Spring is on its way, and soon, home and business owners will be cleaning and preparing lawn and garden equipment. “Many are so eager to pull out lawn and garden equipment once spring arrives that they sometimes forget basic steps to ensure the powerhouse of the equipment – the engine – is in good working order,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of Outdoor Power Equipment Institute. “One challenge is that most fuel contains some level of ethanol, which contains corrosive alcohol. If you left that fuel in the tank over the winter months, you don’t want to use it in the spring. It may damage your equipment. You need to drain it and put in new fuel that is E10 or lower,” advises Kiser. Whether it’s a mower, trimmer, blower, chain saw or pruner, the institute offers tips to help users avoid fuel-related problems and ready their equipment to operate safely. Check the fuel tank. If fuel has been sitting all winter long in the fuel tank, do not use it in the spring. Drain it responsibly and put in fresh fuel. Remember to dispose of this fuel properly. Use only E10 or lower fuel in your outdoor power equipment. Do not use gas with more than 10 percent ethanol (E10) in outdoor power equipment. Some gas stations may offer 15 percent ethanol (E15) gas or other fuel blends, but this higher ethanol fuel is dangerous – and is in fact illegal – to use in any small engine equipment, such as lawn mowers, chain saws, generators, and all other lawn and garden equipment. Don’t leave fuel sitting in the tank for
more than 30 days. Untreated gasoline (without a fuel stabilizer) left in the system will deteriorate, which may cause starting or running problems and, in some cases, damage to the fuel system. Inspect your equipment. Check for loose belts and missing or damaged parts. If you find anything concerning, replace the parts or take your equipment to a qualified service representative. Drain out the old oil and put in fresh oil. Remove the oil drain plug in your lawn mower and catch the old oil in a container. Replace the plug and refill the engine with oil recommended by the product manufacturer. Properly dispose of the oil you drained. Install clean air filters. Your engine and equipment will run much better with clean filters. Paper filters need to be replaced. Some foam filters can be cleaned and replaced. Sharpen your cutting blade. Have your lawn mower’s cutting blade sharpened so you can get a clean cut on your lawn. Your lawn will be healthier and your lawn mower will operate more efficiently, too. Clean your equipment. If you did not clean your equipment before storing it, there may be dirt, oil or grass stuck to it. Give your equipment a good spring-cleaning. A cleaner machine will run more efficiently and last longer. Review your manual. Now is a good time to read the operator’s manual and reacquaint yourself with the controls and what they do. Make sure you know how to stop the machine quickly if needed. For more information, visit www.OPEI. org.

NO-MAINTENANCE MAKEOVER Low- and no-maintenance features top the list when making over outdoor living spaces because less time maintaining means more time enjoying. Low-maintenance landscaping outranks native plantings, water features and food/vegetable gardens according to the American Society of Landscape Architects 2014 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends survey. Landscape professionals love to share their secrets and show off their craft when redesigning outdoor spaces for low or no maintenance. Armed with know-how and using sweat equity, do-ityourselfers also can employ tips that professionals use for a no-maintenance landscape makeover.
Landscaping with hardscapes Landscape professionals use retaining wall systems for a variety of landscaping solutions. Segmental retaining walls are commonly used to transition elevations, shore up slopes along foundations and define spaces such as creating planters, tree rings and other features. “Hardscape products like retaining walls and pavers are important tools for both landscapers and do-it-yourselfers in creating low-maintenance landscapes,” says Scott Arnold, manager of Villa Landscapes in St. Paul, Minnesota. “With just the standard VERSA-LOK retaining wall unit, you can easily create seat walls, curved couches, columns and other features.” Retaining wall systems combined with concrete pavers can be used to create beautiful raised patios, replacing high-maintenance wooden decks, says Arnold. In addition to being as cost effective as a wooden deck, a raised patio offers several advantages. “A deck railing can be replaced with wrought iron fencing or a low seat wall so the view is unobstructed,” Arnold says. “Raised patios also look great with a contrasting paver course or rock barrier for potted plants, and steps to the ground can be created with retaining wall units.” Retaining wall units and interlocking concrete pavers come in a variety of colors, shapes and textures to complement any landscape design and are often used to create design continuity in outdoor spaces. Tree rings can be coordinated or color-contrasted with raised patios, retaining walls and other hardscapes.

