Partials, Dentures and Dental Implant Solutions for Mature Women Replacement teeth can sometimes be the best option for patients who are missing some or all of their natural teeth. They allow us to eat and chew food properly in the absence of natural teeth. How well our teeth fit together and chew determines how many vitamins we get from the foods we eat. It also impacts how well we are able to nourish our bodies to live stronger, longer and healthier lives. What happens when my teeth don’t fit well? Impact on the bone by continuous wear and “hitting” of a denture or partials against the

jaw every time you eat can make the bone underneath the denture shrink away. This causes the replacement teeth to become loose and slip. It may create the need for using a sticky paste or other means to hold the teeth in place. Slipping teeth can make eating certain foods very difficult. How can dental implants help Dental Implants can be placed under your replacement teeth. Implants have offered the possibility of fully replacing teeth for more than 50 years and are very safe, and very effective. When you make a denture or partial stable by “snapping” it onto dental implants,

your periodontist can help to provide a better level of comfort for you. It can create a new strength for eating the foods you love. In fact, dental implants are very much like your natural teeth. They are quite easy to get used to, and they can reduce the amount of stress to the bone and jaw by helping provide an anchor for support. The implant acts as a natural root to help prevent additional bone deterioration and help to deliver long lasting function. Does everyone qualify? This depends on the amount of bone loss that has already taken place. If the denture has been in place for many years and the ridge of bone under it is very thin, you may need to have a special scan done to decide if you are a candidate for the procedure. This scan will also look for any other defects that may be present to make sure you are healthy. A 3D scan is the highest level of care a periodontist can perform for you. How long does a patient have to go without teeth? Never! In many cases, the denture is fitted to the implants the same day as the implants are placed. If the implants cannot be connected the same day, you will still have your replacement teeth, allowing you to smile. This is highly dependent on the amount of bone present and your unique situation. Do dental implants hurt? Most patients have little to no discomfort. The surgery is done in one day, typically in about two hours. There are sedation options available for this procedure for those patients who want to relax through the procedure.

6

Is treatment expensive? The short answer is, yes. Implant treatment, if done well, M a rc h / A p r i l 2 0 2 0 | FAIRFAXWOM AN.COM

is by far the least expensive replacement option. The cost of treatment varies depending on the number of implants, if a new denture needs to be made, if the patient desires sedation, or if there needs to be more bone added to have a good result. Costs are variable and should be weighed against factors such as the education of the doctor, the results from other patient experiences, and the quality of the product you are receiving. There are many types of implants and many treatments. It is best to discuss your personal situation with a highly trained implant periodontist. Make an appointment with a periodontist today to discover the difference dental implants can make for you! Call us at 301-638-4867 or 703-894-4867. We are always happy to provide a no-charge phone consultation about your unique needs.

Own Your March Madness With winter giving way to spring, many of us are hitting the trails. Whether you are getting ready to run a spring race, training for a fall marathon or just getting back into summer swimsuit shape, you can benefit from a sports massage. Muscles only do one thing, CONTRACT. If your muscles are already tight and contracted, they will test weak as their ability to contract is diminished. Injury is far more likely to occur with tight muscle as the muscle’s ability to stretch is compromised, and it is more likely that you develop tendinosis or other injury at the attachment site. By getting a sports massage, you bring your muscles into a place of better balance, which then allows them to perform better when you are exercising.

A good sports massage therapist will take several things into account: • The sport you are training in and what muscle groups are being challenged. • Where you are in a training schedule, for example, the number of days to your event, if this is a day off, and if you just exerted yourself. • Hydration and nutrition may be discussed, as well as what issues you may be having. • Gear. Are your shoes appropriately suited to your

training needs or are they in need of replacement? Has your bike been fitted to you? To optimize the results of a sports massage, you may wish to do the following: • Come in after you have exercised and then rest up for the remainder of the day. • Eat a light meal before the session. • Make sure you are hydrated. Your session will allow trapped toxins to be released into your bloodstream and your body will need extra fluids to help flush them out. • Continue to drink water postsession to facilitate flushing thus preventing soreness. • Schedule a sports massage a few days before an event and follow up with a post-event session. Come in to see any of our 10 therapists who offer sports massage: • Amanda • Carolyn • Elizabeth • Esi • Giselle • Heather

• Jette • Joanna • Lisa • Stephanie Happy injury-free training!

