W EDITOR Roberto Caligaris

elcome to the summer of 2019, to the season of warmth and renewal, to the time of year when outdoor events abound, when relaxation is in the air and when nature provides a full array of adventure and discovery, of beauty and peacefulness.

One of those outdoor events you should considering doing this year is gardening. Residents of large cities like New York and Philadelphia often depend on public botanical gardens to immerse themselves in nature. Many of these residents do what they can to include a garden even in their rooftops. Here in Columbus, we are lucky to have amazing private gardens throughout the city. We have the space and the creativity of people to do it. Since we live in a world that is going a million miles a minute and with everything constantly “on” in the background and electric lights telling our bodies it is day time all the time, it can be hard to even keep track of the days of the week. When you commit to being a gardener, you commit to being aware of what is around you in the real world. Suddenly you notice where the sun is and when. You start to see the subtle differences in soil, and actually appreciate that a wriggly worm is actually your garden helper. If you are like many gardeners, you will probably start to see that greater sense of awareness spill into other areas of your life. Your kids smiles start to mean more as you become more aware of the passing of a year. Rain and sunshine have their own special joy. You can take time to smell the roses.

We will try to include more of them in the near future since is a subject that many of our readers requested in the past. At SVM we believe that gardening does not have to become a second full time job. Start little, and you will want to keep expanding each year as you experience all the joys of having your own garden. Even if you have limited space, you can start an indoor container garden. Or if that is still too much, then try sprouting an herb garden to get your growing efforts going. Resolve that you will start somewhere, because there are just so many things you will be missing out on if you don’t! Summer months for us here at SVM are of renewal and fresh editorials. On this issue we welcome Julian Plowden. He is a Columbus resident that practices Architectural photography and photojournalism blending them into romantic photo scenes. Julian describes the feeling of taking a photograph as “forever in the moment” nodding to the movie-like scenes which he has experienced. Drawing and drafting in architecture heavily influenced his work and he feels like photography is a game of “Quick Draw” where he has a minute, maybe even seconds, to spot and capture a masterpiece. And don’t miss all the great events that we covered the last few weeks, such as the Columbus Dancing Stars, Spring on the Green, CSU’s Spring Swing and the 2019 Heritage Ball at the Wynn House. Welcome to summer. Take a hike, go jump in a lake, listen to an outdoor concert and enjoy reading SVM in your beautiful garden. Cheers!

In this issue we feature some of the most beautiful gardens in Columbus.

inding a dental practice specializing in pediatrics is not an easy task, but Dr. Caroline Jarrell and her entire team go above and beyond to provide high-quality dentistry and individualized care with a personal touch. Dr. Jarrell spoke to SVM about when she decided to go to the pediatric dentistry field, regular check-ups and her favorite part about running her business.

When did you decide to become a pediatric dentist? I always knew that I wanted to be in healthcare but didn’t decide on becoming a dentist until college. I spent a summer shadowing several different dentists and really fell in love with the idea of being a pediatric dentist. Children can be so much fun to work with, and I love getting to see patients mature and really come into their own!

A good rule of thumb to follow is that a child can brush his or her own teeth when they are coordinated enough to tie their own shoes. TREVIOLI ITALIAN KITCHEN Trevor Morris focuses on simple, quality ingredients and traditional preparation methods. This simplicity and Trevor’s great care for his craft are what set Trevioli Italian Kitchen apart from other Italian restaurants in Columbus. By R. CALIGARIS

T

revioli’s location in Blackmon Road makes it a popular neighborhood hangout. The contented crowd remains at the bar as happy hour blends into dinner time. They may stay for a while and perhaps order a portobello ravioli to share, or ask for a table and settle in for a full meal. There seems to be no hurry to move on from this warm, mellow spot.

This month we sat down with Chef Trevor Morris to talk all things pasta. We found out where Trevioli got its start, what it’s like to be an Italian restaurant owner, and which are the most popular pasta dishes you can find at Trevioli. Can you tell us how Trevioli got its start? Trevioli started in a storage unit off of Veterans Parkway in 2013. For the first 6 to 9 months we were a pasta shop. Which means getting approved by the Department of Agricul-

ture. We started our own business because we were tired of working and supporting the corporate life. We wanted to create a business that appreciated their employees and helped make Columbus a better place to live. How did Trevioli get its name? Trevioli is a combination of Trevor and ravioli. I thought it was dumb at first, but my brother who is an online marketing guru, said google it, and nothing came up. "You’ll be the only trevioli on the internet" he said. So we went with it. Tell us about how you got started in the restaurant industry? I started in the restaurant business 20 years ago, in a corporate restaurant outside of Chicago, called Max & Ermas. I didn’t realize then, but you have to be a special type of person to survive in the restaurant world. I have tried to get out several times, but it’s like this is what I’m supposed to do. I’m not good at anything else .

