The Vision of Southpointe We are honored to be a part of Southpointe, a unique project created from the vision ignited by Jack Piatt, with Congressmen Frank Mascara, and Senator Barry Stout. The initial planning began in the late 1980's and the park would flourish under leadership from the Washington County Commissioners, the Redevelopment Authority of Washington County, and the Washington County Council on Economic Development. All contributing vision, talent, and continual resources in a group effort to make it work so well.

Founding of the Chamber The Southpointe Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1992 after holding our first chamber meeting at the Executive Director, Don Hodor's home, on Fairway Landing Drive. It all started with four members including Dale Risker, now president, Lou Gadani, a Canonsburg local, Jim McDonald, business entrepreneur, and Attorney Karl Skrypak. Dale, Lou, Jim and Karl are still Board Members today. Our mission was to have about fifty members that would meet for lunch to exchange leads and news about Southpointe. Since then, over six hundred members have passed through our office doors and we now have over 7,000 subscribers following our weekly e-mail newsletters.

Expansion & Development of the Southpointe Map The catalyst that exploded chamber membership from four to over one hundred was a golf outing in 1995 that started when Rich Barcelona introduced us to California University Athletic Director Former Steeler and Wayne Miller. In 2000, back in the era of dial up modems, we introduced our first web page, www.southpointe.net. Our first magazine, Southpointe News was introduced in 2004. A year later we took production of the publcation in-house.

We are one of the few organizations in our area to write, produce, and edit an entire magazine with our own inhouse staff. Now Brad Herman, our chief staff editor does it all with input from our staff chamber members and all of our readers.

In 1997 we started printing a large Southpointe Map, a fold out with buildings, ads, and articles on Southpointe. It is now the centerfold and anchor of our Southpointe Directory & Quarterly Report. www.southpointe.net

Celebrating 25 Years (continued) Beyond Southpointe Over the years, the chamber has developed a presence that reaches far beyond Southpointe. The business park has an allure that draws people to reach out to us from Pittsburgh, the city of Washington, Wheeling, and even as far as Texas. In 2013 we opened our satellite office on Main Street in Washington, PA. This office, in the George Washington Hotel 2nd floor is an outreach stepping stone to the leadership at the Washington County Capital.

Southpointe Chamber staff with the Stanley Cup at Pop-Up Canada. The Hockey Hall of fame brought in a make shift museum with various items throughout the history of the NHL.

The Southpointe Chamber main office is now located in the California University Building at 135 Technology Drive. We also have a satellite office located in the historic George Washington Hotel in down town Washington.

In 2014 we were asked by Racetrack Road business leaders to start a group now known as the Racetrack Road Business Association. This group holds an annual trade show, shares our magazine publication, and partners with Southpointe Business events. Less than ten minutes from Southpointe, the Racetrack Road corridor businesses compliment our reach outside of the corporate world and into the entertainment and retail sectors.

Reaching Out to the Community Over the years we have dedicated vast chamber resources to benefit community organizations for the greater good. We often donate promotion and time to organizations such as TRPIL (Tri-County Patriots for Independet Living), The Washington Jazz Society, The Washington Area Humane Society, It's About the Warrior, Washington City Mission, and the CHS Rotary. Most recently, we have partnered with the American Red Cross to host life saving blood drives in Southpointe. The drives are held at the Iceoplex about every three months. Looking Toward the Future What’s next? We all know this is a time of unpredictable and uncharted events - just look at who is president now!

The primary goal in our chamber has always been to provide you with opportunities to network and connect with other professionals. Outside of networking, we have worked hard to bring additional value to our members.

This spring we launched the Southpointe Chamber Membership Gold Card. Members that present a gold card to participating businesses will receive an exclusive discount offered to our organization. We currently have ten participating businesses offering a discount and will be bringing additional businesses on board throughout the future.

This spring we also launched the Southpointe Junior Executive Association. The SJEA is a group focusing on 8 to 18 year old emerging entrepreneurs. Our mission is to prepare and develop our youth to better understand basic business practices and principles about social etiquette, verbal communication, ethics, and more. Laparoscopic TEP Hernia Surgery Gets Patient Up and Running Sooner Matthew Curry, 46, of McMurray, was always up for a Minimally invasive casual soccer match in the park. Dr. Hammell has been performing laparoscopic surgery since 1990 and laparoscopic TEP (totally extra-peritoneal) for inguinal hernias for the last four years. Only 10 percent of specialists nationwide perform this type of surgery, which allows for a smaller incision, with less pain and a quicker recovery for the patient.