The No Downtime Lift There is a new cutting-edge technology gaining the attention of celebrities and the media. This technology is Ultherapy which is microfocused ultrasound technology that combines ultrasound imaging with acoustic energy to visualize tissue under the skin and deliver precise energy at the right depth. The device is FDAcleared for lifting and tightening the skin on the face and neck. Celebrities such as Christie Brinkley, Jennifer Aniston and Kathie Lee Gifford have all received Ultherapy treatment and seen excellent results. The energy that Ultherapy delivers is directed to the tissue areas that need lifting, firming and tightening. As we age, our faces begin to sag, the jawline begins to lose definition and wrinkles appear. There are risk factors that contribute to the acceleration of aging, such as smoking, excessive sun exposure, genetics and an unhealthy diet. Until recently, the only approach to lift the skin was a surgical facelift. However, Ultherapy is a great alternative for those who want lifting of the face and neck without surgery.

Until recently, the only approach to lift the skin was a surgical facelift. However, Ultherapy is a great alternative for those who want lifting of the face and neck without surgery. One can achieve natural looking face lift and neck lift results without the downtime from surgery.

Treatment options are as follows: • Lift the skin on the neck and under the chin • Lift and tighten the jaw line • Lift the brows and tighten the skin around the eyes • Improve wrinkles on the décolleté (chest)

Another benefit to this technology is that there is no downtime; one can do this treatment as a “lunchtime lift.” Results may take anywhere from 60 to 90 days and when the results kick in, you can see that the jawline is well defined, the neck lifts and the brows firm. Please feel free to call us at 703-273-0001 to see if you are a candidate.

Varicose Veins – More Than Meets the Eye Nobody likes the look of bulging veins or spidery marks beneath the skin – and yet one in four Americans suffer from varicose or spider veins. Many will avoid treatment, assuming these veins are just a cosmetic issue. However, varicose and spider veins reflect an underlying medical condition called venous insufficiency, also known as vein disease. Left untreated, these veins won’t just look bad – they can feel bad and get worse. Some unexpected symptoms of vein disease include leg swelling, heaviness, cramping, restlessness, pain, itching, and fatigue. Vein disease also can progress to cause skin changes, venous ulcers, or even make you more susceptible to Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). March is DVT Awareness month. A DVT is a dangerous blood clot that can form in the leg veins or in other places in the body. According to the American Heart Association, about 600,000 people in the United States are hospitalized each year for DVTs. This condition, with its risk of

10

pulmonary embolism (when the blood clot moves to the lungs), may be the most preventable cause of death among people hospitalized today. It is estimated that 300,000 Americans die each year from a DVT-related pulmonary embolism. Clots form when circulation in the legs is hindered by any number of

M a rc h / A p r i l 2 0 2 0 | FAIRFAXWOM AN.COM

factors including thick blood, genetic or hormonal factors, slow blood flow, inactivity, or damaged veins. This is where vein disease comes in. Vein disease occurs when the valves in your leg veins become inefficient at circulating blood upward toward the heart. The valves fail or leak, and blood pools and stagnates. Venous blood carries waste products, so when it pools, it causes chronic inflammation. This damages the vein further, causing an increased risk of DVT. It’s a vicious cycle, though, as the DVT damages the vein wall as well. Vein disease and DVTs have similar risk factors and initial symptoms (leg pain and swelling) and go-hand-inhand for causation and recurrence. Both conditions are most common in adults over age 60 but can occur at any age. Blood is more likely to clot, and vein valves are more likely to fail, for moms and pregnant women, smokers, longdistance travelers and those taking birth control pills, amongst other risk factors. At the Center for Vein Restoration, our initial patient consultation includes a comprehensive visit with the doctor and a full ultrasound scan of the legs, which detects not only vein disease, but also DVTs. This

evaluation is typically covered by your insurance as with any medical consultation. If you have a DVT, it’s important to know quickly. Visiting our center can not only help you avoid you a costly and timeconsuming trip to the emergency room, but also get you started on the appropriate treatment plan on the same day if needed. If you are suffering from vein disease, we offer the widest range of advanced treatment options, including non-thermal modalities. All our methods are fast, minimally invasive, require no sedation, and are covered by most insurances. Walk in, walk out, and continue with your daily activities. Don’t let leg pain or unsightly veins go unchecked. I have specialized in this field for many years and bring experience and a gentle touch to the process. Take care of yourself. Schedule a scan and evaluation with myself or one of the many board-certified physicians serving the DMV. Call 1-800-FIX-LEGS (1-800-349-5347) or visit us on the web at centerforvein.com.

