The Science of Freezing Away Fat CoolSculpting eliminates stubborn fat safely and effectively, without surgery or downtime. This fat reduction treatment is the only FDA-cleared procedure to use controlled cooling to safely target and eliminate dietand exercise-resistant fat. CoolSculpting results are proven, noticeable, and lasting. Freeze away fat? It comes down to science. Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), and then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you. The CoolSculpting fat freezing procedure is completely non-surgical, so you can typically return to work and normal activities immediately. In the weeks and months following

8

your procedure, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good. Am I a good candidate? The CoolSculpting fat reduction procedure is specifically designed for those who have unwanted fat that resists diet and exercise. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the CoolSculpting procedure is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. It is, however a non-surgical alternative to liposuction that targets fat bulges in certain areas. How long is each session? How many sessions will I need?

M a rc h / A p r i l 2 0 1 7 | SouthernMarylandWoman.com

We will help you create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals. The length of your CoolSculpting session will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. We may schedule additional sessions in order to meet your goals. Where does the fat go? Are the results permanent? Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), your body processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good. What does it feel like? As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold. This soon dissipates. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their treatment. Is the CoolSculpting procedure safe? The CoolSculpting procedure is FDA-cleared for the flank (love handles), abdomen, and thigh. With over one million CoolSculpting treatments performed worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for non-surgical fat reduction. Are there any side effects? During the procedure you may experience deep pulling, tugging, pinching, numbness or discomfort. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and pain. Rare side effects may also occur. The CoolSculpting procedure is not for everyone. You should not have the CoolSculpting procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting procedure is not a treatment for obesity. Can I return to normal activities after my treatment? Yes, you can. The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately.

Often times, patients return to work after their CoolSculpting session is over. When will I see results? You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment.. Why Us? Kelly Sutter and Maureen Mussomele are both Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialists. They have extensive training with CoolSculpting and Skin Wellness MD offers the latest technology in CoolSculpting equipment. The new CoolAdvantage applicator delivers the proprietary CoolSculpting® cooling technology at a lower temperature, reducing treatment time nearly in half, and features an adaptable 3-in-1 configuration and enhanced cup design. CoolFit Advantage™ is ideal for vertical areas of fat such as the inner thigh. CoolCore Advantage™ best matches the contours of the abdomen. CoolCurve+ Advantage™ is the applicator of choice for flanks. CoolMini applicator, which is designed to treat smaller pockets of fat, including the submental, or chin fat area, more commonly referred to as the double chin. You can reshape your body! At Skin Wellness MD (with offices in Lusby and Annapolis), we will develop a customized CoolSculpting treatment plan that addresses your problem areas. Your individualized treatment plan will be tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget. Schedule your complimentary consultation by calling 410-231-2123 to find out if the CoolSculpting fat freezing procedure is right for you. Results and patient experience may vary.

Do I Need a Periodontist? The truth is over 50% of the population above age 35 has some form of periodontal disease. If you have never had a periodontal evaluation or it has been a while since you have seen a dentist, and you are older than 35, you should call a periodontist today for an appointment. It might just save your life! I am not sure I need a periodontist; can’t I just see a general dentist? Regular examinations are very important to keep track of the present status of your mouth and your dental health. Your periodontist will work with you to create a maintenance schedule

depending on what your specific needs are. This will be based on many variable factors such as your overall health and other risk factors such as smoking, genetics, reproductive issues, cancer, lupus, and diabetes. Your periodontist will constantly tailor your care so your mouth stays healthy. He or she may recommend exams every six months for mild gingivitis (redness), or every few months for more advanced dental needs. Other than diagnose and treatment of gum disease, what

else have periodontists been trained to do? Most periodontists spend the majority of their time treating gum disease, but there are a variety of other procedures that they are able to perform. Periodontists place dental implants when natural teeth cannot be saved. They also monitor the implants to make sure that they’re properly doing their job. Periodontists may also correct gum recession and cover up exposed root surfaces, which can be unsightly as well as sensitive to hot and cold. These procedures are often used to lay the foundation for additional cosmetic procedures to help create a beautiful smile. Finally, periodontists can be integral in the comprehensive planning of your oral care, along with your general dentist or other dental professionals. Their goal is for you to KEEP YOUR TEETH FOR A LIFETIME. What if I have missing teeth? Missing teeth will affect the look of your face. Not only will your smile be affected by the gaps from missing teeth, but if you’re missing too many teeth, the skin around your mouth won’t be supported properly and will start to sag, making you appear older than you are. Additionally, missing teeth will make it more difficult to chew your food properly and may even affect the way you speak. If you are currently missing any of your teeth, consider replacing them with dental implants, which can look and feel just like natural teeth. I have big gums and short teeth, so when I smile you can almost only see my gums. Isthere a way to improve my smile? Is there a way to improve my smile? Yes, there may be a way to enhance your smile. It’s a good idea to discuss your options with a periodontist first. He or she can explain the best way to create the smile you want, as well as answer any questions that you may have. For example, one procedure that can remove excess gum tissue is called crown lengthening.

After the excess gum tissue is removed, the gum line is then reshaped in order to create the right proportion between gum tissue and tooth surface. What can I do at home to prevent periodontal disease? The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to take good care of your teeth and gums at home. This includes brushing your teeth after every meal and before bedtime, flossing at least once each day, and seeing your dentist or periodontist for regular exams twice a year. Spending a few minutes a day on preventative measures may save you the time and money of treating periodontal disease.

Dr. Karl Smith has been in dental practice for over thirtyfour years. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1981 and immediately entered General Practice in the US Air Force Dental Corps. He successfully completed three additional years of advanced education in the specialty of Periodontics with additional training in IV Sedation and Dental Implants in 1992, at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio and Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. He won the John Pritchard Prize for outstanding research which included looking for a vaccine against bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Dr. Smith completed a Master of Business Administration degree with a Certificate in Health Services Management while working full time as a Periodontist. In his free time Dr. Smith enjoys traveling nationally and internationally. He is an expert skier and enjoys playing other sports including tennis. Family time with his five children and many grandchildren is also very important to him. Dr. Smith’s team describes him as a dentist with superpowers! They know that when he speaks with his patients, he does so with a great deal of care and concern, and because he has a genuine desire to improve their lives and smiles! Dr. Smith is a member of many dental organizations including the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Periodontology.

