Summer glam

Whether you’re a minimalist or love a bit of drama, there’s a beauty trend for everyone

this summer. JENNIFER CAMPBELL

After months of lockdown and social distancing, many of us are emerging back into the world and are ready to ditch our stay-at-home looks in favour of something a little more fun. Bright days and warm nights are the perfect excuses to channel the optimism of summer and play with colour and brand-new styles. Whether you enjoy minimal make-up and a focus on fresh skin or like to experiment with more daring looks, you’re sure to fi nd something from this trend line-up to incorporate into your own style.

GRAPHIC EYES

This season, bold eyes make a statement. Graphic liners are being used in exciting new ways — multi-texture liners, for example, add colour to the eyelids, while underliner provides a fresh look. In fact, underliner was spotted on many of this year’s runways and is proving very versatile — go dramatic with bold black, or opt for a more subtle version with a toned-down brown.

If you want to try something extra-fun, you might consider adding a pop of colour to the inner corners of your eyes. The look pairs well with an otherwise minimal aesthetic — think nude lips, clear skin, and a splash of neon yellow, blue or pink eyeshadow. Mastering this trend is surprisingly easy as it’s more about the colour that you pick than the shape itself. Simply choose your favourite shade of eyeliner or eyeshadow and apply it to the inner top lid and the bottom inner lash. Avoid harsh lines by softening the make-up with a fl u y brush.

POWERFUL BROWS

Big, bold brows have been around for a while, and it seems like the trend is a while, and it seems like the trend is here to stay. For a fresh and modern here to stay. For a fresh and modern look, it’s best to go natural — choose a look, it’s best to go natural — choose a pencil that isn’t too pigmented and a pencil that isn’t too pigmented and a clear brow gel for a low maintenance clear brow gel for a low maintenance option. For extra-fl u y brows, consider For extra-fl u y brows, consider the geolift trend — the look is all the geolift trend — the look is all about structure and symmetry, with about structure and symmetry, with an emphasis on fullness. Similarly, an emphasis on fullness. Similarly, feathered brows also embrace a natural feathered brows also embrace a natural shape and are soft and lush.

POPPING LIPS

Nude lips are undoubtedly classic, but this summer sees bright shades of pink, coral and red taking centre stage. If you choose to embrace a vibrant colour palette, be sure to go for long wear products that are highly pigmented and will last throughout the day. Matte lip crèmes and stains are both great options, while glossy formulas in lively hues also work beautifully with this look.

Besides bright colours, there are a few other ways to create an on-trend statement lip. Twotone lips are reminiscent of the ‘90s — create the look with a modern twist by applying a lip liner before putting on a nude gloss. And when it comes to gloss, it’s all about high-wattage lacquers this season.

FRESH SKIN

Fresh skin never goes out of fashion, and for good reason. Minimal make-up accentuates healthy, natural skin and works well with any skin tone and type. To get the look right, choose a lightweight foundation or tinted moisturiser that feels comfortable, and simply add a light dusting of shimmery powder on your nose and cheekbones for a little extra shimmer. For a fresh, neutral look, make sure that your eyes, lips and cheeks all match — choose tones of champagne, nude or soft pink.