Seema Kumar, MD, MPP is board-certified in venous and lymphatic disease and has been cited as a “Top Doc” in Consumer’s Checkbook. She has authored publications in a range of topics from preventive medicine to nutrition to patient satisfaction measures. She trained at the University of Chicago and Georgetown University Medical Center. She has practiced exclusively in treating vein disease since 2007 and served as a regional medical director for a large national venous practice. The mission of Center for Vein Restoration is to improve lives in the communities we serve by providing state-of-the-art vascular care in a compassionate and affordable manner. would it be to be able to say, “I’ve never had a cavity!”? First, let’s focus on the risk factors. These include inadequate access to fluoride, poor oral hygiene, frequent access to sugars and acids, previous cavity experience, reduced saliva flow, orthodontic appliances, and infrequent professional dental care. Luckily, there are ways to help prevent detail cavities occurrences, like regular routine dental visits that provide preventive strategies such as dental sealants, topical fluoride, plaque removal, and restorative treatment if needed. It’s also important to promote a healthy diet with limited snacking and limit sugars and acidic foods and liquids, drink fluoridated water, brush with fluoridated toothpaste twice a day, as well as floss and use anti-cavity mouth rinse nightly. Gingivitis & Periodontal Disease Young children typically aren’t affected by gum disease, but starting at about age 10, we see gingivitis on the rise. Hormonal changes as our children reach puberty are a big culprit, however external factors are usually the main reason for gum disease. Factors including poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, oral piercings, pregnancy, and eating disorders are a few risk factors for gum disease in adolescence. Many of the prevention techniques for gum disease overlap the prevention techniques for dental cavities, but in addition to those, an antibacterial mouthwash can help for children age 12 and up (i.e. Listerine). Tobacco/Marijuana Use Social influence and risk-taking increases during the teenage years, and this leads to dangerous habits that can affect way more than teeth. Tobacco and marijuana have harmful effects on the oral cavity and can lead to tooth staining, halitosis, plaque build-up, and in rare cases oral cancer.

Oral Piercings Infections, blood-borne diseases, swelling, prolonged bleeding, fractured teeth, speech difficulties, and an increased risk for gum disease are just a few reasons why oral piercings are a dangerous idea. Don’t get them! Eating Disorders Another common issue with our teens are image concerns, which may lead to eating disorders such as anorexia and/or bulimia. This matter is one that should be brought up to your adolescent’s primary care doctor or dentist. Eating disorders can cause teeth erosion, dental decay, gum disease and teeth sensitivity. Nutrition Finally, I’d like to stress the importance of nutrition. Sodas and energy drinks have tons of sugars in them, and many have the potential to erode teeth due to the acidity of the drinks. Frequent snacking, poor food choices (such as candy and simple carbs) can also lead to dental decay. Healthy snacks such as fruits and cheeses are ideal, and of course you can’t go wrong with good old water. Let’s set our teens up for great oral health and a lifetime worth of smiles!

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops”

This inspiring quote by Henry Adams summarizes the preeminent mission of The European Academy of Arts’ faculty. Our outstanding teachers are accomplished, world-class musicians with college, graduate and postgraduate degrees from leading American and European music schools. Winners of international competitions, performing artists, teachers, and mentors, these incredible individuals guide every student with the utmost care and attention. They play a significant role in the mental, spiritual and emotional development of students. We are proud of our exceptional faculty!

The European Academy of Arts is led by Dr. Edvinas Minkstimas and Natalia Nelson. They both received comprehensive music education in their native European countries and have over 15 years of excellence in teaching and artistic performance.

Quality of education should not be compromised for any reason

Choosing the right school for your talented child or your own enjoyment is no simple task. It could mean the difference between years of fruitless lessons and excelling at a rapid pace. Studying with unprofessional teachers might seem like a bargain, but the lack of results after years of lessons proves that the student’s precious time, potential, and family budget are wasted. Some people who would like to study music and art do not realize the difference between true education and its wasteful, even harmful imitations. In the last few years, our team visited many local music and art schools in the Northern Virginia area. To our surprise, we found their curriculum, facilities, teachers, and most importantly, care for the students sorely lacking. Lessons often took place in churches and spaces neither suitable, nor built and equipped for proper education. Instead of actual pianos, students practiced on plastic keyboards in cramped and uncomfortable classrooms. The teachers of such “schools” had neither a music degree, nor performing and teaching experience. In these poor conditions quality education is just not possible.

