South Lanarkshire College Graduation Ceremony

#SLCGrad 2pm Wednesday 2 November Hamilton Town House

Douglas Morrison Vice Chairing Member of the Board of Management

On behalf of the Board of Management and staff at South Lanarkshire College I would like to congratulate all our 2022 graduates. Graduation is a celebration of your success, a chance to reflect on the past year at our College, all that you have achieved and the family and friends that have helped you on your journey. I am also delighted to have the ceremony back at Hamilton Town House for the first time since 2019.

I know that many of you have now moved on to further study, employment or training following your success with us. It makes myself and my fellow Board members feel very proud to see the successful journey of our graduands and what you go on to achieve.

I am also very proud of all our staff who have supported you to achieve your qualifications. From your lecturers who have adapted to the pandemic to ensure they pass their knowledge and skills on to you, our Student Services Teams who have remained ever positive in support of students, our Student Association for their honest and open representation of the students, our Facilities and Estates Teams who kept the campus safe and clean. And our College Management Team, HR, ICT, Finance and Funding Teams who make sure the College runs as efficiently and effectively as possible to give you the best possible experience whilst studying with us.

I wish you all the very best as you embark on what will no doubt be a very successful and happy future.

Well done!

Graduation is one of the highlights of our college calendar – a chance for all of us to celebrate the success, hard-work and dedication of you, our students. It is one that I am sure you are all looking forward to, alongside your family, friends, staff members and our community members who join us today.

I am delighted that we are back hosting our first full ceremony at Hamilton Town House following the pandemic in order that we can celebrate your success today.

I am so proud of you all for everything that you have achieved whilst studying with us. You too should be proud of your achievements – I’m sure your family and friends will be!

Today is chance to look back at everything you have achieved and celebrate not only your success but also to recognise everything your family and friends have done to support you during your learning journey.

I know that the past academic year may not what you anticipated in terms of your studies with us, but I wanted to thank you all for sticking with your course, never giving up and achieving your goal. Your success will inspire others as an example of how hard work and dedication delivers positive results.

Enjoy your special day and I wish you all the very best as you go out to make your mark on the world.

Well done!

David Martindale Guest Speaker

David Martindale is a Scottish football manager for Premiership club Livingston, where he worked his way up from being a club volunteer in 2014 to his current position.

Born in Glasgow, David grew up in Govan then Livingston, and was a youth football player with Rangers and Motherwell.

Following a leg fracture, he was released by Rangers and subsequently he entered the hospitality industry, owning and managing venues.

After a pub he owned went on fire without insurance, he became involved in organised crime. He was arrested in April 2004 following a police operation; while awaiting trial, he enrolled at Heriot-Watt University to undertake a degree in construction project management.

David regularly talks about his past and experiences openly, citing how education helped him turn his life around.

Today we will hear from David as he talks about his journey and the importance of education in his success.
