EDITOR’S LETTER THE WINNING FORMULA

W

hat are you afraid of? Maybe the first thing that comes to mind is something tangible, like spiders or heights or sickness. EDITOR But I have a feeling that for most Roberto of us, our deepest fears are a bit Caligaris more subtle and require some soul-searching to uncover. The one thing you can’t be afraid of is to buy and sponsor local companies. On this issue, SVM features local companies that make our community a better place to live, shop, and dine. There are plenty of magazines out there with a similar agenda, but what makes this one different is that it is tailored just for you, the people of Columbus. Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business rather than a nationally owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers, and farms — further strengthening the economic base of the whole community. Besides, these local businesses are owned by your friends and neighbors who live in this community. They are less likely to leave and are more invested in the community’s future, just like you. I personally enjoy the services they provide. These companies often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers. And remember, each time we spend a dollar, we would do

well to weigh the full value of our choices, not merely today, but for the future of our hometown. Our interview issue is full of interesting people who are brave enough to show the world their authentic and imperfect selves, as well as their creativity and ingenuity. One of them is Paul Brown, a former Brookstone graduate now serving as Chief Executive Officer of Inspire Brands,a multi-brand restaurant company whose portfolio includes more than 4,600 Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, and R Taco locations worldwide. We also had the chance to interview Rick Spitzmiller, a Columbus architect who designs spaces according to clients’ personalities, so their homes are an exact reflection of who they are and how they like to use their interiors. SVM also included Harris III, an award-winning illusionist and featured speaker at this year's Sue Marie and Bill Turner Servant Leadership Gala at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center on October 4th. All this plus our family history section - narrated brilliantly by Jack Schley- which includes Rev. Dr. Lovick Pierce. He is remembered today for that career as the “Nestor of Southern Methodism” and the “Father of the Methodist Church in west Georgia.” Enjoy your last days of summer and thank you for your readership. Cheers,

ON THE COVER COVER

AMELLIA RUMORE What’s your can’t-live-without beauty item My can’tlive-without beauty product is blush. My favorite part is putting on blush, just having fun with it, and adding some color to your face. If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be? I would love to trade places with Julianne Hough for a week. After all the hardships in her life, she chooses to positively influence people and spread love. She lives a life that proves she has thick skin. Plus, all the places she travels wouldn’t hurt to do that for a week! What is the one food you could never give up? One food I could never give up, hands down, is cheese dip. Where is your ideal vacation destination? I would choose somewhere in the Dominican Republic! My mom is always sending me videos of beach resorts there and begging to go. Just laying in a hammock, not a worry in the world, right? Which words or phrases do you most overuse? I definitely overuse the “who’s hungry?” phrase. My friends, God bless them, I drag them everyday to come eat. Hungry or not, they’re coming! What’s your latest fashion obsession? I have to say platform shoes. I’m all for comfy, and I could wear those all day and be dressed up without breaking my ankles. Name one thing you worry about running out of: For me, is time. Time to do everything I want to in life. Which talent would you most like to have? One talent I wish I had would be being able to whistle with my fingers. It would be so much easier to get people’s attention or just scare them! How would you describe your fashion style? My style is more laid back and comfy cute. I love wearing something that allow me to do an activity and feel free. What do you think is the most important value in a relationship or friendship? The most important thing to me in a relationship is trust. I want to be able to trust someone like they can trust me. Also wouldn’t hurt to have a good friendship that you’re constantly laughing in! What do you consider your most Southern characteristics? It has to be my accent. I hear all the time how country I sound, but I’m used to it! The Waterview Lodge sales team is happy to provide you an all-inclusive event encompassing your rehearsal dinner, lodging accommodations, ceremony, reception and post-wedding brunch.

The Waterview Lodge The Waterview Lodge is located in Pine Mountain, GA. on 20 acres of manicured land with a stocked pond. With more than 10,000 square feet of indoor space, this is the place you have been looking for to have your special wedding day, family reunions, Christmas and birthday parties. Here, you can experience true comfort and a stress-free celebration at a wedding facility that is loved by all.

estled in the hills of Pine Mountain, Waterview Lodge welcomes you and your wedding guests for a truly unique wedding experience. You can capture the beauty and excitement of the day with outdoor pictures near the pond and stay the night in one of their suites or cabins. Lee Jordan, owner of Waterview Lodge, spoke to SVM about the wedding business and the advantages of this unique venue. Waterview Lodge is located in Pine Mountain. Why would you choose this place and how long have you been in business? I am a real estate agent, and I ran across this place by accident. I went out to view it for someone else and I knew it would not work for them, and when I found out the previous owners were using it as wedding venue I decided to purchase it. Pine Mountain seems to be a popular place for weddings, and this property has great potential. We have been in business for a little over two years. Either from personal or professional experience, what would you say are the most important things to look for when wedding venue shopping? To me, the most important thing to look for when venue shopping is location. There are many great venues in our area from downtown Columbus to more remote locations like ours, and a few other great ones that are close to us. Just depends on what setting you want. What do you think makes The Waterview Lodge different from other venSVM

ues? I believe what makes us different is our ability to have guests stay overnight. Talk a little bit about The Waterview Lodge and how it helps a bride and/or event planner to make that special day much easier? What we do to make the wedding day and planning it easier is access. We usually only sell whole weekend packages and let wedding parties and planners have access during the week anytime they want so they can plan. We also let wedding parties come in on Thursday to start bringing decorations and perishables. We also have the ability to let the bride and groom stay on the same property, but keep the tradition of not seeing each other because we have a separate house on the property we call the "Grooms House." The bridal suites (3) are in the main lodge and the groom and his party are in the separate house. What type of wedding styling is popular at the moment? Mainly rustic style weddings, which can be found at our venue. Do you provide Indoor and Outdoor spaces for that special celebration? Yes, we have outdoor and indoor areas. We have an outdoor ceremony area and the lodge itself is about ten thousand square feet for ceremonies and receptions. Do you provide a list of vendors that clients can choose from? At this time we have no vendor restrictions, but we do provide a list of vendors that know our venue well.SVM

NEW CAMPAIGN Thrive Senior Living has unveiled ‘Playing Favorites,’ an irreverent tongue-in-cheek initiative catered to the decision-making adult children and caregivers of the elder generation who seek a meaningful community for their loved ones.

Giovanna Rodriguez PhD – Community Relations Director, Thrive at Green Island and Marilyn Haigler – Community President, Thrive at Green Island.