RENT OUR WONDERFUL MULTIPURPOSE MUSIC AND ART THEATER We welcome musicians and art admirers to our beautiful venue featuring our magnificent grand piano. It’s an ideal space to rent for different events, from recitals and concerts to lectures and business meetings. We are also able to make high-quality sound and video recordings per your request. Teaching is an art of thought and reflection

At The European Academy of Arts, we offer a custom-tailored study path, which matches the students’ needs perfectly. Every lesson, conducted by our superior teachers, is a true masterclass! They inspire, motivate and ignite students’ interest in learning. At the Academy, students and teachers form a great team and enjoy an amazing journey to artistic success together. Every student is treated uniquely, and receives mentoring, understanding and encouragement. The professionalism of our devoted teachers makes the studies of music and art an irreplaceable and joyful part of students’ daily lives. Every student gains confidence and feels proud of their own artistic achievements. Our students practice with cheers, not tears!

How to Assess a Music and Art School’s Professionalism In order to assess the professionalism of a given school, one only needs to visit the famous online platform for job seekers, Indeed. You will discover that many of the local music and art schools offer teaching positions to candidates who are neither experienced nor properly educated. Make sure to stay away from dishonest scam schools’ ads that say, “some experience is preferred,” “training is available upon teacher’s request,” and “the candidate must demonstrate basic understanding of music concepts.” Do not trust your education in the hands of a charlatan who may waste your time, money and destroy your dream of becoming an accomplished artist.

If we are to hope for a society of culturally literate people, music must be a vital part of our children’s education. - American Cellist, Yo-Yo-Ma

Overcoming fear and inspiring new purpose

Witnessing a student who lost inspiration and joy for learning is always a sad moment. Quite often, such a lack of enthusiasm is caused by a teacher’s lack of competence. Unfortunately, we see unhappy students who received unprofessional instruction on a daily basis.

A couple of months ago, an eight-year-old boy came to the Academy for a guitar lesson. His mother explained that her son took guitar lessons for two-and-a-half years at one of the local music shops. According to her, the child learned no skill, lost interest, and worst of all, hurt his wrist in the process. The boy was afraid to go to the class, fearing that the pain may come back. Fortunately, our teacher was able to not only overcome the student’s fear, but also inspire him to resume playing guitar. A couple of lessons later, the boy was able to play several songs, improved his technique and began to write music! His father also enjoys studies of guitar together with his son. It is quite a story to learn from! The damage created by negligent teachers was colossal, but it can be prevented or reversed by our dedicated and experienced faculty. Do not make the same mistake — choose the best school and learn from true experts.

Dr. Edvinas Minkstimas is a renowned artist, concert pianist, composer and master teacher. He graduated from two of the best music conservatories in the world – the Paris Conservatory (CNSMDP) (Artist Diploma) and The Juilliard School (DMA, MM) in New York.

for learning. For our student’s artistic growth, we built a wonderful music and art theater, an ideal venue for regular performances. In order to inspire our students’ interest in music and fine art, we create plentiful performing opportunities, such as recitals, concerts, workshops, seminars, competitions, and masterclasses with famous artists. Our students feel inspired and admired, performing on the “home stage!” An individual teacher cannot provide a great venue and many performing opportunities for the students. Typically, a music teacher is limited to organizing two yearly recitals. Students are unable to develop confidence, overcome stage fright and gain valuable performing experience. Some parents choose teachers who come to their homes for convenience. Usually, they are poorly educated, and constantly race the busy traffic. No teachers of superior qualifications travel to students’ homes. Beware!

Instrument quality is vital

It’s important to realize that the quality of instrument carries extreme significance for a student of any age or level. If you would like to paint a nice picture, you will need a fine brush. If you would like to learn the art of piano playing, you will need a fine piano.

Remember: the geniuses of classical music, such as Sergei Rachmaninoff, Martha Argerich, Vladimir Horowitz, and others studied with great teachers in superior schools. Be selective in choosing the best music and art school for your family. Make every day of your life an artistic masterpiece together with The European Academy of Arts!

Unfortunately, most music schools do not care for students’ needs. In order to save money, they feature cheap plastic keyboards. Students develop bad habits, wrong body and hand posture, undermining playing ability. Students who have plastic keyboards at home suffer the most. They have no chance to experience the benefits of playing a real piano, thus making their goal to become an accomplished pianist unattainable. The Academy proudly presents the highest-quality grand pianos for each student. Even our youngest pianists play on quality instruments, developing a delicate connection with the instrument. Students feel like true artists — an experience, lasting a lifetime!

