Kinsale can certainly be described as one of the jewels of West Cork. Situated at the mouth of Bandon River, this historic harbour town on the coast near the Old Head of Kinsale offers visitors the best of everything as a holiday destination. The town is bustling with activity, whether it’s taking in the stunning marina or wandering around the narrow streets with its wide selection of shops, galleries and restaurants. Now that it is the start and finishing point of the Wild Atlantic Way, Kinsale will attract even more visitors who are charmed by the hospitality of the town, which was voted ‘Best Small Tourist Town 2014’ by Failte Ireland. It’s also safe to assume that the title of ‘Gourmet Capital’ of Ireland is richly deserved as Kinsale boasts a wide and varied selection of fine dining restaurants.

Charles Fort
A visit to Kinsale isn’t complete without checking out the stunning Charles Fort, which is one of the best examples of a star-shaped fort in Europe. In places the walls are 6m thick and it has five defensive bastions around its perimeter. Charles Fort remained a British army base until Irish independence in 1921. www.heritageireland.ie

The Giant’s Cottage
Just around the corner from the Regional Museum, in Chairman’s Lane, you will see the little cottage where the Kinsale Giant, Patrick Cotter O’Brien lived. He was born in 1760 and died in 1806 and at 8ft 1 inch, he was the tallest man in the world at the time.
Ghost Walks
An amusing walking tour with a difference. Get all the facts and historical data on one hand and entertainment from the Mad Hatter and wall-vaulting ghosts on the other. Brian O’Neill is in charge of the walks and they depart at 9pm every night (except Saturdays) from the Tap Tavern. 021-4772240

The Courthouse & Regional Museum
A visit to the regional museum, which is situated in the 17th century courthouse originally used during the inquest into the sinking of the Lusitania, is a must. Aside from seeing the Kinsale Giant’s knife, fork and shoes – 15.5 inch whoppers – you can see items such as the unique Kinsale Cloak and sample of Kinsale Lace.

Desmond Castle
Built in 1500 by Maurice Fitzgerald, the 8th Earl of Desmond, the building was originally used as a customs house. From 1641-1791, the castle became a naval prison and was known locally as the French Prison. It also held American prisoners of war during the American War of Independence. During the famine the castle was used as a workhouse and conditions in it were just as severe as when it was a prison. Today, it is the home of the International Wine Museum.