Teaching Language Skills at Home When your child is playing with his peers and you notice that he is not able to communicate as well as others, it can be difficult to witness. When your child needs help and you do not know what to do or where to start, it is easy to feel helpless. Watching your child struggle to communicate can leave you feeling alone and overwhelmed. Studies show that children make progress faster when their parents are involved in the therapy process. Empowered parents make a difference. Why do some children talk later? A child’s ability to communicate can be delayed for a myriad of reasons. Some children have diagnoses that put them at risk for delayed speech and language development, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder,

Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Hearing Impairments, Developmental Delays etc. Children can also have standalone speech and language delays meaning, they are typically developing in all other areas (play, thinking, motor and interaction), but are struggling to communicate. The breakdown in communication can be found in the understanding of the language that the child is hearing (receptive language), in the formulation of thoughts and feelings into words (expressive language) or in the formation of sounds to make those words understood by others (articulation). When should I be concerned? Although each child develops at his or her own pace, there are milestones at

Speak Well Solutions, LLC. Speak Well Solutions, LLC. provides quality, client focused speech and language services for pediatrics through mature adults with communication and swallowing disorders. Speech Therapy for Children Speech Disorders including articulation, fluency, and apraxia Delayed Expressive/Receptive Language Skills Autism and other developmental disabilities Speech Therapy for Adults Swallowing disorders, dysphagia, Neurological Communication Disorders & Rehabilitation, Accent reduction, and Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT) for Patient’s with Parkinson’s Disease Please call 301-769-6456 to schedule an appointment. each age that speech-language pathologists look for. If your child is NOT: • Waving, playing interactive games, vocalizing during play, understanding simple commands by 9-12 months. • Imitating words, following simple directions, pointing to objects, pointing to 1-3 body parts, answering simple questions, saying at least 5 words by 12-18 months • Saying at least 50 words, combining 2 words at a time, speaking clearly enough to understand 65% of his words, understanding 300 words by 18-24 months • Saying 200 words, engaging in short conversations, understanding at least 500 words, speaking clearly enough to understand 70% of his words, using 2-4 words at a time, following 2 related commands by 24-30 months. Any child not reaching these milestones should be evaluated by a licensed speech-language pathologist to determine if speech therapy is necessary. The “wait and see” approach can delay necessary intervention that can make an immediate impact in the life of a child and his family. Early intervention is key. How can speech therapy help? With young children, a speech-language pathologist uses age-appropriate activities, including play, to create opportunities for communication and builds the child’s independence as a communicator. The techniques used with each child are different depending on his or her own strengths and struggles. Over time, these activities build new pathways in the brain in order to process and produce communication more efficiently. The most important part of the process is to take the strategies that work with an individual child and share them with the family. How can a speech pathologist train parents? Parents have the most access to their own children, therefore they are the best resource that a speech-language pathologist has to improve a child’s communication skills.

The Hanen Centre, which is a not for profit charity dedicated to early language intervention, trains professionals to empower parents and teaches them how they can improve their own child’s language skills. At Speak Well Solutions, using Hanen Centre techniques and resources, our certified speech-language pathologists are able to: • Teach parents how to use daily routines and activities in home to facilitate language. • Teach parents how to create communication opportunities throughout the day. • Help parents to set goals for themselves and their children each week based on current progress and needs. • Work through specific concerns and communication breakdowns that the child is having in the home, school and daycare. • Suggest appropriate books, toys and materials to promote the specific communication skills being addressed in therapy. • How to have fun and bond with their children while teaching them how to become effective communicators.

Elizabeth Peeler, M.S. CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist with over 10 years of experience working with children with various communication delays and disorders. She has extensive experience treating children through high school with diagnoses including expressive/receptive language disorders, autism, articulation and phonological disorders, AD/HD, learning and intellectual disabilities. After completing her undergraduate work at the State University of New York at Cortland, she moved to Southern Maryland in 2006 to complete her masters at Loyola College. After working in the schools for several years, she joined the Speak Well Solutions team in 2014. She is a member of the Hanen Centre with a certification in “It Takes Two to Talk”, a program designed to empower parents to support their children as communicators. She has a passion for providing family support and giving voices to the littlest residents of Southern Maryland.

Dermal Fillers vs. Botox

In the most simple terms dermal fillers (hyaluronic based– ones like Juvéderm, Juvéderm Voluma and Restylane) add or replace lost volume and plump up the face, lips and lines, which occur with age. Some things we can’t stop, but we can slow them down and make them abracadabra-disappear! Botox on the other hand (along with other neuromodulators, like Xeomin) relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles by decreasing muscle movement. So the question is what injection is right for you? It really comes down to the

particular areas of the face and your desired results. As a physician using these modern tools to enhance cosmetic appearances, I can do a lot but I am not a magician. My clients have to be realistic in terms of what they are asking for and I will not promise results I don’t anticipate to achieve. What injection is right for you? The general rule calls for a filler, like Juvéderm, if you’d like to add volume to the cheek area to correct age-related volume loss, smooth moderate to severe parentheses lines and wrinkles around your nose and mouth

or plump your lips. If you are hoping to improve the look of both crow’s feet lines and frown lines between the eyebrows then you will benefit from Botox. Can you get both? The simple answer is yes. After our consultation which is not only comprised of an assessment but also a review of your expectations and goals I’m able to offer my recommendations and we take it from there. Do Injections hurt? As a child of a French Caribbean mother, she has always told me that “you must suffer to be beautiful”. I’ve hear this phrase since age 3 when getting my hair done, to my wedding day when her and her team of corset-string-pullers were full at work. Unlike my mother, my answer is no, you need not suffer to be beautiful. You do feel the Botox injections but when done accurately they are short and quick. For my real pain sensitive clients I do have a topical anesthetic I can apply. As for the fillers some have lidocaine to help numb the area. We can also use ice or our frozen veggie bags to reduce the discomfort.

