Stamford

With over 600 listed buildings of mellow limestone there is so much to explore in the UK’s first conservation town.

W

hen the head of Visit England reveals that Stamford is ‘in danger of becoming his very favourite tourism town’, it is undoubtedly one of the best endorsements you can get. James Berresford said he was delighted to be back in town for the second Georgian Festival which was organised by South Kesteven District Council and attracted an amazing 53,000 people over the weekend. He said: “To my mind Stamford offers a quintessential English heritage experience and it’s festivals like this that help put any district on the map. You are in danger of making Stamford my very favourite tourism town.” The town is unusual in having whole streets entirely made up of Georgian houses, yet vibrant with modern life, and it’s an architectural legacy which has

4 www.southwestlincs.com

drawn innumerable film companies for classics such as Pride and Prejudice and Middlemarch. It’s stone heritage has drawn many accolades over the centuries – and tourists from far and wide. And it’s unique blend of history, niche shopping, stunning architecture and an overriding sense of community even won the supreme compliment from the Sunday Times Newspaper as ‘Britain’s top place to live’ (March 2013). A vibrant Friday street market epitomises all that’s best about market towns, stretching along the High Street, Ironmonger Street and into Broad Street. And the regular farmers’ market offers produce traceability and a sales outlet for local food producers. On a daily basis Stamford’s eating houses, pubs and food speciality shops

make its winding streets a voyage of gastronomic discovery. Its historic core is a perfect backdrop for businesses and niche retailers alike. It boasts a world-class watchmaker, award winning food producers, an independent brewery and a thriving cafe culture. Stamford Arts Centre, built in 1768 is one of the oldest provincial theatres in England, and is a thriving focal point for arts and cinema and houses the Tourist Information Centre. Local people and visitors alike benefit from a wealth of attractions on the town’s doorstep including Rutland Water to the west, one of Europe’s largest reservoirs and now a haven for fishing, cycling, sailing and wildlife, historic houses like Grimsthorpe Castle and Burghley House, and rolling countryside with picturesque villages all round.

Grantham Festival goers gravitate to town

F

rom ancient coaching inns to celebrated home town status for world leaders in their fields, Grantham has tempting credentials and a host of reasons to visit. Sir Isaac Newton, born just south of Grantham at Woolsthorpe Manor, inspires a biennial Gravity Fields Festival scheduled for 21-25 September 2016 with a mix of science, arts, heritage, outdoor events and sheer spectacle. It’s an event that drew an audience of 65,000 to the town in 2014, with a host of eminent patrons, speakers and world class arts entertainment. Woolsthorpe Manor itself is planning a ‘Year of Wonders’ as visitors and the

8 www.southwestlincs.com

scientific community celebrate the 350th anniversary of Newton’s law of gravitational forces – prompted by the falling apple at his birthplace. Grantham Museum has a permanent exhibition dedicated to one of the town’s most famous daughters – Margaret Thatcher – and the town has reminders of Edith Smith, the first woman police constable in England given full powers of arrest in 1915. Mentioned as a Royal Manor in the Domesday Book, Grantham has come a long way since the days when it was recognised as a stopping place for kings and nobleman. The Angel and Royal Hotel, originally a court of King John, still welcomes visitors to its High Street location, adding to Grantham’s wealth of hotel accommodation in and around the town. Trains on the direct east coast rail line to London are now operated by Virgin Trains, bringing Grantham to within an hour’s travel from London. The town’s parish church of St Wulfram’s boasts a soaring 282ft spire – one of the most important town churches in England – and will soon overlook a new Minster quarter commemorating its historical significance. Grantham’s cafe culture goes from strength to strength, with specialist cafes vying for trade alongside restaurants from award wining Nepalese fare at the Everest Inn to bijou eating places for every palate. A bustling Saturday street market serves a growing population of over 40,000, with Grantham’s growth agenda at last delivering results with work starting on a much needed

southern relief road to complement its first class road links. It has one of the best leisure facilities in the East Midlands at The Meres and a wealth of other attractions from championship standard 18 hole golf courses to smaller rural courses, impressive castles and homes, and unrivalled countryside for walking, riding and cycling. There’s also a whole host of dining experiences from Michelin rated Harry’s Place just outside the town to Bombay Brasserie, a winner in the East Midlands Food Awards best Indian category, as well as a wide range of other top quality restaurants to suit all tastes. Grantham has a wonderful choice of places to visit as well as a selection of splendid parks and open spaces for people

