OUR TOWN 2016

Welcome to Western Kenosha County from the Report Group. This annual edition of Our Town features important community information and items that residents should be proud of. While I perused a plethora of features, photos and community achievements for this edition, there were a few that jumped out in my mind. Education has thrived in both Falcon and Panther country, with Westosha Central’s completion of an aircraft to Wilmot Union High School’s national title in the academic decathlon. Without the support of the community, none of these would have been possible, and should be a testament to the dedication of parents, teachers and students. Aside from academic excellence, Falcon athletics flew high, with a WIAA Division 1 state softball title, which was unforgettable for area student-athletes. Community volunteers and organizations made several annual events a rousing success, which include Libertyfest, Country Thunder and multiple other activities. Aside from those there is a notable sight weekly at Lance Park in Twin Lakes, where the Aquanuts perform ski shows throughout the summer. The Report puts its best foot forward in publishing upcoming

events, but the door is always open for more community groups to promote their wonderful events happening in the community. Let’s show the area what Western Kenosha County has to offer. Community groups, including civic and non-profit organizations, are encouraged to submit all of their events to us a month in advance, so we can highlight them through colorful photography and bring out the best in the area. High-resolution photos are preferable, with the names of those pictured (left-to-right). It all starts with you, the reader, where we strive to provide muchneeded recognition to those in the community. My door is always open, and I’m always willing to listen to what community members have to say. All of you are welcome to email me at jarndt@ southernlakesnewspapers.com.

Therapy Aquanuts bring freedom to people with disabilities

Volunteers are the key Lawless said the expertise and expense needed to host such an event puts it out of reach for groups like his.

ED NADOLSKI Our Town

Volunteer towboat operators from the Aquanuts take another participant on a ride around Lake Mary in Twin Lakes as part of the Aquanuts annual adaptive aquatics day for people with disabilities last August.

But thanks to an army of volunteers – from adult boat owners and drivers who take a day off of work to help, to teen water show team members who provide the muscle and enthusiasm – the event delivers priceless freedom at little cost to the participants. Just ask Bill Steinberg of Highland Park, Ill., who now plans his summer schedule around the annual event. “To be honest, I feel completely free,” Steinberg, 21, said after circling Lake Mary aboard a water ski chair. “It felt totally wild.” The ear-to-ear grin sported by

Steinberg was perhaps exceeded only by the smile worn by his mother, Teri Steinberg, who watched her son’s ride from the towboat alongside Bill’s grandfather. “I wouldn’t be able to do this for him,” Teri Steinberg said. “He looks forward to this. He took the day off from work and he totally loves his job.” Bill Steinberg, who has autism, works in buildings and grounds for School District 109 and also works for the Highland Park Recreation Department. OUR TOWN 2016

For about as long as By Ed Nadolski there has been water, sun Editor in Chief and sand, summer has meant freedom for teens and young adults. Throw in a boat, some water skis and a towrope and you have all the makings of unbridled summer fun. It’s something the members of the Twin Lakes Aquanuts water show team know and love. And it’s precisely the feeling that 15 years ago drove Aquanuts alumnus Sue Richey to find a way to bring the exhilarating freedom of water sports to all people regardless of their abilities. Today Richey, an occupational therapist for Alexander Leigh Center for Autism in Crystal Lake, Ill., is among the country’s experts in adaptive aquatics. She is also the soft-spoken champion for scores of area children and adults who otherwise would never have a chance to feel the wind in their faces and spray of the lake against their legs. Last summer, Richey and the Aquanuts hosted their 15th annual adaptive aquatic clinic for Dreams for Kids, a Chicagobased organization with a mission of empowering youth who live with disabilities or poverty. The event was held at Lance Park on Lake Mary. “No organization could pull this off without the Aquanuts doing it all,” said Dave Lawless, director of activities for Dreams for Kids. “They come out and rock it every time.”

