The Whitewater Lake Ride loops around Whitewater Lake in the Southern or ending point to the ride with its fishing pier, walking path, gazebo, historical Kettle Moraine along a 20-mile route. Cravath Lakefront Park is a great starting buildings, multi-purpose building, restrooms and parking.

Tour Whitewater Lake on a bicycle The Whitewater Lake Ride is a scenic 20-mile ride around Whitewater Lake in the Southern Kettle Moraine. The family friendly ride takes anywhere from one to three hours to complete, depending on the cyclists. The ride loops around Whitewater Lake, starting and ending in downtown Whitewater at Cravath Lakefront. The park features a fishing pier, walking path, gazebo, historical buildings, multi-purpose building, restrooms, and parking. With its proximity to the conveniences located in downtown Whitewater, this is a great location to start your ride. Another point of interest on the ride is Trippe Lake Park, which lies on the northwest shore of Tripp Lake. Trippe Lake is held back from Cravath Lake by a dam. The undeveloped shores and wildlife help to give Trippe Lake a wilderness feel. Along with the dam and small fishing pier, you can find parking and restrooms. Locals have been coming to the natural spring along the trail ride regularly to capture the cool, clear water bubbling up from

this hand-dug well. Top off your water bottle before heading out and around the lake. Also along the way is the Whitewater Lake Recreation Area that encompasses Rice Lake and the surrounding shores. Only a thin strip of land separates Rice Lake from Whitewater Lake. The Recreation Area features a picnic area, boat launch, playground, restrooms, and water, as well as parking and camping. Whitewater Lake anchors the southern end of the 30mile long Kettle Moraine State Park Sourthern Unit, which has 20,000 plus acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, pine woods and hardwood forests. It is home to the statewide Ice Age trail, Old World Wisconsin, and the largest wet prairie east of the Mississippi River-3,500-acre Scuppernong River Habitat Area.

Other bike trails

Bugline Trail The Bugline Bike Trail owes its existence to the quarries near Lannon. Trains once hauled famed Lannon Stone from the deep limestone pits which still

operate today. A look down into the quarries from the trail is an impressive sight. At the west end of the trail is the tiny village of Merton. The old mill there still operates, and the adjacent mill house is an architectural gem. For more information call 262/548-7801. Fox River Trail The six-mile Fox River Trail runs through the city of Waukesha along the Fox River starting on the north end of Frame Park and continuing south along the east side of the river to Fox River Park. The trail surface is mainly asphalt with a few brick sections downtown. Water and restroom facilities can be found at several parks along the trail system. For more information visit www.midwestroads.com. Glacial Drumlin State Trail East Running between Wisconsin’s two largest urban areas, the Glacial Drumlin State Trail stretches for 52 miles through farmlands, glacial topography and several small towns from

Cottage Grove to Waukesha. It’s the easiest trail through the Kettle Moraine. The trail is on an abandoned rail corridor, except for a 1.5-mile section northeast of Jefferson, which currently uses public roads as the trail route. For more information, call (262) 646-3025.

For more information call (414) 263-8559. John Muir/Emma Carlin Trails Over the years, the Muir and Carlin trails have been continually improved to cope with the intense use that fills their parking lots on any good riding weekend. A big part of the attraction is mostly one-way trails in the challenging terrain of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The rugged terrain, hills and kettle-like depressions make for some tough riding and may not be for everyone. But for riders looking for challenging, technical riding – this is the place. Daily or annual State Park Vehicle Admission required, plus a daily or annual State Trail Pass. For more information, call the Kettle Moraine State Forest, Southern Unit at (262) 594-6200 or visit dnr.wi.gov. Lake Country Recreation Trail Located on the former Milwaukee Watertown Interurban Railway. The 8-mile recreation trail stretches between the Landsberg Center trailhead (just north of Interstate 94 on Golf Road, west of Highway T) and Cushing Park in the City of Delafield. For more information call (262) 548-7801. Lake Geneva Canopy Tours Lake Geneva Canopy Tours has almost nine miles of hiking and biking trails from beginner, intermediate, to expert level. The

BICYCLE from page 3

Arbor Trails single track winds through the forest and features plenty of obstacles on the intermediate and expert level routes including ladder bridges, jumps, and switch- backs. For more information visit www. lakegenevacanopytours.com. New Berlin Recreation Trail The New Berlin Recreation Trail is a 7-mile multi-use trail that extends from South 124th Street just south of Greenfield Avenue (Highway 59) at the Milwaukee/Waukesha County Line to Springdale Road in Waukesha. For more information call (262) 548-7801.

