From the 1880s to the present – a proud tradition

CLONAKILTY Food Company are passionate about bringing great tasting quality products into the homes of customers. Their story dates back to the 1880s where Clonakilty Blackpudding was first made using a secret recipe, passed down through the generations in Edward Twomey’s family butcher shop. Since then, they have grown their collection of products to include white pudding, sausages, rashers, and veggie pudding.

They are proud Guaranteed Irish members and Origin Green Gold members. Their commitment is to expand their range of products, and to do so using Irish sourced ingredients and sustainable methods where possible.

At Clonakilty Food Company they operate a food manufacturing plant, they own and operate Edward Twomey’s Butcher Shop in Clonakilty and in 2020 added Clonakilty Blackpudding Visitor Centre.

Visitor Centre offers visitors an immersive tour of this famous Irish Food Company. Visitors experience the story of Clonakilty Blackpudding through a guided or self-guided tour with multi-sensory interactive displays and visual displays. During the visitor experience, visitors can discover what life was like in rural Ireland back in the late 1880s while learning the history of Clonakilty Blackpudding and how it has evolved through the ages. The tour takes visitors right into the heart of an Irish food story that is filled with a strong sense of family, tradition and Clonakilty pride.

Visitors can learn how Clonakilty’s Blackpudding original recipe dates back to the 1880’s, when Johanna O’Brien, a farmer’s wife, from Sam’s Cross, Co. Cork, wanted to subsidise the household income by making black pudding for Harrington’s butcher shop in Clonakilty. That same butcher shop remains in Clonakilty town today, now owned by the Twomey Family who bought the shop and its secret recipe in 1976.

Through each touchpoint they show Irish consumers what goes into creating one of Irelands most loved brands, a story and a secret recipe that dates back to the 1800s, a shop that is a cornerstone of the local community and a product range that is loved locally, nationally and internationally.