Local Artist Shares Her Creative Process

QA &

WITH JENNIFER ALLEVATO

lexandria artist Jennifer Allevato believes art is meant to be shared with others. Just like herself, her work tends to have an inherent softness and warmth to it. With each brushstroke, Jennifer strives to create pieces that inspire a quiet moment in a loud and busy world. In a way, every painting is a journal entry, she says – a hope, a memory, a portrait – just in different form. With nearly two decades of experience, her work favors florals and focuses on color and line over realism. Jennifer’s art and design work has been shown in both the U.S. and abroad. It has been sold through Anthropologie and was featured on the set of Home & Family on the Hallmark Channel for three seasons. We sat down with Jennifer to learn more about her artistic journey.

March/A pri l 2020 | FA IR FA X WOMA N .C OM

21

How do you describe your work? I create colorful post-impressionist inspired paintings that have a focus on color, line, and texture over realism. I love being able to see the layers and process of creation within my work. What is the creative process behind your work? I tend to work in collections or series of work, which means creating a body of work, usually 10 – 30 pieces at a time, all similar in subject matter and style. Starting from a photograph as a base, the composition and colors are developed over time as the mark-making happens. I really let the process and gradual layering

of color dictate where the piece goes, which is why I love being able to see my process within the finished work. Where do you find your inspiration? I find inspiration in so many places: nature, interior design, fashion and fabrics, and even walking through shops and seeing pretty displays or interesting textures. Do you have a favorite painter/artist who has inspired your work? Hands down, the post-impressionists like Matisse and Bonnard, but I feel especially drawn to Van Gogh. We share a birth date, so I feel a deep connection to him and

his work, and I am so intrigued by the way he saw the world and was able to capture it on a canvas. How has your art changed over the years?

You can find more of Jennifer’s work at

jenniferallevato.com

My work definitely continues to evolve and change as I experience life and grow as a person and an artist. As my inspirations change, you’ll see that influence my work as I (hopefully) continue to be better at my craft and discover new mediums, tools, and ways of working. What piece of your work embodies your true style and reflects your artistic tendencies? I find the biggest breakthroughs and moments of clarity while working on my large mixed media pieces. Working large isn’t always practical, but it feels so freeing! Having a background in theatre and costume design, I often layer commercial clothing pattern paper in my paintings; it’s like putting a bit of my own history in each piece, and the textures created are always a fun surprise. There’s so much in art that we can’t actually control, from the way paint dries and reacts with other elements on the canvas to the way our work is perceived by our audience. I’m always discovering something new about myself that comes across on the canvas.

22

(continued next page) M a rc h / A p r i l 2 0 2 0 | FAIRFAXWOM AN.COM

Was there a particular moment when you decided to follow your path as an artist? After working in theatre professionally, I really missed being able to express myself through my own work and started creating small mixed media and watercolor pieces on the side just for fun. I eventually worked up the nerve to start selling my work, and after just a few months I knew that my true passion was in painting. There’s no direct path to a career in art like there is in other professions and college majors, so I always felt as if I had to manage the conflict between my passions with the realities of life. Eventually I found a way to reconcile the two.

“There’s so much in art that we can’t actually control, from the way paint dries and reacts with other elements on the canvas to the way our work is perceived by our audience. I’m always discovering something new about myself that comes across on the canvas.” If you were not an artist, what might have you become? I really don’t think I had any choice but to become an artist. Every time I tried to veer my path away from art, I found myself coming back. I’ve worked in law firms, in retail management, in restaurants and bookshops, in libraries, and in theatre and design. It was just meant to be. What advice would you give to a young artist hoping to make a career out of being an artist? Take business classes! I always say this, but it took me years to fully grasp that selling my art meant that I was a small business owner. You can’t actually have a career in art if you don’t know how to sell your art and run a business. What is your greatest pleasure in life? Is it weird if I say coffee? Where were you born and raised? Where did you go to school and what did you study? I grew up in central Ohio and my family moved to Charleston, West Virginia when

I was in high school. I attended West Virginia Wesleyan College for undergrad and received a degree in Studio Art with a minor in Psychology (and briefly considered a career in Art Therapy). I ended up going to grad school at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem and got my Master of Fine Arts in Costume Design, thinking it would have a more stable career path than fine art. I moved to Alexandria right after graduation; I have always loved the DC area ever since I was a kid, and it was my dream to live here. I love the change of seasons, the mild-ish winters, the history, and the mix of culture and nature. What are a few of your favorite spots in Alexandria? The Torpedo Factory, of course, and just being along the waterfront is always kind of exciting. I grew up in a very land-locked area, so it’s still a novelty to me to be able to see boats passing by, and when I need to feel refreshed, I love driving along and walking along the Mount Vernon Trail. My husband and I really enjoy Captain Gregory’s for special drinks, Momo for sushi, and Del Ray Café for brunch. March/A pri l 2020 | FA IR FA X WOMA N .C OM

