Letter from the Executive DIRECTOR Dear members, neighbors and friends: We had our share of ribbon cutting and celebratory events with the many new openings on Racetrack Road. Microtel Inn and Suites by Wyndham had a record breaking attendance at their Grand Opening last month. Park Place is well underway with the phase II office building after the new Sunoco Gas station opened alongside Little Caesars Pizza, Dairy Queen and a convenience store. This is located across from the Racetrack Road and Route 19 intersection. Builders are planning for spring ground breakings. The Hyatt Hotel will be positioned across from the main entrance to Meadowlands Harness Racing and Casino. At the bottom of the hill will be the Horizon Properties project “The Street on the Meadows” with apartments, restaurants and boutiques. On the hillside above Burger King, the new Holiday Inn Express & Suites is beginning to take shape and will be opening in the Spring of 2014. On Meadowlands Road the SmartKids Childcare and Learning Center recently opened its doors to the families of small children in the area. And, at the Shoppes at Quail Acres, two new businesses have moved in – Fortuitea Cafe, a coffee & tea restaurant, and Principessa Boutique, a children’s clothing store. For updates, attend our events by logging on to the www. southpointechamber.com website and using our Mobile APP for updates. Make sure you send news articles to our editors desk, editor@southpointe.net and send advertising requests to terry@southpointe.net . As always, we would like to have breakfast, lunch or cocktails with you to discuss you business and how the Racetrack Road Business Association can help you grow. don@southpointe.net or 724-873-7777 Thank you, Don Hodor

The Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Celebrates its Grand Opening on Racetrack Road

The ribbon cutting was held in the early evening of Wednesday October 23, 2013 during the ceremonial grand opening. Co-hosted by the Southpointe Chamber of Commerce, the exciting event at the new Microtel Inn drew about 150 visitors and guests. “All 80 rooms were booked the previous weekend and reservations for the next two weeks are strong. This has been unbelievable and unpredictable,” said Perry Monpara, the force behind a project that virtually took one year from groundbreaking to completion. Monpara, also president of National Rubber Corp. in Bethel Park, thanked primary partners Sunny Patel and Kam Gosai, a Mon Valley physician, for their trust in him. “My partners are like family,” he said. “Teamwork is important to our opening. Without that, you can’t do anything.” The Microtel is the eighth hotel on or near Racetrack Road, offering a total 292 rooms. And three others are planned or being built: a Holiday Inn Express, and ones at The Meadows Racetrack & Casino and Park Place at the Meadows, all in North Strabane Township. This nonsmoking facility follows the traditional Microtel model – built completely, never a conversion, with rooms of modest size fulfilling a number of needs. Some have one bed, some two, some are suites, and some are handicapped-accessible. Wi-Fi is free and TVs have large screens. Rooms go for $89 to $99 a night. “They’re the best prices in this area right now compared with (other franchises’

rooms) in this category,” Monpara said. Patrons have a brief jaunt to Tanger Outlets, The Meadows, I-79, with many retail and restaurant opportunities. Southpointe is only a short 7 minute drive north on Rt. 79. “We’ve seen growth in West Virginia and the Ohio River Valley, and we have this new addition. This is a very strategic area for the Microtel brand,” said Aly El-Bassuni, vice president of operations for Microtel. Chris Burdette echoed that sentiment. He is director of franchise development for the Wyndham Hotel Group, which took over Microtel in 2008, and is bullish on the tri-state area. “We have a lot going on,” he said, mentioning plans to build Mictotels in Cranberry and near Pittsburgh International Airport, “and we’re close to signing a deal in Belle Vernon.” Burdette added that “an additional 15 to 20 are targeted for Western Pennsylvania.” The Chartiers Township hotel – known officially as the Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Washington/Meadow Lands – was constructed on 2 1/2 acres of a 4-acre tract where an Igloo ice cream stand stood previously. To contact the hotel, call General Manager Sunny Patel at 724-705-7676.