THRIVE at GREEN ISLAND Thrive Senior Living designs, develops and operates innovative independent living, assisted living, and memory care communities across the country with a fresh perspective on senior living. Certified as a “Great Place to Work” by Activated Insights, Thrive strives to enrich lives and be faithful stewards of all that is entrusted to them by respecting and honoring elders as valuable members of society.

W

hat do some people think of when they see gray hair? Somesee frailty and disability with low speeds and high needs. What does Thrive at Green Island see? They see wisdom. They see laughter. They see ability. They see growth. They see potential. They see opportunity.

Thrive at Green Island, a new assisted living and memory care community in Columbus, Georgia, is part of Thrive Senior Living based in Atlanta, Georgia. Thrive Senior Living designs, develops, and operates innovative independent living, assisted living, and memory care communities across the country with a fresh perspective on senior living. “We aren’t your typical traditional senior living community." said Marilyn Haigler, Community President for Thrive at Green Island." We believe that if a community’s focus is strictly on clinical care, they just don’t care enough. At Thrive, we focus on building meaningful relationships with our residents. We have found great care to be a by-product of great relationships.” Thrive at Green Island features 48 assisted living suites and 26 memory care suites. The community is reflective of where Georgia charm meets a modern chic twist. There are soaring ceilings in the restaurant and lounge, a fitness center with highly advanced equipment, a beautiful salon and spa for pampering, suites with balconies overlooking the lovely courtyards and walking paths, and plenty of engaging and fun activities provided by the Director of Excitement. As a way to give back to the local community, Thrive also incorporated many historical points of interest in the tri-city area throughout its community including Flat Rock Park Courtyard, Dinglewood Bistro and The Springer Activity Room. When considering the type of residence that is right for you or your loved one, the following is a helpful guide:

Assisted Living

For elders who need more care than independent living can provide – but not SVM

round-the-clock medical services of a skilled nursing facility. This is a long-term option that provides assistance with the resident’s daily activities.

Memory Care

A specialized type of care designed specifically for elders living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or other forms of memory loss. Thrive also offers a unique and specialized approach for memory care. They believe in empowering their residents to make their own living choices. Residents are engaged with the goal of helping them recapture moments of memories and the recognition of loved ones. Thrive works with the resident’s family by educating them on new and productive patterns of communication with their loved one who is living with memory loss. The entire Thrive team is NIDE (National Institute of Dementia Education) certified. That includes everyone, from the chefs and housekeepers to the concierge and nurses. This allows the team to interact with their residents as unique people rather than objects in need of care. The Thrive team has dedicated their lives to ensure there is purpose in every breath of each resident they are honored to serve. They see their mission not just as caretakers, but as difference makers in the lives of those who rely on them every day. They have built a company and a team of people who align on these beliefs. Certified as a “Great Place to Work” by Activated Insights, Thrive strives to enrich lives and be faithful stewards of all that is entrusted to them by respecting and honoring Elders as valuable members of society. Stop by and meet the team. Thrive at Green Island is just off of River Road in North Columbus and is now accepting reservations. Their Grand Opening event will be held on August 23, 2018 from 5 pm – 7 pm. Please contact Hello@ThriveAtGreenIsland.com for more details. RESUME Ashley has grown to be the #1 producer in the Columbus market from 2001 to present. In 2003, she closed more than $100 million in loans and was ranked the #2 originator in Georgia by the Mortgage Bankers Association of Georgia.

ASHLEY VALENTINI Unless you are paying all cash for your next home purchase, you are going to need a mortgage or loan lender that can help you accomplish your dreams . So the question is, how do you find the best lender in your market? Ashley Valentini, who has been a mortgage lender for more than 25 years and is one of the loan officers in Columbus, finds that the best way to find a lender is simple – ask them pointed questions.

T

By MARLA CALIGARIS

he reason why you want to find the best mortgage lender possible is fairly obvious. If you’re investing in properties, then that’s your business, that’s part of your livelihood. And time is money. And wasting money on appraisals and inspections is also a waste of money. So, when you’re purchasing these properties, team up with the best mortgage lender that you can find. One hat is going to do everything they need to do to get you to that finish line. We spoke to Ashley Valentini about how she was introduced to the industry, the factors to get a loan or mortgage and her advice to someone in her field. What made you decide the mortgage industry was your calling? At a young age when I started college I needed a job and began working in a local mortgage company as a receptionist. I began learning the business, gained new responsibilities, climbed the ladder so to speak, and ultimately worked my way into loan origination. It didn’t hurt that my mother was a realtor in the business, so real estate has been in my blood and world from a very young age. Every job can be fun if you make it, what has been one of your favoritememories while working as a mortgage broker? Helping young first timers purchase their first home is the most rewarding part of the job. Why do you think Synovus is a good choice for someone looking to get a mortgage? Because no local mortgage company has more experience at all phases of the process than Synovus. We are a full service mortgage company with an extremely experienced staff: over a 111 years of combined mortgage originating experience. At Synovus your loan is handled locally from start to finish, from origination thru processing, underwriting, closing and funding all locally. Our rates and costs are extremely competitive and we have certain specialty products that differentiate us from the rest. SVM

What factors determine who gets a loan or mortgage? Minimum credit score is the first requirement. Most people think that you must have perfect credit for a mortgage. There are some programs that work with scores as low as 600. Your scores do not have to be pristine but higher scores help when pricing and quoting rates. Debt to income is the next most important factor, total monthly debt compared to monthly income must be within guidelines. Allowable debt to income ratios vary loan program to loan program, but can flex with compensating factors. What attracted you to this company and this line of business? I was recruited by Synovus. The company’s reputation and services offered made it an easy choice. You are very successful in your field. What is a piece of advice you could give someone in your field? You must be able to provide good customer service, return calls, communicate timely and meet deadlines. But sometimes you have to have the knack for providing bad news professionally but also with a plan for future qualification efforts. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time... even though in today's market there isn't much spare time. Spending time with friends and family at the lake or beach…and Auburn Football. Tripp, my oldest is a Senior at Auburn and my youngest Bailee, who is 18 will have me silently cheering for Ole Miss come the fall - of course, not when they play Auburn! Knowing that this industry can be difficult, what has been the main struggle being in the mortgage business? Regulatory requirements that impact service. We all understand the reasons that lead to more regulation but it hinders a speedy process sometimes.SVM

Gibson’s artworks are in the permanent collections of many major art museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Canada, the Nasher, the Nerman, Crystal Bridges, and the Denver Art Museum. Recent solo exhibitions include SCAD Museum of Art (Savannah and Atlanta), the National Academy Museum in New York, The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, and the Cornell Museum of Fine Art.

effrey Gibson grew up in major urban centers in the United States, Germany, Korea, England, and elsewhere. He is also a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and is half Cherokee. This unique combination of global cultural influences converge in his multi-disciplinary practice of more than a decade since the completion of his Master of Arts degree in painting at The Royal College of Art, London in 1998 and his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995.

