MOVING ON

A

lot has happened in Columbus and around the world since our first issue was published in the summer of 2004. We’re not brave enough to label these ten years as Columbus’ finest decade, after all is not a contest. However, we are more than happy to label these last ten years as… pretty amazing. Yes, there have been struggles and setbacks. In the magazine business it is impossible to get everybody’s blessings, but we are one of the lucky ones since most of the feedback has been positive. The monthly letters to the editors and the congratulations notes from readers, friends and companies certifies that assumption. SVM readers are engaged readers who look forward to seeing the magazine in their mailbox and on the stands each month. It makes our life very fulfilling. At SVM we believe that in order to succeed in the magazine business, we have to design our publication around our readers’ interests and what they like most so we can evolve our reporting focus. Your feedback and continued advisement has helped us develop and enhance the product we have today. After all, magazines are a window to American culture. And I feel much the same about Southern Views Magazine,

which has been the window to Columbus life and lifestyles for this past decade. While some things at SVM will remain the same, we are also committed to advancing and improving our publication to serve the growing diversity of our readership. However, we also now cover a new generation of twenty-and thirty-something’s that have emerged on the scene and continue to make a difference in the city. I would like to sincerely thank our advertisers to whom we are indebted. Many have been with us since the beginning, and all have assured that the magazine reflects the lifestyles and interests of our readers. As with any business, there were several personnel changes over the years, however, there are some supporters who have been with SVM since its inception, such as Becky Buck in advertisement and Sammie Saxon who has been the magazine’s chief photographer since the very first issue and continues to showcase his amazing talent on every issue. We also want to thank our team of publishing professionals— writers, photographers, sales force, interns, printing company—who, behind the scenes, keep every moving part of the complex process of publishing happening and on time.

What do you consider your most Southern characteristics? My most Southern characteristic is that I say “y'all” way too often. You’ve been given access to a time machine. Where and when would you travel to? I would love to go to LA in the 1960s because everyone was glamorous and there was no social media. If you could change one thing about the world it would be? It would be for everyone to stop judging others all the time and be more accepting of who they are. What are you most grateful for? I am most grateful for my family who is always there for me and for the opportunity to live in such a beautiful beach town.

Today, on behalf of the people who have worked for Southern Views Magazine over the past 10 years and the hundreds of businesses who have supported SVM, and to you—our readers—I would like to say a sincere, “Thank you.” And here’s to another 10 successful years. Cheers,

Editor-in-Chief .

onthecover What is your biggest pet peeve? My biggest pet peeve is fluorescent lights in school. What is your ultimate beauty indulgence? I usually don't wear make-up except for mascara. So I'm always on the look out for a good one. If you are not reading Southern Views what other magazines do you read? I love Lucky Magazine and Cosmo because they always give the best beauty advice and fashion advice. INTERVIEW

2014 STEEPLECHASE RACE DIRECTOR With this year being the 30th anniversary of Callaway Garden’s Steeplechase, 2014 Race Director Laura Wickham is excited to make this momentous year an event to remember. BY ANDREA HAYES

Callaway Gardens is holding its 30th annual Steeplechase this November in Pine Mountain, Georgia. This event is the biggest fundraiser for Columbus and the Valley area and many volunteers go into making it a success. This year’s Race Director, Laura Wickham, tells SVM about her involvement with Steeplechase and the many fun activities and races event goers can expect to see.

W

hat are some of your duties as the 2014 Steeplechase Race Director? The duties of the Race Director begin way before the November Race. All of the committee chairmen are chosen in the spring to fill their various areas. These volunteers coordinate everything from Raffle Sales, Ad Sales, Guarantor Tent and Auction to Infield Vendors and much more. My job also includes selecting the Featured Artist for the year. We are really thrilled to have the very talented Katie Jacobson fill that spot for us. Her artwork is the basis for most of our marketing material. As Race Director, I am responsible for a variety of advertising needs, such as invitations, posters, and even billboards. And, of course, it is my duty to represent the Steeplechase in communitywide functions, as well as make appearances on television and radio. How did you first get involved with Steeplechase? Steeplechase has been a fun part of my life here in Columbus for the past twenty-five years. There are so many areas where volunteers

21 soviewsmag.com

can work and get involved. I have enjoyed being a part of several aspects of the Race: volunteering in the office through Historic Columbus, helping with Guarantor Tent decorations, co-chairing the Silent Auction, and aiding in the set-up of the Terrace and Infield areas.

Steeplechase has been a fun part of my life here in Columbus for the past twenty-five years. There are so many areas where volunteers can work and get involved. What are some of your favorite memories at Steeplechase? Our family has made it a tradition to attend the ‘Chase almost every year for the past twenty-four years. I have so many fond memories of our girls and their friends in the Infield on the Reserved Rail watching the horses race by. Often times, we could only stay for a partial day before traveling to Atlanta for a soccer game!

This year marks the 30th year Steeplechase has been running. With this year being such a momentous year, are there any special events Steeplechase goers can expect? Yes, three decades of thoroughbreds and tradition are certainly worth celebrating! We are really fortunate that Mason Lampton had the vision of Steeplechase in 1985. We are hosting some special events prior to Race Day this year to honor our past Race Directors and Sponsors. And we are always looking forward to the After Race Band Party held in the Terrace area on Race Day. Steeplechase designed customized Steeplechase Vineyard ties and commemorative plates to act as one-of-a-kind souvenirs for their 25th Anniversary. Will there be any special pieces for this year’s Race Day? Yes, our Souvenir Tents will be stocked with the usual greatlooking tees, hats, and koozies. We also have quite a few 30th Anniversary items on order, but you will have to come to the ‘Chase to see and buy them.