hat are your most popular pasta dishes and why do you think they’re so highly regarded? Tortellini and portobello ravioli will likely always remain on the menu. We slow roast the mushrooms, use the best ricotta and Parmesan, and roll the pasta out and hand make them. The gnocchi is seasonal, and we always try to pair with something local. The chicken Alfredo and spaghetti I know I can’t take off the menu without getting in trouble. What’s the single most important thing about pasta cookery? The single most important thing about when cooking pasta is salt. Salt your pasta water like the ocean. When it’s time to pull it from the water, reserve some for sauce, dump the pasta and oil it hot, spread it out to cool. Don’t put oil in your water, don’t dump it into ice water, and if you do rinse it, get it out of the water quickly. Trust me. What attracted you to open your new location in North Columbus? When my business partner, Sanjay, said I have a building for the new location, he took me over there and we walked in. It was a roof with dirt floors. I said, “ Cool, what’s it going to look like?” He said “ Here's a piece of paper, draw the new Trevioli and give it to the contractors.” It was one of the most amazing moments of my life. Italian cuisine is still so popular in Columbus and around the country. Do you think diners’ attitudes and expectations have changed over the years? There are tons of articles written about the changes in the restaurant business. From the style of food to the complimentary service. Look at the

farm to table initiative. While it’s a great idea in theory, 100% farm to table is just not possible. There aren’t any salt farms around here. So if you plan on having any seasoning added to your dinner, it will come from somewhere else. That doesn’t mean don’t try. As 2018 was a complete blur in retrospect, somehow my wife and I acquired 3 acres in Harris county. I’m no farmer, but you bet I’m gonna try. Also, expectations have changed. Try to survive in the restaurant business with no social media platform, no website, without some sort of delivery service, vegan options, gluten free, free WiFi, space for pets, eco friendly straw options, and sustainable farming and fishing is just not possible. What are you most proud of as a business owner of Trevioli Italian Kitchen? For me it is not the food. It’s not the great reviews. It’s the community service that we have put forth over the years. We have opened up and donated to the less fortunate, collected shoes, donated to your kids baseball, dance, football teams. Mark Jones day. Discounts for administrators and their assistants, the military, the police. We work with the second chance networks and give jobs to people who have felonies and can’t get jobs elsewhere. We teach students what this industry is about. My favorite ones are the ones that aren’t broadcasted. The ones where someone calls and says, hey, we have a small church can you donate something? And we feed 50 people on a Sunday and after that Sunday it’s forgotten and not talked about because that one was between Trevioli and God. While we can’t donate to everyone, we certainly do try. Trevioli in some ways is a 501c3 disguised as a restaurant. SVM

THE WYNN HOUSE: The Wynn House was built in the late 1830’s for Colonel William L. Wynn, one of Columbus’s earliest and most prominent residents. In 1852 the property was sold to Henry Hurt and he sold the house to Colonel Hines Holt in 1855. In 1906, J. Thomas Cooper purchased the house and, using mule power, moved the structure forward three hundred feet to the crest of the hill so that the land surrounding the house could be subdivided. Mr. and Mrs. Stephen C. Butler bought the home in 1932, completely restored the property, and further enhanced the residence. James W. Woodruff bought the Butler home in 1958 and the historic mansion became the site of the Christian Fellowship Association and in 1974 became known as The Wynn House.

n Midtown Columbus, Alice Wade has created an intimate and serene garden scape that is only a few steps away from her family’s sunroom. The backyard is adorned with lush trees and shrubbery, creating a secluded oasis away from the bustling suburban streets outside. The Wade’s purchased their home thirteen years ago, and Alice’s love for gardening has shaped the landscape ever since. She credits her affinity for the outdoors and gardening to her parents, Peggy and Ralph, from Pine Mountain, GA. To help maintain their vision of a well-kept private garden, the Wade’s rely on Nickerson’s Lawn Service to hedge and mow the yard. Alice's garden was designed to create an intimate and shaded space without a lot of maintenance.