The Denver Art Museum will mount a traveling mid-career survey in the Spring of 2018, to be followed by a smaller solo exhibition at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art in the fall of 2018. He has participated in Greater New York, Prospect New Orleans, the Everson Biennale, and Site Santa Fe. Gibson is a member of the faculty at Bard College and a past TED Foundation Fellow and Joan Mitchell Grant recipient.

As he's grown more comfortable with the "Native American artist" label, his work has grown all the more fascinating. While Gibson is Native American by heritage, he wasn't raised traditionally. This creates a magnificent tension in the work. Many of Gibson's paintings come across as powerful and striking totems, or as symbols. Gibson recognizes the inherent importance of symbols, and that being a Native American working in the contemporary art world is symbolic, as is being an openly gay Native American man. SVM

HARRY NORMAN, REALTORS®

R

SVMINTERVIEW

ick Spitzmiller of Spitzmiller and Norris, Inc. is the owner of a residential design firm specializing in the custom design of personal residences. The firm has maintained its office in Atlanta since 1985, and is experienced in designing plans for the construction of new houses, the remodeling of existing houses and the proper restoration of historic houses in a green and eco-friendly manner. In this exclusive interview with SVM, Rick shares how being from the South has influenced his work, his mentor, and what his challenges are when creating a new design. How did you first fall in love with architecture and why? From my earliest memories, I've always been intrigued by beautiful, interesting, and unusual buildings. My growing up in Columbus, Georgia, in the 1950's, predated the "progress" that has removed so many of the City's amazing houses and public buildings, so I was privileged to be inspired, in person, by some truly exceptional architecture. You were raised in Columbus and are currently living in Atlanta. How has being a Southerner influenced your architectural design style? Growing up in the Deep South meant that I seemed to be surrounded by like-minded people, people who loved their houses. This caused me to be curious about just how the houses performed: what actually worked as a result of good design, and what didn't work due to poor design. Also, even though "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," I had discerning adult friends who mentored me; who guided me in developing and shaping my sense of architectural and artistic "taste" by teaching me how to "see" a building and identify it's qualities, both good and bad.

or enlarged building MUST appear as if it has always looked the way it looks after those renovations or additions have been completed. Proper scale is integral to all good design, so the little house with the huge "room" jammed onto the back is just not successful. Not only does it not look right, it doesn’t feel right either. Renovated houses being taken where they cannot and should not go is becoming all too common.

If you had to choose one single architect who has provided a source of inspiration for you personally – who would it be and why? The one single architect who inspired me most was James Joseph Walton Biggers. Mr. Biggers was in his eighties when he hired me. He stressed the importance of seeing through drawing (which I loved) and never seemed to be without his pencil. Also, he was a fearless critic. He could dissect a building in a flash, outlining it's strengths and weaknesses; it's successes and failures, and it all made absolute sense! Improvement is the motivation for all remodels. How does your design improve a client’s experience in their home? To be successful, a remodeled

What are the greatest challenges creating a new design in an existing home? The greatest challenges in creating new designs within an existing house are making choices that respect the scale and character of the building. This doesn't have anything to do with "copying" the detailing of the existing house. Instead, successful renovations and additions are about respect for scale and creating comfortable paths of circulation within the house. Many houses that have been renovated clearly illustrate that what was done to them just didn't work! Currently kitchens are often times the most important room in the house. How do you design a kitchen for the 21st century homeowner? Kitchens are part of the architecture of a house. A successful new kitchen in an older house can make life in an old house just about perfect—but the design has to be in harmony with the scale, materials, and detailing of the house.

What is your favorite living space to design? How do you make this space stand out? I don't have a "favorite" living space in a house, although I enjoy designing a handsome library or a beautiful master suite. The entire house must be cohesive; it must work as a harmonious entity and functionally "make sense." All spaces are at their best when the house is properly sited, the materials used authentically, and the paths of circulation and room sizes happen rationally and gracefully. SVM SVM

arris III has spent the majority of his young life dazzling audiences. His classically trained performances have been featured on thousands of stages throughout the United States, and his Magic-WithA-Message has captured the spotlight in over 15 countries on 5 continents. With such a resume, it is little wonder that ‘Harris III’ is becoming one of America's most sought-after performers and event speakers. Harris spoke to SVM about what it takes to be an illusionist, some of the performers that influenced his work, and some of his most difficult acts. You will be this year’s featured guest at the Pastoral Institute 2018 Gala. For those who don’t know your background, what exactly is an illusionist? An illusionist is basically a person who performs magic tricks on stage to tell a compelling story and make them wonder. You have graced the stage at some of the largest events and conferences in the country with your unique brand of Magic-With-A-Message. Can you tell us what that means? Basically, I am a storyteller as much as an illusionist so that anytime I'm performing magic tricks I'm also presenting a message. I use illusion as a way to illustrate a universal truth and tell stories. It's not just a magic show for the sake of entertainment. The whole experience evokes wonder, is transformative for people, and includes inspiring messages which are relevant to any age group, person, or background.

their savings to help jumpstart my interests. I'm very grateful for their love. They literally gave everything they had to support me. You've done some pretty unusual illusions. What would you say was the most difficult? I tried to do something that not even Houdini himself ever attempted, which as to combine the famous straight jacket escape with the water torture cell. It's what I call the water tank escape. I had to hold my breath for about four and a half minutes which took about six months of breath training. I went probably another 6 months of trying to combine holding my breath for that length of time while getting out of the straight jacket and picking the lock to get out of the cell. It is very time consuming and hard to do!

