WATERFORD AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Featured Business of the Month – November 2015 - Educators Credit Union Waterford Area Chamber of Commerce member Educators Credit Union (ECU) has been an established financial institution in southeastern Wisconsin for over 78 years. Here is a fun fact, the credit union began its roots in a teacher’s home in Racine in 1937 and didn’t move into an office building until November of 1961. The Burlington branch opened in 1973 on Chestnut Street and moved to their current location, 448 Falcon Ridge, in 2001. ECU has 17 branches in SE Wisconsin with over 140,000 members of which 6362 call Burlington their home branch. Branch Manager Marge Schmid has worked for ECU for 38 years and moved to the Burlington branch in 1991. She has been only the second branch manager in the history of the Burlington branch. Marge is proud to work for an organization that takes pride in serving their members as well as the community and has seen a lot of changes and growth within ECU and in the community. ECU provides its members the most current technology tools such as the control app which a member can use to turn their credit/debit card on or off; mobile app; and have already switched over to EMV chip credit cards. Soon ECU will be rolling out more features for online banking. ECU will be coordinating an upcoming event at Burlington High School called Reality Days where students get to participate in real life scenarios for a day. Students are given a “profession” with a comparable salary and have to make decisions that will impact their finances such as paying rent, groceries, utilities, day care, etc. Local community organizations and businesses partner with ECU to help make this a great learning experience for the students. Marge explained she takes care in helping to educate current and potential members of all the member benefits they can receive through the many services offered by the credit union. Members are owners of the credit union. Board members are volunteers and are also ECU members. Every November, ECU gives back to their members based on how well the credit union did during the year and based on how many services the members use. This “reward” is usually cash put back into the member’s savings account. We would like to thank ECU for being a longtime WACC member and for their continued support of our chamber over the years. Congratulations for being the Featured Business Member during November 2015. Learn more about ECU by visiting their website www.ecu.com.