The contractor responsible for this work was the renowned Alan Greshan, owner of Aqua Creations. The life of the garden, and Alice’s favorite aspect, is the wide variety of plant life. he Peek’s magnificent home is surrounded by Georgia forest, creating a sense of seclusion and privacy. When approaching the side of the house you are greeted with a charming stone path, leading to an extensive and wellmanaged garden. Rachael Peek’s vast, diversified backyard is an exception to the old adage that ‘less is more’. The Peek’s sprawling seventeen acres property in Fortson County, features a sizable garden. The focal point being, an extensive sleek swimming pool. The Peek’s began renovations to the property in 2014 by developing the landscape and adding fountain features to the original pool. Rachael praises the work of Aquarius Pool, saying their knowledge and expertise in the contracting field allowed for their vision to seamlessly come to life. The landscape designer, Eric Jarvits, and actual landscaper, Pete Page, were held with the task of leveling the land into three different “rooms”. Their work adds dimension to vast property, creating an accessible uniformity within in the backyard. Aspects and history of Columbus are truly instilled within the garden. This can be seen in the covered porch, which was created with recovered wood from the Chattahoochee River, and was built by Tim Gregory of Columbus. The Peek’s spend their down time lounging on their porch while their King Charles Cavalier, Kate, chases butterflies throughout the flowers. They enjoy hearing the lull of the fountain, and overlooking the serene pool. Encapsulated by black-iron fencing by Aaron Land, the Peek’s have successfully created a grand landscape that still maintains a sense of intimacy and tranquility. SVM soviewsmag.com

arbara began renovations to the landscape and garden around five years ago with the help of Chris Harman of Wildflower Gardens. The team worked together to create Barbara’s vision of an intimate garden space, tucked behind the home’s bold white brick and luscious greenery.

The garden is laced with classical elements reminiscent of formalized French gardens. Uniformed boxwood hedges line the perimeter of the backyard, accented by well-manicured topiaries in vibrant terra cotta pots. A beautifully rustic wall lines the back of the home, adorned by a lionhead fountain, that creates a soothing hum of running water for lounging guests. The focal point of the garden is the grand pool which features a pebble tec bottom, surrounded by blue stone. The pool, which was original to the home, underwent renovations courtesy of Columbus’ Pools by Design. The vivacious plant-life that ornaments the property is the result of Barbara’s labors. She speaks of her passion of gardening and observing the physical growth of the different plants throughout the season. Other than gardening, she spends time in the quite-walled area to relax and unwind. Barbara and her friend John enjoy lounging by the pool with music and a glass of wine. The royal scenery of the garden surrounds and relaxes its sitters, creating a sense of opulence and serenity in the heart of Columbus. SVM

hen winding down the Malloy’s secluded, tree-lined driveway, you get the feeling that you are driving down a mountain road in Highlands, NC. Off of Old River Rd., in the Woodbridge Community, Melissa and Frank Malloy have created a breathtakingly picturesque residence set on eleven acres of lushly wooded, private land. When the couple married almost three years ago, they sought to curate a home with their personal influences, tastes, and familial history in mind. The two shared a love for the serenity and retirement of the outdoors, and began combining their visions to custombuild the house of their dreams. The home, which was recently completed in early Spring of 2019, boasts five bedrooms (all featuring full baths) and two powder bathrooms. Nestled in the back, is a cool and private outdoor space fit with a lounging area, grill, and sunny pool. The impressive residence sits atop a grassy hill and carries an air of grandeur, yet seamlessly blends with its bucolic surroundings and the creek below. The design process began with a request for a home that reflected European flare and featured an attractive outdoor living space. Melissa and Frank worked with custom builder Ray Brinegar and architect Jeff Ribnik (of Earth Wood Studio) to locate the property and begin the construction of their dream home. In addition, they collaborated with Laura Burbrink, of Laura Burbrink Designs, to select the exterior and interior finishes. The creative process allowed the couple to explore and hone in on their own personal architectural and interior aesthetics. Frank’s stylistic approach derived from his affinity for industrial/rustic components, while Melissa’s taste is centered towards a more refined, transitional look. The result is a elegant amalgamation of the two styles, which can be seen throughout the