Could Mediation Save Your Marriage? Family mediators get a lot of phone calls from people figuring out how to handle separation or divorce. Often, I wish they had called us three years earlier, when one of them first realized that their relationship was in serious trouble. Then, they could have taken part in marriage mediation, discussing ways to rewrite the rules of their marriage so that they would be glad to stay together. Now, it is too late for that. Sadly, many people do not know that marriage mediation exists. It does. Marriage mediation is not the same as marriage counseling. The goal is to plan how to modify some behaviors, not to make deep psychological changes. As mediators, we do not diagnose mental health problems or help people heal from traumatic

experiences. For that kind of help, you need a skilled therapist. Our focus is on the future. What would you like your marriage to be like during the next year? What do you want to do differently tomorrow? Very often, a couple’s stress and unhappiness come partly from misunderstandings that arise from inadequate communication skills.

We help clients listen to each other better and express their thoughts more clearly. Clients in divorce mediation sometimes tell us, “If we had just known how to talk like this before, we would not be getting a divorce.” We can also teach conflict management and conflict resolution skills for future use. And, of course, we get down to issues. We help couples address areas of friction in their relationships and develop their own personalized guidelines for handling recurring challenges. Common areas of conflict are finances, child-rearing, household chores, and sex.

Finances • Do you want to have joint or separate accounts or a combination? • Who has to earn how much? • Who gets to spend how much? For what purposes? • When do you have to consult each other before spending money?

MARRIAGE? DIVORCE? CO-PARENTING? Get personal, private, professional help resolving family conflicts peacefully and constructively.

Keeping Families Out of Court

Raising the Children • Who feeds them and takes care of them? • When is one spouse the primary parent on duty? When is the other? • Who arranges for day care and sitters? • Who helps with homework? • Who takes care of health care appointments?

Household Responsibilities • Who buys food, prepares food, and cleans up? • Who takes care of your yard? • Who cleans the house?

• How often will you have sex? • When is initiating sex a good idea? When is it not? • How do you make decisions about sex?

Couples often fall into habits with one person not realizing that the other is unhappy about those habits. You may find that discussing these questions with your spouse or living-together partner will help you decide together how you want to answer them. If they are hard to discuss on your own at home, then consider calling a professional family mediator. Mediation provides a safe, supportive, confidential setting for creating agreements about how your marriage will work. Dr. Colin has written two books: Human Attachment (1996), a comprehensive guide to attachment theory and research, and, with Rebecca Martin, The Guide to Low-Cost Divorce in Virginia (2014). She is a former President of the Academy of Professional Family Mediators. For a free consultation with Dr. Colin, email mediatorQ@gmail.com. A mediator’s primary responsibility is to facilitate a constructive discussion. Often that means helping each person hear the other person’s perspective. Most people have a hard time listening when they are in the middle of a dispute. Sometimes the mediator needs to help people stay calm enough to think clearly. Sometimes we help people recognize why they think a certain outcome is crucial and find other ways to meet the need that underlies their preferred outcome.

Q: WHEN DID YOU FIRST LEARN OF THE BENEFITS OF MEDIATION?

I learned a little about how good mediation could be when I was getting divorced in the 1990s. I learned much more when I volunteered to mediate for a friend who had been in a custody battle for more than a year and a half. His ex-wife decided to give the process a chance even though she could reasonably have expected me to be biased in his favor. The process in that case was long, hard, stressful, and exhausting, but also successful. My friend came to an agreement with his ex on a custody and visitation schedule they could both live with. Their kids no longer had to live in an emotional war zone. Despite the parents’ history of hostility and frequent court hearings, they never went back to court.

Q: HAVE YOU HAD A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WHERE MEDIATION HELPED?

Mediation helped my husband and me finalize some decisions about when our children would spend time with each of us. And, of course, I have had hundreds of experiences seeing mediation help our clients.

tips ps TRY ALTERNATIVES FOR MANAGING PERIODS Most tampons and pads are filled with harmful chemicals and even those that are organic are still disposable and wasteful. Instead, a favorite eco-friendly option is period underwear that are highly absorbent and comfortable. You may have to pack an extra pair if you’re out all day, but it’s no larger than a pad in your purse. They just get washed separately. For overnight or postpartum, reusable pads are the best, never sticky, just soft. For those who prefer tampons, consider switching to a menstrual cup.

