Skibbereen, often affectionately known as “Skibb” means “little boat harbour” as the River Ilen which runs through the town, flows out to sea at Baltimore. Skibbereen is the ‘hub’ town for this part of West Cork and is an ideal base from which to discover all that the area has to offer. It’s a vibrant, colourful and friendly place where you can sample the very best of West Cork’s artisan food and craft culture, enjoy traditional and modern Irish pubs and avail of a wide range of great shops and services.

Thank you for supporting local businesses.

Lough Hyne

The lake was first discovered by marine biologists in 1886, and is a truly magical place and should be a ‘must-see’ on any visitor’s list. The only inland saltwater lake in Europe is also Ireland’s first Marine Nature Reserve and nestles in a fold of hills, just 5km south west of Skibbereen, off the Baltimore Road. It’s a popular swimming lake, with temperatures slightly above that of the sea.We would highly recommend visiting The Visitor Centre at Skibbereen Heritage Centre before going to Lough Hyne, where an excellent audio-visual documentary is shown on the history, formation and folklore of the lake, plus underwater footage showing some of the plant and animal life to be found. Adults and kids alike will find this fascinating. It’s spectacular setting has seen it feature in a number of films and music videos.

Skibbereen Heritage Centre

– as well as the Lough Hyne exhibition, the Heritage Centre is well worth a visit. Located in the award-winning, beautifully restored old gasworks building, the centre also houses: • The Great Famine Commemoration Exhibition, which commemorates the tragic period in the 1840s that is known in Irish history as The Great Hunger. Skibbereen, along with many areas of the west, was very badly affected, losing up to a third of its population to hunger, disease and emigration. • An archaeology trail of the Skibbereen area • Genealogy services. Available online at www.skibbheritage.com, you will also find fully searchable databases, which include a Graveyard Survey, Loan Fund Records, Tithe Applotment Books, Estate Records and a Townlands Database. • A new Skibbereen Walking Trail app,‘Skibbereen: The Famine Story’, will guide the walker through the sites and stories in Skibbereen using the voices of the era. Oscar-winning actor and local resident Jeremy Irons is just one of those to have lent his vocal talents to the project. This new app can be downloaded to include admission to the Centre.

Fore! Skibbereen & West Carbery Golf Club

The club is located 3km from the town and is an 18 hole, 5,967 yard course set against the backdrop of some stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from all of the back nine holes. The 19th hole is a great place to unwind, too, with a postround drink and snack!

Fishing

There’s a wide variety of locations and all types of fishing in and around Skibbereen and the surrounding district, too many for these pages. Many local harbour villages offer deep sea fishing options, see below for more. For fishing closer to the town, here are three suggestions: Shepperton Lakes – about two miles east of Skibbereen just off the main N71, these lakes hold rainbow and brown trout as well as pike. Permits are available locally (look for the sign on the N71 road) Mackerel fishing – great fun for young and old alike when the tide is in and the fish are around, check out Glandore Pier, Union Hall Pier or Sandy Cove (off the rocks on the road between Castletownshend and Sandy Cove beach – but please take care and be mindful of waves and tide at all times). The River Ilen – is a medium sized spate river about 21 miles (33kms) long and flows through some of the most beautiful scenery in West Cork. A large part of the river is managed by the River Ilen Anglers’ Club based in Skibbereen. The season for salmon and sea trout opens on February 15th and closes on September 30th for salmon, and on October 12th for sea trout. Countryside Sports on Townshend Street will have all the info you need.

On yer bike!

Failte Ireland has Skibbereen listed as one of the ‘top 3 cycle hub towns’ in Ireland. Bike hire and cycle maps are available in the town centre and there are a range of local cycle routes for all skill levels, with many of them off the main roads, and taking in some stunning coastal and countryside scenery.

6

Are you the creative type?

The West Cork Art Centre has this year moved into a brand new building, in the centre of the town. The imposing corten steel structure can be seen from most angles in the town, and the public are welcome to come in and have a look around as there are many public exhibitons on throughout the summer. Why not drop in for a coffee and a treat in Kalbo’s café on the ground floor, with its outdoor courtyard seating?

9

Get out, get moving!