When you first said, “I want to be an illusionist,” how did your family and friends respond? My family was very supportive right from the beginning. My parents were minimum wage workers and they would drive me around to see all the different magic shows to hound my craft. They used

Have there been any specific performers—not just magicians, but performers in general—that have influenced you? I’d say a lot of what Cirque du Soleil has done. As a storyteller, I’d say that that's what I am first and foremost. I happen to be a storyteller who happens to do magic tricks. Magic is just a medium. When people make movies or take a photograph they are using the medium of photography or the medium of film to tell a story. So at the end of the day they are all storytellers. Magic is just simply a medium that I use to tell stories through and the reason why Cirque du Soleil inspired me so much. How have advances in technology influenced your career as a magician over time, and how important is integrating advances in technology into your work? I try to stay away from incorporating a lot of technology into my work. Throughout my youth, I enjoyed reading magic history books, diaries, and journals of magicians from around the turn of the century. What you’ll find is that people reacted to their magic with awe and wonder, and there was no trying to figure out how all the secrets work. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 28 They didn't necessarily need to understand how it worked, because in 1900, people were comfortable with the mystery, and they didn't have a computer to go to and look up a youtube video which would explain how something worked. And then the birth of technology comes along and you start seeing all these things taking place around you, and there was no way someone could sit down and explain how that technology worked, you were just sort of in awe of it. Then the information age came along and now we all carry a super computer in our pockets, and what I’ve discovered is that we now have an entire generation of people who are very uncomfortable with wonder. People today are afraid to have some sort of mystery in their life. In my case I obviously have embraced technology in my personal life, but in my work as an illusionist I have stayed away from it because I think it's actually going against the very grain of how I am trying to make someone feel for that hour to an hour and a half that I have with them on stage.

I’ve discovered is that we now have an entire generation of people who

ARE VERY UNCOMFORTABLE WITH WONDER. People today are afraid to have some sort of mystery in their life.

You’ve been involved with a number of projects related to magic outside of entertainment, including work with faith ministers. What do you see as the value of magic to society, particularly beyond its ability to entertain? Magic has a huge ability to teach people and help them understand how they are tricked into believing things that they believe. We as a culture take in about four to five thousand messages a day in America. Therefore, if Americans are taking in this many messages and advertisements every single day, then there are a lot of things that are influencing the way we think, the way we see ourselves in the mirror and how we manage our lives. With time, I've discovered that even ministers who lead the churches are often easily deceived, because it is a lack of awareness of how deception works. Magic tricks are the greatest tool in the entire world that I know of that are a safe, easy, fun, entertaining way to help someone understand how they are lead astray, distracted, misdirected, lied to, tricked, or deceived. I also believe that is really important for ministers to allow you to reinvoke that childlike sense of wonder. Jesus taught in the Bible that we were to have a child like faith, but most of us don't have that because we’ve lost our sense of wonder. God created us to make us explore and try new things! aul Brown was Chief Executive Officer of Arby’s Restaurant Group, Inc.before founding Inspire. Arby’s drastic turnaround “can be attributed to Brown’s vision and leadership,” according to Fortune. As CEO, he launched several transformative initiatives across the brand’s global system with a focus on innovation, including introducing a new brand purpose, Inspiring Smiles Through Delicious Experiences®, unveiling a visionary restaurant design that increases energy efficiency, launching a team member training program that is centered on goal setting, and fostering a unique approach to product development that reinforces the brand’s We Have The Meats® marketing.

Under Brown, Arby’s global system sales surged 20% to $3.7 billion, and Arby’s U.S. system restaurants achieved average annual sales that were 22% higher than before Brown arrived. For these efforts, Brown was recognized as the "2017 Restaurant Leader of the Year" by Restaurant Business, a "2016 Golden Chain honoree" by Nation’s Restaurant News, and a "2016 Entrepreneur of the Year" in the Southeast by EY. Paul sat down with SVM to talk about his Brookstone education, the tournaround of Arby's and the changes echnology has made in the restaurant industry. You are a Brookstone graduate. How did your Brookstone education prepare you for your eventual job as the CEO of Inspire Brands? I came to Brookstone School as a Junior when my family moved to Columbus from Atlanta. I feel like I came into my own during my two years at Brookstone. The whole Brookstone community was so welcoming, and I made a lot of great friends and had the privilege to be counselled by so many supportive teachers. I consider my few years at Brookstone to be some of the most formative years in my life. You took the wheel of Arby’s at a tough moment in the brand’s history. The menu was outdated, franchisees felt disconnected from corporate, and national marketing was inconsistent. Out of all the actions you took, which ones had the greatest effect on the turnaround? One of the most important elements behind Arby’s turnaround was the establishment of the brand’s "why", its purpose: to "Inspire Smiles Through Delicious Experiences". This purpose defines the business we're in – the Experiences SVM

rby’s President Rob Lynch said that your leadership style is unique. What does leadership mean to you? It’s important for leaders to set a clear vision and get everyone aligned about where we’re going, why we’re doing this, and how we’re getting there. Then, let your team do their job. I make a habit of staying out of my team’s way. I always have their backs when they need it, but I want my team and our organization to feel empowered to be able to take the ball and run with it. This doesn’t mean that I’m not involved – it just means that I’m involved in a different way. I’ve benefited from taking a step back and listening to our franchisees, team members, and guests. Listening gives you the clarity to solve challenges and the ability to be a better advocate. How did you get individual franchisees to buy into your vision? Our franchisees have crucial insight into how we can improve our business, and as key stakeholders in our success, I want them to know their thoughts and needs are being heard. So, in those first few weeks after joining Arby’s, I went on the road to meet with franchisees. I asked plenty of questions and spent a lot of time listening to what they had to say. It’s this type of collaboration that has allowed us to be successful in our shared vision for the brand. Following our acquisition of Buffalo Wild Wings, I’ve followed a similar playbook and have enjoyed visiting franchisees across the country. Like any other industry, the food sector is facing big changes thanks in part to technology. What are some trends you think the industry is going to be seeing in the next few years? When I came into the restaurant industry five years ago, people weren’t talking much about technology. Now it’s become one of, if not the most, talked about topics. Despite this increased attention, I believe the industry is still in its infancy in areas like digital, loyalty, and data and analytics. With Inspire Brands, we’ll have the ability to make deep investments in these areas, which will improve our business performance and change the ways our brands engage with and provide value to consumers.

FOLLOWING OUR ACQUISITION OF BUFFALO WILD WINGS,

I’ve followed a similar playbook and have enjoyed visiting franchisees across the country. Arby’s CEO Paul Brown Named “Restaurant Leader of the Year” by Restaurant Business in 2017.