How long do the results take to show? Each person’s skin is different and our bodies respond to different products differently. Generally, you can expect compliments from your Botox within day 3-5. As for the fillers you will see the results immediately. What if I don’t like the result? The unfortunate part of Botox is once it’s in, it’s in. The brighter side is that it doesn’t last longer than 3-4 months, which is why I rather go slow and steady and keep a calendar spot for an enhancement. The fillers do have an “antidote” and opportunities to remold prior to the filler setting. If not brought to the attention of your provider in a timely fashion than you will have to wait the full 8-12 months. I stand by my initial motto in the earlier issues. “We all age, why not do it gracefully”. Please call 443-294-2101 or e-mail yourtimemedical@gmail.com to schedule your consultation.

A Growing Team Providing All-Around Care Outstanding health care just keeps getting more accessible in Charles County.

W

ith the addition of University of Maryland Community Medical Group - Primary Care in La Plata, residents have a new, convenient destination for medical care. The practice is led by Lorenzo Childress III, MD, and offers preventative care and checkups, management of chronic health issues, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, and much more.

It starts with health counseling and patient education. It also includes disease prevention and management of ongoing issues, such as heart disease, diabetes, COPD and asthma.

Dr. Childress’ primary care practice works in tandem with UM Charles Regional Urgent Care, led by Ann Egland, MD, to provide skilled and compassionate care for more urgent conditions in downtown La Plata.

Urgent Care for Timely Treatment Seven Days a Week

Primary Care for Immediate and Long-Term Needs Dr. Childress thrives on building lasting relationships with his patients. So while the primary care practice can treat many of the same conditions as nearby UM Charles Regional Urgent Care — cold & flu symptoms, mild fevers, minor injuries, etc. — his team also provides diverse services aimed at keeping you healthy year after year.

14

Dr. Childress stresses the importance of regular checkups to all his patients, knowing that education and preventative care can go a long way toward improving the health of Southern Maryland.

Dr. Egland’s team at UM Charles Regional Urgent Care is an important link in the health care spectrum between primary care and the Emergency Department at UM Charles Regional Medical Center. The Urgent Care Center is open seven days a week, with extended hours and no appointment needed. It’s a valuable resource if you’re unable to see your primary care doctor and your situation doesn’t require a trip to the emergency room. Illnesses like cold, flu, fever, allergic reactions and pink eye are commonly treated there — as are broken bones, sprains and strains, cuts requiring stitches and minor burns.

Familiarity and Flexibility Together, the primary care and urgent care services offer you the best of both worlds. Dr. Childress offers the familiarity that comes from getting to know you as a patient, understanding your medical history and, over time, building a strong relationship to keep you healthy.

Meanwhile, Dr. Egland and the urgent care team offer you top-notch medical care that is flexible to fit your busy schedule. Illness and injuries happen at inconvenient times, including evenings and weekends. It’s comforting to know that you always have a place to turn.

PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN LORENZO CHILDRESS III, MD

A Healthy Start Out of the White Coat Lorenzo Childress III, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine physician who also provides wound care and hyperbaric oxygen treatments at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Center for Wound Healing. As a primary care doctor, Dr. Childress treats a broad range of health conditions and has a special interest in the treatment of diabetes and orthopedic injuries. “I really like helping people with diabetes. It can cause so many health problems, but it’s so treatable,” Dr. Childress says. “You get a chance to make a difference in someone’s life that’s really palpable. Preventing complications is far better for patients than treatment.” For orthopedic injuries, such as sprains, fractures and dislocations, Dr. Childress enjoys the immediacy of the results. “You can watch a person progress quickly.”

Married to a neonatal intensive care nurse, Dr. Childress has two children, a 6-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl, who love to play Connect 4 and Memory with their dad.

AS A CHILD, HE DREAMED OF: Becoming a farmer. I had friends whose fathers were farmers, and we used to visit our family farm in Mississippi. I loved being out with the animals and in the fresh air.

IF HE COULD ADD AN EIGHTH DAY TO THE WEEK: I would take my children fishing and horseback riding more often.

HIS FIRST JOB: After eighth grade, when my school system offered summer jobs, I worked as an assistant janitor. WHEN HE REALIZED HE WANTED TO BE A DOCTOR: I worked in my dad’s office after my sophomore year of high school. He was a primary care physician, and I admired the relationship he had with his patients. FAVORITE PART OF HIS JOB: Talking with my patients and

FAVORITE MOVIE: The Deer Hunter with Christopher Walken and Robert De Niro.

WHAT HE’S PASSIONATE ABOUT: Increasing access to health care in underserved communities, where you find a lot more people suffering from avoidable diseases. BEST HEALTH TIP FOR PATIENTS: Everything in moderation. I can’t blame a person for wanting a slice of pizza or a good hamburger—I enjoy food myself. But with diet, exercise and other lifestyle choices, balance is important. If you learn to control the proportion, you can control the outcome

(You want to keep it)

BUT YOU JUST DON’T HAVE THE SPACE FOR IT...

Climate Controlled Units Drive-Up Units Individual Security Alarms Video Surveillance Access Controlled Entry Boxes & Moving Supplies WWW.TOWERSELFSTORAGE.COM

DON’T WORRY,

STORE IT!

Here are some Quick Tips

1.

You will be surprised as to how easy and convenient self storage really is. Whether it be a space big enough to store a car, a large unit for household furniture, or a small unit that would be perfect for seasonal clothing and small items... it is up to you. TIP: Discuss with the managers the things you are storing. They can help you assess the size you need so you don’t waste money on a unit bigger than you need.

2.

You can rent the space for as long or as short of a time as you need. The contracts tend to run month to month, and you cancel at anytime. TIP: Ask about monthly specials!

3.

Invest in some quality sturdy boxes or clear plastic bins. Try to keep them in similar sizes. It will be easier to stack, and it will save you space. TIP: For clothing, try the wardrobe boxes; all you do is transfer your clothes from the closet and hang them in the box... easy!