ALDAY CHIROPRACTIC With so much stress from everyday life, the job of the chiropractor is to remove interference that may be impairing normal health through specific chiropractic adjustments, allowing your body to heal itself. By Andrea Hayes

D

r. Heather Alday talked with SVM about how chiropractic care can be more than a trip to the doctor with her faith based and holistic treatments.

When did you start your practice? I moved to Columbus in 2001 after finishing chiropractic school in Marietta, Georgia. I opened my practice in October of that year. It has been an awesome adventure. In addition to chiropractic care, what types of services are currently being offered? Indeed my staff and I do offer chiropractic care but we offer several additional services. We have decompression therapy, Aqua Chi Footbaths, vitamin supplements and DoTerra oils. Decompression therapy helps when a patient is dealing with a herniated or bulging disc. The Aqua Chi Footbath helps to detox the body. Vitamins and oils help to reduce inflammation, swelling and improves general well-being. How does Chiropractic care help you? It helps in numerous ways. It helps with neck, arm, leg and low back pain. It can also alleviate headaches and sinus pressure. It helps to relieve pain from degenerative joint disease, arthritis and TMJ. Stress, better sleep, improved movement and coordination are great benefits of chiropractic care as well. Also, it can help to heal the body after being involved in an accident. Benefits are different from one person to another. Why should someone see a Chiropractor? Chiropractic care is a way to alleviate or decrease many musculoskeletal problems without the use of medications or the need for surgery. Keeping in mind it can also help prevent joint aches and pains.

How is it different than other treatments? Chiropractic care is noninvasive. The low impact adjustment corrects misalignment issues. This allows a person to return to their normal daily activities with no pain. I also have patients report that it makes hobbies such as golf, tennis and yard work much easier. Once you go to the Chiropractor, will you have to go the rest of your life? While you do not have to see a Chiropractor forever, it is recommended that you at least have a maintenance plan in place with your Chiropractor. Just like you see your general practitioner for preventative care, seeing your Chiropractor periodically can keep you aligned which can prevent the pain you had from returning. Why Chiropractic? I would probably say why not chiropractic? I’m not trying to sound cliché though. I really love what I do. I was helped by a chiropractor when I was a teenager and decided this was what I wanted to do too. I am able to help people with a myriad of problems and thru the spinal adjustment it affects the person’s nervous system which reduces the symptoms the person has suffered. This all happens without the use of medication or surgery. What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category? We are a Christian based business. We use a natural and holistic approach to healing the body and helping to diminish pain. We accomplish this through several different techniques. svm soviewsmag.com

INTERVIEW

DR. JOSEPH CERAVOLO Your eyes are your gateway to the world around you. Dr. Joseph Ceravolo, founder of North Columbus Eye Center, is committed to offering concierge-style patient care and the most advanced vision correction options to residents of the Columbus, Opelika-Auburn and Montgomery areas. By Andrea Hayes Dr. Ceravolo talked with SVM about his goal in providing the most modern, state-of-the-art ophthalmic treatment available, paired with the comprehensive patient care that sets North Columbus Eye Center apart from other eye care centers. Dr. Ceravolo received his undergraduate and medical school training from State University of New York at Buffalo. He completed his residency in general surgery and practiced emergency medicine for several years before completing his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Buffalo. How long has North Columbus Eye Center been helping Columbus residents attain better eye health? We have been serving the greater Columbus area for the past 12 years. We also have an office in Auburn, the Auburn LASIK & Eye Institute, and one in Montgomery called Montgomery LASIK & Eye Center. At what age should people become conscious of their eyes and how to keep them in the best shape? We start to screen for most eye diseases at the age of 30.

What’s your area of expertise? My area of expertise includes vision correction procedures, including all laser Z-LASIK and advanced Active Life Lens® Procedures with Crystalens HD™, Tecnis® Multifocal lens, AcrySof®, ReSTOR® and Visian™ ICL. Most people have been told to “eat their carrots” since they were small children. Can eating certain foods really enhance eye health? Not really. These are commercially available eye vitamins that seem to slow the progression of macular degeneration.

Dr. Ceravolo performs the Z-LASIK procedure to improve your vision by actually re-shaping your cornea with highly precise beams of laser light. What types of procedures and eye care is offered at your practice? Cataract surgery, Lasik surgery, lifestyle intraocular lenses for near vision correction, Botox, Juvederm facial fillers, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), corneal transplant, removal of skin lesions and laser surgery for glaucoma. Who is eligible for Lasik eye surgery? With newer technology, almost everyone is a candidate. Are there any new technologies in eye health that can help prevent common diseases and conditions like cataracts and glaucoma? No. These are things that occur naturally. Causatine agents have not been identified. Glaucoma seems to have a familial component, but not definitive. svm soviewsmag.com