ADVOCATE Personal change is most effective if accompanied by institutional change. So, don’t forget to get out there as an individual or as part of a group, and help advocate for environmentally friendly business and governmental policies. Make your voice heard, and help make the world a better, healthier, and greener place.

BY ROSA HANCE

to a More Responsible, Sustainable Lifestyle CHANGE UP YOUR LAWN CARE ROUTINE

Think for a minute about how much time, energy and money a person can spend on lawn care – mowing, leaf blowing, pesticides; the hours and dollars add up fast. Cut down on lawn acreage by expanding garden beds, planting native shade trees, or consider a no-mow zone that you can sprinkle with native wildflower seeds. If you must mow or remove leaves, go electric. Running a leaf blower or lawn mower motor for one hour releases more pollution than an 8-hour car ride. And definitely skip the pesticides and herbicides, even with those weeds between the cracks of the driveway. Vinegar and a spray bottle will do the trick for those spots!

REDUCE AND REUSE In the old “reduce, reuse, recycle” adage, we tend to take for granted the first two. Meanwhile, the river of disposable items that flow through our lives piles up (literally) in our household waste. Opting for things like reusable cloth napkins and towels instead of paper, or tempered glass food containers instead of throwaway plastic containers, can seriously reduce your landfill footprint and will save money in the long run. For food and yard waste, try composting at home or asking your HOA, condo association or apartment management to institute community composting. This reduces landfill impact and allows nutrients to cycle back into healthy soil.

A Casual Chamber Concert and Fantastic Season Finale The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra (ASO) concludes its 20192020 this spring with diverse programming, a world premiere and a casual chamber orchestra concert. Music Director James Ross will complete his second season with the ASO, introducing new works and innovative concert formats, and rediscovering and reintroducing forgotten and underrepresented composers. The ASO will present Brandenburgers & Brew, a casual experience for concert attendees including a post-concert reception. The program is on Friday, March 20, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Old Town Alexandria. As a follow up to last year’s performance, the ASO will perform Bach’s Brandenburg

Concertos No. 3 and No. 6 with principals from the orchestra. The form is concerto grosso combining solo instruments with accompanying players called the ripieno. Concerto No. 3 features all members of the group while Concerto No. 6 features two violas. Bach dedicated the six concertos in 1721 to Christian Ludwig-

Margrave of Brandenburg, and they are still regarded as some of the finest orchestral compositions from the Baroque era. “Last year’s concert sold out prior to the performance,” says Maestro Ross. “People were attracted to the program— who doesn’t love Bach? — the wonderful acoustics at St. Paul’s, and the beer. Great music in a great venue with some surprises is what ASO does best.” Also on the program are selections from masterpieces by Händel. Concerto in Alexander’s Feast is derived from the larger vocal work, celebrating Alexander the Great. “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” is an excerpt from the oratorio Solomon, and has been used in popular culture, including the 2012 Olympic Games. The season finale on Sat., May 16, 2020 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 17, 2020 at 3 p.m. features the premiere of an original work by Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s principal percussionist Brian Prechtl. Commissioned by Classical Movements Eric Helms New Music Program, Prechtl has created Tribute, a composition integrating members of the orchestra and students from Sympatico, ASO’s award-winning music education program. Prechtl was inspired by Beethoven and the Sympatico students themselves while composing the commission. “When Maestro Ross approached me, he asked that the piece commemorate Beethoven’s 250th birthday, and I drew much of the thematic material from his third and fifth symphonies,” says Prechtl. “The students were engaged and dynamic partners throughout the process. They wrote all the text for the vocal parts and contributed melodic ideas. I am grateful to

share this process and excited about seeing the pieces come together for the premiere.” The program also includes Three Latin-American Dances by Gabriela Lena Frank, which Frank drew from Bernstein as well as her own South American heritage and explores her many influences. The finale concludes with RimskyKorsakov’s Scheherazade, relating four exploits from One Thousand and One Nights. Although the composer was fiercely Russian, the narrative is among the most famous of Middle Eastern tales. The familiar violin melody symbolizes Scheherazade herself, which will feature ASO Concertmaster, Claudia Chudacoff.

The Alexandria Symphony is a fully professional orchestra drawing from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region’s wealth of musical talent. The ASO performs Saturday evenings at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center and Sunday matinees at the George Washington Masonic Memorial. Adult tickets start at $20, and the ASO offers discounts for seniors, students and military personnel and veterans. All youth (18 and under) tickets are $5. For tickets and more information, visit www.alexsym.org or call 703-548-0885.

