WELCOME TO THE BANGALOW MUSIC FESTIVAL AUGUST 15-17, 2014 This year’s festival is all about the power of partnerships – the internal essence of chamber music. We are particularly focused on the power of two, “If you spend your life with another musician who experiences music maybe a little differently, you can help each other…couples can achieve more.” Couples are more than the sum of the parts. Cupid’s arrow has often initiated magnificent partnerships between classical musicians throughout history: JS Bach and Anna Magdalena; Rossini and Spanish opera diva Isabella Colbran; Robert and Clara Schumann; Gustav and Alma Mahler; Daniel Barenboim and Jacqueline DuPré. We present our own couples – Jack and Vicky, Gil and Sivan – and explore the relationships between two entities: SxS dual to the death with Trichotomy in the world premiere of ‘The Odd Couple’; two Barbie dolls fight for Ken’s affection in Michael Daugherty’s ‘What’s that spell?’; the titan compositions of Brahms’ Violin Concerto and Mahler’s Adagietto; Berstein’s ‘Halil’ for two flute soloists; the two great Russians Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov; and Jewish greats Schoenberg and Mendelsohn’s works for double string ensembles. Chemistry, synchronicity, contrast and balance: this year’s festival celebrates the genius of partnerships, symmetry and the intimate art of couples.