home in elements such as the exposed beams and neutral, airy palette. The couple says they were careful to maintain the balance of the two modes by blending textures, finishes, clean-line metal pieces, and traditional stained pieces. They chose to keep formal areas of the home traditional, including the dining room, powder room, master bedroom/bathroom, while incorporating a more casual rustic presence in the great room, bar area, media room, and outdoor space. SVM OPPOSITE AND TOP: When entering through the grand double doors at the front of the home, you are welcomed with an open, light-filled foyer and great room. Lavish two-story ceilings create a sense of sublime space for guests who enter, which is further complemented by the airy white walls. To the right of the foyer is a curving staircase, a result of the unique turret on the outside of the home, which leads to a double-sided second floor walk above. The inspirational area is meticulously decorated with enjoyable decor, and plush couches from Hinson Galleries. They center around a natural stone fireplace that brings a sense of the outdoors into the pristine space. Floor to ceiling bowed windows, custom designed by Ray Brinegar, fill the back wall and allow natural light to pour into the space. TOP: The kitchen is located in the heart of the home and is open to the great room. The area is not only beautifully crafted but built to entertain multiple guests and family members, with island seating and a casual dining area for six. The large island boasts a fabulous marble countertop, custom made by Macon's Market Surfaces. Cabinets from JBI Custom Cabinetry fill the space from floor to ceiling and conceal a hidden pantry. Again, the balance of industrial and transitional elements can be seen in the kitchen area. Traditional patterns appear in the herringbone backsplash by Acme Brick Tile and Stone, while being crafted in contemporary marble. The rustic brass lamps, courtesy of Ferguson lighting, make the space feel more casual and contrast with the traditional white cabinetry. BOTTOM: The hallway to the master bedroom features furniture by Park Hill Collection and sourced by Laura Burbrink Designs, and the barn doors leading to Frank's office is from Simply Southern Home Décor in Opelika, Al. From the kitchen the home’s open concept continues, leading to a wet bar and billard room. The space was influenced by Franks’ industrial taste, and features iron light structures, rustic brown brick, and darkly stained cabinetry. Adjacent to the pool table is a uniquely repurposed wooden bar top, that allows guests to sit or lounge. The area is perfect for entertaining the adults or a quick game of pool. The goal of Interior Decorator Laura Burbrink was "to create a house that had to work with the family, be durable, low maintenance, and inviting," she says.

OP: One of the most important spaces in a home is the master bedroom, which serves as a place to relax and unwind after a long day. Frank and Melissa have certainly captured this essence in theirs. The master suite is accessed through a gallery off the great room. When entering, your eyes are drawn upwards to an impressive cathedral ceiling, complete with shiplap stained cedar trusses. The room comes with its own screened porch that overlooks the pool and backyard. Melissa uses the private, serene space for prayer each morning. BELOW AND LOWER RIGHT: The master bathroom is a dream space with an array of amenities that create a spa environment in the comfort of the couples own home. With two separate marble-top vanities, crafted by Market Surfaces, the two can get ready for the day with ample space. The room is also fit with a linen cabinet, free-standing tub, private toilet room, and coffee-bar. But perhaps the most impressive element of the bathroom is the large walk-in shower. It features a mix of two different marble tiles, and a glass mosaic feature wall courtesy of Acme Brick and Tile.

JULIAN PLOWDEN

From architectural photography to photojournalism Julian Plowden, former Jordan Vocational graduate and Columbus resident, is an artist that blends architectural photography and photojournalism into romantic photo scenes. Julian majored in Architecture, Neuroscience Education and Media Studies at Kennesaw State University where he developed as an artist while making his thesis portfolio. The “once-in-a-lifetime” photo moments he captures are meant to evoke feelings of “timelessness” and wonder. His style often incorporates lines, angles, parallels, precision and juxtapositions between buildings and people as a reference to his love of architecture and design. Interview By R.CALIGARIS

J

ulian describes the feeling of taking a photograph as “forever in the moment”, nodding to the movielike scenes which he has experienced. Drawing and drafting in Architecture heavily influenced his work. He feels like photography is a game of “Quick Draw” where he has a minute, maybe even seconds, to spot and capture a masterpiece. Pure fun. Julian’s award-winning work has been featured in The Louvre Museum Paris, France, “Best of Atlanta,” NPR, Emory University MARBL Collection, Harvard University, University of Alabama and more. How did your photography journey begin? I started school majoring in Architecture and I used The Coca-Cola Scholarship to purchase a camera to document my portfolio. After that, I let my natural inclinations take control. my photos may even seem like a collage of ideas...well, to me at least."