MIRANDA

KERR Her beauty has earned her millions, and men fight over her wherever she goes. According to Forbes, she is the second- highest-paid model in the world after Gisele Bundchen. Miranda Kerr, the eternal Victoria Secret Angel is the most talked-about model of the moment. BY R. CALIGARIS

INTERVIEW

W

hat a thing to be so beautiful inside and out that you can reduce grown millionaires, elves and arrogant manchildren to street-brawling yobs. The Aussie model Miranda Kerr's name hangs over the biggest tabloid dustups of recent months like a latter-day Helen of Troy; most recently, [in July], her ex-husband, Orlando Bloom, took aim at rumored fling Justin Bieber in a restaurant in Ibiza. All this tabloid drama is totally at odds with the woman Kerr says she is. The flyleaf of her first self-help book, Treasure Yourself, says she can "shine the light of positivity on those who need it most". It is aimed at teens and twentysomethings: "my generation", as she calls them. It is not pitched at cynical journalists, who would find it all too easy to mock. She has laid her own insecurities out, and described how she overcame them. “People find it hard to believe there is more to me than what they see on the outside.” Meanwhile, the second book, Empower Yourself, is full of affirmations such as “I soothe my body and soul by taking a bath”, and “I speak up when I see someone is being bullied”.

every day, even if it’s just 10 minutes of squats or yoga or lunges or butt lifts. It really makes a difference. Still, Kerr recognizes that aging is inevitable, and she intends to embrace it. “Audrey Hepburn aged quite well,” she notes. What do you do when your body needs a little pick-me-up? I spray-tan before I walk down the runway”, she admits. I also use a dry brush to scrub my skin and stimulate my lymphatic system. Every day before I shower, just for two minutes. In a pinch, I’ll curl my eyelashes with the back of a spoon, using a flick of the wrist similar to what a florist would employ when using a pair of scissors to twirl a bit of ribbon. If you could try any profession other than your own, what would you try and why? As I mentioned before, I am currently studying nutrition and psychology via correspondence. I am studying it for my own personal knowledge and also so I have an education to fall back on if, and when, this profession ends. I am very passionate about the mind, body and soul connection and could very easily slip into that field. However, you never know what opportunity is around the corner. I am very open to letting things fall into place as they should.

After relocating to New York in 2004, she landed a string of great deals, starting with an appearance on Project Runway, then a contract with Maybelline and, eventually, a coveted pair of “wings” when she was cast as Victoria’s Secret’s first Australian Angel in 2008. Her trademark dimples—a cute, every-girl counterpoint to her curves—helped take her from working model to supermodel. (Forbes just ranked her second on its list of highestpaid models, behind Gisele Bündchen.)

What types of clothing make you feel good? I’m a very tactile person — I like clothing that feels good against my skin. I love high-waisted jeans, silky shirts, leather ankle boots and sunglasses in every size and shape. Célines are my favorites right now, but I wear my gold Miu Mius a lot too.

In 1997 you won the annual Dolly Magazine (Australia) model competition. Although young girls enter this competition every year, you did it when you were only 13 years old. What made you decide to enter this competition? One of my best friends entered me into the competition. I had no idea!

Who is your inspiration? I grew into my femininity over the last 10 years. I’m influenced by my grandmother. She’s always chic. Even if she’s just at home and cooking in the kitchen, she looks effortlessly put together.

Is it true that you give most of your clothes away? I have a philosophy. I give a couple of Many of your peers consider you a true pieces away for every one that I get. MIND, BODY AND SOUL

How annoying is it to be asked if you eat real food? Considering I am studying nutrition via correspondence and I take my health seriously, it can be annoying.

You are a big fan of the color purple, correct? Why? When I was younger purple was my favorite color. Now, navy blue is my favorite color. It makes me feel peaceful.

Would you consider acting in the near future? I would definitely consider it. I feel very comfortable behind the camera.

You were born in Australia and your family is still there. What do you miss the most about being there? I miss my family the most! We are all so very close and it is hard not being able to see them all the time. svm

BO BARTLETT There is something uniquely American about the art of Bo Bartlett. Born in Columbus, Bo’s work certainly shows the influence of Wyeth, as well as other American artists like Thomas Eakins, Edward Hopper, and Winslow Homer. By Andrea Hayes

U

sing his art to comment on social issues and capture historic moments, Columbus native and contemporary artist, Bo Bartlett, has been contributing to the art world for the past four decades. His latest project has him working in conjunction with Columbus State University in the development of a Contemporary Art Center that will help not only CSU students, but also Columbus residents grow and appreciate various kinds of art. Bo talked with SVM about his work, his views on art and his work with CSU.

INTERVIEW

When did you first decide that you wanted to be a painter? Before I could talk. I always drew, always said I wanted to be an artist. As a child, I was slow to talk. (Didn't talk until I was four.) And even then just didn't say much, which meant speech class in school. Later on ultrasounds revealed that I don't have a left vertebral artery, so I probably wasn't getting much blood to the verbal side of the brain. So I suppose I overcompensated visually, using drawing and painting to express myself. I still do. There were a few other professions I considered briefly when I was young... being a clown or a preacher, they didn't seem sustainable to me, and I was pretty good at drawing, but not very funny or pious.