Women Need Connection to Heal By Deborah Duley, MSW, LGSW

Do you remember playing Barbie or Polly Pocket, or Matchbox cars with your friends? How much fun you had giggling and making up stories about your figurines ... perhaps you played outside on the swing set at recess, played soccer on Saturdays and maybe you even rode your bike or skateboard around the neighborhood. You always did this with someone by your side and I’m sure even now you can conjure up the memories of who you played with and the stuff you did with your friends. It’s much harder to capture those friendships in adulthood because we are discouraged by not only the busyness of our day-to-day activities but also our fears and worries. Fear that person in your church group won’t like you, fear that you don’t fit in with your Moms Club

friends anymore and even just the worry that you’ll be rejected if you ask your co-worker to coffee. As busy as we are and as “connected” as we seem to be

right now in 2017. Working with women every day has shown us that while we are benefiting from our digital prowess, we are still struggling with loneliness and lacking a tribe. Our clients express that they are struggling with these fears and worries on a daily basis as they try to figure out their place in this life. We are longing for that group of women who get us, who are there for us and with whom we can laugh and sometimes cry. History has shown us that women were always together in our ancient societies: we cooked together, raised our babies together, prayed together, survived together and played together. We celebrated our menstruation cycles, our children’s milestones, our small victories as human beings as we lived side by side in small tightknit communities. Our

stories were interwoven with each others’ stories and we were oftentimes, one in the same. Together we took care of each other emotionally and spiritually, in our friendships and love for one another. We needed each other to survive the harsh times and to face a world that was not necessarily a friendly place to live. These days however, we live and work separately from our communities and our friends, as our world has grown more selfsufficient and independent. We have less opportunities to get together with each other as life interferes. Our modern society has created a world that we can be proud of but one of the drawbacks of our development and progress, is that our human need for connection is not being honored.

Don’t you feel better after you’ve been able to talk through an issue with your friend, mom or your therapist? It’s this biological tendency that helps us manage and reduce stress but we are seeing at our practice that most of us are not utilizing this tool in the most effective manner. This is why at Empowered Connections we believe strongly and passionately that women need connection to heal. We dedicate our sessions, each and every one, to making that warm, strong connection and relationship with our clients as we show you that we can be part of your tribe. That we know what you’ve been through as we have been there too; that we recognize you because YOU are US. This is why our mission is to show women that your story is also OUR story. We see women heal every day: we are

We raise our children alone for the most part as a lot of us are geographically distant from our families; we sometimes find ourselves hiring childcare for our children instead of relying on our friends to help us when we need it. Most of us work away from our homes which adds another layer of complication on an already complicated life as we figure out how to juggle the demands of family, work and home. Finding time to meet the girls for drinks can be so difficult to squeeze in our already packed calendars. We have discovered as we’ve worked with hundreds of women and teen girls throughout the years, that true healing takes place when we feel connected to other women. When we feel heard, understood, affirmed and when we know we can trust the person we are talking to. A landmark study on friendship among women conducted by Laura Klein and Shelley Taylor showed us that while both men and women release

eek Purpose, Live Dreams”, the four words that came to mind when I decided to go into business for myself back in 2009. Through prayer and meditation it became clear and evident to me that whatever I set out to do in the world had to be purposefully aligned with God’s unique and intended purposes for my life. And that as a result of living my life in alignment with the intended purposes, I would live out the desires (The Dreams) of my heart. The desires He promised He would give. Hence the name…“Seek Purpose, Live Dreams!” The intent of this first article, in the series Seeking Purpose, Living Dreams with Shaniqua Cousins, is to first encourage you to Be Bold Enough To Dream big, big dreams for your lives’. For some this may come as an easy task. And for others getting into this space may not be as easy, and it may require one to go back to that childlike place within. Where there are no limitations, boundaries or impossibilities. The second is to provide content that provokes a stirring within that desires to receive more. More of whatever good and precious promises were predestined specifically for you many moons ago. However, it is important to have an understanding that receiving is preceded by believing. What do you believe is possible for your life? What dreams, the series of images manifested by your heart’s desires, are you believing belong to you and only you. While embarking on this journey together, we must hold fast to these images. Keep them near and dear to our hearts with strong faith and unwaivering belief that they will come to pass. Thirdly, know that there is freedom and liberation in dreaming that can never be taken away. We are the owners of our hearts desires. It is only through our own permittance that we allow circumstances, and in some cases other people, to squander those dreams. We are all free to dream, to believe it will come true, and to receive everything intended for us. Finally, I am here with you. I am your fellow dreamer and believer. I am bold enough to dream the incredibly impossible for my life, and

I invite you to do the same. Now I know that for some the idea of being a bold courageous dreamer is venturing into uncharted territory, which can be a terrifying thing. However, and I say this with love, sitting on the sidelines of life as a dream spectator could be even worse. You have everything you need to run a dreamers race. There will be test and trials along with this new found way of life. However, if you want to experience life like never before then begin “today” to Dream! Dream Big, Big Dreams! When we allow ourselves to dream we allow ourselves to live and not just exist. If you would make a commitment right now to your tomorrow, your next week, and even your next year to Be Bold Enough to Dream, then I promise you will experience a new thirst and energy for what once seemed like the impossible. SHIRT - STYLE MAFIA LOCKA TOP FROM SHOPBOP.COM

Stripes I am personally excited about this ‘trend’ because I think this is the most classic trend I have seen (oxymoron??). You will see more than your traditionally preppy retailers like J.Crew or Vineyard Vines master stripes. Bold and bright stripes as well as gorgeous textures (sequins and pleats) can brighten the traditional subdued stripe. Stripes will be done in creative ways to awaken and catch your eye.

Spring is right around the corner and has already arrived in the fashion world. Off the shoulder tops are still making a strong appearance but new trends that will dominate this spring and summer include slouchy but romantic one shoulder tops, a heavy dose of stripes done with a contemporary flair and florals, flowing as lovely as ever. Also look for bra tops, updated oxfords, neon, ruffles and ties/laces.