What’s an operating lesson you’ve learned that you often share with others? Running restaurants is more than just selling menu items; we are in the experiences business. If you create great experiences for your guests and team members, you’ll operate successful restaurants. Do you think people are becoming more sophisticated in the foods they want, especially in the USA where there is a fairly diverse food scene? Consumers are increasingly becoming more adventurous in their tastes. We’ve certainly seen this level of interest among our guests at Arby’s, and in response, the brand has found new and innovative ways to push the envelope with its menu. Arby’s product development team tests more than 1,000 potential new menu items each year, constantly innovating with new flavors, cuts, and combinations. We’re going to bring this same rigorous approach to the menus at Buffalo Wild Wings and R Taco. Both brands will continue to feature delicious wings and tacos, respectively, but we believe there will be opportunities to introduce new, flavorful menu items that excite and intrigue guests. And of course we’ve got to ask since you are in the restaurant business– what’s your favorite type of food? That’s a tough one. In our restaurants, I tend to order the Greek gyro from Arby’s and the Wild or the Desert Heat Wings from Buffalo Wild Wings. When I am not in our restaurants, I enjoy a smoked salmon appetizer and a New York strip at my favorite steakhouse in Atlanta. SVM SVM

GOAL Mollie's pottery is hand thrown on a pottery wheel, which results in every piece being inherently unique. Her ultimate goal is that each piece she makes will be enjoyed equally for use as well as for decoration.

MOLLIE JENKINS EXCLUSIVE

Ceramic artist Mollie Jenkins reminds us that the best form of art in our daily routine can be found working with clay. She loves this art form because it is a very direct process where he works with her hands and you’re sees the shapes and the forms come together in front of her.

or the last several years, former Brookstone graduate Mollie Jenkins has been focused on developing a body of work that would bridge her from college to a professional path of ceramic artistry. Her formal education allowed her the opportunity to develop strong relationships with peers and professors ultimately influencing how she approached ceramics. Despite all of the support and guidance she received from her education, nothing could have prepared her for the abundance of lessons she learns on a daily basis while running a business and a studio. Tell us a bit about how you found your way towards pottery. How did you get into it, and what were your first pieces? I first took a ceramics class at Brookstone senior year of high school, and at the time, I did not think much of it other than I really enjoyed throwing on the wheel. From there, I graduated and went off to school at the College of Charleston where I postponed declaring a major for as long as possible- at the time there was no way I knew what I “wanted to be when I grew up.” During the end of my freshman year, I decided to transfer to a school with a ceramics department. Upon deciding on Auburn that summer, I took a class back here in Columbus for wheel throwing, and from there on out, I was certain that I wanted to pursue a degree in ceramics (and potentially a livelihood). I began making bowls and mugs to start and later went onto plates, larger serving bowls, and lamps. Where did your passion for ceramics come from? My passion stems from the functionality of the finished product mixed with the creation of each product. In the start of the process, I love that I can mold a block of clay into something that later turns to stone and can be used day in and day out for years to come. SVM

PASSION Mollie loves that she can mold a block of clay into something that later turns to stone and can be used day in and day out for years to come.

W

hat is the process for making your ceramics? All individuals have varying steps to their respective ceramics process. For my work, I start with a block of brown clay, put it on the potter’s wheel and throw it into the desired form using the force of my hands and water. For all items except for lamps, I cover them to dry for a day or two. From there, I revisit each item, wire it off of the throwing surface, and then put it back on the potters wheel to trim the bottom. Trimming is just to clean up the bottom while creating a foot, where the vessel rests on the table. If the item requires a handle, at this stage I pull a handle from an oblong piece of clay. The handle will then dry for a few hours and be shaped again, then the handle is attached to the vessel and they slowly dry together. From here each item is fired in the kiln for about a day, then the glaze color is applied, and once dried, the piece is fired for the second and final firing.

SOCIAL MEDIA at this point in my career is crucial. It is an IRREPLACIBLE WAY to advertise MY PRODUCT and reach customers who otherwise I would have GREAT DIFFICULTY reaching at this stage.

Was there a point in your career that you made a decision to sell your ceramics for a living? Could you describe how you came to that decision? For me, I kind of grew into the selling of my work. In school at Auburn, I participated in a few shows where my family was nice enough to come over to purchase my work. I was so amazed after that first show that anyone would want one of my creations. Thank goodness. Now, strangers are buying my work too.

How important is social media to you? Do you think it’s going to be a big part of how you sell your products? Social media at this point in my career is crucial. It is an irreplacible way to advertise my product and reach customers who, otherwise, I would have great difficulty reaching at this stage. It also allows those who are interested in the process or the behind the scenes of ceramics to get to know me and what goes into my work. I think it is crucial for folks to be able to see that more goes into these products than the mass produced items they are used to.

What, in particular, do you want your finished projects to express? As mentioned above, everyday use. I have folks who will let me know that the mug they have of mine is their favorite and they use it everyday. For me, there is no greater compliment that someone would want to spend their day with an item I have created. What current trends are you seeing in ceramics? A lot of people working with ceramics are going for a more minimal look, as that tends to be an ongoing fad these days. This includes fewer or no handles and white everything. I prefer the speckled nature of my clay and the variation of my glazes too much to go this route anytime soon.

Most ceramics off the shelves are made from smooth clay or delicate porcelain. What material do you prefer to use? I love using the brown clay which most of my wares are made of. This clay has some grog (sandy material in it) which allows me to be able to shape it on the wheel as needed. This clay also finishes to a warm tan with speckles in it, which I love.

What kind of environment do you like working in? In the studio, I have music going all day, or I like to listen to podcasts, but right now music is my go-to. If it is nice out, I will have my garage door open. I prefer a relaxed work environment so I don’t get too stressed day in and day out with all of the todo’s of running a small business. SVM

What attribute do you feel best characterizes an excellent piece of pottery? Functionality. For me pottery should be functional to the point of being able to use it everyday s well as growing to love it throughout the use of the item. SVM

BLENDERS' MASH Crown Royal Blenders’ Mash, is the first expression in a new lineup known as the Blenders’ Series. Highlighting one of the five whiskies that make up the Crown Royal Deluxe blend, it is an amber colored offering available now. By MARLA CALIGARIS