Our Mystery Diner Visited the New ON DECK Bar & Grill When I arrived at the On Deck Bar and Grill, I realized this was formerly called THE TABLE. The first thing I noticed was a new look on the outside. The deck overlooking Canonsburg Lake was extended and covered making it ideal for a warm weather outdoor eating experience. Since it is winter, the deck was protected with side curtains making it a great setup with the outside heaters. When you walk in you, quickly realize On Deck has been completely remodeled with the genre of a sports bar. The bar is a much larger “U” shaped area surrounded by big screen TV’s and dynamic sound. This is ideal for watching the Steelers with an ‘almost there’ feel while sipping on a beer in the warm comfort of the open fire pit. On Deck claims one of the largest selections of tap and bottled beers in the area.

The menu was a exciting as the wood burning oven was featured for pizzas, sandwiches and entrees. I tried the burger. Its taste was close to a fine steak. Later I asked the chef his secret. They grind their burger meat daily and keep current on fresh deliveries. The pizza when compared to other ‘nearby’ venues was good if not better than other specialty restaurants (across the lake) - at ½ the price. Again, the open hearth wood fired oven is the trick, I am told. The high temperatures and quick cooking make for crispy crusts and great taste. As we left, we noticed the expanded parking lot was full. The ownership stayed the same, but the transformation to a sports bar and upgraded menu was a home run for us. Highly recommended. The address is 200 N Lakeside Dr, Canonsburg, PA 15317 and the phone number is 724-746-1126.

Tech Talk: (What phone, tablet or laptop do I dare buy?) When we are looking at all the options for personal computer technology, we have to wonder, “What’s new?” and “Am I buying the correct equipment?” or “What is the best selection for Smart phones, iPads or tablets and laptop computers?” At Southpointe Telecom, we design and install computer network cabling, Wi-Fi systems, sound systems, boardDon Hodor room technology, CCTV Cameras, and card access. The pressure put on us by friends asking what gadget to buy is overwhelming. My solution? - I actually carry the new Q-10 Blackberry in my right pocket, an Android Note (think Samsung 3 on steroids) in my back pocket and a Mini-iPad in my left coat pocket. Yes, the Mini-iPad is small enough to slide into your suit coat or jacket pocket. For internet, our staff uses Verizon, T-mobile, Comcast and AT&T. We all carry portable ‘Hotspot Wi-Fi’ devices as well. That means we can be online with fast internet while driving down the road at 75 MPH. (Didn’t they raise the speed limit in PA?). Oh, in my briefcase is a Dell laptop that weighs about 2 lbs. All is connected with a common device – a Plantronic Discovery 750 which is embedded in my ear making me look like an old man with a hearing problem. This all drives my wife crazy as she doesn’t know if I’m on the phone, talking to her or just muttering to myself. So, after walking around for 6 months with all of this technology hanging on me like GI Joe’s ammunition belt in a Radio Shack store, you are probably wondering “What is the conclusion?” The conclusion is simple. Just buy all 4 of these devices and you won’t make a mistake. Since phone choice has taken on an evangelistic, almost religious, component with everyone, you will always be politically and philosophically correct. With all seriousness aside, here is a quick wrap-up. If you don’t have a smart phone, maybe you should reconsider as you will be left behind in the business world. You will be perceived as a dinosaur. Maybe consider getting a phone holder for your walker. TABLET: The Mini-iPad (have owned 3 tablets) is very fast, slick and easy to handle. This is a great starter for the computer literate and as mentioned earlier, does fit in most suite and coat pockets making it handy at all times. It is the easiest device to use for stepping into the 21st century with the least mental challenge. After all, my two grandchildren of 3years old can operate the device. They go online, select