For fans of outdoor challenges,West Cork will give you several opportunities to put your perseverance to the test. The SCAR (Skibbereen Charity Adventure Race), which takes place on Saturday 17th October, is a multi-discipline adventure race in and around the breathtaking beauty and rugged environs of Skibbereen, Castletownshend, Lough Hyne and the wild Atlantic coastline. The Down and Dirty 6k adventure challenge is a fun but mucky trek through the wonderful estate of Liss Ard outside Skibbereen, and takes place on Saturday, November 28th

To market, to market

Skibbereen Farmers’ Market, which is held every Saturday morning in the town centre (Fairfield car park) is a real delight where you can purchase local produce such as fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, herbs, freshly baked breads and pastries, cheeses, honeys and jams as well as a whole range of craft products. There are also fresh coffee stalls, crepe chefs, and seating. On a good summer’s day, it usually attracts a few buskers, too.

The Sky Garden at Liss Ard Country House & Restaurant

has to be seen to be believed – just lie back and watch the clouds drift by! The James Turrell creation can be found within this magical estate of country manors, gardens, walking trails, ponds and lakes. It’s a great place for a walk, and the restaurant serves a great Afternoon Tea. Also open for dinner and Sunday lunch so you can have a delicious meal after a couple of hours exploring! (booking advisable) See www.lissardestate.com for details.

The Skibbereen area was one of the worst affected by the Great Famine of 18451852. The mass graves of between 8,000 and 10,000 famine victims at Abbeystrewry near Skibbereen, are testament to the tragic consequences of the catastrophic failure of the potato crop in the area during the 1840s. Across Ireland (particularly the west of Ireland) it is estimated around 1m people died as a result of the famine and thousands more emigrated. There is a commemorative sculpture at the graveyard, which is a short stroll from the town, on the Schull Road.

Knockomagh Hill

Among the things to do at Lough Hyne, there is a nature trail walk up Knockomagh Hill, which overlooks the lake. This spectacular walk (which will get the heart pumping) takes approximately one hour and offers spectacular views of the coastline of West Cork and the surrounding islands.

Making a splash

Two favourites with locals are Tragumna beach, a blue flag beach and Tralispean (the latter being a tricky one to find so you will need to ask for directions). Both beaches are safe and child friendly with Tragumna having public toilets and a pub nearby and Tralispean a great place to have a picnic. There’s also Lough Hyne which can be a little milder than the open sea. Further afield is Barleycove, which is one of Ireland’s most beautiful beaches with lovely golden sand, a surf school, a hotel, and it’s safe for bathing. To find it, head towards Goleen and then towards Crookhaven, then follow the signs for Barleycove.

Visit the Pirate Exhibition at Dún na Séad castle which was the stronghold of a pirate family for hundreds of years. Baltimore is famous for a raid in 1631 when Barbary pirates from North Africa took most of the villagers and sold them into slavery, but the exhibition reveals how the village had a very different history of piracy prior to that raid. From as early as the 13th century, the local rulers and residents of the castle, the O’Driscolls, engaged in piracy by attacking passing vessels. The castle is open until October from 11am-6pm daily. Don’t miss the town’s annual Pirate Festival, June 20-21.

Baltimore is slightly off the main tourist trail and is located around 13km SW of Skibbereen. A lively coastal village, there’s a range of accommodation including hotels, guesthouses and a hostel, plus a variety of places to eat and drink. A convenience store, church and swimming pool can be found here and across its natural harbour lie Carbery’s Hundred Isles, including the islands of Cape Clear, Sherkin and Heir, which are just a short ferry ride away from Baltimore pier.

Birds of a feather

West Cork has some incredible varieties of native and visiting birds and there is a thriving bird-watching community of enthusiasts in the area. Birdwatch Ireland organises regular walks in the region, and sometimes day trips include picnic days out for all the family. High on the list of favourite locations for ‘twitchers’ are both Sherkin and Cape Clear islands. For details go to www.birdwatchirelandwestcork.ie/

16

Beacon walk

There is a stunning walk which takes you around The Cove at the end of Baltimore village, and up the winding road to The Beacon. Beacons and signal towers were erected all around the Irish coast by the British in the early 19th Century when they feared a European invasion. After the climb up to the Beacon, please be careful as there can be very strong winds. However, the climb is well worthwhile as the views over to Sherkin Island and out to sea are magnificent. It’s a hugely popular spot for photographers and artists.