When you were a student a Jordan Vocational here in Columbus, what did you want to do after graduation? Are you where you thought you would be now? I was really focused on going to college as first-generation college student. I was adopted at 2-years-old, so I've always tried to plan my dream life and family. To be honest, I think if the education system was better handled I'd be farther. I've been disappointed in the inequity I've noticed, but I still can say I'm happy. I just want to make ways for other students.

Are there any photographers who have influenced you? I'll name some you may know and don't know for fun: Deborah Willis for her scholarship and wisdom, Faisal Mohammad for his risks, The great Henri-Cartier Bresson for his philosophy, Robert Frank and William Klein for pushing the genre. How has Columbus influenced you? Columbus has made me more observant in a different manner- It's not like Atlanta where I've done most of my work and there aren't many tall building backdrops or crevice alleyways. Instead, I have found joy in composing the seemingly mundane. I surprise myself often by how I can turn "little big town moments" into fine art.

Can you describe your style? Yes and no- the reason why is because I aim for aesthetics at times, like the idea of "time travel", which often comes across in my photographs, but I also may apply architectural composition specifying how I compose a subject against an environment. When you add it up, there are many layers of analysis that keep a viewer coming back, like "Why did he put that shadow there? and how you unconsciously view a photograph for it's sense of beauty. I play with motifs like this so

What's the best thing about photography? Feeling like you're in a movie...but I guess movies are based on real life....so making myself feel more alive? Discovering the joy of the unknown and unexpected through vision. Which living person(s) do you most admire? Another tough one, I only want to give an answer that matters so I'll say the MIT Media Lab founder Nicholas Negroponte, John Maeda, Mayor Michael Tubbs and Stephen Colbert. Tell us about the role of social media in your career? I could do a movie about social media; from going viral for my work, to being targeted online afterwards by "Russian spies", but mostly I'll say it's been a double-edged sword. I've connected with literally MILLIONS of people by now through social media virality, but it can be hard to see how it affects you immediately until one day you get a call and your photos are showing up somewhere in Paris on a friend's computer. Or I'm being called by a gallery in Los Angeles. It's not an overpowered tool though, more like a mysterybag that you never know what you'll get out of once you put something in....it's fun for sure, and nerve-racking at the same time. What is the moment you are looking to capture when you are shooting protest photography? Something that I want to specifically remember or convey to someone else later. In 100 years, people may never know what you thought or what you said unless you recorded it somewhere, and photos feel

The colors in your images are often muted and reminiscent of images from the 60s – how does this stylistic choice impact your work? I think the dominating feeling would be "reflection", because I blur the line between what is expected. It's like a vague feeling of missing something and familiarity. It may evoke thoughts of history, time or even other artists like Norman Rockwell. What do you aim to express through your photography? Design Intelligence. I just want a better designed world. What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out in this genre? Compare yourself to the masters, research and cultivate your interests. What are you focusing on right now, in your work and photography? I could say a lot here, but I'd summarize it by saying that I'm focusing on connecting with those people who're pushing the boundaries of art, innovation and technology. SVM

like I'm snatching pieces of reality and making reality, in a historical sense, at the same time. I don't try to stick to a motif or signature, but I'm always trying to have fun and evoke emotion. What is the most difficult part of shooting protests? Predicting where the action you want to capture will be and sometimes even having to choose between those fleeting moments when many possibilities are there.

I HAVE FOUND JOY IN COMPOSING THE SEEMINGLY MUNDANE.

fter backpacking around Southeast Asia for almost a year, Janice and Klay Camp decided to call Nosara in Costa Rica home. They worked extremely close with their local architect for close to a year, a lot of back and forth to be sure they came out with something extremely unique to the area. They gained inspiration from their travels; wood and concrete work from Mexico, lights in the concrete squares from Morocco, thatched roof and hanging basket lighting from Bali, and chevron designs from Costa Rica. Janice sat down with SVM to talk about the hospitality business, the overall concept of the hotel, and what they miss the most about Columbus. How did you and your husband Klay decide to get into the hospitality business in Costa Rica? Long story short. Klay and I went backpacking about a year after marrying in 2012 throughout Australia, Southeast Asia and various parts of Central America. Both Klay nor I had ever spent much time abroad and fell in love with the lifestyle and friendships we were creating, inspired by the different types of accommodations we were staying in. Originally, The Nomadic was suppose to be only a hostel, but morphed into more of a hybrid...lifestyle hotel.

