Local boxers hoping to fight in Scotland By Sheila McBrayne KINGSVILLE – Kingsville boxing coach Doug Patterson has three young men who are qualified to box in the Scotland versus Canada Tournament to be held in May. “Hopefully, all three will be fighting in Scotland… We’re just waiting for the nod if there’s someone for them to fight,” said Patterson. All three are registered with Fighting Island Boxing Club in Amherstburg and train at Seng’s Martial Arts and Fitness in Kingsville. TIAGO BALTERIO Tiago is a two-time youth 17-18 year old national champion and will be boxing in the World Youth Championships in Asia in the fall. Despite a background of only about two and half years of competitive organized boxing, Balteiro’s accomplishments include gold medals in the 2018 Ontario Golden Gloves, Canadian Boxing Championships and Ontario Silver Gloves. Also, last year he won gold in the Brampton Cup and was also the champion of the 2017 Ontario Golden Gloves.
TYLER ST. JOHN-WORTH Tyler St. John-Worth of Tilbury competed in Toronto in the 2019 Bronze Gloves tournament. St. John-Worth entered the Men’s Open Elite 64 kg class. He has boxed in Hungary, Russia, Ireland and was in Scotland three months ago.
LUCA COPPOLA Patterson’s third fighter is Luca Coppola, 126 pounds, from Leamington. All three fighters compete nationally and internationally. “I have produced eight Canadian gold medallists and would like to produce a few more as long as I can continue coaching,” said the 75-yearold Patterson.