In addition to occasional water sports, Steinberg was training to run a 10-kilometer event under the tutelage of his grandfather. Teri Steinberg said the sense of confidence her son has gained at the annual Aquanuts outing contributes to the life success of the young man who recently earned his driver’s license. A favorite thing That type of effect is just what Richey envisioned when she conceived the event 15 years ago. “We serve all types of disabilities – from autism to other physical handicaps,” she said. “We even did a Wounded Warrior event. “It’s so wonderful. It’s my favorite thing to do every summer.” Richey said many of the participants are experiencing physical freedoms for the first time and “their families are continually thanking us.” The connection with Dreams for Kids began years ago after Richey volunteered for the organization. After attending a threeday training session on adaptive aquatics Richey put together the initial event and it has grown exponentially since. Now she’s the one attending conferences hosted by the Wisconsin Water Ski Federation and conducting the adaptive aquatic workshops. As gratifying as it is to see people with disabilities enjoy water sports, Richey said the event is just as beneficial for the Aquanuts who volunteer. “What’s great is it has changed the lives of the kids on the team, not just the participants,” she said. “We’re purely volunteers. All of us do this on (behalf of) the Aquanuts. “It’s how we give back.”

Twin Lakes finds new chief in its ranks

The Village of Twin Lakes kept it in the family when they selected a new police chief after the retirement of a long-time department leader. After the retirement of Dan Racer, the Village of Twin Lakes stayed within, tabbing Adam Grosz. Grosz, a full-time patrol captain arrived to the village police force from Rome, where he held their police chief post. Racer, who served as police chief for nine years, stepped down in April to focus on personal endeavors after being involved with law enforcement for more than 30 combined years. “It was a hard decision to leave, but I figure after 36 years of doing this, it was time to leave,” Racer said at the Committee of the Whole meeting, where

Community members in Salem and Paddock Lake celebrated on the streets when Westosha Central High School capped off its WIAA Division 1 softball season with a state championship last June. The Falcons, who finished 28-4, featured catcher and state Gatorade Player of the Year Kayla Konwent and battery mate, pitcher Alyssa Hrncar. Konwent slugged 21 home runs with 46 RBIs her junior season while Hrncar logged 183 innings, where she struck out 231 batters as a sophomore. Fresh off the 3-0 state title win against Watertown at Madison’s Goodman Field, Hrncar was grateful for the community support when the team arrived home. “It felt very humbling to be saluted by the town when we came back from our state tournament run,” Hrncar said. “We were blessed to have the fans we did throughout the entire season.” The Falcons victory was the team’s second state title in three seasons.

academic excellence

Wilmot Union High School is a breeding ground for academic champions. The school’s academic decathlon squad captured a Division 2 national title in Garden Grove, Calif., in 2014, and has been unbeaten in state competitions the last two years. The squad won the Wisconsin state championship in the Wisconsin Dells in March 2015, where they tabulated nearly 49,000 points. Students were required to present a 4-minute prepared speech, a 1-1/2 to 2-minute impromptu speech, interview, essay and super quiz relay. According to coach Don Serkowski, the squad of nearly a dozen Wilmot students is seeking another national championship, which will be held in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2016. The nine students who were part of last year’s national champion squad were Carlie Banchi, Carl Simmons, Alyssa Gregory, Joey Burba, Angela Schumacher, Johny Weber, Mason Nindl, Ashley Dabbs and Althea Disse “They’ve worked incredibly hard since May, and continue to improve every time they compete,” he said.

he Aquanuts went National in 2015, capturing its first championship in more than 30 years at the Indmar Marine Engines Show Ski Nationals in Loves Park, Ill., in August. The organization, which produces a wide array of acrobats on the water near Lance Park, presented three champion acts along with a swivel at the Rock River. While all teams displayed comedy acts and skiing tricks, the Aquanuts theme centered on the 1980 classic movie “Animal House,” dubbed “College.” The Aquanuts won top honors with their 31-skier, allfemale ballet line, consisting of a complex performance beginning with nine swivel skiers, followed by a thread-theneedle pickup of the remaining 22 skiers – 11 on each side. Additionally, the Aquanuts garnered accolades for the best barefoot act and swivel performance. Kailey Koehler, of Lake Geneva, won the best barefoot act with her barefoot circles, where she skied backwards four times, earning a standing ovation from the crowd. Koehler was also part of the swivel act, which included her sister, Arianna and 2014 national champions Kendall Krieger of Lake Bluff, Ill. and third-ranked Kaila Coffey of Silver Lake. Krieger and Coffey anchored the team, followed by a 360-line and a 180-degree line of 14 skiers, the largest in the nation. Following the awards ceremony, they were given an honorary emergency vehicle escort en route to Twin Lakes.