Retaining wall systems combined with concrete pavers can be used to create beautiful raised patios, replacing high-maintenance wooden decks.
Low-maintenance landscaping practices Landscaping practices can make it easier to control weeds and manage lawn care as well. The use of rock mulch and natural rock in gardens and beds, as walkways and as stepping stones offers an attractive solution to weed control and also lessens the need for irrigation. At least three inches of rock mulch or four inches of natural mulch will prevent weeds. Maintenance-free outdoor accessories Selecting maintenance-free outdoor furniture and accessories is an easy way to make over a space. Outdoor
furniture made of recycled HDPE like Comfort Craft requires no storage or maintenance other than cleanup with soap and water. Unlike wood, Comfort Craft furniture won’t chip, splint, crack or rot and never needs painting. Hardscape kits – containing everything needed to create a fireplace, fire pit, water feature or grill island – are some of the most popular low-maintenance landscaping products. “Using easy-to-install kits like those from Willow Creek Paving Stones, homeowners and contractors alike can create beautiful features such as grill islands, bar islands, fire pits and fireplaces that are long-lasting and low-maintenance,” (BPT) Arnold says.
Tips to update your home’s technology When thinking about home updates, our attention so often turns to a fresh coat of paint or new décor, but some of the most practical, meaningful changes you can make to your home will truly modernize the way you live. Here are a few key tech updates to fully bring your home into the 21st century. MODERNIZE YOUR LANDLINE As our mobile phones’ functionality expands with each generation, don’t leave your home phone in the dark ages. You can now link your mobile phone calls to your home phone. For example, with a Panasonic Link2Cell handset, you can link up to two smartphones to make and receive calls, as well as receive talking ID alerts so you never miss a text. You don’t even need a separate landline to use these features. Other technology highlights include Enhanced Noise Reduction that allows you SUBMITTED PHOTO Home & Commerce Show 2015 Even if you have all the latest mobile gadgets, there’s no guarantee your to suppress background noise around callers home life matches your techy, on-the-go lifestyle. Take steps to bring your home while simultaneously enhancing their voices, and a powerful battery back-up system that up to speed.
keeps you connected when the power goes out. More information can be found at www. Panasonic.com. HOME THEATER Bring the theater experience home by giving your living room or den a tech makeover. A smart home theater system will sync with your devices so you can enjoy music wirelessly or access an external or network drive for media content. Don’t forget the surround sound, as well as a lighting scheme that optimizes your audiovisual experience. PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT Going green and being comfortable can now go hand in hand. Improve your home’s energy efficiency and well being at the same time by investing in a programmable thermostat. Look for a user friendly, intuitive thermostat that automatically turns itself down when you are not home and that can also be programmed remotely from a laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Give your kitchen a new look with a lighting update A simple, inexpensive lighting update can completely transform your kitchen from dull to dynamite. According to the American Lighting Association, good lighting design makes kitchens more functional, as well as more enjoyable, relaxing and suitable for entertaining. “Good lighting is vitally important in kitchens,” says Jeff Dross, corporate director for education and industry trends for Kichler Lighting. “Perhaps more work in the home is done in the kitchen area than any other room, and having improper lighting would be tantamount to candles in a warehouse or flashlights on a factory floor. “Food preparation is a vital, though sometimes tedious, task performed virtually every day,” Dross continues. “Cooking in a poorly illuminated space only increases the drudgery and the danger. Good lighting adds to the overall space, and increases the pleasure in using said space.” The very fact that kitchens are spaces where people spend a lot of time makes them valuable areas when reselling a home, as well. For this reason, many experts agree kitchen renovations are among the best ways to boost the value of your home. Along with bathrooms, kitchens are an integral part of the home to virtually everyone. Unfortunately, when it comes time to updating kitchens with a new look, lighting does not always get the attention it deserves. According to Dross, this is to the detriment of home design.

The proper lighting can turn an average kitchen into something great. Homeowners should give consideration to what tasks need to be lit as well as the overall lighting of the space.