PASSION PROFILE

is

Allie Simmons is a local educator, community organizer, activist and business owner. As a community organizer and activist, Allie uses the skills and knowledge she has acquired as an educator to facilitate raw and honest conversations on race between different ethnic groups and races of people. In January 2014 Allie started on her quest to begin bridging the gaps between races. She held her first meeting in St. Mary’s County. Her goal: to contribute to community, national healing and reconciliation.

ON LIGHTING YOUR FIRE: Change! Being part of the progressive movement that is taking place in our nation is what fuels my fire! I aspire to be one of the many agents of change in combatting social injustices, such as environmental racism. I get energized by the energy of my fellow country women and men that work tenaciously along with me across our great nation. My passion is that of the legacy of my ancestors in dismantling racism and continuing the reconciliation and healing process of this nation. I was blessed with the tools of knowledge, being culturally competent and the gift of “gab” (chuckling). It is through conversation that change will take place. I am using the simple action of speech to have raw and honest dialogues with people as a promotion tool to deconstruct institutionalized hatred from a beautiful country!

ON STARTING THE CONVERSATION: I founded a group called, The Conversation Starters (TCS), and created a business called The Change Starter, LLC in order to focus on tackling racism by talking about it in a raw and honest fashion. Conversations are held through monthly forums in the southern part of Maryland. Some of the locations that the conversation has been held include: Lexington Park, Waldorf, St. Mary’s City, La Plata and Annapolis. The Conversation Starter’s Facebook page, as well as Allie The Conversation’s page post upcoming events. With word of mouth and social media, forums on having dialogues on race are starting to gain traction in our community. For information on where the next TCS forum will be held email: ttopicofconversation@gmail.com.

ON RESULTS: When I decided to follow my purpose – to dismantle racism – I recognized that because it has been entrenched into the fiber of this nation for 500 years that progress would come in a variety forms. Racism is a ‘peculiar’ institution and its affects will not be easily eradicated. Results with conversations vary, including the number... With every forum, people come to have the conversation. To talk about what ails them, their community, this state and this nation. If one person participates in a forum that is success! The desired result is citizen participation in “getting comfortable

26

M a rc h / A p r i l 2 0 1 7 | SouthernMarylandWoman.com

being uncomfortable” with having the much-needed dialogue on racial tensions and truths.

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF NOW: The conversation has got to be had. As a nation, our time is up! This nation has been allowed for 500 years to live in complacency, denial and indifference concerning race relations. We are a divided nation. That divide has undergone periods of mending; yet, it never truly healed. After the 60s and 70s a false façade of togetherness was believed. Yet, here we are in the 21st century where protests are taking place all over the nation; from the Black Lives Matter Movements in our cities, to the Brown Lives Matter Movement in California and to the prayer Movement by the Indigenous in North Dakota and across the US. Since 2016 protests have increased in frequency and numbers. We are in a time where melanated communities are asking to be heard. We are in a time of urgency. We are in a time where the United States is socially fragile. That fragility has become more intensified now with our change of administration. If we do not become intentional in healing our wounds left by the legacy of slavery – our

nation will split apart. United we will stand, divided...? We will fall. I love my nation – falling cannot and should not be an option for us as US citizens. Especially when all it would take is conversations...

ON WHAT’S NEXT: Dismantling racism one conversation at a time on a consistent basis is my focus. The next step for me is the expansion of the conversation. To start having discussions outside of the Southern Maryland region and start traveling, not just throughout Maryland, but also, outside of our state. Hosting conversations in small business venues, corporations and the civil servant field will also start taking place. Like those that came before me, I will work towards reconciliation between the races in our nation for the rest of my life. The future of this nation depends on it.

In each issue SMW recognizes a woman doing exceptional work in the southern Maryland community, a leader who is paving the way to changing our attitudes and inspiring confidence in the future. To nominate a champion to be featured in an upcoming issue e-mail: oda@southernmarylandwoman.com

Add Contrast to Your Kitchen Design Whether you’re building a house and designing a brand new kitchen or remodeling an outdated one, there are all sorts of creative ways to maximize the space and blend different types of styles together. From the ceilings, to the cabinets, to the backsplash, you can use a contrast of colors and textures to personalize the heart of the home. Cabinets. There are three main ways to add contrast to your cabinets. While having the wall cabinets match the base cabinets has always been the traditional way of designing

kitchens, recently there have been more people looking for lighter colored cabinets and darker colored base cabinets. Typically, the darker cabinets ground the space and the lighter

wall cabinets lighten the room up making the space feel larger. Using dark flooring with light cabinets is another way to add dimension. And since people usually spend more of their time around the stove in their kitchen, using different colored cabinets around that area gives the space more of a traditional feel. Backsplashes. amount of tile options for you which can certainly feel overwhelming at first. An easy way to choose a backsplash is planning on the style of cabinet you want first. If you want to go with a more modern and sleek cabinet, then look for tile that looks tumbled or roughed up. The end look will have a beautiful contrast of texture and color. The finish on the cabinet you go with could help decide, too. If a matte finish is more of your style instead of a satin finish, then a glossy backsplash will help add awesome contrast as well. Islands. Mixing the material of countertops on the cabinets and the island is also a great way to add contrast in the kitchen. Along with having the option to mix granite and marble, you could always mix granite and butcher-block for the island. Also, choosing a pretty color for the island cabinets especially if it houses the stove top is a beautiful looking option as well. Ceilings. Adding wood beams to the ceilings can add super contrast to any contemporary kitchen. The rustic feel of the wood with the elegant modern looking cabinets and stainless steel appliances create the perfect blend of a traditional and chic look. Shauna Simpson (pictured far left) and Andrea “Annie” Brady’s kinship is one like many sisters – they’ve shared more than just family-ties, but life experiences. In their case, they’ve even shared a wedding venue. “My younger sister had her reception at the Hall at Huntingtown first,” said Shauna. “[It] was beautiful. When it came time for my wedding, we thought that hall would be perfect for us and we knew we would be in good hands.”

