Give your ‘grey matter’ a work out!

Jungle City

Clonakilty was an official Jungle City in 2012 and over 20 jungle animals are still to be found all over the town. Some, like the elephants and crocodiles, are easier to spot but the fun is discovering an exotic bird in a tree or an unusual tiger while you go about your daily shopping or walk around the town. Look out for Jungle City maps in outlets around town.

If you fancy a very different experience then check out Escape Clonakilty, a new, fun and very challenging live exit game. You and your team must find clues, solve logic puzzles, break the codes and find the key to your freedom. Using your powers of observation and problem solving you’ll have to work together to escape. With two rooms in operation they can accommodate teams of up to 12. You’ll be locked up in a mysterious room and given exactly 60 minutes to get out. Visit www.escape-clonakilty.com for more details.

Park Cinema

Catch one of the latest Box Office releases at the Park Cinema. A great way to spend some time on a blustery and rainy afternoon. See The Southern Star for cinema listings.

Farmer’s Market

Visit the Farmer’s Market in Recorder’s Alley each Friday to get the best of produce ranging from meat, vegetables and bread to art, coffee and home baking.

Lios-na-gCon Ring Fort

Lios-na-gCon is the only Ring fort (Fairy Fort) in Ireland to be reconstructed on its original site. It includes a central hut, several outhouses, animal pens and an underground souterrain which shows the tunnels which were used for food storage and defence. The restoration project was organised by the Clonakilty Macra na Feirme and is a credit to the heritage of the area. www.liosnagcon.com

A little piece of food heaven

Clonakilty (and the wider West Cork area) is renowned for an attitude towards food based on quality, taste, sustainability and local ingredients from local producers. Scally’s SuperValu is a great example of this ethos in action. A food lovers heaven, you’ll find an amazing range of cheeses, meats, fish, salads, breads and pastries, savouries, sweet stuff, pre-prepared dishes and much more sourced from just around the corner and from further afield. If you’re planning a meal at home, a dinner party or a picnic this summer, you’ll be spoilt for choice! See www.www.supervaluclon.ie

TIMOLEAGUE

Timoleague is a picturesque village, situated on the Kinsale to Clonakilty coast road (the R600). Perched on the edge of a long sea inlet, this friendly tourist village is dominated by the ruins of a 13th century abbey. The abbey was founded by the Franciscan order in 1240 A.D., on the site of a 6th century monastic settlement founded by Saint Molaga. The name Timoleague comes from the Irish for House of Molaga (Tigh Molaga).

Timoleague Abbey

Visit the magnificent remains of a Franciscan Friary which was built in 1240 AD. Friars lived in the Abbey until 1629. The Friary was burnt by Cromwellian Soldiers in 1642. All the stained glass has been destroyed but the magnificent stonework architecture can still be admired.

Birdwatching at Timoleague Estuary

The mudflats of the Timoleague Estuary are a haven for birds such as cormorants, great northern divers, guillemots, oystercatchers, herons, common terns and gulls. Note: If birdwatching is your thing, then you should also visit the estuary at Rosscarbery (see pages 8 and 9). For info on birdwatching tours, see www.shearwaterwildlifetours.com

Kilbrittain Whale

Visit the real skeleton of one of nature’s giants - the fin whale. In 2009, this whale beached itself in Burren and despite many efforts to save it, it died. Its bones have now been cleaned and are on display in the picturesque village of Kilbrittain and are very educational to visit.

Kilbrittain Castle and woodland walk

There is a lovely woodland walk which starts at the Village Park and takes in the beautiful view of the Kilbrittain Castle. The woods are deciduous and there is a lovely waterfall near the entrance.

We’ll let you into a secret ... a West Cork Secret!

Located near Kilbrittain, West Cork Secret is a fantastic, unique experience to visit, explore and have some fun. Choose from an assault course, water slide, forest run, nature trail, orienteering and lots more activities and games designed to get you a little out of breath and probably quite wet and/or muddy. There’s also a cafe for food and drinks once your exertions are over. Great for kids and adults alike. www.westcorksecret.ie

The Seven Heads Peninsula

Driving the Seven Heads is a most scenic journey. It is a deeply indented and rugged coastline that stretches from Timoleague through Courtmacsherry, around Dunworley Bay and on to Ballinglanna. Dunworley Beach – Beachcomb for Treasure

After a storm, you may be lucky enough to find one of the coveted blue beads which sometimes get washed up from the depths. The treacherous rocks around the bay caused a few shipwrecks in the past and the beads are thought to come from either the Rover, an Algerian Pirate Ship which sank in 1631 or from the Amity, an African slave ship which sank in 1700 and which was carrying timber, glass and elephant tusks when it went down.