N

ew for 2018, Crown Royal Blenders’ Mash showcases one of the components that go into Canada’s best selling whisky, Crown Royal DeLuxe. Mark Balkenende is one of several people who make up the Crown Royal blending team, and it was Mark who took the lead in creating this approachable, vanillarich whisky. With a team of blenders rather than a single master blender for Crown Royal, each member can focus on just a few whiskies. This is one of the keys to Crown Royal’s unwavering batch consistency. This new whisky is as eminently approachable as it is smooth, creamy, and richly flavourful without being aggressive. New drinkers will love it, and Crown Royal die-hards will relish it as an amped-up Crown Royal DeLuxe. The woody vanilla notes that are the fingerprints of Crown Royal are right out front. This is not bourbon, but for someone who likes the idea of bourbon but can’t get past the bite, here is your whisky. NOSE: High esters, vanilla, hints of clean wood, fruits and flowers, green apples, cereal tones. Overtones of bourbon. PALATE: Creamy corn-laced with vanilla. Bourbonish with nutty and cereal notes. Round, sweet, luscious, and approachable. Peppery spices that are mild at first becoming hotter at the finish. The palate maintains a consistent creamy mouthfeel. Gradually increasing oak tannins add structure while hints of charcoal bring us back to not-quite bourbon. The finish is exceptionally long with sweet corn, vanilla and tingling hot spiciness. Crown Royal Blenders' Mash is a Diageo product and is distributed in Georgia by Georgia Crown Distributing Co.SVM

hen Lonnie and Merett Alexander first saw their future home on Hilton Avenue, they were not entirely sure that the house was right for them. But a spark of vision, centered around creating memories and family lifestyle, coupled with a little help from some talented renovators, brought new life into the place, turning a ‘house’ into a ‘home.’ “I have always loved this house,” Merett reminisced. “When it came on the market I thought about it, but the timing wasn’t right.” Merett later returned to the property with architect Jack Jenkins, who would help her see the potential of the property, and bring her and Lonnie’s vision to light. “Jack and I saw what the house could be. It has such wonderful bones and structure,” Merett said about her return. “I brought Lonnie back the next day, and we made an offer.” TOP AND RIGHT: With colorful chairs, pillows, and

artwork, this room is a bright and cheery space to entertain. The art above the sofa is by the an artist named Lynn Sanders and makes a big statement. Previously one large room, the foyer was added to create a designated entry and also to make room for the newly added staircase. The curvature of the staircase was the homeowner’s idea and allowed for better configuration of the space. The front door was moved to be centered with the house and replaced with double doors that now makes for a grand entrance. The fireplace was removed for better reconfiguration of the space and a mocha velvet high back sofa was put in its place. The designer suggested the colorful Persian rug and told the homeowner that it was a must have and it definitely was! SVM

The overdyed blue oriental rug adds a pop of color yet still keeps with the traditional feel. The foyer entry to the dining room was shifted to allow for the staircase. The large table and cane backed chairs are from Scotts Antiques in Atlanta and were refinished by Wade White, and the two hostess chairs are covered in a contemporary wood grain fabric done by Leslie Wolfe.

erett, acting as the head contractor of the project, collaborated with a talented team of individuals to plan and complete a comprehensive renovation. On her team were architect Jack Jenkins, consultant Hal Averett, woodworker Rick Brettle, and Leslie Wolfe with Benton Parker Design along with their design associates Lindsay Higgins and Lindsay Slice. “There are just so many things that we did to this house,” Merett said about the renovations. “This project was my pride and joy.” Mixing a blend of modernism while still maintaining rustic feel and history of the home, the team accomplished a laundry list of projects. “We moved the laundry room from the backdoor closer to our bedroom turning that area into a bar, we completely opened up the upstairs area and redesigned the floor plan creating two bedrooms, we combined two downstairs bedrooms to create a master bedroom with a master bathroom, and we repurposed the old master closet and half-bath into a new laundry room.” Built in 1964 by the Trussells, the home has been renovated several times by different owners, and Lonnie and Merett have done the largest renovation to date. “We have three girls, and the renovations were able to suit our family’s needs and lifestyle,” Merett said. “We changed the inside, but we left the exterior of the house the same.” The comments that they get is everyone loves the openness of the lot and its original charm. The built-ins add a great place to put books and dÊcor to this old world office. The painting above the fireplace is done by Bucky Bowles before the homeowner’s father passed away and has great meaning for them. It is of Lonnie and his father hunting. Bucky specializes in sporting art, primarily bird hunting and fly-fishing, is his passion he paints oils and watercolors of other subject matter ranging from marsh and low country landscapes to dogs and waterscapes. BREAKFAST ROOM: The bay window allows lots of natural light to flood through the eat in kitchen and also creates a perfect spot for a breakfast table. FAMILY ROOM: The family room is the heart of the house. A staircase formerly separated this room and the kitchen, but was removed for better flow. Built-ins were taken out to simplify the space and the ornate fireplace surround was used from the one taken out of the living room. In the seventies, this room was used to be what was called a “Florida room” and had shells, Florida décor, and skylights. Those have since been removed, and now the space has a large sisal rug layered with a cow hide and a comfy blue sofa. Neutral tones are offset with bright colored artwork throughout the room. The homeowners have some great colorful pieces of art in this home; Penley, Erin Gregory, Cheryl Connolly, and Laura Park are just some of the talented artists. DAUGHTER'S ROOM: Neutral tones in this young girl’s bedroom keep a calm relaxing feeling without being boring. The French style furniture, like the upholstered tufted headboard, and the antique dresser add detail and character to the room. The modern side tables add storage and still keep with the French style. The crisp, white coverlet makes the space feel bright and airy against the pale grey walls and beige bed. The geometrically patterned wool rug is the perfect base to layer the linens and furniture on in this bedroom. With all of the windows in this room, plantation shutters from Frazier Blinds and Shutters were a perfect addition to add functionality and character to the space.

PETS spotlight PETS

Pets play an important role in many people’s lives. In addition to seeing-eye dogs and dogs that can be trained to detect seizures, animals can also be used in occupational therapy, speech therapy, or physical rehabilitation to help patients recover. Aside from these designated therapeutic roles, animals are also valued as companions, and can certainly affect the quality of our lives.

BETSY LEEBERN Brandy, Scotch, And Cody

What is your pet’s name? The two Boykin Spaniels are Brandy and Scotch. Cody is my rescue dog. I used to have Bourbon who was also a Boykin Spaniel. How did you come up with the names? Does it have any specific significance? When Bourbon was still alive, my daughter Gantt said “ He’s the color of Bourbon.” The other two names for the other Boykins just followed. For the rescue dog, I was lying in bed watching the Braves on TV, saying names outload. When I said Cody, his ears immediately perked up. How old is your pet? The Boykin Spaniels are nine and Cody is around five. What is your pet's’ favorite food? My dogs eat Blue Buffalo, the wilderness flavor, but would sell their souls for cooked chicken. They also get a Beggin’ Strips skinny bacon when they behave. Twice a day I give them two small milk bones which help clean their teeths.