The Samaritans, 2014, Oil on Linen

I love all art. I am not a purist. Sometimes people may assume that I am because of the form that my work takes; but as Robert Henri said, "if one looks at any piece of art long enough, one can find some worth in it. How did your friends and family respond? My family was very supportive. No one knew what being an artist really looked like. There were a few in town, who I made a point to visit regularly. I used to go bother Wendell Taylor, Gerry Bosch, and Henry Nordhausen in their studios. I was just a kid, but very curious. I had good art teachers growing up, Mrs. Tanner at St.Elmo, Ms. Dodd at Richards, A.T. Nicholson and Jan Miller at Brookstone. My teachers were always encouraging, realizing that I best expressed myself through art. One of my English teachers at Brookstone (Mrs. Mary Hugenberg ) gave me Chaim Potok's My Name is Asher Lev when I was a senior. As you may know, the main character Asher is struggling with his religious upbringing and his desire to make art. He goes to Florence to study. So I did what Asher did. At 18, I left Columbus and travelled to Florence, Italy. What is your artistic philosophy? I love all art. I am not a purist. Sometimes people may assume that I am because of the form that my work takes; but as Robert Henri said, “if one looks at any piece of art long enough, one can find some worth in it.

INTERVIEW Anything goes, and that's a good thing. But, that said, I believe in a sound artistic training. One wouldn't imagine a student going into a music school and the professors saying, “Ok, now express yourself.” One must learn the basics first, must have a strong foundation in the fundamentals, history, theory, styles, materials and techniques. The same is true for art training and for Art School. It takes years of practice to master ones craft. But, craft is not separate from expression, they go hand in hand, the form ones craft takes is directly related to what one has to express. Personally, because of where I'm from and how I was raised, I want to be liked, I don't want to alienate anyone, so I want my art to be accessible, on the surface anyway. It has many layers and is accessible to different audiences in different ways. You’ve recently wrapped up a solo exhibition in South Carolina. How would you describe the differences between your work today and your work when you first started painting? Stylistically, my art hasn't changed very much in 40 plus years. It was darker when I was younger, more angst driven, more serious. I've been told that it is a bit lighter now and I suppose it's true, as one ages, one had best start to have a sense of humor and see the joy in things. But, I like things best (films, plays, novels, etc.) when they are deadly serious and hilariously funny at the same time, when one finds themselves laughing and crying, pulled in both directions emotionally at the same time. I think that this is possible in art as well, but very difficult to pull off. You have been described as an “American realist with a modernist vision”. Where does your inspiration come from? Dreams. Something I'll see on the street. Something I'll pass in a car on the highway. A photojournalist’s photo. Sometimes, previous art might be a catalyst. But the work has to operate on all levels to hold me. It has to be a subject that I relate to personally, emotionally, psychologically, and then there has to be a sociological component, a historical relevance, a political aspect, a philosophical or religious facet, and usually an Art historical in-joke.

Galilee, 2014, Oil on Linen, 80 x 120 in.

I teach a master class at CSU and I work closely with the art professors there. We have a vibrant art program and it is ready to

expand exponentially. We are very excited about the Center. It will be a vital Art Center.

Bo Bartlett is an American realist with a modernist vision.

Lifeboat, 1998, Oil on Linen, 80 x 100 in.

The Bo Bartlett Center will be a major addition to the College of Arts at Columbus State University. Can you tell us more about the Center? I teach a master class at CSU and I work closely with the art professors there. We have a vibrant art program and it is ready to expand exponentially. We are very excited about the Center. It will house a large selection of my work combined from several different private collections locally and nationally. There will be an archive of journals, sketchbooks and reference materials on display to recreate and make transparent the creative process. The archive will be capable of growing to provide a repository for other artists’ work for scholars and historians. There will be a permanent collection of my work on exhibition as well as a rotating exhibition space for contemporary shows. svm

INTERVIEW

PASSION FOR FASHION Those of us living and working at a fast pace know just how difficult it is to keep up with what's trending in fashion — much less make time to shop. Meet Diana Harbour, a Columbus native, and owner of the Red Dress Boutique in Athens, Georgia, who delivers the solution with her thriving online boutique.

BY ANDREA HAYES

INTERVIEW

P

eople today don’t have to leave their homes or apartment to go shopping. They can sit on the couch in their PJs, open their laptop and just go online to shop for clothes. Why open a store? I opened the store nine years ago, prior to the internet shopping craze. I was working as a credit card processor in Columbus, Ga. and I just felt stifled creatively. My dad said you have two things in life: “you have security or freedom”. Sometimes you get both, but most often you have to choose. I wanted freedom to do what I wanted to do more than I wanted the security of that paycheck. I knew I could turn whatever I did into something big.

and he was skeptical at first. But within seconds of the site being live we had our first order. Growth was slow at first, but I kept at it and at first it started with students doing in store pick-ups and shopping from class. Then as they went home for the summer and told others, we started getting orders from Atlanta and Florida and South Carolina. Then in 2012, when we began rolling out regular lookbooks, growth exploded. And it hasn’t slowed down since. We are on target to double what we did last year just in online sales.

I graduated from Columbus State University, but my husband graduated from UGA, and after my first visit to Athens, Georgia, I fell in love with the town. I just knew a store would work in Athens and it has.

Where do you get the inspirations your in-house designs? I draw inspirations from runway shows. Runway shows generally show the dream. Most of it is not wearable in every day life. So I pick and choose from trends I see and translate them into how I think it could be worn.

