FALL 2017

Friends, Welcome to 2017 at The Southern! This year’s season is chock full of incredible art and entertainment. The Southern brings dance, theatre, and music to the stage in a unique blend of genres and styles - all in our intimate 165-seat house. There’s no better space in the Twin Cities to experience the arts. With the help of the wonderful presenting companies, The Southern continues to refine the quality of our programming — and we’re so excited about what we have in store! Nearly all of the art on our stage is local, created by artists who live and work in the Twin Cities. From playwrights to choreographers, dancers to actors, directors to designers, the faces and voices of The Southern are made up of Twin Cities denizens who bring their stories to our stage to share with you. Our partnership with Altered Esthetics continues into 2017, bringing local visual arts to The Southern as well. Thanks to the ARTshare program, members are taking advantage of this diverse array of performances whenever they want, as many times as they want. At The Southern we believe that seeing the performing arts should be as simple as showing up. If you aren’t a member yet, we encourage you to consider adding yourself to the member community. You can find out more about becoming an ARTshare member at southerntheater.org, at the kiosk in the lobby, or by speaking with any Southern staff member or employee. We hope you enjoy our 2017 season, whether you see a single show from your favorite company or try out a plethora of new work from our roster with an ARTshare membership. There is so much to enjoy! Warmly yours, Southern Theater Board & Staff

April Sellers Dance Collective Samantha Johns & Nona Invie Kristi Faulkner Dance and DaNCEBUMS

GORGE Oct 19–22

A collective of local dance companies present GORGE, the void where dance meets rock. GORGE is a four-part performance series where no show is ever dull. DaNCEBUMS opens each evening with their riotous approach to dance in Press Kit. Next, April Sellers Dance Collective recreates their work The Animal Corridor with a new cast member. Alternating performances with ASDC, Samantha Johns and Nona Invie create an ode. Finally, Detroit-based Kristi Faulkner Dance closes out every night (and their tour to Minneapolis via the GRUNT network) with Four Letter Word.

Twin Cities Horror Festival TCHF VI Oct 26—Nov 6

n artist-centric organization, Twin Cities Horror Fest strives to maximize A both audience entertainment and payout to artists. Last year, TCHF issued more that 2,300 tickets during its 11 day run, and paid 85% of total ticket sales to participating artists. Four Humors Theater launched the festival in 2012 as a juried, horrorthemed, live-performance arts festival spanning the two weekends surrounding Halloween. In 2014, several artists and producers -- many of whom were involved with the first two seasons -- formalized their commitment to continuing TCHF by forming United Festival Group, LLC, which now oversees the festival’s operation. The company’s owners include Matt Allex, Jason Ballweber, Debra Berger, Mike Fotis, Katie Hartman, Ryan Lear, Chip Limeburner, Jenn Newman, Tyler Olsen, Dan Peltzman, Erin Sheppard, and Matt Spring.

We depict horror on stage because we know it is fake. The pain and deaths are not real. We have control. We know life is precious. It is not to be wasted. We also know the human experience is a complicated one full of wonderful and terrible things. We want to learn something about ourselves.

Raw Sugar & Theatre Corrobora Based on/A True Story: Two New Plays Nov 16—19

This two-play event explores the personal, real-life stories of three local female artists. The narratives are connected by a common thread: What does it mean to think you know the life path you are on?

The first play of the evening, FADEAWAY GIRL, is the true story of playwright/performer Rachel Petrie’s experience coming to terms with a bipolar disorder diagnosis. From her very first manic episode in 2004 to present day, Rachel shares her personal stories of derailment, discovery, reinvention, and joy.

The second, THE CRITIC AND THE DRAMA QUEEN, was inspired by the story of real-life friends and Theatre Corrobora co-producers Aidan Jhane Gallivan and Hailey Colwell. The play follows the evolution of a friendship between an actor and a writer and the scary places it can go when artistic pride gets in the way.

BRKFST Seconds Nov 30—Dec 3

Formerly known as In New Company, these seven dynamic performers, each with distinct training backgrounds, aesthetics and specialties present the product of four years of investigative, collaborative dance-making. The evening features imaginative works that tease the edges of breakin’, martial arts, burlesque, and contemporary dance vernacular. At times, intensely physical and chaotic, at others precise and contemplative. A taste of BRKFST will prove that time flies when you’re having fun. You’ll be wishing for more.

Exposed Brick Theatre Cloth Dec 7—10

How much is too much? How little is too little? And who gets to decide? From burkas to bikinis; from garments that nip and tuck to what not to wear after 40; from Mom jeans to ever changing fashion trends; when it comes to women’s clothing it seems like everyone has an opinion. CLOTH is a new work that explores women’s relationship to cloth, covering and choice, and the avalanche of factors influencing that choice.