TRANSITIONING OUT OF COLORING

YOUR HAIR BY MONA HARB

There are many reasons women decide to stop coloring their hair. It could be due to health concerns, time, financial limitations, or just a desire to make a statement and embrace your natural beauty. However, making a smooth transition from a regular coloring regimen to naturally gray hair can be difficult. Here are the tips I use with my clients to make the transition not only smooth but to deliver beautiful results throughout the process. The first step is to discuss the transition with your stylist, of course. Your graying pattern will determine if you are a good candidate for a smooth transition. If you have a lot of gray hair in front, you are a great candidate for transitioning because your light hair will frame your face as it grows out. The quickest way to transition is to move to a shorter hairstyle. This will get rid of much of your color-treated hair in favor of the natural color growing in at the roots. Also, very long gray hair is aging, while a shorter modern cut is youthful. I then like to strategically dye the roots using a lighter color or a balayage technique to soften the line of demarcation. This produces a sun-kissed look. We also use semi-permanent color, which blends into the gray for a blended color. As your hair continues to grow out, we will lighten the color of the roots each time and maybe add some highlights for dimension until you are completely free of hair dye. We also want to choose the right products during this transition with a focus on keeping your hair moisturized. Personalized Skin Treatments Every woman wants to look her best 24/7. Sadly, that is neither practical nor possible. Some are blessed with perfect skin, but most work HARD to achieve just acceptable results. Fortunately, thanks to great advances in techniques and products, there’s a myriad of options. In the face of these options, I believe in educating my patients on what is best for them and their skin type so that they make the informed choice. Below are the three main options for treating common skin issues. PICO Genesis (PG): This laser treatment improves the

appearance of unwanted freckles, sunspots and age spots. PG uses laser light to selectively shatter unwanted pigmentation and remodel the upper layer of the skin to return balance and radiance after a few treatments. After your initial series, further treatments to maintain your results are required. The best part? There is no downtime associated with PG! Laser genesis and micro-needling: Both options work in a similar fashion as they stimulate natural processes such as collagen building to promote healthy-looking skin. You can have

a more youthful appearance by treating conditions such as aging, fine wrinkles, and sun damage. Laser Genesis has little to no downtime and works best for active acne and facial redness. Microneedling has a downtime of about 24 hours and works best for sun damage, scars, enlarged pores, and wrinkles. Many patients begin to see results within the first few days after their initial treatment. Results will continue to improve over the next few months as your skin heals. For more problematic skin, more sessions may be required.

By Patricia Faulstick, Master Esthetician at Alya Salon & Spa

Are Combo Treatments for Me? As aestheticians, it is our job to support our client’s decision with the best possible facial care. Clients will often ask if combining microdermabrasion with other facial treatments is a good idea. The short answer is: Yes! Here are some tried and true combination treatments to achieve the best results:

With microdermabrasion, each treatment removes roughly 30- 60 percent of the stratum corneum, the rough outer layer of the skin. This process stimulates new cell growth, allowing the skin 100 percent product penetration. Another great combo option is an enzyme treatment. Enzymes aid in proteomics, allowing proteins

to dissolve. If we mechanically exfoliate the skin from the outside with microdermabrasion to create cell turnover, followed with an enzyme to dissolve the dead surface skin, and then add a chemical peel, we can give our client the ultimate exfoliation treatment, leaving their skin glowing and refreshed. We can even take this exfoliation facial up a notch by simple adding in LED or even high frequency. LED light therapy converts electrical energy into light energy. Choosing which form of LED will depend on what you are trying to accomplish within your peel facial. Red, amber and infrared lights target healing and anti- aging. They will specifically help build proteins and other growth factors within the skin. These also help reduce inflammation and increase circulation. Blue lights are helpful

in destroying acne bacteria. Highfrequency light has proven to be effective on almost any skin lesion from acne and burns, to waxing procedures and cold sores. Highfrequency facials are a safe, gentle and therapeutic approach to skin rejuvenation, quickly healing and restoring your skin’s health.

Patricia Faulstick is a master esthetician with 7 years of experience in the field. Before entering the world of skin-care, she was in healthcare at Fairfax Hospital for 17 years, working as a medical assistant, then as a surgical tech where she found her passion for skin-care. She is an expert in many treatments, including microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser skin treatments, and facials. She is ready to help you love the skin you’re in!