Many boutique owners view their shops as an extension of their closet. Is that true with you as well? To a point. But any successful boutique knows you have to shop for your customers and not yourself. That is why I created “Buy for the Boutique.” Before, customers didn’t have a voice in their choices and now they do. Every day we post items on our social media pages and ask them what they would like. That feedback is gold! And my personal style is all over the place.

Fall is right around the corner. What are some of your favorite trends for the season? I am so happy plaid is back! So right now my fall closet is stocked full of oversized plaid shirts, a good pair of skinny jeans and boots. My favorite shoe trend is the bootie and in colors of smoky gray and oxblood. Also dark florals in navys and plums. This fall is all about color and drawing inspiration from nature. So you will see a lot of burnt oranges, deep reds, olive greens and browns. It’s stunningly beautiful this year.

I pretty much dress for my mood. One day I may feel like wearing boho. Another I may be preppy from head to toe. That’s the beauty of personal style. You make it your own. You make the rules. Every woman is familiar with the “little black dress”, but not necessarily a red dress. Where did the name of your store come from? I was stumped for a name for the store. And one afternoon my mother and I were sorting old photos and she brought out a bunch of me when I was two. In every photo I was wearing a red dress. She told me that I was obsessed with red as a toddler and would only wear red dresses for a long time. So we named it after my two year old self. It also fit Athens, Ga pretty well. Your online store is well known throughout the Southeast and even throughout the country. Did you ever expect your business and merchandise to be so popular? I did because I know how hard I work. The website just turned four. It will be five this December. I rembemer telling my husband I wanted to start a website

What is one item every woman should have in her closet? A pair of good boots! A great pair of boots is an investment. And one good pair can last you for years.

“It’s up to me how successful I want to be and there is no one to push me but myself. It was the best advice anyone ever gave me.”

What is your shopping weakness? Boots. Definitely boots. I collect them. My husband made the mistake of counting how many pairs I own. I had to calm the shore by telling him how well they depreciate with my own depreciation schedule of how many times I wear them vs. how many compliments I get. Accounting terms work with the men. What is your favorite thing about owning a boutique? Being my own boss. My father told me I was his worst employee ever due to the fact that I was a type A personality and I challenged everything. Therefore, the only job I was fit for was to be my own boss. It’s up to me how successful I want to be and there is no one to push me but myself. It was the best advice anyone ever gave me. And I wake up every day challenging myself to make the website better and bigger than the day before. svm soviewsmag.com

E It’s all about what you wear, what you eat and what you drink. It’s a fancy picnic at a horse race with delicious cocktails. Sometimes, the food is elaborate and at other times, it’s one giant tailgating affair! The Steeplechase is the place to be and to be seen! s the days grow shorter and colder, we all tend to crave drinks that look and taste autumnal, especially at The Steeplechase at Callaway.

A

One of my personal favorite brown spirits is Bulleit Bourbon. It has a strong fire on the nose with notes of chocolate and charred barrels. It is smooth going down, with a hint of plump red grapes to finish. It’s the perfect drink to pair with cheese on a crisp fall afternoon, watching the horses run! I suggest pairing with Rivers Edge Chevre, Morbier or a young Parmigiano Reggiano. Nothing is better than cheese and whiskey! Oh, and don’t forget the crackers! There are several foods that pair well with bourbon. Bourbon is a great complement to chocolate, especially dark chocolate. The more cacao, the better. Fruit that is tangy or tart, like apples or pears go well with the brown stuff. Try to stay away from fruits that contain too much citrus, like oranges. It will mask too much of the bourbon’s flavor. Smoky flavored steaks pair very well with bourbons, as long as they are prepared medium rare.

Winners Circle INGREDIENTS: 2 ounces Bulleit bourbon; 1 ounce Churchill ruby port; 1 teaspoon maple syrup; dash of Angostura bitters; and 3 cherries for garnish. Makes one serving. Combine bourbon, port, syrup, and bitters in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled champagne coupe and garnish with cherries.

FEATURE Smoked Dry Angus Sirloin 4 12 oz sirloin (New York) strip steaks; ¼ lb whole butter, diced; ¼ cup vegetable and olive oil blend, 2 cloves garlic peeled and left whole; 2 sprigs of rosemary; 2 sprigs of thyme; 1 shallot peeled and left whole, Kosher salt and black pepper to taste; 1 cup hickory or mesquite wood chips; 1 cup red wine. METHOD: Heat a cast iron skillet to high, add butter and oil, warm until butter is melted, add garlic, shallot and herbs. Sear steaks for approximately 2-3 minutes on each side, using a spoon to baste the meat. Remove from pan and let it rest on a rack with a tray underneath, cover with shallots, garlic and herbs until ready to smoke. Reserve the pan for potatoes and turnips. PREPARE THE SMOKER: Soak chips in wine for 20 minutes prior to cooking. Add steaks to the smoker and continue to cook until desired internal temperature is reached, approximately 15 minutes for medium rare.