I love to take walks in the woods with them. I have trails all behind my house, and they can be taken off their leashes. What is the best thing about your pets? They give me unconditional love. They love me no matter what I do! What is the funniest memory involving your pets? When Cody first rode in a plane with me ,we went to Colorado. He was so small I was able to put him in my purse and go to the grocery store. Brandy and Scotch love to hunt armadillos. It is so funny to watch them. How would you describe your pets in 3 words: They are loveable, snuggly, and hilarious! Do you have other pets? Yes, I now have five cats. I started out with twelve. Are you involved with any charities involving animals? Yes. I’m on the Paws Humane Society advisory board, and I love what they do for the community. Paws has a program where they trap, neuter, and vaccinate feral cats and then release them back into the wild. Who is your veterinarian? The vet I use is Northside Animal Hospital. I also use a groomer, Samantha with Personal Paws Mobile Pet Grooming. She comes to my home and grooms them in her van. Very convenient for all of us! SVM

COLUMBUS HERITAGE Every city in the world has a beginning. Those that have survived the tests of time were only able to do so by people that saw promise and endless potential in the city, and the people, itself.

EDUCATION Lovick studied medicine in Philadelphia, practiced medicine and preached the gospel in Greensborough, Ga., for several years, before devoting himself to the ministry altogether.

The second St. Paul Methodist Church building on the corner of 13th Street and 3rd Avenue.

James Henry Rev. Dr. Lovick Pierce 1785- 1879 Bickerstaff 1844-1906

REV. DR. LOVICK PIERCE

The State of Georgia has played host to the Methodist denomination of the Protestant Church since the State’s beginning when the church founders, brothers John and Charles Wesley, arrived here from England in 1736 to spread Christianity through the southern frontier. In a manner of speaking, the church and the Colony of Georgia were born at the same time, and the two have made their mark on each other. The City of Columbus has not escaped this relationship; in fact, Columbus has contributed greatly to its development. One such contribution was in the form of the Reverend Dr. Lovick Pierce.

T

By Jack Schley hough not originally from Columbus, Rev. Dr. Lovick Pierce made his home here and based a substantial portion of his career from here, also. Born in North Carolina in 1785, Lovick Pierce was said to have come from a “poor and obsolete” background. He was taken by his parents to Barnwell district, S.C., where his school training was limited, amounting to about six months' attendance at an "old field school." There, he learned to read the only book available to him: the Bible. At the age of 20 he began a 75 year career in the Methodist Church which was truly “life-long.” He is remembered today for that career as the “Nestor of Southern Methodism” and the “Father of the Methodist Church in west Georgia.” Lovick Pierce married Miss Ann Foster in 1810, daughter of the Hon. George Wells Foster, attorney-at-law, and served his first post as a Chaplain to the U.S. Army out of Milledgeville, Georgia, during the War of 1812. Following his service, he entered the study of medicine, all the while preaching to small congregations. As a child, Lovick Pierce was said to have been timid and sensitive but gifted with a natural eloquence and the ability to easily enter the hearts of his acquaintances. Formally, he was addressed simply as “Dr. Pierce” but to his intimate friends and family he was affectionately called “Lovie.” SVM

H

aving attended the creation of the Georgia Conference of the Methodist Church in Macon in 1831, Dr. Pierce began what was then one of the more hazardous callings of the time. The life of a frontier preacher in the early 1800s was not one of physical comfort or routine; rather, one of constant motion, poverty wages, and exposure to the elements. The pastor went where his work was most needed. On horseback, he rode alone through swamps and dense forests circulating through a wide range of towns and frontier settlements. At night, he often slept on the floor of a stranger’s cabin when shown hospitality. In his saddlebags he carried only his Bible, a hymnal, and spare shirt. Riding this wide circuit eventually landed Dr. Pierce in Columbus in 1836 to serve his first official appointment as the pastor of St. Luke Methodist Church.

The First St. Paul Church in Columbus, built 1859 with L. Pierce as first pastor. The church was destroyed by lightening in 1901.

Upon arriving to the western most outpost of the State of Georgia, Dr. Pierce found that the St. Luke congregation worshiped in the only brick Methodist church in the state at that time. It sat on an overgrown lot in the middle of a riverbank expanse that was taking the form of a town - the frontier beginning of Columbus. It was here that Dr. Pierce settled his family and set about becoming an industrious citizen. He set in motion to expand the existing house of worship at St. Luke. With his own hands, he helped clear the underbrush out of the city lot and planted elms trees to shade the church yard.

Dr. Pierce was ABLE TO BUILD a four room house IN 1838 in the prominent suburb of WYNNTON ON THE HILL overlooking downtown.

To supplement his income, Dr. Pierce invested in a commercial dray business in Columbus, operating hired carts drawn by oxen to haul merchant goods and lumber about town. He quickly developed a reputation as a good business man and an admired preacher. The investment paid off as Dr. Pierce was able to build a four room house in 1838 in the prominent suburb of Wynnton on the hill overlooking downtown. This home was later enlarged by Mr. William W. Garrard in 1855 and became known as “Hilton.” It stood on the wooded lot where current day Hilton Avenue runs into Wynnton Road. Dr. Pierce continued to ride through the outlying settlements around Columbus. He facilitated the founding and dedication of many Methodist churches in the Chattahoochee Valley, officiated weddings, baptized children, often preached in revival settings outdoors, a SVM

and administered to the wider organization of the Methodist Church. He served as a founding trustee of Emory College, which later became Emory University in Atlanta, and was an agent for the Georgia Female College in Macon, which exists today as Wesleyan College. He was moved from the pulpit at St. Luke in Columbus for two years but returned in 1840 when the church’s membership declined. When he arrived, the membership was listed at 378 members and by the end of 1841 it had grown to 739. Dr. Pierce was influential in the creation of the distinct Southern Methodist Church in 1844 and was appointed as the Presiding Elder over the Columbus District in 1849. While serving as St. Luke’s pastor again in 1850, his son James L. Pierce was given charge of St. Luke’s Factory Mission in Columbus which was established to minister to the workers of the cotton mills along the river.

The second St. Luke Church was built in 1846 replacing the 1831 structure, which was the first brick Methodist church in Georgia.

