SPRING 2017
Friends, Welcome to 2017 at The Southern! This year’s season is chock full of incredible art and entertainment. The Southern brings dance, theatre, and music to the stage in a unique blend of genres and styles - all in our intimate 165 seat house. There’s no better space in the Twin Cities to experience the arts. With the help of the wonderful presenting companies, The Southern continues to refine the quality of our programming -- and we’re so excited about what we have in store! Nearly all of the art on our stage is local, created by artists who live and work in the Twin Cities. From playwrights to choreographers, dancers to actors, directors to designers, the faces and voices of The Southern are made up of Twin Cities denizens who bring their stories to our stage to share with you. Our partnership with Altered Esthetics continues into 2017, bringing local visual arts to The Southern as well. Thanks to the ARTshare program, members are taking advantage of this diverse array of performances whenever they want, as many times as they want. At The Southern we believe that seeing the performing arts should be as simple as showing up. If you aren’t a member yet. we encourage you to consider adding yourself to the member community - you can find out more about becoming an ARTshare member at southerntheater.org, at the kiosk in the lobby, or by speaking with any Southern staff member or employee. Theatre Novi Most The Master Builder
the show
Apr 14—22
The Master Builder follows master architect Halvard Solness (Pearce Bunting) and his wife Aline (Barbra Berlovitz) through an existential midlife crisis involving past losses that still haunt and profound fear about the future. The challenges of a captivating young woman (Shelby Richardson) seem to bring some answers, but as always, Ibsen keeps us in suspense. The Master Builder is highly charged with secret desires, Freudian and Nietzschean motives and… there is that troll (Alex Barreto Hathaway). Henrik Ibsen’s stunning poetic language is adapted and directed by Theatre Novi Most co-founder Vladimir Rovinsky.
the company Renowned for its inquisitive nature in developing work, Mathew Janczewski’s ARENA DANCES re-draws the boundaries of its own work, challenging the bodies’ physical extremes and that of the body in relation to others and the space. ARENA creates and performs original modern dance choreography promoting community gathering, dialogue and impact. ARENA DANCES incorporates a highly kinetic style of movement and a sweeping physicality that takes in a broad range of feelings. Candy Box is made possible with funding from the McKnight Foundation, Target Foundation, and individual contributions. Picturing That Day was commissioned by the Kevin J. Mossier Foundation.

the show Edmund Kean, a titan of his generation, collapses on stage, leaving Covent Garden without their Othello. Ira Aldridge, an unknown African American actor, is invited to take over the role. But as the public riot in the streets over the abolition of slavery, how will the cast, critics and audience react to the revolution taking place in the theatre?

AE at The Southern We envision a vibrant, inclusive arts community that supports artists and their engagement with a wider audience. We envision an economically vital arts community where diverse views and opinions can be exchanged. To support our vision we provide open spaces for participatory arts experiences. In 2014, we began a partnership with The Southern Theater during Ae Without Walls, a time when we closed our gallery doors at the Q.arma Building in Northeast Minneapolis to explore pop-up exhibitions. Our partnership has expanded over the last couple of years, and as of January 2016, The Southern is now Ae’s home!