“Lighting is as important a design element as wall coverings, flooring and countertops,” says Dross. “It can make an average kitchen look great and elevate a fabulous design to perfection. Need to increase the visual size of a room without tearing down a wall? Add lighting above the cabinets and at the toe-kick space. “The importance of good, high lumen output for task (under-cabinet) lighting cannot be over emphasized,” Dross adds. “Wall-mounted cabinets create shadows on countertop work surfaces. The only way to alleviate those shadows (and the accompanying dark spots on the cutting

board) is with under-cabinet lighting.” Another factor to keep in mind relates to energy usage, and by extension, your power bill. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that American consumers use electricity for lighting the kitchen more than any other room in the house. So, to save electricity costs, invest in energyefficient lighting in the kitchen. To see the most up-to-date fixtures and shades, and to consult with a professionally trained lighting expert, visit a local ALA-member retailer, or go online to americanlightingassoc.com.

TIMELESS OR TRENDY?

WATERFORD HOME & COMMERCE SHOW
MARCH 2015
This year, achieve both in your home decor
Are you looking for ways to update your home this year? With so many fresh interior ideas available, it can be difficult to balance current design trends with classic styles for a look that is both of-themoment and everlasting. Follow these guidelines to find a way to blend now and forever for a look you will love today and tomorrow:
Focus on the foundation As you are laying the groundwork in your kitchen, bath or bedroom, the key is to keep it timeless. Flooring, cabinetry, lighting and fixtures should possess clean, traditional lines and classic finishes. If it’s time to do a complete overhaul of your home, you may be tempted to invest in the latest and greatest in materials and furniture offerings, but sometimes the simplest of tweaks can bring your existing pieces up to date. For example, your sofa may have great structure, but could use a bit of reupholstering. Or perhaps your oak kitchen cabinets are an ageless shape, but could be transformed by painting them a fresh color and swapping out the hardware. Incorporate color Taking a classic space and transforming it when you have an itch to try something new is done easily with paint. For 165 years, Pratt & Lambert Paints has been

Whether you want to take small steps to refresh the look of your home, or want to tackle larger renovation projects, it’s easy to stay on trend while paying tribute to classic design. You can have the best of both worlds for timeless decor that can easily transition with you through the years.
synonymous with recognizing the shifts and nuances of home style and design. In the true fashion of merging timeless with trendy, the brand has recently released its 2015 Color Trends Forecast, called Origins, which goes full circle from essential neutrals to progressive pops of color. Consider spicing up your kitchen with colors from the Cadence palette.

The collection focuses on co-mingling of cultures, and what better place to feature these hues than the room where flavors from all over the world are literally coming together on a daily basis? Pratt & Lambert colors Baby Carrot (8-11) and Vibrant Red (4-12) can make a statement throughout the entire space, or just on an accent wall near a breakfast nook. Many people seek to transform their

current bath into a soothing, spa-like retreat. To capture that feeling, paint walls and even ceilings the cool or deep bold colors of water - much like those included in the Chronicles trend that speak to hues straight from the depths of the ocean. Look to the Pratt & Lambert shades Blue Zircon (23-13), Glacial (27-2) and the Color of the Year, Noir (24-16). A bedroom is a place for rest – a calm, down-to-earth haven. Pratt & Lambert’s two trend palettes, Elemental and Terra, are the perfect pick for the place in which you recharge. Interior designer and Pratt & Lambert Style & Design Guild member Laura Kirar recommends shades Tobacco (33-19) and Feather Gray (32-37) from the Elemental palette. They are sure to provide many nights of peaceful slumber. Include the harmonious hues of the Terra palette, Rye (12-26) and Zinc (14-20), for a natural, relaxed vibe. A dash of detail Now with a solid foundation and freshly painted walls, move to the decorations that will truly transform your home. Remember – small pieces can make a grand statement, so pick and choose how you will incorporate trendy accessories like table lamps, hand towels, planters, window coverings, pillows, throws or table settings. BATHROOM LUXURIES Six delights to take your bath from lax to luxe
The bathroom doesn’t have to be basic. Thanks to a wide array of new products on the market – and plenty of ways to customize – even the most outdated bathrooms can become an oasis of tranquility and a lavish retreat away from the stresses of everyday life. Here are six ideas for transforming your bathroom into a luxurious spa-like space. Beautiful bathtubs What could be more relaxing than a bubble bath? While some people still enjoy a whirlpool tub, freestanding tubs are growing in popularity, creating a stylish focal point in the master bathroom. Freestanding tub-filler faucets add the perfect finishing touch. Whether your taste is traditional or modern, Moen offers an array of options to accommodate any style preference. Featuring an exquisite hand shower with an antique design, the Moen Weymouth freestanding tub-filler includes cross handles with elaborate porcelain inlays. For a more modern take on the freestanding tub-filler faucet, the Arris model offers distinctive styling with crisp, cylindrical, geometric shapes. To make your bath even more luxurious, some tubs offer a built-in water heater to achieve the perfect consistent temperature. Wonderful water systems Customizable shower systems can help you achieve a spa-like environment. Today’s showerheads offer numerous options to tailor water pressure and flow, whether you prefer a gentle rain-like feel or a more powerful spray. To further enhance the bathing process, body spray systems create a vertical spa experience, providing generous water coverage, and flush mounts give the shower a clean appearance. Be sure to install body sprays with an adjustable spray face to get water exactly where you want it, to create a relaxing sensation of being enveloped by water. • see LUXURIES on page 11

