4 Ways to Help Nurses During the Coronavirus Pandemic

A

merica's nurses are on the front lines of the fight against coronavirus, providing safe, quality, compassionate and nondiscriminatory care to those they serve, many of whom are doing so at significant risk to their own well-being.

that others may have come in contact with such as doors, shopping carts or credit card readers. 4. Follow local guidelines. Seek guidance from local public health officials, such as those at your county health department.

The American Nurses Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Nurses Association, created the Coronavirus Response Fund for Nurses to provide direct financial assistance, mental health support and science- and data-based information to nurses serving on the front lines.

Nurses are reliable and proven responders during infectious disease emergencies, providing essential care where it is needed most. Following simple steps like these can go a long way toward keeping people healthy.

"Nurses always answer the call to serve their patients, communities and country during times of crisis," said American Nurses Foundation Chair Tim Porter-O'Grady, DM, EdD, ScD (h), APRN, FAAN, FACCWS. "As we confront the new and emerging challenges of this pandemic, nurses are and will continue serving on the front lines in extraordinary ways." To show your support during this uncertain time, consider taking part in these four key actions: 1. Text THANKS to 20222 to donate $10. One of the easiest ways to directly support nurses is to donate $10 to the Coronavirus Response Fund for Nurses, spread the word to others using the hashtag #ThanksNurses, and visit ThanksNurses.org. 2. Stay home. Only leave home for essentials and maintain a safe distance from other people. 3. Wash your hands. Frequently wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating and after blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing. It is also important to wash your hands after going out in public and touching items www.southjerseymom.com

Donations will help provide direct financial assistance, mental health support and science- and data-based information to benefit nurses. Visit ThanksNurses.org to learn more. About the Support Fund The American Nurse Foundation's Coronavirus Response Fund for Nurses is a Nationwide effort to provide direct financial assistance, mental health support and science- and data-based resources to benefit nurses. The Johnson & Johnson company and its TYLENOL brand made a $1.5 million commitment to launch this fund. A portion of the donations will help support Nurses House, Inc., a national fund for registered nurses in need. The American Nurses Foundation is partnering with this organization to help nurses affected by COVID-19. Nurses who are unable to work due to COVID-19 infection, are caring for a family member with COVID-19 or are under mandatory quarantine can submit and application for assistance. Family Features. hen you’re on a quest to create a home environment that promotes wellness, it can be difficult to know where to begin. One easy solution is to look for small changes that improve your personal well-being while also promoting a better environment overall. Consider these sustainable projects and changes for a healthier, happier household: Rethink window treatments. Windows can affect a home in numerous ways, both good and bad. On the upside, ambient light is a natural mood-boosting alternative to energy-hungry fixtures. Windows add character, and the right window treatments can play an essential role in a decorative scheme. In the winter, windows can also be natural conveyors of the sun’s heat, reducing your reliance on energy. You may also be surprised to learn that the window treatments you choose to help manage light and climate can play a big role in your home’s health and sustainability. Drapes can be difficult to clean, which means they can trap dirt, dust and other allergens that tarnish air quality. Many blinds use synthetic materials, making them less than ideal earth-conscious options. Your best bet is bamboo or wood treatments that are certified as eco-friendly and easy to keep clean.

Sustainable Home Upgrades for Better Health

Lessen the laundry load. Reducing the amount of laundry you do not only saves time but is also better for the environment. Washing clothes accounts for 15-40% of the water consumption for an average family of four, according to Home Water Works, and the annual energy consumption of typical electric clothes dryers often equals the cost of running a new energy-efficient refrigerator, clothes washer and dishwasher combined. An alternative like a heated towel rack uses less energy than a standard dryer (about the same amount of electricity as a few light bulbs). Not only does an option like an Amba heated towel rack save energy and time by reducing the frequency of washing towels, it keeps them dry and free of mold and mildew between washes. Plus, wrapping up in a warm towel can help reduce joint stiffness and muscle spasms, according to research by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. With 150 affordable mounted and free-standing models made from 100% recyclable, marine-grade stainless steel, and custom color options available, it can be easy to add a stylish accent to bathrooms, laundry rooms or mudrooms. Reduce household chemicals. It may seem that the stronger, the better is the best approach when it comes to fighting dirt and germs, but in fact, there are many negative health and environmental impacts from harsh cleaners. Opt instead for more natural formulas that deliver the same clean with fewer synthetic ingredients. Aside from cleaners, there are likely numerous other sources of potentially risky chemicals throughout your home, including furniture, clothing and bedding that requires dry cleaning. Products containing chemical dyes and synthetic materials are not only potential irritants, they often also carry the weight of lesser earthfriendly production practices. Linens made from natural materials may help you avoid unnecessary exposure to chemicals, and you can readily find options that help alleviate concerns about allergens and allow you to support sustainable manufacturing practices. milk

• Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an illness caused by a virus that can spread from person to person. • The virus that causes COVID-19 is a new coronavirus that has spread throughout the world. • COVID-19 symptoms can range from mild (or no symptoms) to severe illness.

Practice social distancing • Buy groceries and medicine, go to the doctor, and complete banking activities online when possible. • If you must go in person, stay at least 6 feet away from others and disinfect items you must touch. • Get deliveries and takeout, and limit in-person contact as much as possible.

Know how COVID-19 is spread • You can become infected by coming into close contact (about 6 feet or two arm lengths) with a person who has COVID-19. COVID-19 is primarily spread from person to person. • You can become infected from respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. • You may also be able to get it by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, and then by touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

Protect yourself and others from COVID-19 • There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. The best way to protect yourself is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19. • Stay home as much as possible and avoid close contact with others. • Wear a cloth face covering that covers your nose and mouth in public settings. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Prevent the spread of COVID-19 if you are sick • Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care. • Avoid public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis. • Separate yourself from other people and pets in your home. • There is no specific treatment for COVID-19, but you can seek medical care to help relieve your symptoms. • If you need medical attention, call ahead.

Know your risk for severe illness • Everyone is at risk of getting COVID-19. • Older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions may be at higher risk for more severe illness.

A Child-Life Specialist’s Tips for Creating Normalcy for Your Kids During COVID-19 By Christine Shuey, Child-Life Specialist—Virtua Health Pediatric Pavilion

T

he spread of COVID-19 has disrupted millions of children’s lives, and being quarantined can cause feelings of helplessness and frustration for kids and parents. Our advice for managing at this time is similar to the guidance we’d give to our patients and families in the midst of a hospitalization or medical procedure. Keep Lines of Communication Open The media has been helpful in sharing vital news, but some of it is also dark and grim, so consider monitoring how much and where you watch the news. Set a limit to check in with the local and/or national news once or twice a day and for a specific amount of time. Given the gravity of the information being shared, maybe watch on your own and decide what you want to share. Don’t be afraid to discuss it. Ask your children what they have heard and correct any misconceptions. It’s important to be transparent about what’s happening, but watch for cues from your kids to gauge how they’re handling it. It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers. Tap into age-appropriate resources to explain COVID-19 and the importance of listening to the experts to keep ourselves safe. Check out The Child Mind Institute at childmind.org, NPR (search Just for Kids) at npr.org, or PBS at pbs.org. Make Time Every Day for Play Playing is one of the best ways for kids to cope with stress. Play helps kids regulate emotions and gives them something else to focus on. You don’t have to have perfect, Pinterest-worthy activities planned. A combination of independent play and social play is important. Kids need some undivided attention in order to provide security.

14 | May 2020

Ideas for social play include: • Board games and puzzles • Charades • Dance parties to fun music • YouTube karaoke • Imaginative play like playing restaurant or school, or playing with dolls • Building creations with Legos or Play-Doh • Outdoor play like playing freeze tag, kicking a ball, or having races Create Structure with Flexible Routines Routines and play provide a sense of control. While there are still a lot of unknowns, we know structure provides a sense of normalcy. You don’t have to schedule the whole day. Providing structured times for wake up, meals, and bedtime is extremely beneficial. Make sure there’s a chunk of time for free play to give your children opportunities for control. Unexpected things will happen. Be kind to yourself when things don’t go as planned. If you need ideas or help creating a routine, tap into experts providing free resources. We know that some of life’s greatest trials lead to our greatest lessons. This challenge can strengthen your family bonds and empower your kids with better tools for managing change, disappointment and stress. This article was released during the rapid spread of COVID-19.