Why did you choose Nosara - Costa Rica as the location for your resort? My mom has a cousin from Athens, that retired in Nosara 12 years ago. Back before Klay and I married, we did a road trip in 2009 with his sister and her now husband of the Guanacaste Peninsula here in Costa Rica. We only stayed one night just to meet Diane, sadly leaving because we had already made reservations in another town, however I remember Klay saying, “I’m going to live here one day”. Years later after a house sitting gig in Panama fell through during the time we were toying with the idea of doing some accommodations. We came to Nosara for two months during the rain season and fell in love with its natural beauty. However, the real draw for us was the surf. Nosara has world-class all year round waves. After falling in love with surfing it was all over for us, we knew we had to live nearn the ocean. Please tell us a little about The Nomadic Hotel and the overall concept? When we first decided to do this project there was very little hotels like what we’ve built in an affordable mid range price point. We didn’t want the guests that were looking for spas and concierge service or the traveler who was looking for the bare boned essentials. In the beginning we were gearing The Nomadic towards young working professional or newly married couple types whos budget was more mid range and wanted to provide them with more creature comforts (like comfy bedding, stylish towels, decor from Mexico, included cook to order breakfast, stylish common grounds) things that are hard to source here in Costa Rica. The Nomadic is geared towards people who enjoy meeting other people. We have a sense of community. We actually get to know our guests here and really want them to have a good experience so they’ll want to return year after year.

NOSARA Nosara is a village and a district on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula. It’s known as a yoga center, and for Pacific beaches like Playa Guiones, with its long surf break.

How do you address the pressure of keeping the hotel new and exciting for loyal guests? Constant up keep and changes. Every year we try to make upgrades and new additions to improve the property. It's always cool to see when the return guests actually take notice to the growth.

What are your top feeder markets, and where do you see future travelers coming from? We get most of our travelers from Canada. Honestly, most every guest I speak to is coming from Toronto. I can pick they’re accent like someone can tell I’m from the south.

When is the best time of the year for travelers who want to visit Nosara? From November to April the weather is cooler (more fresh and breezy), and the waves are smaller and clean, great for learning. This is our high season and a great time to escape the cold temps back home. For those visiting The Nomadic Hotel for the first time, what would you recommend they do during their visit? Taking a surf lesson is a must, actually, a few surf lessons over a week is a great thing to do. These instructors down here are great. Lots of one on one time and they even do video analysis that way you can see yourself and what you look like surfing. Also, Nosara is a great place to escape the everyday hassles to do a little self care whether it’s taking a yoga or fitness class (pilates, kickboxing, TRX, Muy Thai etc.) speciality massages, or even natural medicinal care. You and Klay had the chance to travel to amazing places around the world. What was your most memorable vacation experience? We loved the time we spent in Bali, it was like a dreamland! We want to return one day with our children just to see the change, and then visit some of the more secluded islands we didn’t get the chance to see last time. What do you miss the most about Columbus? Definitely our friends and family. We wish we could have everyone here! And southern food for sure, we always see all the new restaurants popping up downtown, via friends social media, and it makes us salivate. SVM

PETS spotlight PETS

Pets play an important role in many people’s lives. In addition to seeing-eye dogs and dogs that can be trained to detect seizures, animals can also be used in occupational therapy, speech therapy, or physical rehabilitation to help patients recover. Aside from these designated therapeutic roles, animals are also valued as companions, and can certainly affect the quality of our lives.

CHRIS WOODUFF Daisy Woodruff

How did you come up with the name? Does is have any special significance? She is named after the protagonist and namesake of the Henry James novella, Daisy Miller. It was significant because both Daisy Dog and Daisy Miller were blondes… and Daisy Dog, when I found her, was much like Daisy Miller: sweet, innocent and unrefined. How old are your pets? I found her on the street in 2007. She had been badly beaten, was emaciated, starving and covered in filth. The vet told me when I brought her in that she was likely 1 or 2 years old. I believe she is probably 13 or 14 years old now. What are your pets’ favorite foods? Daisy LOVES ham, bacon, hamburgers and steak… and can’t stand green beans. Are you involved with any charities in the community who support animals? Yes, I’m a supporter of Paws Humane.