The extra space you have dreamed of has been with you all along. Transform your basement from barren to beautiful and you’ll be creating a space you can enjoy for years to come.
THE LOWER LEVEL Five projects to recreate your basement
Have you ever wished you had more space in your home? Maybe you’d use the space to pursue a hobby, host out-of-town guests or just spread out and get some quiet time to yourself. The space you desire could already be in your home in your basement. If your cellar is nothing but a series of unfinished areas used for storage, you’re not getting all the benefits you could be from the space. Making the most of your basement doesn’t have to mean costly contractors and expensive remodeling scenarios. Several easy DIY projects that you can take on alone, with the aid of the right tools, can help you gain that extra space you wish for. Ready to get started? Give these projects a try: Build walls Adding drywall to your basement has a big impact on the space immediately. Use 2-by-4s to mark where the walls will stand and place studs 16 inches apart. Then nail the panels to the wall where the edges meet the studs and cover the seams with drywall tape. Once the walls are up, mud the seams and areas where nail pops appear. A drywall saw or power saw will help you shape your drywall perfectly, but if you don’t own one, you don’t have to buy one. It’s more cost efficient to simply rent it instead for this one-time project. Your local American Rental Association member rental store will have what you need. Don’t forget to add drywall stands to your rental list.

With the right fixtures, lighting and accessories, it’s simple to transform your space from ordinary to opulent.
A touch of paint A fresh coat of paint means you won’t have to stare at those drab walls in your new space. You can paint the space by hand, but if you have a large basement and you want to give every room that professional look, rent a paint sprayer instead. The cost is worth the time saved.
Freshen up your floor If your basement is completely unfinished, you probably have cold, concrete floors. How you improve them is up to you. If you want the polished, marbled look, consider renting concrete floor finishing equipment for a look that’s sure to amaze. And if the appearance of hardwood is more your style, laminate flooring panels are inexpensive and easy to install. Lastly, if you want the feel of carpet beneath your feet, don’t forget to add the pad first to make those future steps a pleasure. Eliminate the stink Your new basement is coming together, now what can you do about that musty basement smell? A dehumidifier can help. You can purchase one at your local home goods store and when you get it home, try to place it near the washtub sink if your basement has one. This will allow you to drain right into the sink and save you from having to empty the dehumidifier regularly. Install a sump pump Now that you’ve refinished your basement, don’t let water damage ruin all your hard work. A sump pump can protect against flooding issues and installing one is easy. Most new homes have a location marked for a sump pump; it will look like a small well. Follow the water pipes in your home and you can find it. Once you do, purchase a sump pump from your local home goods store and follow the easy instructions to install in less than an hour. The beauty of wood turns homes into
E
architectural masterpieces
ver since humans stopped dwelling in caves and started living in huts made of tree branches, wood has been an indispensible structural and decorative residential material. Man’s house-building relationship with wood – historically, culturally and experientially – is deep, long and universal. In part that’s because wood is abundant, economical, durable and flexible. But our enduring love affair with wood is also due to the fact that, like us, each piece of timber is unique – its color, texture and grain are as individual as a human personality, so we keep discovering new aspects of its beauty and versatility to delight in. Architects, designers and homeowners are creatively using wood’s inimitable qualities to bring character, warmth and distinction to different parts of the modern home. In Denver, Colorado, Sun Mountain, Inc., a manufacturer of custom doors and flooring, used select-grade alder – a hardwood with a tight grain and few knotholes – for a traditional-style double front door. The elegantly rustic design, which combines solid alder with glass panels and metal hardware, is set off by the house’s dry-stacked limestone walls. “The double-pane glass doorlites are hermetically sealed for insulation against the Colorado winters,” says Ed Wright, Sun Mountain’s vice president of marketing. “And the door handles are bronze with a rubbed oil finish.” The total effect is at once substantial
