MESSAGE FROM HER EXCELLENCY MS QUENTIN BRYCE AC ACO GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA As Patron of Southern Cross Soloists I have looked on with pride witnessing the ensemble grow and sustain a long-term position in the Australian classical music scene. It is the friendly spirit and nature of the ensemble, and their stylish and elegant performances that endear them to audiences across the country. Across their 18 year history, the group has earned a reputation as one of the finest chamber music ensembles in Australia. This reputation is earned from their busy schedule of national performances, at the Bangalow Music Festival in northern NSW and the award-winning SunWater and Stanwell Winter Music School. These bring outstanding opportunities to music students from rural centres of Queensland. I had the pleasure of welcoming the Southern Cross Soloists to Government House last September. The ensemble delivered a beautiful program of music to the delight of all in attendance. I wish Southern Cross Soloists all the best for their activities in 2013.

Building on a remarkably successful year which increased their audience reach and broadened their repertoire, the Southern Cross Soloists’ 2013 concert series once again offers a diverse selection of familiar classics, little known works and world premieres. It will not only showcase the individual talents of QPAC’s ensemble in residence, but offer the opportunity for collaboration with internationally renowned soloists. QPAC is committed to supporting the activities of this fine chamber ensemble – from the presentation of their annual series to featuring their talents in events such as the Out of the Box festival for children and Brisbane Open House. Congratulations to Creative Director Tania Frazer and all of the members of the ensemble for their ongoing commitment to the development of chamber music in Australia. MESSAGE FROM PAUL DEAN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR LAUREATE SOUTHERN CROSS SOLOISTS Being Artistic Director Laureate of this long established and fine chamber ensemble gives me a large amount of pride. I am delighted to see the group’s many pursuits throughout the annual season of events remaining vibrant, eclectic and relevant. With the benefit of being able to watch the continued growth from 2000 kilometres away, I can honestly and proudly say that SxS has created a significant and valuable mark on the Australian music scene. MESSAGE FROM TANIA FRAZER CREATIVE DIRECTOR SOUTHERN CROSS SOLOISTS Welcome to 2013 with Southern Cross Soloists and an exceptional program brimming with first time soloists and music from traditional through to the modern day. In usual SxS style we are again pushing boundaries and defying conventions as we celebrate our 18th year as one of the few permanent chamber ensembles in Australia. We are delighted to be returning to the ambience of the superb QPAC Concert Hall for our 2013 series as ensemble in residence. We have three exquisite soloists this year – all new to Southern Cross Soloists. Deutsche Grammophon Artist and Grammy award nominee, Avi Avital, is taking the world by storm with the beautiful strains of his mandolin and this will be his inaugural trip to Australia (actually to the Southern Hemisphere). Plus this will also be our first ever concert with a mandolin guest soloist. Our second concert will be a knockout with gregarious, rogue percussion soloist Timothy Constable and the exquisite dancing of Kimberly Davis, Stacey McCallum and Shane Weatherby, choreographed by Rosetta Cook from 2ballerinas. For our third concert we are thrilled to welcome our first guest solo cellist – and what a cellist Li-Wei Qin is! Silver medalist at the 2001 Tchaikovsky Competition and 2002 Young Australian of the Year, Li-Wei is now an internationally acclaimed cello soloist and Universal Music recording artist. We are certainly looking forward to hearing his electrifying virtuosity, glorious sound and superb musicianship. 2013 will be yet another vintage year with something to capture everyone’s imagination. So see you on Sundays in 2013 – sit back and indulge in our afternoon ‘chamberfest’!
About Southern Cross Soloists Since its formation in 1995, Southern Cross Soloists has become one of Australia’s most successful and widely respected chamber ensembles, establishing an international reputation for ground-breaking performance along the way. The members of the Soloists are highly respected and sought-after musicians: Tania Frazer (oboe), Paul Dean (clarinet), Peter Luff (horn), Kevin Power (piano), Margaret Schindler (soprano), Alan Smith (violin) and Patrick Murphy (cello). The group’s unique combination of instruments allows for the performance of a wide variety of repertoire. They have undertaken successful international tours to the United States, New Zealand, China, Canada, South Korea and Singapore. They tour nationally each year, often with guest artists, and are guests of events such as the Camden Haven Festival, Brisbane Festival, Queensland Music Festival, and the Townsville International Festival of Chamber Music. The esteemed Bangalow Music Festival was established by the ensemble in 2002. The festival has been described by Peter Sculthorpe as ‘the most exciting festival outside a capital city’ and has attracted artists including Ilya Konovalov, the Australian String Quartet, Slava and Leonard Grigoryan, Genevieve Lacey and Brett Dean. Dedication to music education takes the ensemble throughout regional Queensland each year. 2006 witnessed the launch of the SunWater and Stanwell Winter Music School where students from across Queensland gathered for an intensive week of rehearsals, workshops and concerts. The enormous success of this event has led to its annual inclusion in the Soloists’ calendar from 2008, and in 2009, the school received the APRA Award for Most Outstanding Contribution to Music Education in Australia. Southern Cross Soloists supports the career development of young professionals and in 2012 appointed Macarthur Clough (clarinet) as inaugural intern. Southern Cross Soloists has a strong commitment to commissioning and performing Australian music and has commissioned works by composers including Paul Stanhope, Gerard Brophy, Gordon Kerry, Andrew Schultz and James Ledger. Southern Cross Soloists is currently Ensemble in Residence at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
Mandolin Mastery SUNDAY 24 FEBRUARY, 3PM CONCERT HALL, INTIMATE MODE Avi Avital, Mandolin Deutsche Grammophon artist and Grammy nominated mandolin virtuoso, Avi Avital, joins the Southern Cross Soloists in their first concert of 2013 in a stunning program featuring Baroque masterworks and traditional folk songs. This Israeli mandolin master charms audiences with his striking musicianship, technical brilliance and flamboyant style. The concert will showcase his extraordinary talents as we circle the globe visiting countries including France, Italy and Hungary. Be captivated with Avi’s performance of Bloch’s famous and haunting Nigun – Hebrew for ‘melody’.