HUNTINGTOWN Making Dream Weddings Affordable For Every Bride and Groom by Rachel Lytle

T

he Hall at Huntingtown is a local wedding venue and arguably Calvert County’s best kept secret. Attached to the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad building, the venue boasts a beautiful and spacious banquet hall draped with a sparkling crystal grand chandelier, sizeable windows, cathedral ceilings, and a neutral color pallet and decor to make any theme come to life comfortably. The main ballroom holds up to 275 guests, with a separate ceremony room available within the hall for up to 150 people. Many clients will utilize both rooms as a way to save money and avoid the need to travel between the ceremony and reception. While the entrance to the hall is located at the finish of a large staircase, the venue is handicapaccessible with an elevator available to take guests to the second floor. Rental of the ballroom includes tables, banquet chairs and of course, a movable dance floor. New in 2017 are optional upgraded chairs, including a white wedding folding chair and silver chiavari chair. Personalized professional wedding day coordination is also offered to

help with decorations, bar staffing and coordinating vendors. The ballroom holds many different types of events throughout the year, from Wednesday bingo to anniversary parties, receptions, company holiday celebrations, as well as weddings and renewal of vows ceremonies. Most notably, however, is their annual Calvert Bridal Expo, held this year on March 5. The Bridal Expo is one of the biggest events for the hall, and in turn supports the wedding business at the venue. Banquet Facilities Manager Carole Fonfara has worked at the hall for nearly ten years and knows first hand just how busy their schedule can get. “We host about 30 weddings a year, sometimes three in one weekend.” All weddings take place Friday through Sunday, with only one event scheduled per day. For back to back events, Carole says the clients will bring decor a week prior for a mock set-up. The team at the hall then sets up the decorations complimentary on the day of the wedding. In fact, they also help tear down at the end of the night. “All the client needs to do is bring in their personal decor,” (continued next page) says Carole,

who acts at the day-of coordinator and wedding planner for all events. Annie said she fell in love with the venue after attending a friend’s wedding. “When we started planning our wedding we went to see the hall as one of our options. Justin loved the location as much as I did and we both absolutely loved Carole so we booked the hall immediately.” Carole said interested clients can book their date as soon or as far out as they want, as long as the day is available. “We once had a lady who had to move her wedding up very quickly due to circumstance and we put her wedding together in three weeks. If we have the date available, we can do it, but if you’re looking for a specific date, don’t wait.” Rental fees are based on a four-hour reception; though additional time is available upon request. All bar service is done through the hall, as opposed to the caterer, with tons of different options and customizable packages sure to make any party a good time. Outside of the hall there is plenty of parking and a large garden for photos. In addition, lodging is located nearby in Prince Frederick, about seven miles down the road. Carole says one of the things that makes the hall unique is they truly care about the bride and groom and making their vision of their wedding come to life. “We want to make sure that every event is as good as it can be, and we have excellent caterers to choose from. It’s a gorgeous room and can make anybody look back and say I had a beautiful wedding.”

Annie and Justin both worked at the mall when they were younger and met one day at Cinnabon. Eventually Justin asked for her number, and that night they talked for hours, having their first date the very next day. “We have now been together going on 15 years,” she said. The couple had a Halloween-themed wedding, with the colors of purple, black, green and orange filling the hall. “We had fall leaves, hay bales, Jack-O’-Lanterns,” said Annie. “There was a fog machine for our entrance. And my mom made us a Halloween themed wedding cake. We also had a candy bar with little trick or treat bags as guest favors.” Between Annie’s mother and the help of Carole, the couple said their experience was ‘stress free.’ “Carole is truly amazing at her job. She is so organized, professional and truly a wonderful person. She puts your mind at ease during the planning process and she makes your wedding reception go beautifully without one issue,” Annie said. They also praised the vendors, from the caterer down to the linens. “The tablecloths and napkins through Top Hat Rentals were gorgeous and Dream Weavers Events and Catering was delicious!” she said. “We had zero complaints during the planning process or on the day of. We have people who still talk about our wedding to this day!”

Shauna Tommy

SiMpSon

of Waldorf, MD, married at the Hall at Huntingtown on June 20, 2015

Tommy and Shauna started out as friends until sparks flew one night on her birthday. “It was my birthday and I really wanted a blue glow necklace. Tommy did everything possible to get me one. We talked on the way home and laughed a lot, too.” When Shauna arrived home she texted Tommy, ‘You know what I want for my birthday? You as my boyfriend.’ From that day on they were a couple, and four years later – on her birthday – he asked her to marry him. For the wedding, Shauna and Tommy combined a rustic theme with a splash of color. “Outside of the hall we had wooden crates with our initials and flowers. The stairs were wrapped with Dogwood flowers. There

was a memory tree of our family members who had passed away and could not be there to celebrate with us,” she said. The couple had brightly colored flowers as center pieces and blue and white accent colors throughout the venue. “Individual bags of Fisher’s popcorn were tagged to show where guests were seated, and we had a dessert table with the groom’s cake, cupcakes, Oreos, and lollipops on it.” Overall, Shauna was very pleased with all of the vendors on her wedding day. “Working with Dream Weaver Events and Catering was wonderful. DJ Dave was a great choice for music. Paul Kwak Productions was my videographer; Paul and his wife did an amazing job. Birds of a Feather Photography were my photographers

and their photos were breathtaking. Bow-tie Booths was able to set up on the upper landing, it was the perfect space.” Shauna says Carole took the stress out of dealing with vendors and setting up the hall and helping to make key decisions. “The great thing is that Carole was in contact with all of the vendors and on the day of the wedding, she handled everything. Carole is the biggest benefit of the hall. She works extremely hard to make sure your day is perfect and stress free. You can call her with any questions. She gets just as excited about your wedding day as you are,” she said. “I’ve also never heard of a venue where you could drop off your decorations the night before and they would set them up for you and then take them down and pack them up. Carole will feel more like a family member by the time your wedding day is over. She is warm, witty and smart. Carole can really help make your dreams a reality.”

