Arthritis: You CAN help your pet! Arthritis is the inflammation of a joint, which can cause pain and swelling. Recognizing arthritis can be difficult because it progresses slowly, pets don’t complain about their aching joints, and some owners assume that signs of arthritis are “normal” in older animals. Comprehensive exams help your veterinarian detect and treat before it becomes too painful. Managing arthritis involves a) controlling pain and inflammation, b) repairing and maintaining joint cartilage, and c) keeping the joints lubricated. Tools your veterinarian may use to treat your pet include: 1. Weight control: proper diet and exercise.

2. Natural supplements such as glucosamine. 3. Adequan, an injection to lubricate the joint and make cartilage more resilient. 4. Nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) to control pain and inflammation. Periodic bloodwork is needed to monitor liver and kidney function. 5. Laser therapy which uses light to stimulate endorphins, reduce inflammation and bring more oxygen to the cells. NEVER give medications without consulting the veterinarian first! Certain human drugs can be very harmful. Call us for an exam and consultation to determine what is best for your pet to minimize discomfort and slow the progression of this debilitating disease.

ANNUAL NOTICE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION REFERRAL AND EVALUATION PROCEDURES Upon request, the North Cape, Washington-Caldwell, Waterford Graded and Union High School Districts are required to evaluate a child for eligibility for special education services. A request for evaluation is known as a referral. When the district receives a referral, the district will appoint an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to determine if the child has a disability, and if the child needs special education services. The district locates, identifies, and evaluates all children with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in private (including religious) schools, elementary schools and secondary schools located in the school district. A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker, or administrator of a social agency who reasonably believes a child brought to him or her for services is a child with a disability has a legal duty to refer the child, including a homeless child, to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring the child, the person making the referral must inform the child’s parent that the referral will be made. Others, including parents, who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability, may also refer the child; including a homeless child, to the school district in which the child resides. Referrals must be in writing and include the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability. A referral may be made by contacting Sandra Asmussen, Director of Special Education, Waterford Special Education Cooperative, at 262-534-4034, or by writing her at 100 Field Drive, Waterford, Wisconsin 53185.