Watching the world go by (on land and at sea)

Sometimes, on a nice summer’s day, it can be a pleasure just to sit in The Square in Baltimore and do absolutely nothing – except maybe enjoy a drop of the black stuff or a glass of wine, or a nibble, at the outdoor seating area. As you look out, you’ll see yachts sailing in the bay, fishing boats returning, ferries going to and from the islands, children swimming or learning to sail in the harbour and sometimes even seals or dolphins swimming between the piers. If you’re lucky a ‘trad band’ might even strike up as well!

The Wild Atlantic Pool – which is open seven days a week to locals and tourists alike – has been modernised and is a tourist attraction on The Wild Atlantic Way. A new eco-friendly heating system using heat pumps has been installed to keep the water at a comfortable 30 degrees; the gym has been re-styled and refurbished; and new equipment has been provided. Danno O’Mahony

As you enter Ballydehob, you see to your left a spectacular 12-arch stone viaduct which is a relic of the West Carbery tramway and light railway. It was part of a narrow-gauge railway line that ran from Skibbereen to Schull. The line was opened in September 1886, but it never really made a profit and it was finally closed in December 1945. There are now paddle boats available, a well-maintained children’s playground on the shore, and a nice walk over the bridge which is a great location for taking holiday photographs.

BALLYDEHOB, or Béal an Dá Chab, meaning “mouth of the two river fords”, is a coastal village and can be located by following the N71 west from Skibbereen (approx 16km) Here you’ll find an array of places to eat and drink plus some interesting shops. There are stunning views of the islands of Roaring Water Bay on the drive to Ballydehob.

is probably the village’s most famous son and was a wrestler who famously won the NWA World title in Boston on 30 June 1935.With an incredible physique and huge strength Danno was known as the ‘Irish Whip’ in celebration of his famous throwing technique (one of the village’s many pubs still bears that name.) He died in a tragic road accident in 1950. Be sure to visit the bronze statue erected in Danno’s honour in 2000 in the centre of the village.

SCHULL (pronounced Skull) is a good-sized village located approximately 7km west of Ballydehob. The village is situated in the shadow of nearby Mount Gabriel (407m) and is a lively place particularly in the summer months as holidaymakers and visiting yachting crews arrive. With a wide range of places to stay, eat and drink it also has a sheltered harbour, a good range of shops and two churches.

Gurtnagrough Folk Museum

is without doubt one of Ballydehob’s best kept secrets! A private collection built up over many years by Leita and Tommy Camier, it’s an absolute treasure trove of antiquities reflecting local history and beyond – don’t miss it! It’s open between 11am – 6pm (Monday to Saturday), 2pm – 6pm (Sunday). Telephone 028 37274 in advance, and there’s a small admission charge.

23

Take a step back in time at Levis’ pub

As a rule we haven’t singled out individual pubs or bars in this guide, but we really felt we had to break the rule in the case of Levis’. The Levis sisters ran this 150-year-old bar and grocery store for as long as anyone can remember. Both have now sadly passed away, but the pub is now run by their grand-nephew Joe O’Leary, formerly of Cork band Fred, who has quickly turned it into a mecca for local musicians and lovers of all types of music. Sing songs are a regular occurrence in this little piece of nostalgic heaven.

25

26

Hike up Mount Gabriel

At 407m, this is the highest summit in the area. The top of the hill is used by the Irish Aviation Authority to house their transatlantic radar equipment, hence the two iconic ‘spheres’ on show. The views from the top are spectacular looking out over Roaring Water Bay, the Beara peninsula and even towards south Kerry. On a clear day, you can also see the Fastnet Lighthouse. And if the feet need a rest, there is also a public road to the summit that you can drive up.

24

Calves Week

If you’re a sailing enthusiast or just a keen observer, then you’ll love the buzz of Calves Week. From its inception in 1884, Schull regatta was held in the middle of August, the big attraction being the fierce rivalry and epic battles between the local fleet of fishing yawls and the visitors from Baltimore, Sherkin, Cape Clear and Crookhaven. Today the competitors treat each other with a little more respect, but the rivalry is still as fierce (Aug 4th to 7th).