John Wayne and Patricia met when they were teens and never made attempts to date because the timing was just not right. The couple reignited old sparks several years later and found themselves falling in love. They have a beautiful daughter together, which made their love for each other flourish. The couple chose a fall-themed wedding with leaves, pumpkins, corn kernels and all things that feel like fall. “Color-wise we used brown, champagne, ivory and orange splashes,” Patricia said. “The hall had everything! Where else can you start your own parade, get married on a riverboat or say, “I do” in an exquisite courtyard? You’d be hard pressed to find a more enchanting spot for a wedding anywhere in the world. KELLY SCHINDLER, HOLLYWOOD, MD

DANIEL HOWARD, SAN DIEGO, CA

Kelly and Daniel tied the knot on September 30, 2016 with a ceremony and reception at the New Orleans Board of Trade

WHY NEW ORLEANS: New Orleans is such a great city with an amazing vibe. There are so many things to see and do there that I felt like each of our wedding guests could find something they were into…museums, ghost walks, cemetery tours, music and so much more. Also, our families are pretty spread out so I didn’t feel like having the celebration in my hometown was necessary and thought New Orleans was a good meeting point. We had guests from Louisiana, California, Florida, Maryland, Washington, DC and Italy.

SPECIAL MEMORIES IN NEW ORLEANS BEFORE THE BIG DAY: We took a trip to New Orleans together not long after we started dating. It was a very fun trip for both of us. I knew during that trip that he was the man I wanted to marry and that I wanted to marry him in New Orleans.

THE DECIDING FACTOR: Washington, DC, was the only other location we considered, but because it was a late September wedding we really thought the weather would be better and that it was just more like our personalities to have it in New Orleans. And boy

36

M a rc h / A p r i l 2 0 1 7 | SouthernMarylandWoman.com

were we right! That weekend was amazing 70 degree weather in NOLA rainy weather in Washington, DC.

FAVORITE PART OF YOUR NEW ORLEANS WEDDING: Besides the actual ceremony itself, the second line was my absolute favorite part of our wedding! For those that don’t know, a second line leads the bridal party along with all their guests on a parade route, sometimes to get people from one venue to another and sometimes just around the city on a short strut around town. The second line is made up of two parts: the first line, which is the brass band and the bride and groom who usually have a uniquely decorated parasol. And the second line, which is all of the wedding guests who usually have a wedding keepsake handkerchief to wave as they dance along to the lively music and wish well to the newly married couple.

YOUR GUESTS RAVED ABOUT: Our guests loved the location, a few had never visited New Orleans before, the food, and they are still talking

about the second line!

ADVICE FOR COUPLES CONSIDERING NEW ORLEANS FOR THEIR WEDDING: There are many different areas of the city that give the wedding and its guests different experiences and moods. If you are into music there are a ton of venues in the French Quarter that are a full on New Orleans experience. If you want something a little more traditional but still close to all the French Quarter action the CBD (Central Business District) has some really great venues. If you want something with a little more southern charm Uptown has some very beautiful plantation style homes filled with character. There is literally a venue for every type of wedding all located in very close proximity.

Karrie and Adam were married on November 26 2016 with a sunset ceremony and reception at Il Mercato in the Lower Garden District.

WHY NEW ORLEANS: We love to travel, and so do many of our friends and family, so a destination wedding was a no brainer for us. New Orleans has always been one of my favorite cities since I first traveled there at 18. Also, my maternal grandparents met in New Orleans, so my family has ties there. I always knew that New Orleans would be the perfect place for a wedding, you can’t beat the food, the music or the beautiful architecture as a backdrop.

SPECIAL MEMORIES IN NEW ORLEANS BEFORE THE BIG DAY: While I had been many times, Adam had never been to New Orleans before we got engaged. He trusted me with selecting a venue in New Orleans which we booked sight unseen. Soon after, we took a trip there for my birthday weekend to do some wedding planning and we had a lot of fun exploring around town. We even found a band for our cocktail hour just by seeing them busk on Royal Street.

THE DECIDING FACTOR: There is a great quote by Bob Dylan that sums it up “There are many places I like, but I like New Orleans better.”

FAVORITE PART OF YOUR NEW ORLEANS WEDDING: We absolutely loved our wedding venue in the Lower Garden District, Il Mercato, it had an outdoor courtyard with a fireplace that was so romantic and perfect for a sunset ceremony.

YOUR GUESTS RAVED ABOUT: We hired a live event painter to paint the reception as it was happening and our guests were impressed by how talented she was. Also, we ended our reception with a second line parade led by the Kinfolk Brass Band. Not everyone had been to New Orleans before, so some guests were completely surprised by it. Our parade went through a few blocks that surrounded our venue and people were coming outside of their houses to watch us and some even joined in. It was an awesome experience!

ADVICE FOR COUPLES CONSIDERING NEW ORLEANS FOR THEIR WEDDING: Do it! But try to avoid the summer months when it is too hot and humid and early fall when there is still a threat of hurricanes.

Destination Wedding Planning 101 Destination weddings have become extremely popular in recent years, current surveys find that nearly 1/4 of all engaged couples choose to travel to a destination outside of their home area to get married. Almost 1/3 of destination wedding couples head to the Caribbean or Mexico to tie the knot, wanting a beautiful tropical backdrop as their location of choice. While a destination wedding sounds intriguing, exactly how do you go about planning one? We’ve talked to local destination wedding expert Tracy Dennis, owner of Four Seasons Travel LLC in Mechanicsville, to get the “inside scoop” on how to start planning your big day. Why do couples choose a destination wedding? Couples choose to do a destination wedding for often very different reasons, but the

if not higher (not including the honeymoon). A destination wedding is often just a fraction of that cost. Most resorts have a number of complete packages which include virtually everything you need to celebrate your big day. You also have the ability to customize most packages if you so desire, it can be as simple or elaborate as you wish. And my favorite “benefit” of destination weddings.....your honeymoon starts the moment you say “I Do!” That’s really easy, work with a destination wedding specialist from the beginning. Choose one who has a great track record of not only working with large groups (I’ve had weddings that were just the bride and groom, all the way up to a group of 200, and

most common one is to save money. It also gives couples an opportunity to spend more than just a few hours celebrating with family and friends. What are the most popular places that couples are choosing to be married? Definitely for us, the most popular destinations are Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas and Mexico. A big reason for that is the ease of getting to those destinations combined with the wide range of resort options for couples to choose from. What are the benefits? When totaling the costs of a traditional wedding, you’re often well into the $20,000 range