AFTER BRIBING HER WITH HAM, I LEAD HER INTO THE BACK YARD AND WENT TO GRAB MY KEYS SO WE COULD HEAD TO WEEMS ROAD ANIMAL HOSPITAL. NO SOONER HAD I CLOSED THE GATE, SHE POP UP NEXT TO ME LICKING MY HAND. SHE’S BEEN WITH ME EVER SINCE. What has your pet taught you about life? That things happen as they’re supposed to, when they’re supposed to. We can’t control the future and we can’t give up on this life – no matter how tough the circumstance, keep pressing forward and remember what has happened to you but don’t let it define you. Forgive, love and smile or wag your tail when you’re happy. Our past experiences should help us grow so that we can better appreciate the present. OH! She also taught me the importance of naps! Who is your veterinarian? Daisy has been a patient of Weems Road Animal Hospital since 2007. Dr. Satterwhite was her vet until his retirement and she has been cared for by Dr. McDermott and Dr. Cowley at Weems Rd. since. How would you describe your pets in three words? Angelic, curious, and of course, human!

Daisy's drawing by artist Kate Scrivner

What is a unique memory involving your pet? I’ll never forget that day in July of 2007. She was scampering loose on the street where I used to live – filthy, scared, beaten and hungry. Several of the neighbors and I had gathered to strategize on how to help but no one could get close enough – she was too fearful of humans. I posited an idea to the group which we all agreed to. Thankfully it worked. Come to find out, a package of Oscar Meyer Deli ham will coax even the most wary of canines into your arms. After bribing her with ham, I lead her into the back yard and went to grab my keys so we could head to Weems Road Animal Hospital. No sooner had I closed the gate, she pop up next to me licking my hand. She’s been with me ever since. SVM

York; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; New Orleans Museum of Art, Louisiana; and Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC, among other institutions. Thompson left the United States for Germany in the 1960s due to the racism and sexism she had experienced. She returned in 1985 and settled in Atlanta, Georgia, where she would live for the rest of her life. During that time, the artist began working on a larger scale, creating works on multiple panels. On view in the large gallery will be Radiation Explorations paintings, 1994, which are characterized by blue backgrounds with the occasional incorporation of white. The artist's personal interpretations of invisible worlds, such as sound and space, manifest as vibrant colors and energetic lines. Though her paintings are not literal translations, they embody an emotional understanding of complex concepts through expressive, rhythmic mark-making.

antorini, also known as Thera, is widely considered to be Greece’s most spectacular island. Thousands of tourists come every year to gape at the caldera of this volcano, a vestige of what was probably the world’s largest volcanic eruption ever. This eruption, which occurred sometime around 1450 B.C., caused the middle of the volcano to sink, leaving a caldera of high cliffs, one of the world’s most dramatic geographic spectacles. There is a theory, one that has fired the imagination of writers, artists and mystics since ancient times that postulates that the island was part of the lost continent of Atlantis. Santorini is no secret and draws crowds for most of the year, yet it wears its tourism well and its offerings make it worth the bustle. The island’s intrigue reaches deep into the past, with the fascinating Minoan site of Akrotiri and the gorgeous traditional hilltop village of Oia. It also glides effortlessly into the future with accomplished artists, excellent wineries, a unique brewery, and some of the Cyclades finest dining experiences. The sandy, multicolored beaches are simply the icing on the cake.

OIA CASTLE Just like the rest of the Cycladic islands, Oia attracted the interest of the Venetians, who expertised in naval activities, as a fertile place for trading business. They conquered Santorini and built five castles on it; the Castle of Skaros (Imerovigli) where the Latin Giacomo Barozzi settled with his family and other nobles, the Castle of Pyrgos, the Castle of Emboreion and Saint Nikolas Castle. Nowadays, just a few piecesof this fortification can be seen in Oia, as most of it was destroyed due to the earthquake (1956).

Sterling Vineyards, a division of Treasury Wine Estates, is bringing a trio of wines to market in re-sealable aluminum bottles. The lineup is designed not only to improve convenience for consumers, but to do so with the winery’s unique sense of style. By OLIVIA SHEEHAN