Historical landmarks along the Whitewater Lake Bike Path are a great way to turn an afternoon out with the kids into a fun history lesson.

Seven Waters Trail Scenic trail stretches more than 17 miles between Burlington and Muskego Lake and into Waukesha County. Three existing trails, Burlington, Waterford-Wind Lake and Norway, were stitched together to form Racine County’s system of bike paths. For more information visit publicworks.racineco.com/ biking. White River State Trail This 12-mile trail follows a former rail corridor as it travels between Elkhorn and Burlington, passing numerous bridges, scenic vistas, quaint towns, farmlands and wetlands. The trail is operated by Walworth County and is within five miles of Lake Geneva and Big Foot Beach State Park. The western end of the trail begins at County Highway H near Elkhorn. The eastern end of the trail is at Spring Valley Road near the Walworth-Racine county line, just west of Burlington. A daily or annual State Trail Pass is required for riders 16 and older. Minneiska Ski Team gears up for another run By Tracy Ouellette EDITOR

The Minneiska Ski Team in Whitewater is busy getting ready for the 2015 water-ski performance and competition season. Last year, the team placed sixth in the Wisconsin State show team championships D2 division and two members of the team also earned individual recognition. Erin Doolittle finished among the top five in the swivel competition – similar to ballet on water – and according to team representatives, made a 720 spin “look effortless and beautiful.” Brandon Schleicher brought home the D2 outstanding male skier award, “wowing the crowd and judges with amazing tricks performed during his wakeboard and barefoot acts.” This season the team’s theme is “Eat, Sleep, Ski, Repeat,” which will highlight some of the team’s best and most entertaining performances. “We are featuring all of our favorite themes, skits, and dances from years past and wrapping it all into one show of fan favorites,” co-show director Susi Schleicher said. “It’ll be a fast-paced montage of all the things Minneiska does best.” Schleicher, who co-directs the show with Shawnda Peters, said the team has evolved over the four decades of its existence. “In that time kids have grown, skiers have moved on and skiing styles have changed,” Schleicher said. “The one thing that remains constant is family.

“What’s really special this year is that a big portion of our skiers are skiing with their own children in the show. We have several alum who are reconnecting with

Minneiska because their kids want to ski and they want their kids to grow up with the memories that they had on this team. We are small, but we’re all heart. That’s something special.” The team opens its performance season Memorial Day weekend with a noon performance on Sunday, May 24, at the Scenic Ridge Campground in Whitewater.

About the team The Minneiska Ski Team is in its 41st season. Some of the team’s favorite acts include the 2-4-2 human pyramid, a 4-person around the boat team, strap doubles, trios, barefooting and more. The team does not charge spectators to watch their shows. The ski team is part of the Whitewater Lake Sports Club. It all began in the summer of 1974. On July 21 the Minneiska Ski Team performed its first ski show at the Lion’s Club chicken barbecue picnic. The ski team was well received and soon moved to the Laursen’s TC Campground. The Whitewater Lake Sports Club was initially formed to include many sports, but water show skiing became the favorite sport of choice. The name Minneiska was fitting because it is the Indian name for white water. As Minneiska grew in name and numbers it became very popular and began competing at the Lamb’s EARLENE FREDERICK Whitewater Lake Breeze Farm tournament, the Wisconsin State The Minneiska Ski Team ballet line is one of the featured attractions of the Tournament, and Show Ski Nationals. team’s summer performances. The ski team begins its 2015 season May 24 with For more information, visit a noon performance at the Scenic Ridge Campground in Whitewater.