and low-key – country style that’s sophisticated but with a sense of welcome that is so essential for a front entrance. An entry hall is an equally suitable space for the beguiling charms of hardwood. Behind the custom poplar front door of a new residence in Gladwyne, Pa. – a collaboration between Archer & Buchanan Architecture, Ltd., and E.B. Mahoney Builders, Inc. – the hall is a fine example of traditional, millwork-intensive style. Featuring a beautifully proportioned staircase, painted poplar paneling and wide-plank flooring, it was inspired by the work of architect, R. Brognard Okie, who designed many fine Colonial Revival houses in Philadelphia area between 1900 and 1945. The hall’s sense of Old World graciousness is further enhanced by the use of locally sourced red oak for the floors and stair treads. “The 24-inches to 32-inches wide planks come from a Bucks County, Pennsylvania, mill run by two brothers in their seventies,” says builder Ed Mahoney. “The workshop was surrounded by huge old-growth oak trees from which the planks were cut – they had to be ordered months in advance. The boards are plain – not tongue and groove – and stained with a satin finish. We left them in the house for a month to stabilize before installing them.” Wood can be used to create a sense of intimacy and ease and is demonstrated in the library of a very large retreat in Lake Keowee, S.C. Not only is the fireplace
surrounded by quarter-sawn oak mantle and trim, the whole room is paneled in the same hardwood, which is also used for the coffered ceiling and floors. The library’s intimate scale and traditional detailing were inspired by a ship captain’s quarters – a subtle reference to both the home’s lakeside location and the style in which the house is built. Designed by Atlanta-based architect Stephen Fuller and constructed by Gabriel Builders Inc., the imposing house is a playful take on the grand Shingle Style made famous by New England’s “summer cottages.” But Fuller made sure to include a
number of smaller, cozier rooms where the family would feel snug and comfortable, and he often used wood to achieve this. Such is the case in the library, where the wonderful familiarity of the oak makes the room a tranquil, reassuring haven. No matter what style of home you prefer, from the traditional to the modern, American hardwoods in all their diversity will allow you to realize that vision perfectly.

• LUXURIES from page 9
Towels of tranquility After a calming shower or bath, wrapping yourself in a soft, plush towel is a must. For the coziest feel, choose products made with 100 percent Egyptian cotton. This type of cotton has longer, more-fibrous threads, meaning towels are warmer, thicker and more absorbent. Bamboo cloths are also velvety soft. Towels can be used to help customize your space, too. Choose a color or pattern that enhances your decor, or add monograms for a personal touch. Lovely lighting The right lighting enhances the bathroom’s ambiance, while providing the brightness you need to style hair or apply makeup. Install fixtures and accessories from the same product suite to ensure your bath looks as fashionable as it is functional. From the traditional Waterhill collection to the modern Iso line, Moen provides everything you need to create a perfectly coordinated look. The brand’s portfolio of lavatory luxuries includes corresponding faucets, lighting, towel bars and tank levers in a variety of finishes, allowing you to design a cohesive, sophisticated space. For more information on Moen accessories or products, visit www.moen.com.
Versatile vanities Opulence and organization go hand-inhand with some of today’s newest vanities. Some pieces are equipped with convenient features like integrated nightlights and indrawer electrical outlets, to keep countertops clean and preserve the elegant style of the bathroom. Select a vanity with a granite or marble countertop to make the ultimate luxurious style statement, and complete the design by hanging a beautiful mirror atop it. If you have a double sink in your vanity, look for two matching mirrors or, for a touch of drama, install one that’s oversized. Fabulous fragrances Scents have the power to take our mood from tense to tranquil. Visit your local beauty boutique or high-end department store and treat yourself to a selection of scented candles, soaps and lotions that will help you de-stress and make your bathing routine feel luxe. Lavender, chamomile and cinnamon aromas are excellent fragrance selections to create a relaxing atmosphere. Light scented candles while you bathe to enhance your surroundings, or spice up your shower by using scented soaps. These ideas will inspire you to be living in the lap of luxury right in your own home. (BPT)