P

erhaps Dr. Pierce’s greatest contribution to the Methodist Church was his son, George Foster Pierce. George Pierce served the Methodist Church alongside his father filling many of the same positions until his own eloquence and capabilities raised him to a superior rank than that of his father. George Pierce served as pastor to St. Luke in Columbus for a year in 1847 before being appointed the presidency at Emory College where he remained until 1854. That year, Lovick Pierce was influential in getting the General Conference of the Georgia Methodist Church to meet in Columbus. George Pierce returned to Columbus for the conference and was ordained as a Bishop. It was in filling this role that it was said of George F. Pierce, “No man in the Methodist Church in the south, rose to greater heights or was more admired than Bishop Pierce.” It was through his and his father’s work that Columbus became a seat of the Methodist Church in Georgia in the mid nineteenth century. In fact, this time is known as the Great Revival, centering on the year 1858, CHILDREN in which the spiritual influence of the Methodist Church Dr. Pierce and his wife was casting a wide net. Membership at St. Luke rose to such had ten children: Rev heights that Dr. Lovick Pierce called for the founding of the George Foster Pierce, second Methodist Church in Columbus because St. Luke ran Julia Elizabeth, Ann out of seats. He even supplied the new church with its name. America, Mary Flournoy, Caroline Matilda, Thomas St. Paul Methodist Church was dedicated by Lovick Pierce Flournoy, Hamilton Reddick, Clara Columbia, on October 9, 1859, and he himself filled the role as the Ella Virginia and Lovick. church’s first pastor. The new sanctuary was built on the corner of what is now Thirteenth Street and Third Avenue in downtown. Under Dr. Pierce’s direction, a new policy distinguished St. Paul from St. Luke in that men and women would sit together in the pews. This new policy was not without opposition and some of the men were less than accommodating by refusing to abstain from spitting their tobacco on the floor by the ladies’ shoes. Between father and son, Bishop Pierce was unmatched in eloquence of speech by any other Methodist preacher in his time. However, his father Lovick was the more effective and moving speaker of the two. They often traveled together when attending to their ministries across the state. In 1874, Dr. Pierce attended the Georgia Conference meeting of the Methodist Church with his son, the Bishop, and his grandson, all serving as delegates. A friend of these Reverend Pierces once said of them that they had, “… a genius for loving.” They had a natural ability to use their words, their actions, and their faith in God to make others feel loved as important pieces in a greater plan. It was in 1879, while Bishop George Pierce was traveling a new circuit of the church in the western territories beyond Texas that he received a telegram from his father, “Tell the Brethren I am lying just outside the gates of Heaven.” The Reverend Dr. Lovick Pierce died in Sparta, Georgia, at the age of 95. His body was returned to Columbus and buried in Linwood Cemetery next to his wife. It is here in Columbus that many of the legacies of his 75 years in ministry through the Methodist Church continue to impact the spiritual lives of generations well beyond his own through the flourishing local institutions he founded and ran with a “genius for loving.” SVM SVM

Frances Malone and Lucile Flournoy wanted to create a space where customers could receive personalized service while also being inspired by the beautiful art that fills the walls. They recently celebrated their twentieth anniversary of serving MidTown. Two Sisters Gallery features a colorful array of original fine art, including regional and local artists whose works represent a variety of artistic mediums including oil pastel, acrylic, oil, and watercolor. They also provide custom picture framing, beautiful lines of ceramics and jewelry. Stop by their 13th street location that oozes with quirky southern charm and let them help you decorate your space. Buying original art is more than buying a décor item for your home. When you buy artwork you are buying the story of the artist, the story behind the creation of the artwork and you are adding to your own story. The store is open Monday - Friday: 10am to 5:30pm and Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

CHANCELLOR'S A man named Alexander Claringdon Chancellor once lived in a large mansion at a crossroads in Virginia known as Chancellorsville. On May 1st 1863, Chancellorsville was home to the second bloodiest battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Chancellorsville. Shortly after, Chancellor's home was used as a hospital and later burned to the ground by the Union Army. Chancellor, with no money to his name, then rode south to Columbus, Georgia to start anew. Chancellor started working at Thornton and Acee, a dry goods store, which he later bought interest in. The store underwent many alterations and operated under several titles, first being Chancellor and Pearce, then the A.C. Chancellor Company, and finally in 1931, Chancellor's. Chancellor's was bought by Roger Stinson in 2007, who has not deviated far from A.C. Chancellor's 19th century vision for the store. Chancellor’s offers quality, traditional gentlemen's tailoring, knitwear and shirts available in a wide range of sizes and styles as well as an extensive range of menswear accessories and shoes. The secret of Chancellor’s lies in providing their customers with quality clothing and guiding them to establish a wardrobe uncompromised in its quality in both fabric and design. CONCIERGE MEDICINE OF COLUMBUS Dr. Moore is a board-certified family medicine practitioner here in Columbus. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and completed her residency at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, South Carolina. She recently transitioned my practice from a traditional model to a membership model. With this type of healthcare model, she is able to provide office visits that are less hurried, same or next day appointments that start on time, increased communication, more direct connection and support for your diet, nutrition, fitness, and other healthcare goals. Concierge medicine or membership-based medicine focuses on the patient, not the clock. In this type of practice, a patient pays an annual fee which ensures more facetime with the doctor, 24/7 access directly to the physician via phone or text, a personalized healthcare plan, and support. Dr. Moore believes this model is very beneficial for patients because they found a way through the concierge practice that, by seeing only eight to ten patients a day, there is plenty of time to take care of the paperwork and to contact your specialist and keeping up with everything that is going on with them. The benefit of membership is that appointment times are 30 minutes, we run on time, and you can almost always get in and see me the same day!

DINGLEWOOD PHARMACY In an era dominated by CVS, Walgreen’s and Rite-Aid, it’s increasingly rare to find a locally-owned, mom-and-pop style pharmacy. But this year marks the 100th anniversary of Dinglewood Pharmacy: an independently-owned, Columbus establishment where owner Terry Hurley says "customers are treated like family." This year Dinglewood will be a century old pharmacy. The business has been successful because, through the different owners, Dinglewood has always considered itself to be a part of the community. Today, Dinglewood is serving 5th and 6th generation families at the pharmacy and on the soda fountain. It is a proud day when a family brings their children in for his or her first scrambled dog. During the depression and world wars, the franks were split length-wise to conserve meat. A “half-a-dog” and a coke was 6 cents. The “scrambled Dog” was first served by Mr. Firm Roberts on Benning Rd in the late 40s for a short time. When Mr. Roberts business closed, Sport Brown put his touch on the prep and continued using the name. Dinglewood Pharmacy hry their best to serve and to serve well, but they do their absolute best to give back as well. Like any other small business, you had to enrich that which enriches you. Their customers have always been first priority, treated as friends and neighbors.
