint had never been removed. As with earlier decisions, Barry was determined to
do it right. To remove the old ceiling paint, he and Biederman first tried using an “air needle” system. It did not work well. Then they tried a wire brush wheel/grinder combination, which did a pretty good job. They used a sandblaster to clean the hardto-reach areas, including the joints and the cracks. Biederman did most of the sanding of the ceiling. Barry did all the sandblasting while wearing an airsupplied hood to make sure he did not breath in the sandblasting medium. After the sand blasting, a good grade automotive primer was applied. The finish coat matches the light cream color believed to have been original to the car. After the luggage racks were re-installed in early May of 2015, Barry and Biederman started reinstalling the seat bases

These cars were also outfitted with new picture windows and upgraded air conditioning systems. Finally, it was time to name our two diners and what better names than the “Ravenswood” and “Beverly Shores”, two stations along the South Shore line, where these two cars originated. Our Dinner Train takes riders on a two-hour journey on our picturesque line. Salads and appetizers are preset on tables as guests board the train. After about a half hour, the train makes a brief pause as the main course arrives on tables. The Dinner Train travels beyond the Elegant Farmer stop to the shore of Lower Phantom Lake. Here, passengers hear a brief speech about the history of the line, the cars they are riding in and of course, the famous legend of Lower Phantom Lake! Sunsets can also be viewed from this spot over the lake. If you plan on booking a ticket on our dinner train, make sure to bring your cameras as the landscape and atmosphere provide plenty of
Kodak Moments! It is also not uncommon to see swans on the lake along with other birds. After visiting the lake, our train pulls across Highway ES and into Indianhead Park. Here, guests are offered the chance to get off the train to stretch their legs, get some pictures and enjoy the park. After 15 minutes pass, we head back to East Troy with Dessert and after dinner drinks. Since we are in Wisconsin, after all, bar service is available! A common question we have got in the past is, “Can I bring my 5 year old on the Dinner Train?” Since our dinner trains are really setup for adults, we decided to start offering Pizza Train Service! The volunteers really had fun designing what this family friendly service would look like. Using the same dinner trains, red-and-whitecheckered table cloths are used versus the usual white linen for regular trains. Coloring books and crayons are available for keeping everyone entertained during the trip. Unlike the Dinner Train, we stop at Byrnes Park, which has a wonderful green space and playground. Here, energy can be “burnt off” while those who would like to remain on the train are welcome to do so.
The trip totals about an hour and thirty minutes and includes a coupon for a scoop of ice cream from J. Lauber’s Ice Cream Parlor located directly across the tracks from our Depot in East Troy. Tickets include your choice of pizza, garlic bread and bottomless soda. Advance reservations are required. For more information, please visit our Dinner Train page at easttroyrr.org/dinnertrains.html.

Welcome to East Troy!
EAST TROY CHAMBER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to East Troy. We’re so glad you’re here. We know you’ll enjoy your visit to the East Troy Electric Railroad, Wisconsin’s last original electric railroad line. After your ride, we hope you’ll extend your stay and return often to discover all of the great places to go and things to do in the community. East Troy is recognized for its unique attractions, recreational opportunities and fantastic events and festivals. It is home to Alpine Valley Music Theatre, one of the largest outdoor amphitheaters in the country, and Alpine Valley Resort, featuring one of Wisconsin’s largest downhill skiing facilities and picturesque 9-and 18-hole golf courses. You’ll find East Troy Municipal Airport, which houses more than 100 aircraft and Sky Dive Milwaukee that has been training jump students for 50 years. Our most notable landmark is the historic East Troy Village Square, which has a long history as the backdrop for community events. If you journey to surrounding businesses, you’ll also find historic sights, high quality dining, cafés and everything you need for a perfect day or night away. East Troy will capture your heart with its striking waterfronts and flourishing green space. Ten local lakes and three state natural areas, including Beulah Bog, Pickerel Lake Fen and Lulu Lake, are all located within two miles of the village. To help plan your visit, check out the chamber’s website easttroy.org, which has a complete listing of chamber members with Google maps to help you find your way around, as well as a visitor’s guide and community events calendar.

and the flooring. They put all the seat bases in place first to make sure everything fit properly. There were fittings and air valves under some of the seats, calling for careful trimming. Once they were sure
of a proper fit, they used rope to tie the seat bases to the luggage racks to allow them to install the flooring. The new flooring is durable transit flooring from a company named Altro (formerly Altro
Transflor). The East Troy Railroad worked with Altro’s Pennsylvania office previously to order flooring for CSS&SB car 30. Once all the floor covering was fitted and trimmed, it was glued. A heavy floor roller
made sure the floor adhered properly and helped remove air bubbles. This beautiful car now operates on a regular basis at the museum including Bunny and Christmas Train Operations.
Donations from patrons like you make it possible for renovation projects to be completed. If you would like to donate to the East Troy Electric Railroad Museum, please contact depot volunteers or the office at