movies and play games – all while eating cereal. As a foot note, if you are a private pilot, the iPad with Foreflight is outstanding and highly recommended. For $80 a year you get all the flight charts, airport specifications and weather radar overlay. CELL PHONE: The iPhone by Apple falls in the same category as the Mini-iPad. This phone is very intuitive and easy to learn. The Android products are more flexible and offer more application choices as they are open architecture for software developers. (They are slightly more complicated to operate but more flexible than the iPad). The Microsoft based phones fall in the same category but with slightly fewer applications available. Make sure you ask the salesman about applications you may need for business or hobbies. The new Blackberry Q-10 is ideal for those who want a ‘real’ keyboard. This is a true one-handed telephone. As a business tool, you can handle phone calls, calendar appointments, camera pictures and internet, all while keeping your other hand on your wallet or checkbook. The down side is Blackberry’s late entry to the market resulted in a spiraling financial dive. Will they be around to service you? Most likely they will be bought up by a larger concern. Also, applications are limited to basic business, but on the other hand, do you really need the Angry Bird game to survive? LAPTOP: The success icon or label on your computer, if you want to be perceived as a serious business geek, is the DELL computer. The reputation for reliability, higher price, and on-site, in-office service calls add prestige to your business attire. The only real downside to Dell is the slightly higher price and waiting for delivery. Dell does make a few models sold in box stores but they are consumer grade with limited enhancements. Well, there you have it. Our advice to you. We encourage any input and are on the brink of starting a “Geek group” for meeting over coffee monthly and comparing business toys. Let us know if you want to sign up. It only costs the price of breakfast and coffee. You can text me at 412-670-0747 or go to your app store (Android only for now) and look up ‘Southpointe’ - it’s free to download. For those who are still carrying a Motorola flip phone, just call me at 724-873-7777 Last, the one advantage to a rotary dial phone – it doesn’t pocket dial phone numbers by accident. Did you ever notice, every time you accidentally dial a wrong number, it’s someone you have been avoiding?

Magazine Distribution in Southpointe, Racetrack Road and Washington County Area Whether you advertise in the Southpointe Marcellus Shale Magazine, pick it up because you see it in your building or another business, or read through it online like our 12,000 internet readers do, you may wonder about how we distribute our publication each quarter. (Go to www.southpointemag.com to see if online). The bulk of our magazines get delivered to each and every office in the park, to each foyer of every one of the 65+ buildings and that on a regular basis throughout the quarter. High traffic areas like hotels, restaurants, retail offices and banks receive more than others. The other high distribution areas are the stone kiosks at each entrance to the park. In a typical week, we will go through 100 copies per box because visitors to the park are looking for a specific corporation in this 900 acre maze of 270 or so companies. Or maybe they are looking for office space in the park, which has become a premium now. Our magazine contains the only accurate map with directory that lists each business by building number. Your GPS will not be current as companies move in or out, or within the park, or even change names through corporate buy-out or merger, many in search of more space for their growth. If you have a business in the Racetrack Road corridor, we also include a map with directory for that area as well - to make it easier for your clients, vendors, or new potential employees to find you. You will find this in the opposite side, or the Racetrack Road Directory+. And… because there are now eight hotels on this stretch of highway, with two more in the works, we also provide a copy of our glossy magazine to each room in most of the hotels along the thoroughfare, probably the fastest business growth area in Washing-

ton County. You will see our magazine in the Washington County Tourism racks throughout the county, in advertisers’ places of business in other counties as well, at all of our networking events, after hours mixers, tradeshows and other conferences and functions that we co-sponsor. If you would like to advertise in the Southpointe Marcellus Shale Magazine, below we have posted our publication schedule for 2014. In the current edition, we have added our new Lifestyle section which includes articles on Education and on Performing Arts. Rita Yunker, one of our Marketing Agents, was recently promoted to Editor for this new addition. It is her expectation for this area of the magazine to grow next year. The 2014 Tradeshow edition will include articles on travel, the arts, fashion and beauty, as well as education and entertainment Magazine edition