to spend their leisure time. On its doorstep are lots of local attractions including Belton House, Belvoir Castle, the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, Grimsthorpe Castle and Burghley House near Stamford, home of the famous horse trials. On top of that there’s also the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of festivals and events covering everything from theatre through to music and art. All that’s left is to find is a great place to stay to savour all that the area has to offer. And we have plenty of those too. From hotels to coaching inns, b&b’s, to guest houses, farmhouses to self catering accommodation, we have something to suit every taste. www.southwestlincs.com 9

Bourne

Ancient roots and a modern outlook

F

rom its motor racing connections to the accolade of having one of the best river bridges to play Poohsticks, Bourne is a charming south Lincolnshire town with many faces. Its Heritage Museum is a popular visitor attraction in Baldock’s Mill, Bourne’s only remaining mill of the three listed in the Domesday Book with its new mill wheels visible. It’s devoted to local history, from the water and railway industries to agriculture, wartime memorabilia and Raymond Mays, Bourne’s most famous racing driver. Bourne is famous as the home of English Racing Automobiles (ERA) and British Racing Motors (BRM) racing cars, with

12 www.southwestlincs.com

proud traditions that saw Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart at the wheel of Bournemanufactured Formula 1 cars. It’s a nod to history from a town very much of the present, a delightful market town undergoing significant regeneration with independent shops, a traditional market on Thursdays and that rare commodity – free parking. Bourne’s name comes from the Anglo Saxon meaning water or stream and has been a thoroughfare since the times of the Romans. It was also the birthplace of both Hereward the Wake, leader of the local resistance to the Norman Conquest of England, and Charles Worth, widely considered as the

father of haute couture. Renowned for its waterways, open spaces, parks and woodland, the town, with its 71 listed buildings, has a pleasant setting that is both distinguished and uninterrupted. It’s the picturesque bridge across Bourne Eau river from South Street into the Memorial Gardens that tourist organisation Visit England decreed was one of England’s best spots to play Poohsticks – and see whose stick floats quickest under the bridge. Close to Bourne is one of the best walking areas in the district – Bourne Wood – a Forestry Commission-owned remnant of the wild wood that cloaked England after the last ice age with miles of accessible tracks and a large picnic area.

Aviation heritage celebrated

A rich heritage of airborne endeavour is celebrated across South Kesteven through its wartime airfields and pivotal milestones in allied conflict.

T

he district’s heritage, from WWI through WWII and into the Cold War, has prompted the publication of a ‘Heritage of Flight’ booklet as a guide to visitors.

went to RAF North Witham to wish his elite 101st Airborne Paratroopers luck. D-Day pathfinders took off that evening, landing the first troops in Europe with radio beacons for the oncoming allied invasion.

Churches across the district bear their own witness to acts of valour, none more so than Caythorpe’s St Vincent’s Church with its memorial plaques, artefacts, displays and two stunning stained glass windows collectively commemorating two World Wars, Rwanda, The Falklands and the modern conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan.

During WWII Operation Overlord (D-Day), Operation Market Garden (Arnhem) and the pre-D-Day trickery of Operation Glimmer all involved local airfields.

Plans are underway for two new trails. A Pegasus Trail will trace where paratroopers were billeted before Arnhem, adding a new historical chapter for the great houses where they stayed and taking its name from 1st British Airborne Division’s action at Pegasus Bridge near Arnhem in 1944. A separate 9th Air Force Troop Carrier Command Trail will commemorate key American airfields at North Witham (now Forestry Commission owned and known as Twyford Wood near Colsterworth), Fulbeck, Folkingham and Barkston Heath. On June 5th 1944 General Dwight Eisenhower, Allied Supreme Commander,

St Vincent’s in Grantham was the HQ for 617 Squadron’s famous Dambusters raid by Lancaster bombers in 1943. In 1944, the building was used by the American Air Force to co-ordinate the allied airborne assault for D-Day.
