Lions win soccer opener

The Leamington Lions senior boys defeated Amherst in their opening game of the 1991 soccer season last week at Amherst. Rich Schroeder, Scott Butler and John Day scored for Leamington, with Karl Wachholz picking up the win in goal. Coach Peter Quick also praised the work of middle sweeper Scott McGregor.

Juniors drub Amherst 5-0

Meanwhile the junior boys shutout their foes from General Amherst by a 5-0 count. Joey Youssef scored three goals to lead the Lions offence, while Rocco Flores had the other two. Mark Quenneville, Jason Ford and Larry Lane shared the shutout.

Bennie Lumber goes unbeaten for title

The Bennie Lumber Atom House League team won both the regular season and playoff titles, going unbeaten in local atom hockey play. Team members included Scott Rutgers, Adam Tiessen, Matthew Nikkel, Shane Ivy, Patrick Michaud, Joey Raffoul, Kerry Klym, David Braun, Jason Meuller, Eric Pelletier and Derrick Critchlow. Coaches were Jarret James and Bill Rutgers.

Village Inn wins senior hockey crown

The Village Inn rallied to beat Gulliver Insurance Brokers and win the Leamington Men’s Senior Hockey title on Monday night. Todd Hodgson had staked the Brokers to a 2-0 lead with two nifty goals. The V.I. got on the board midway through the second as Brian Roach made it 2-1. Roach then followed with his second to tie the game. Hodgson completed his hat trick on a nice feed from Roger Lamb to regain the lead for the Brokers. Then with two minutes left on the clock, Roach struck again to complete his own hat trick, with help from Mark Matheson and Jim Butcher. That goal tied the game and Gary Gayer scored the winner 35 seconds later to give the Village Inn the crown.

LDSS Senior girls beat Amherst 3-0

The LDSS senior girls soccer team shutout Amherst by a 3-0 score last week. Leslie Gibbons, Mary Ann Elias and Suzanne Lapos scored the Lion goals. Lisa Derbyshire earned the shutout.

Eight schools compete in badminton tourney

The third annual LDSS Junior/Senior Invitational Badminton Tournament was held at the Sherk Complex on Easter Monday. Eight schools and 150 players competed from this area. Joe Bethlehem and Scott Coulter teamed up for third place in junior boys doubles, while Chris Tuquero and Derick Mastromatteo finished third in senior boys doubles. Adrienne Popa and Joey Youssef took second place in senior mixed doubles. Josephine Bileti and Cindy Sleiman won the junior girls doubles title, while Mary Bethlehem and Carol Guzman won the senior title.