Roasted Potatoes and Turnips 2 pounds fingerling or petite Yukon Gold potatoes, 6 petite baby turnips or 2 medium sized ones cut in 8ths, ½ cup white wine vinegar, 2 teaspoons Kosher salt, 2 tablespoons whole butter, 1 tablespoon of olive oil. METHOD: Put the unpeeled potatoes and turnips in a medium stock pot, fill with water and add vinegar and salt. Cook until they are fork tender. Remove from water and allow to cool in a shut pan, dice into 1 inch pieces. Using the cast iron pot from the steak preparation, heat two tablespoons of whole butter and oil; melt until the butter begins to turn a golden brown color (this will provide a nutty flavor). Sauté the potatoes and turnips until warm, season with salt and pepper, sprinkle with fresh herbs (chive, rosemary or thyme).

WINE SUGGESTION

2007 Beaulieu Vineyard Rutherford Cabernet Beaulieu Vineyard was founded at the turn of the 20th Century by Georges de Latour in California’s Napa Valley. He imported grapes and winemaking techniques from his native France, including aging his Cabernet in French oak barrels. The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford exhibits cedar, coffee and dark berry notes along with a dense ruby/purple color, a nice texture and a style that is somewhat of a throwback to the BV Cabernet Sauvignons made in the sixties and seventies. With pure fruit as well as an endearing texture, this is a beautiful wine to drink over the next 10-15 years. The 2007 Beaulieu Vineyard Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon expresses the terroir of the Rutherford appellation with lush, brambly blackberry, cassis and ripe black cherry character nuanced with cocoa, licorice, earth and cedar. Beaulieu Vineyard is the longest continually operating winery in Napa Valley. With over 100 years of rich history, the BV story speaks of a “beautiful place” and extraordinary people who shaped winemaking in America. HOME

Built in the mid-20th century for Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Jennings Sr., the Blanchard’s home has deep roots in Columbus. The original owners designed the home with the then popular revised Virginia Hunt Country style in mind. In the 1960s, the style and location of the home were perfect for each other—still rather undeveloped in comparison to today, the Green Island community was very much private and in the countryside. With five bedrooms, four full baths, and two half baths, the Blanchard home has ample space for the ever growing family and any guests they may want to spend time with. “Our family loves the land and enjoys outdoor recreation.” Olivia Blanchard told us. “This property has allowed us to enjoy what we love within the convenience of the city limits.” With plenty of outdoor space to enjoy their favorite activities, the family is in the perfect place to enjoy the countryside without missing out on the luxuries of city life. Few renovations have been made to the original structure, making much of the Blanchard home reflect the 18th century style the Jennings’ intended. Now white “it was originally painted a very soft grey green” Olivia shares. “The interior architecture details reflect the 18th century influence” she adds, and with the help of interior designer Arden Cheney, many of the design elements in the home continue the look.

A warm and inviting place to entertain family and friends, the living room houses many unique antiques from designer Arden Cheney. With custom upholstery from Winston Concepts, a stunning oriental rug from Moattar in Atlanta, Georgia, sofa by Kravet, chairs by Osborne and a Gloria Mani oil painting over the mantle, this room brings the Virginia Hunt Country aesthetic from the construction of the home inside.

This property has allowed us to enjoy what we love within the convenience of the city limits. With plenty of outdoor space to enjoy their favorite activities, the family is in the perfect place to enjoy the countryside without missing out on the luxuries of city life. With antiques and vintage inspired end tables, draperies, upholstry and artwork from local artists and sculptors, walking into the Blanchard home is like walking into the classic and sophisticated American past. One feature the Blanchards did add, though, is a porch on the back of the house overlooking the Chattahoochee River with the help of builder Steve Anthony and architect Jack Jenkins. “The view [was] really a motivating factor in our decision to move. It’s beautiful and unique to the area. The river is therapeutic and the light is ever changing” Olivia explains. With a perfect view to take it easy and relish in the sunset, it’s no wonder the Blanchards chose this historic home. Sitting quietly on the Chattahoochee with acres to enjoy most any outdoor activity imaginable, the Blanchard home supplies this fun loving family with the best of both worlds. svm soviewsmag.com

TOP: The Blanchard’s dining room is the place where family and friends come together to share meals and memories. Thibaut wallpaper, Kravet draperies and trim, an Oriental rug from Moattar and a unique chandelier by Atlanta’s Masterpiece Lighting all come together to make the dining room a one-of-akind masterpiece. Small antiques from William Huff Antiques and classic paintings complete the look. BOTTOM: Especially unique is the kitchen. Finished with pecky cyprus, the walls complement the hard wood floors by Chris Gil perfectly. Scalamadre draperies, appliances by Daniel Appliance and Moen kitchen faucets serve as flawless accents to finish off the kitchen.

TOP: Charming and picturesque, the master bedroom continues the 18th century aesthetic of the Blanchard home. A beautiful bedspread by Brunschwig & Fils covers the lovely four poster bed that sits in the middle of the master bedroom. A Stanton wool rug complements the preexisting draperies, linens, and upholstery by Kravet. While a rocking chair built by Olivia’s father, Cecil Cheves, sits by a window. BOTTOM: The sitting room allows visitors a place to sit and enjoy the family’s company while they are preparing meals without getting in the way of the process. Continuing the look of the kitchen, this sitting room is also finished with pecky cyprus walls, matching draperies, a rug from Moattar, an antique wooden chandelier from Masterpiece Lighting and Duralee sofa and lounge chairs.