27

See the rest of the universe from Schull!

The Planetarium, part of Schull Community College, is the only planetarium in the Republic of Ireland and provides a unique educational resource. On the planetarium’s 8m dome, the Carl Zeiss single sphere sky projector shows an accurate representation of the night sky from anywhere in the northern hemisphere. The 70-seat planetarium is situated beside the harbour and in the shadow of Mount Gabriel. Shows are held on several evenings during the summer, usually at 8pm, but to check definitive times, call 028 28315.

CASTLETOWNSHEND, around 8km from Skibbereen, is a very picturesque and tranquil coastal village developed around a small 17th century castle which was built by Richard Townshend and whose descendants still reside there. The castle is open to the public as a bed and breakfast. The main street of the village is lined with homes from the 18th century and runs down a sharply sloped hill leading to Castlehaven Harbour and the castle with St. Barrahane’s Church overlooking the village. You’ll find a couple of pubs with good food available plus a shop. The harbour provides a safe place for boats to moor up.

West Cork is uniquely suited to kayaking, with its sheltered bays and inlets, its pristine waters and abundance of wildlife. It suits all kinds of people, young and old, beginners and experienced, and is a great option as a family outing. It is very easy to learn the basics of kayaking and with very little instruction you can be happily paddling along, breathing in the serenity of the sea and leaving all cares behind. For an unforgettable experience, try a moonlight kayaking trip with Atlantic Sea kayaking, winners of this years Responsible Tourism National Award, or a daytime Nature and wildlife tour, or even a seaweed foraging tour for something completely different! www.atlanticseakayaking.com

Visit Cape, Sherkin or Heir (Hare) Island

Any trip to this part of the world isn’t complete without taking a trip to one or more of the beautiful, inhabited islands off the coast. The Irish speaking (Gaeltacht) island of Cape Clear, population around 130, is the most southerly inhabited land in Ireland. There is a wonderful ‘Storytelling Festival’ (Sept) held annully on Cape Clear. It’s also a popular walking and running location. Sherkin Island is home to a historic Franciscan Friary and the ruins of an O’Driscoll clan castle, both of which date back to the 14th century. It has some lovely beaches (including Silver Strand) as well as a hotel and a pub. It’s a regular Sunday afternoon ferry-ride in the summer for locals and visitors. Heir Island has a population of around 20 and also enjoys some lovely sandy beaches as well as a restaurant, cookery school and baking school. Ferries run regularly through the summer from Baltimore pier, Cunnamore pier and from Schull harbour. Check timetables at piers and in local shops.

Learn to Sail

If you’ve ever fancied taking to the water or wish to refresh your skills, then West Cork is the place to do it.With excellent sailing schools located in Glandore and Schull – not to mention the brand new Baltimore Sailing Club facility – you’ll find courses for all abilities and even the opportunity to charter a boat for the day if you feel like letting somebody else do the work.

This is one of the world’s most elegant lighthouses and the tallest and widest in Ireland and Britain. Operators from Baltimore, Cape Clear and Schull run boat trips around the Fastnet, the ‘Teardrop of Ireland’.Without actually landing on the rock, you can pass close by the foot of the 54 m (177 ft) high tower of Cornish granite, gaze up at the revolving lantern and gain a sense of the scale of engineering required to place it there.

The pretty pods - modelled on the beehive huts of ancient monks - are a huge hit with adults and kids alike. These self-contained, cosy, homes are arranged around a communal area and popular with walkers, renting either the solo pods or the family-sized options. See a ‘Road Bowling’ match

Visit an old time Threshing festival

Old time threshing days and vintage fairs can be found throughout West Cork across the summer months. They celebrate the historic traditions of rural Ireland and rural life at harvest time. You’ll find old tractors and machinery, often beautifully maintained and restored, as well as other attractions for the family and kids. See The Southern Star newspaper for details.