What are the “legalities” of getting married in Mexico or the Caribbean? Each destination has their own specific requirements to be legally married in that country, such as the “residency requirement”. Most will require couples to “reside” (basically, be on the ground) in that country for a certain number of hours/days prior to the ceremony. There’s also paperwork that needs to be submitted and processed in advance, and something we help our couples take care of. How do couples navigate through all the choices of resorts and destinations, as well as the legalities involved?

everything in between!) but one who also travels regularly to the destinations you’re considering. They’ll help you narrow down the best location and resort for your event, as well as keep everyone on track during the planning process. I handle not only the couple’s travel arrangements, but those of all their guests as well which makes the entire planning process go smoothly and ensures all rooms are part of the wedding group. I charge absolutely no additional fee for my services. If you’re thinking about a

Talcum Powder Linked to Increased Cancer Risk About a year ago, I found myself in a mad dash at every convenience store I could find trying to find baby powder. Not just any baby powder - organic or talc-free baby powder. For as long as I can remember, I’ve used baby powder in my everyday routine. Mom used it on me as a child. As I got older, I used it to keep cool on summer days. Imagine my surprise when I learned a product which was part of my daily life, baby powder, was exposing me to a life threatening disease. About Talcum Powder Talcum powder is made primarily from talc, a mineral containing magnesium, silicon and oxygen. Used in baby and facial powders, cosmetics and other consumer products like condoms, diaphragms, sanitary napkins,

tampons and vaginal deodorants, talc absorbs moisture and can be used to reduce chafing. Despite its wide use for decades, the International Agency for Research on Cancer currently classifies the genital use of talcbased body powder as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” In addition, a recent study published by the Cancer Prevention Research journal, states the use of talcum powder-based products on a woman’s genitals increases the risk of developing ovarian cancer in a woman’s lifetime. Talcum Powder & Ovarian Cancer The particles which make up talcum powder are extremely fine. Talc does not break down in the body, and when directly applied to a woman’s genital area on a habitual basis, the particles may travel into the vagina, through the fallopian tubes and settle in

the ovaries. The ovaries may then become hindered by the presence of talcum powder particles, resulting in an irritation which allows cancer cells to form, grow and spread. Ovarian cancer is one of the most deadly forms of cancer. This is largely due to the fact that symptoms are often vague

and diagnosis is missed until the cancer has progressed to an advanced stage and/or spread into other areas of the body such as the abdomen and pelvic region. Symptoms may include bloating, abdominal pain, changes in bladder and bowel movements and overall fatigue. Ovarian cancer may take several opinions before being correctly diagnosed. An estimated 20,000 women are diagnosed each year with ovarian cancer, and more than 14,000 die. The disease strikes about one in 70 women, though studies show women who use talc-containing products on their genitals have a one in 50 chance of developing the disease. Experts state at least 45,000 women have died as a result of ovarian cancer that could be attributed to talcum powder use on the genitals, and an estimated 1,500 women will die within the next year as a result of its use. Verdicts & Recall Information It has been argued that Johnson & Johnson knew of the cancer risks associated with its talc products, but failed to warn consumers. During 2016, three different juries held Johnson & Johnson liable for the injuries its baby powder and Shower to Shower product caused women. Juries

awarded $72 million, $55 million and $70 million to the women and/or families of those injured by talc usage. It’s important to note no recall was issued for Johnson & Johnson’s products containing talc. Instead, J&J will likely be forced to add stronger warnings for women, allowing them to make a decision for themselves about whether the benefits justify the risk. Join The Fight! Let your voice be heard. Sign the petition to ask Johnson & Johnson to release their internal documents revealing the link between talcum powder and cancer. Hundreds have signed, but we need thousands – tens of thousands – of signatures to get the industry’s attention. So, take a brief moment and do something that can change lives forever. Please sign and share the petition with your friends and colleagues, and say to J&J, #TellTheTalcTruth! If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, please feel free to call me for additional information.

NETWORKING MUST-HAVES!

By Megan Vereb

Spring Into Action! The cold weather is behind us (hopefully!) and spring excitement is in the air. Use this time to assess your networking situation and focus on building new business relationships. Are you an involved member of the community and local business network? Now is the time to do some research about networking opportunities in your local area.

Whether it’s the chamber of commerce or a local businessnetworking group, get involved! You may be surprised to learn how much these organizations have to offer. These groups not only provide business-tobusiness interaction, but you can learn a great deal of business insight through presentations, seminars, and by hosting a networking event.

SEEKING MARKETING OR EVENT HELP? MV Marketing & Events, LLC brings you the experience and expertise of top-level marketing and events in the country’s largest cities, infused with a homegrown approach and affection for the local community.

Hosting networking events is a great way to get other local businesses and community members to come out to your place of business and interact with your products or services. Whether it is for morning coffee, lunch, or happy hour after work, face-to-face interaction builds strong relationships. Don’t have a business storefront? No need to worry, you can still get involved by sponsoring an already planned event. Bring food and drinks for everyone or participate in a fun giveaway where the prize is linked to your business. P.S. This is a great way to collect everyone’s business card! Remember local businesses love to support other local businesses, so spring into action and start filling up your calendar today. You never know how one connection could open you up to a world of new business!

Marketing Materials – Never leave home without your business cards and a strong handshake! You may even want to go the extra mile and create custom post-cards or brochures to hand out with additional information on your business. Elevator Pitch – Make sure to have a few go-to sentences to describe your business, for when you first meet a new contact and they inquire about your line of work. Spruce Up Your Website - Make sure your website is up to date because the first thing most people do after they meet you and take your business card, is look you up online! Come on, you do it too! Enjoy Yourself – Lastly, relax and enjoy yourself. Be confident in yourself and your business, and remember everyone at these networking events is looking to make new connections!