COLUMBUS HERITAGE

Every city in the world has a beginning. Those that have survived the tests of time were only able to do so by people that saw promise and endless potential in the city, and the people, itself. This issue begins a new series recounting numerous influential and historic Columbus families. For the next few issues, we will be featuring various families in (and around) Columbus that have helped mold our great city into what it is today.

G. GUNBY JORDAN Native Georgian, Civil War veteran, innovator, entrepreneur, supporter of women’s suffrage, family man and friend to all, George Gunby Jordan is one of the many men that helped shape and develop Columbus (and the surrounding areas) into one of Georgia’s major cities. rmed with a booming personality and the entrepreneurial spirit, G. Gunby Jordan came to Columbus knowing that he would make a serious impact on society life in his adopted home. During the beginning of the 20th century, Jordan was one of the city’s most powerful and public citizens. Being well educated and unafraid to stand for what he thought was right, Jordan possessed an imposing appearance with all he encountered.

Home of G. Gunby Jordan in Green Island where he lived until 1930.

Born June 19,1846 in Sparta, Georgia, to Sylvester Franklin and Rachel Gunby Jordan (and one of six children), George Gunby Jordan was born into a family of pioneers. His ancestors were some of the first settlers in Massachusetts and as the Jordan family grew and prospered, they spread out along the east coast to Maryland and Georgia. As G. Gunby Jordan reached puberty, he was educated in the grammar and high schools of Sparta. At the age of seventeen, Jordan left Sparta to join the Confederate Army as a private in Nelson Rangers, a volunteer company from Georgia, which served as scouts and as escorts of Lieut. Gen. Stephen D. Lee, after he was appointed Corps Commander in Hood's Army. There he met and fought side by side many Columbus natives.

After almost 20 years of devoted service to Eagle & Phenix, Jordan turned his ambitions elsewhere and set his sights on the development of two new railroads designed to break the monopoly that the Central of Georgia Railroad had over Columbus, Georgia rail connections. Three months after the war, Jordan settled in Columbus, Georgia and immediately began looking for work. Distantly related to W.H. Young, Jordan knew exactly where to turn. In 1867, he was made the treasurer of the Eagle & Phenix Manufacturing Company by Young. Resourceful and business savvy, Jordan promptly asked for a few weeks’ delay before he started working, saying he needed to return to Sparta to take care of some family business. Whereupon Jordan went to East Georgia and learned bookkeeping.

A young G. Gunby Jordan circa 1864

Lizzie B. Curtis, born in Columbus, married Mr. Jordan in 1886.

Upon returning, Jordan immediately began his new position while also assuming the role of the company’s spokesman, eventually selling products to wholesalers throughout the South and Midwest and successfully lobbing in Washington in the 1870s to exempt the firm’s assets from a federal banking tax that Congress tried to impose. In the midst of these many great endeavors Jordan also found the time to start a family. He married Columbus native Lizzie B. Curtis in 1886. Unfortunately, their marriage was short lived when Lizzie died the following year leaving a son, Ralph Curtis Jordan.

In 1867, Mr. Jordan was made the treasurer of the Eagle & Phenix Manufacturing Co. soviewsmag.com

Later, after almost 20 years of devoted service to Eagle & Phenix, Jordan turned his ambitions elsewhere and set his sights on the development of two new railroads designed to break the monopoly that the Central of Georgia Railroad had over Columbus rail connections. As a result, the construction of the Georgia, Midland and Gulf Railroad to McDonough and the Columbus Southern Railroad to Albany were overseen by Jordan himself. While undertaking such a large project, Jordan remarkably found the time to join forces with W.C. Bradley and others to launch the Third National Bank (1888) and the Columbus Savings Bank (1889), which were combined in 1930 to form the Columbus Bank & Trust Company (CB&T). Jordan’s interests later returned to the Eagle & Phenix Mills after he was named a receiver for the Eagle & Phenix, which had experienced problems during the previous decade. After amassing investors, Jordan and his counterparts bought the mill and immediately started renovation in order to modernize the company. Jordan personally took a sledge hammer and destroyed all the obsolete equipment in the mills. From 1896 to 1915, Jordan owned the mill while friend and fellow businessman, W. C. Bradley, served on the board.

G. Gunby Jordan was recognized as one of the great friends of education, especially after the establishment of the Industrial High School, the first vocational school of the country. For over six decades, Jordan made many other momentous and influential contributions to the Columbus community. For one, George Gunby Jordan also dealt in real estate, developing the still thriving community of Green Island Hills. He also served as the president of the Columbus Board of Education and spearheaded the creation of the Secondary Industrial School—now Jordan High School. Jordan also served on the Muscogee County Commission of Roads and Revenues, where he successfully advocated paving the country’s roads.