Recognised by The New York Times for his ‘exquisitely sensitive playing’ and ‘stunning agility’, Avi Avital is the first mandolin player to receive a Grammy nomination in the category Best Instrumental Soloist and records exclusively for Deutsche Grammophon. Internationally renowned for his performances at venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Berlin Philharmonic Hall, Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing and Wigmore Hall in London, this will be his Australian debut performance.

Movement and percussion have been part of the human experience since time immemorial. Throughout history, dance has been used to tell stories – in ceremonies, rituals and entertainment – and has often been accompanied by rhythmic music. So, when Southern Cross Soloists invited percussionist Timothy Constable (an absolute audience favourite) to take part in this concert, it was with excitement that he agreed to participate as both guest soloist and composer. With an eclectic mix of works from the Baroque to the brand new, there’s something for everyone in this vibrant program.

Award-winning percussionist, composer, producer and singer, Timothy Constable is Artistic Director of Synergy, Australia’s premiere percussion group. He also appears as guest artist throughout Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, Europe and South East Asia.

An exclusive Universal Music artist, Li-Wei Qin is well known for his artistry and sincerity of interpretation – and this sumptuous concert will explore the beauty and versatility of his cello. The program flows from the fiery Italian repertoire of Paganini, Vivaldi and Rossini to the lush sounds of Sibelius, Grieg and André Previn’s exquisite Vocalise, and ends with the joyous fun of Matthew Hindson. This will truly be a celebration to remember.

Li-Wei Qin has appeared all over the world as a soloist and chamber musician. He won First Prize in the prestigious Naumburg Competition in New York in 2001, and has since performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic and Australian Chamber Orchestra, amongst many others.

Clarinetist and Artistic Director Laureate Paul Dean is the Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music and is in much demand as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. He regularly appears at both Australian and international music festivals and has appeared as a soloist with most of the major orchestras and chamber ensembles in Australia.
Creative Director Tania Frazer, formerly Principal Oboe with the Israel Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, enjoys a busy career as a soloist and teacher. A recipient of numerous prizes and awards, Tania won first prize at the Coleman International Competition in Los Angeles, the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Award in London and has appeared in orchestras all over the world under conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, Lorin Maazel, Christoph Eschenbach, Neemi J채rvi and Sir Neville Marriner.

Lyric soprano Margaret Schindler, a Senior Lecturer at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, is a nationally recognised teacher who is also in great demand as a recitalist, particularly for her performances of Baroque and contemporary repertoire. Margaret has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in Australia and Europe.
Horn player Peter Luff is Senior Lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, as well as Associate Principal Horn with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. He is highly regarded as a player and teacher throughout Australia while also developing a successful career as a conductor. Peter performed in the inaugural Australian World Orchestra concert in 2011 and is a regular guest lecturer at the Australian National Academy of Music.

Kevin Power OAM pursues a busy freelance career as a pianist, performing regularly as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician. He was formerly on the staff of the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and is the Musical Director and Chorus Master of The Queensland Choir.
On his return to Australia after extensive European study, violinist Alan Smith joined the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra as Associate Concertmaster and was later appointed as their Concertmaster. Alan became Concertmaster of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in 1995. He also is a violin lecturer at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and often performs as a soloist throughout Australia.
Patrick Murphy CELLO Cellist Patrick Murphy was recently appointed Cello Performance Fellow at the University of Queensland School of Music. Prior to this he was Lecturer in Cello at the University of Tasmania, Hobart Conservatorium. Patrick was a founding member of the Tankstream Quartet which toured internationally after winning first prize in the 2002 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, Japan.

Latecomers will be admitted to the Concert Hall at a suitable break in the performance.
All sales are final. Refunds are not available once a booking application has been processed. For subscribers, exchanges into another concert in the 2013 series can be made up to 24 hours prior to the concert that the subscriber no longer wishes to attend. Please call 136 246 to arrange an exchange. A $3.40 fee applies per exchange.
Complimentary programs will be available on the day of the performance and issued to patrons upon entry to the Concert Hall.
Single Tickets for each concert are available from Monday 7 January 2013 by calling 136 246 or booking online at qpac.com.au. A transaction fee applies on single ticket sales. Subscribers are able to purchase additional single tickets when purchasing their subscription. Please indicate requirements on the Subscription Form. Wheelchair and disability access is available for all performances. Please attach a note to your booking form if required. Concessions are available for full pensioners, health care card holders and full-time students.