A full view of the injured area also helps Dr. Hammell’s patients avoid another hernia. His rate of recurrence is about 1 percent, far lower than the national average of 5 to 15 percent.

The smaller the incision, the better

“I listened and followed his orders exactly,” Matt said.

“He told me to rest. Everything that he told me would happen, did happen. I completely trusted him, 100 percent.”

Three weeks after surgery, Dr. Hammell gave Matt permission to resume his normal activities. Matt promptly went out for a two-mile run. On May 3, 2015, just two and a half months after surgery, he ran the Pittsburgh Marathon, his first, finishing 26.2 miles in four hours and 27 minutes.

“I had never run that far,” Matt said. “But Dr. Hammell gave me the motivation. He allowed me to take that next step to pursue something I wouldn’t have done otherwise.”

“When he told me, I was shocked,” said Dr. Hammell.

“But recovery also has to do with the mindset of the patient. The motivated patient is going to recover sooner.”

“Before this, the only option was a four-inch incision that left patients sore and immobile for a month,” said Dr. Hammell. “Now we do three small incisions, two ¼ inch and one ¾-inch. It takes 21 days to recover muscle and tissue strength around a wound, so the smaller the incision the better.”

At Canonsburg Hospital in February 2015, Matt underwent the surgery. Dr. Hammell inserted tools through a thin, lighted tube called a laparoscope that allowed him to see inside his patient. He gently separated the tissues, staying on the outside of the peritoneum, a membrane that covers the organs in the abdomen.

“If performed at the correct level, there is no cutting, no bleeding, or need for clips,” said Dr. Hammell. “Then we cover the hole with a safe, polyester mesh.”

NEW THINGS IN STORE FOR THE ICEOPLEX

In January of 2017, Piney Ice Holdings, Inc. purchased the Iceoplex at Southpointe with plans of taking this community asset to new levels. The new management team from Ice Rink Performance Group will be focused on providing the highest quality facility conditions at all times and exceeding customers expectations with state o ­ f t­he ­art programming and amenities. The new group plans to implement improvements to the facility that provide for the ultimate customer experience and a full array of programs for ice sports, indoor arena sports as well as affordable family entertainment that promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles. ​ The Iceoplex is available for all of your group outings. Ice skating, soccer, basketball, and more are all available. All of the packages that we offer for groups are all centered around your fun and fitness. They can also offer fully customizable packages to include anything that you can think of. If you can think it we can do it!

facility, but also grow the participation in the core sports that they offer. Their entire offering is centered around the promotion of healthy lifestyles choices, and providing affordable family entertainment to our community. Within the programs and leagues the four categories include play, learn, train, compete. Play would be their Public Ice Skating, Group Outings, Field Trips, Broomball, Corporate Events, Birthday Parties and their Sportopia Summer Camps. Under the Learn category would include Skating and Hockey classes, Never Ever League as well as their volleyball, basketball and dek/ball hockey classes. Train would include Stick & Puck, Pick-up Hockey, Pickleball, and Open Freestyle. Lastly, with the Compete aspect would include leagues such as 3 on 3 Hockey, High School Hockey, High School Volleyball, Adult Hockey, youth and adult soccer, and Sand Volleyball.

Sportopia Fun & Fitness Summer Camp The Iceoplex at Southpointe also offers a nine week program for age 5-12 called Sportopia Summer Camps. Being conveniently located in Southpointe, is series. Our goal is to provide and create an atmosphere to encourage children to try new experiences, develop new friendships and enjoy fun and fitness along the way!

This exciting new ownership and management change will bring additional enhancements to the facility amenities that will provide a best in class customer experience as well as a diverse array of additional programs, leagues and events to the community that will be certain to drive more foot traffic to the facility year in year out.

About the Iceoplex The Iceoplex at Southpointe is a multi-purpose sports facility located in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, PA. Opening in 1995, the 125,000 square foot facility hosts a wide range of ice sports programs and leagues, turf sports programs and leagues, tournaments, summer camps, and special events year round.