Unfortunately, in early 1930 G. Gunby Jordan fell ill. After a long battle with pneumonia (from which he never fully recovered), Jordan died at his Green Island Ranch home May 9, 1930. Jordan’s only son, Ralph Curtis Jordan, who had grown up to marry New Jersey native Louise Mulford, survived his father in death. The pair and their four children (G. Gunby II, R. Curtis, Jr., Mulford and Louise) continued the family legacy by continuing to contribute to the Columbus community in many different aspects, including music and the arts, education, transportation and others. svm Special thanks to Historic Columbus and Katherine Waddell. 4

TRAVEL stanbul was founded around 660 BC with the name Byzantium, and it was later reestablished with the name of Constantinople, in 330 AD. Firstly, it was built in 537 AD by the Emperor Justinian as a church and it stood as the largest cathedral in the world for more than a thousand years. In 1453, it was converted by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror into a mosque. Today, the Hagia Sophia can be visited as a museum in the Turkish Republic. SULTAN AHMED MOSQUE

The mystical city of Istanbul, located on the Bosphorus Strait, is fascinating in every season. However, the spring and the fall seasons are the most recommended. This is the time when the crowds diminish and the weather is fantastic. Especially from September to November the visitors can be greeted by comfortable temperatures. In contrast, the winters in Istanbul are usually cold and rainy, while the summer temperature is very hot and highly humid, and the prices are almost twice as expensive than during the spring or the fall. Visit Istanbul in the early spring or during the fall season, you will not regret it!

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is a historic mosque in Istanbul, also known as the Blue Mosque because of the blue paint adorning the walls of its interior. It was built during the rule of Ahmed I in order to reassert Ottoman power. Its characteristics are the tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice. The Blue Mosque is still an active mosque, so it's closed to non-worshippers about half an hour during the five daily prayers. +90 212 458 4983

TOPKAPI PALACE The palace was originally built as a royal residence of the Ottoman sultans, in which they stayed from the second half of the 15th century, until the second half of the 18th century. Today, it contains significant holy relics of the Muslim world (and it stands as a museum) which contains significant collections of porcelain, robes, weapons, Ottoman miniatures, Islamic

manuscripts and many other treasures and jewelry. For instance, The Topkapi Palace conserves the fourth largest diamond of its kind in the world, the Spoonmaker's Diamond, a 86 carat (17.2 g) pearshaped diamond. +90 212 512 0480

KAPALI CARSISI BAZAAR Kapali Carsisi is the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul, an absolute must-see for the tourists of Istanbul, both because of its historical function and overall magic atmosphere. The Kapali Carsisi is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, well-stocked with an incredible variety and quality of goods on sale. The Bazaar is still able to impress tourists and transport them in the vivid atmosphere of five centuries ago, when European travelers and merchants were looking for valuable carpets, furniture, jewelery, leather, and many other precious materials. +90 212 519 1248

SUNKEN PALACE Yerebatan Sarnici, also known as Sunken Palace, is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul. It was built in the 6th century, from the days when Istanbul was Constantinople. The cistern is located 500 feet southwest of the Hagia Sophia on the historical peninsula of Sarayburnu. It is an impressive attraction, not only for its size, but also for its function – it was used to store water for the Great Palace and other buildings in the area during Justianian’s reign. +90 212 522 1259

FEATURE THE LIGHTER SIDE

ParallelLIVES We all share common threads in life. Whether it be in enjoying similar TV shows, foods, stores, or the same types of people, all of humanity is connected in one way or another. In essence, we all live through parallel lives — living, breathing and existing through subtle, but ever existent, common pulses.

MARGARET THATCHER

VS

Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, LG, OM, PC, FRS, was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and the Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990

The first person to nickname Margaret Thatcher as the “Iron Lady” was Soviet journalist Yuri Gavrilov in the Red Star army newspaper in 1976.

Margaret Thatcher was a very divisive figure in the UK, but she became a myth-shrouded icon to conservatives and was loved by more than 14 million people in her country.

In 2008 Meryl Streep played Thatcher in The Iron Lady and won her third Academy Award for the performance.

Margaret Thatcher enjoyed watching tennis and she liked listening to Bach, Chopin and Beethoven.

Thatcher became the first elected female leader of her country, and she did it in such a determined way that her sex was almost an afterthought.

Her famous quote was, “In politics, if you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”

She visited the USA many times, especially during the presidency of her close friend Ronald Reagan. She captured the imagination of people outside Britain even more than at home. One only had to witness the rapturous welcome which she received from crowds in Poland, Russia, Georgia and Armenia.

HILLARY CLINTON

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton is a former United States Secretary of State, U.S. Senator, and First Lady of the United States. From 2009 to 2013, she was the 67th Secretary of State, serving under President Barack Obama.

Michelle Obama and her trusted adviser, Valerie Jarrett, nicknamed Hillary Clinton “Hildebeest,” after the menacing and shaggy-maned gnu that roams the Serengeti.

There’s hand-wringing and finger-pointing at Simon & Schuster over the soft performance of Hillary Clinton’s Hard Choices, for which she got a $14 million advance.

Emma Watson tops the Daily News’ list to play Hillary Clinton as a young lawyer in Washington wrestling with her ambitions, and her beau, Bill, in hot Tinseltown project Rodham.

Hillary likes everything she grew up with — The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Doors. She also likes classical music because she finds it relaxing when she’s thinking about stressful things.

Hillary Clinton was the only First Lady to be subpoenaed, for her involvement with the Whitewater controversy in 1996, and to repeatedly be deposed as part of ongoing criminal and civil investigations, including Travelgate and Filegate.

Hillary once said: “The American people are tired of liars and people who pretend to be something they're not”.

Hillary Clinton surpassed Madeleine Albright’s record of countries visited; Clinton wound up seeing 112 countries in four years. She traveled almost 1 million miles and spent more about 25 percent of her time on the road (and in the air).