Road bowling is played mostly in Armagh and Co Cork, particularly West Cork in which competitors attempt to take the fewest throws to propel a metal ball along a country road. Big crowds of spectators often line the roads to watch, bet big on the outcome and proffer advice to their favoured competitor in the course of a match or “score”. To find out whether a match is planned nearby ask locally or pick up a copy of The Southern Star sports section.

Take a drive, marvel at our scenery

Our final suggestion is to simply jump in your car on a nice sunny day and enjoy the views along this stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way. Here’s a suggested route: Leap, Glandore, Union Hall, Castletownshend, Toe Head, Tragumna, Lough Hyne, Baltimore, Skibbereen, Ballydehob, Schull, Goleen and Mizen Head. You could even split this route over two days. Be sure to make regular stop-offs and taste some of the wonderful local food on offer.

...things to do on a rainy day

The Treehouse Indoor Play & Café in Skibbereen is an indoor play area for children who will love to spend time in the activity area while their parents take a break in the café and avail of some of the delicious treats on offer. If your child is celebrating a birthday while they are in the area, the Treehouse offers packages for groups of all sizes, including food and drinks.

Find a fairy house

Once the kids have appropriate wet gear (and wellies, of course) let them loose in either Rineen or Dromahillily Woods (see 50 things) and put the in a competition to find the most fairy homes. If they have smartphones, tell them to take photos as evidence. The many café’s in the nearby villages of Leap or Union Hall can be offered as a ‘treat’ for the winner.

While away an hour reading

Skibbereen’s library has a very attractive and comfortable children’s books section where kids can while away an hour or two reading and enjoying the great selection. If you join up, for just a few euro, you can also borrow a good DVD. Adults will be delighted to hear that Cork libraries now have an app, for just a few euro for the year, which will allow you download from a massive list of books and top selling magazines.

Café culture

One thing West Cork is not short of is restaurants and cafés, serving wholesome, healthy food and delicious homemade treats. Do some café-hopping on a rainy day, with a Latté here, or a toastie there, while engaging in that universally delightful pastime – people-watching.

Take time out

If it’s raining outside, then what better time to treat yourself to some ‘me’ time, by spending a few hours just chilling. There are a number of pools and leisure centres in the West Cork area with a pay-as-you-go policy, which means you don’t have to sign up to avail of saunas, steam rooms and heated pools. Ring ahead to check public hours.

Charles Fort is open all year to visitors and is one of the best surviving examples of a 17th Century star-shaped fort. Much of its original 1678 construction remains. The fort was actively used by the military until 1922. It is also a popular civil weddings venue now, too.

Located in the sheltered waters of Glengarriff harbour, Garinish Island is home to one of the most luscious gardens in Ireland. There is so much to see on the island, from the Martello tower, to alluring walled gardens, the Japanese gardens, the Casita, hidden beaches and the 100 steps that leave you with a sense of enchantment. There are ferries which operate from Glengarriff and on the way, you will pass the seal colony where the languid creatures can be spotted taking in the sun.

Prince August Toy Soldier factory, Kilnmartyra

This hidden gem, south of Macroom and north of Bantry, is a wonderful place to spend a morning or afternoon with the kids. If you book ahead, they can make their own metal figures, from a variety of casts – fairies, soldiers and jewellery. There is even a painting area to finish off their creative work, and the shop sells kits for making their own toy soldiers and other items. The world’s largest toy soldier exhibit is on display in the factory for the next five years. The 15,000-strong toy soldier replica of the Battle of Waterloo was opened in May.

Bantry House and Gardens, Bantry

Bantry House is the ancestral home of the Earls of Bantry and is still owned and run by direct descendants of the Earls. The house and gardens command stunning views over the bay and the gardens which include lawn tennis courts, mazes and the famous climb of 103 steps, are stunning to explore. Tours of the house are given and there is a café on site.

Situated at the end of the Mizen Peninsula, the visitor centre is a fantastic place to visit. The recently refurbished bridge across the massive crevice in the rock is not for the faint-hearted, but a stunning place to take photographs, or simply listen to the waves crashing below. The keeper’s kitchen and bedroom at the signal station at the end of the walk has been preserved as it was, as a tribute to the lifestyle of the men of the Irish Lights. There are many fascinating displays to be seen, both here at the signal station and back at the interactive visitor centre at the start.
