SUMMER 2017

Friends, Welcome to 2017 at The Southern! This year’s season is chock full of incredible art and entertainment. The Southern brings dance, theatre, and music to the stage in a unique blend of genres and styles - all in our intimate 165-seat house. There’s no better space in the Twin Cities to experience the arts. With the help of the wonderful presenting companies, The Southern continues to refine the quality of our programming — and we’re so excited about what we have in store! Nearly all of the art on our stage is local, created by artists who live and work in the Twin Cities. From playwrights to choreographers, dancers to actors, directors to designers, the faces and voices of The Southern are made up of Twin Cities denizens who bring their stories to our stage to share with you. Our partnership with Altered Esthetics continues into 2017, bringing local visual arts to The Southern as well. Thanks to the ARTshare program, members are taking advantage of this diverse array of performances whenever they want, as many times as they want. At The Southern we believe that seeing the performing arts should be as simple as showing up. If you aren’t a member yet, we encourage you to consider adding yourself to the member community. You can find out more about becoming an ARTshare member at southerntheater.org, at the kiosk in the lobby, or by speaking with any Southern staff member or employee. We hope you enjoy our 2017 season, whether you see a single show from your favorite company or try out a plethora of new work from our roster with an ARTshare membership. There is so much to enjoy! Warmly yours, Southern Theater Board & Staff

Siyaasada Maanta - The Politics of Today Jul 26–28 This gripping political drama examines the intellectual curiosity of the Somali diaspora and its interpretation of Siyaasada Maanta, by providing an in-depth look into the lives of young Somali millennials burdened by expectation and duty. Attracted by the promise of a better life and stability, youth migrate from the homeland only to be swallowed by the waves of the sea, the metaphorical equivalent of a life encumbered by finding the balance between love of self and community. Meanwhile, young Somalis in the diaspora return to Somali burdened by their own memories and wounds that have been neglected or overlooked by history. What connections and commonalities do they share? How do they differ? These are “The Politics of Today.”

Theatre Novi Most (Theatre of a New Bridge) combines the artistic traditions of Russia and America to create performances in which seemingly disparate ideas, languages, cultures and ideologies can clash, commingle and cross-pollinate. Founded in 1998 by Russian director Vladimir Rovinsky and American director Lisa Channer, Theatre Novi Most creates new work for the stage and also reimagines theatre classics for a contemporary audience.

When I Nod My Head You Hit It With The Hammer Sept 15—23

Set in the depths of an antique theater, WHEN I NOD MY HEAD YOU HIT IT WITH THE HAMMER follows the story of a handful of walk-on / supernumerary performers. Surrounded by the debris of a thousand old stories and waiting for their cue, they accidentally contemplate their life choices. Along the way they must stay on the path, not fiddle with anyone else’s props and make it back in time for their cue. Comic, poetic and deeply personal, this world premiere new work explores themes of selfdoubt, personal adventure, wonder and hope. Directed by Jon Ferguson and Sara Richardson Featuring John Cooper, Jon Ferguson, Katherine Fried and Allison Witham (plus special guests)