Mimicking the successful bike schemes in Dublin and Cork, this local version has 60 bikes available in 11 locations throughout the town, and in nearby villages. The red-white-and-green bikes, sponsored by local firm Clóna Dairies, can be picked up and dropped off at various ‘docks’. As well as throughout Clonakilty, there will be docks at Inchydoney, Courtmacsherry, Rosscarbery and Dunmore. The bikes are equipped with carrier baskets, gears and lights, and are available through a yearly membership, at €20 for locals, or €10 for tourists and visitors. Users can avail of a special high-viz jacket, helmet and information booklet detailing cycle routes in the locality. Ask your local hotel or see www.clonbike.com

Galley Head Lighthouse – why not stay in a keeper’s house for a weekend?

Galley Head Lighthouse gives superb views over St. Georges Channel. The Lighthouse was built in 1875 and it was from here that the keepers would have witnessed the tragic loss of the Lusitania in 1915. It is also claimed that Ray Bradbury based his story ‘The Fog Horn’ on a reported sighting of a giant sea serpent off Galley Head in the 1800s. For an authentic experience, why not hire a keeper’s cottage for the weekend. See www.irishlandmark.com/property/galley-head-lightkeepers-house or www.greatlighthouses.com

Visit an old time Threshing festival

Old time threshing days and vintage fairs can be found throughout West Cork across the summer months. They celebrate the historic traditions of rural Ireland and rural life at harvest time. You’ll find old tractors and machinery, often beautifully maintained and restored are on show as well as other attractions for the family and kids. See Southern Star newspaper for details.

6)

See a ‘Road Bowling’ match

Road bowling is played mostly in Armagh and County Cork, particularly West Cork in which competitors attempt to take the fewest throws to propel a metal ball along a predetermined course of country roads. Big crowds of spectators often line the roads to watch, bet on the outcome and proffer advice to their favoured competitor in the course of a match or “score”. To find out whether a match is planned nearby ask locally or visit www.southernstar.ie/sport.

49

Get your togs on and go for a swim

If you fancy a swim but you’re not sure about the West Cork water temperatures, then there are other options! The swimming pool at The Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery is open to the public or why not check out the leisure club at The Quality Hotel in Clonakilty, which is complete with pool, gym and more. There’s also the public swimming pool over the road in Dunmanway.

And finally...

50

Take a drive, marvel at our scenery

Our final suggestion is to simply jump in your car on a nice sunny day and enjoy the views, especially if you take the coastal roads wherever possible. Here’s a suggested route: Clonakilty, Courtmasherry, Timoleague back to Clonakilty, Inchydoney, Dunmore, Ardfield, Rathbarry, Castlefreke, Owenahincha, Rosscarbery and then back to Clon via the N71 for a nice cup of tea!

While away a rainy day... Take a Choo Choo tour! Don’t let the weather stop you seeing the sights of Clonakilty. Take a tour in Choo Choo – the town’s very own road train. During your tour you’ll soon understand why Clonakilty has been designated a West Cork Heritage Town. The architecture is quintessential Irish, from delightful traditional hand-painted shop fronts, to an old Presbyterian church that is now home to the local post office and the Town Council offices and Library which are housed in a converted Corn Mill. Choo Choo makes its way along narrow streets and lanes that open into elegant squares with the river flowing through. Pass along by the brewery buildings and mills that mark the town’s trading heritage and soak up the wonderful coastal scenery along the way. Go to www.modelvillage.ie for more info.

Morning coffee or leisurely lunch Enjoy some tasty homemade treats and freshly brewed Fairtrade coffee in one of the many coffee shops or restaurants around town. Interestingly, Clonakilty was designated a Fairtrade town in 2003 – the first of its kind in Ireland – and in 2012 it was named ‘Ireland’s Best Fairtrade Town’. You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to cafés, pubs, restaurants and hotels that all offer superb food and service.

Visit a museum

Clonakilty is rich in heritage and history and boasts a number of museums and places of interest including the Clonakilty Museum, the Michael Collins Visitor Centre and the new Michael Collins museum in Emmet Square. There’s also the fantastic Model Railway Village (if the weather’s not too bad!) which is a favourite with adults and children alike.

Shopping Browse Clonakilty’s wide variety of shops, craft outlets and art galleries, all of which offer great value and choice if you want to pick up those all-important souvenirs or gifts. If you’d like something truly unique to mark your stay in Clon, there is a fantastic array of West Cork-made products to choose from.

Charles Fort is open all year to visitors and is one of the best surviving examples of a 17th Century star-shaped fort. Much of its original 1678 construction remains. The fort was actively used by the military until 1922. It is also a popular civil weddings venue now, too.

The keeper’s kitchen and bedroom at the signal station at the end of the walk has been preserved as it was, as a tribute to the lifestyle of the men of the Irish Lights. There are many fascinating displays to be seen, both here at the signal station and back at the interactive visitor centre at the start.