S

terling Vineyards was founded in 1964 by British international paper broker, Oxford University graduate, and former London Financial Times writer Peter Newton. Impressed with the quality of California wines and inspired by the beauty of the Napa Valley, Newton decided to broaden the business interest of his company, Sterling International, with the purchase of a fifty acre parcel of established vineyard bordering Calistoga. The Sterling Vineyards winemaking team believes that their wines should express true varietal character. They craft each wine with this in mind, choosing gentle techniques tailored to bring out the aromas and flavors that each Napa grape variety develops in the terroir it likes best. The resulting wines have exceptional quality that shines anywhere, with intriguing complexity that brings out the best in a wide variety of cuisines. Sterling Vineyards is now bringing a trio of it’s meticulously crafted wines to the market in re-sealable aluminum bottles. Flavors include — Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rosé from the Sterling California Vintners. The recyclable aluminum bottles feature a brushed texture in a tall, narrow, 375-ml size accented by a color cap keyed to the varietal and echoed by a color bar at the bottom of the bottle. This new collection of wines was created for the in-tune customer looking to consume quality-crafted wines, while at sporting and concerts events, and grab-and-go occasions. The line up is meant to improve connivence for the customers, while upholding the winery’s unique sense of style. Sterling Vinyard’s new aluminum wines are bottled in Napa Valley, California and distributed in Georgia by Georgia Crown Distributing Co. SVM

KUMON MATH AND READING CENTER Kumon is an after-school math and reading enrichment program that unlocks the potential of children by motivating them to achieve more on their own. High school math teacher Toru Kumon developed the Kumon method of learning more than 50 years ago in Japan, when his son was struggling with secondgrade arithmetic. Realizing that a strong foundation in the basics--addition, subtraction, multiplication and division--was essential for higher-level math, Kumon created a series of math worksheets for his son to work on after school. Students advance through the program at their own pace. Their emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and selfreliant. They monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires. The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension.

HALLIE TURNER PRIVATE SCHOOL

Hallie Turner Private School began in 1935 with a small ad in the Columbus newspaper. This ad resulted in one student sitting at Mrs. Hallie A. Turner‘s dining room table. But one pupil was all Miss Hallie needed. Little did Mrs. Turner realize at the time that her efforts would be the beginning of a school that would flourish and grow to have a marked effect on the community. Mrs. Turner’s philosophy was “Each student is an individual and should be treated as such.” She implemented her philosophy through individual attention and self-paced study, often teaching the student how to study. Through the years, Mrs. Turner helped many students reach their education goals. Hallie Turner Private School is a unique educational institution awarding a high school diploma to those who successfully complete the graduation requirements. Their purpose is to offer a traditional curriculum, either college preparatory or general, through a non-traditional approach that focuses on mastery of prescribed material, and allows each student to progress at his or her own pace with individual instruction. Whether a student is there to graduate with a Hallie Turner high school diploma or to make up credits for another high school, their unique combination of small classes, individua instruction, and self-paced learning can set the stage for success. Convenient school hours in day or night classes offer flexibility to help accommodate students in different situations. The school also offers its program throughout the summer (optional) for credit recovery students from other schools and for regular Hallie Turner students earning credits to graduate. GAC Accredited with Quality and HOPE eligible, this unusual school continues to provide the community with a high school tradition that is truly unique.

LAST IMPRESSIONS NATURE

B

Bougainvillea

ougainvillea is a subtropical flowering vine that sometimes grows into a shrub—was named for Admiral Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729 – 1811), who was the first Frenchman to circumnavigate the globe during a three-year voyage in the mid-1700s. Although the flagship’s botanist, Philibert Commerson, was the first to describe this plant in scientific literature, he is incorrectly credited for its discovery. It was his assistant, an herbalist named Jeanne Baret, who found it growing in the hills near Rio de Janeiro and carried it back on board. Baret, a peasant woman who knew much more about botany than Commerson, had agreed to disguise herself as a man to sail with him and 300 other men around the world. Never mind that the life expectancy of a female found aboard an 18th-century sailing vessel was extremely short. After two years at sea, and while anchored off Tahiti, the island’s inhabitsoviewsmag.com

ants discovered her identity. In an attempt to wiggle out of this dangerous situation, Commerson assured the admiral that his name would live on in botanical perpetuity if he spared Baret’s life and protected her from Bougainville’s angry, not to mention lascivious, sailors. Bougainvillea being a tropical vine can bursts forth with colorful flowers for 11 months of the year if it's planted in the right climate. To grow bougainvillea in Columbus, plant it in full sun, slightly acidic and well-drained soil, and a relatively hot and dry climate. Continue caring for your bougainvillea plant by watering sparingly, fertilizing every few months, pruning at the end of the season, and training it the climb a nearby wall or trellis. When cared for properly, this beautiful plant should return each year. But remember, since the bougainvillea is a tropical shrub, and if planted in pots, they should be brought indoors when temperatures outside drop down to 32 degrees Fahrenheit. SVM
